President's Report

Picture
Ian Roberts President

Welcome to the Newsletter for August 2017.

The Club is certainly doing its bit to embrace the purpose of Probus – to provide Fun, Fellowship and Friendship for the members.  It has been a great month for activities.  There was a great turnout for a relaxed couple of hours cycling along the Parramatta River, the Garden Group learned all about bulbs, more than 30 people enjoyed a very relaxed lunch at the Woolwich Pier Hotel, 23 people travelled to the city for Kinky Boots which was a great show, and many thanks to Bev and Bob Davison for hosting the last Wine and Cheese evening ….. and the list goes on.

Many thanks to Tony, Glenda and the organising committee for organising a weekend away in Berry.  Between good food, good restaurants, beautiful Shoalhaven scenery and wineries, wine “sampling”, shopping and taking over the motel restaurant for a song or two, the 38 members who travelled the distance enjoyed a fabulous weekend.

Unfortunately, in Berry, we had our first medical incident when Cathy fell while going down the steps of the bus.  She suffered a small break to her ankle.  Fortunately, we were able to get her to the local Shoalhaven hospital quickly for x-rays and medical treatment.  Although the long-term prognosis is good, she will be in a boot for several weeks.

Several members have raised the issue of parking at the Community Centre. Andrew Little has been following it up and has spoken to a number of people at both the Community Centre and the Hornsby Council – all to no avail so far.  We will, however, continue to follow it up with the Hornsby Council to try to reach some resolution of the issue.

Remember, as always, if you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact any of the Committee and let them know.
I look forward to seeing you again at the next meeting.

Guest Speaker - Mel Tyas

Picture
Mel Tyas is our August Speaker (daughter of Barbara our member). She is a Ranger for the Sydney Harbour National Park. One of her jobs is looking after Manly’s Little Penguin colony. It’s an incredibly important task, as this is an endangered population. They’re the very last breeding colony of Little Penguins on the New South Wales mainland.Since 1999, the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife has assisted the conservation of the Manly Little Penguins. Mel has been working with them a long time and is proud that they have made a real impact to help the penguins.

Ettalong Diggers - Meet the Author High Tea

Hi Everyone

I have been sent the following information about an event at Ettalong Diggers, where they are running a Meet the Author High Tea.

‘Meet the Author High Tea’

We are introducing a new and exclusive event at Ettalong Diggers where you can see and meet authors introducing and giving insight into their books in their own words.

Our first author is Karen Davis whose successful crime thriller novels are creating much interest in the film industry.  Karen was a New South Wales police officer for twenty years and a real life situation triggered the inspiration to write.
She started her career on the streets of Newtown and then moved on to work as a detective and in undercover operations dealing with organised crime.
Her mother, the late Lynne Wilding, author of twelve novels, encouraged her to write about her police experiences.

When:  Thursday 28 September

Time: 11.30am doors open for 12pm High Tea

Cost: $50.00 per person includes Glass of champagne on arrival with High Tea

I wondered if it was of any interest to anyone other than book club members. There are a limited number of tickets and tables will seat 10 people.

Just let me know if you are interested and if there are a few people it makes sense to book and maybe travel together.

Regards

Bev Davison

Cycling

Picture
6 of us set out in perfect weather for a ride along the south of the Parramatta River, ending up at Rhodes for a relaxing cup of coffee. Then after crossing over the old rail bridge, returning along the north bank to Rydalmere.

The route was almost entirely on cycleways, quite flat and the scenery was great. We set a leisurely pace and we all finished comfortably. But I’m sure there will be a few sore muscles tomorrow.

Jenny Gilbert showed off her brand new retro style ladies bicycle!

For our next outing on Wednesday 13th September we will go to The Entrance and Cycle to Chitaway Bay and back. It will take about 2 ½ hours and is a beautiful ride along the shores of Tuggerah Lake. We will meet at the Community Centre at Cherrybrook at 9AM.

Please join us. Let us know if you are interested.

Day Trips - Christmas in July – Macquarie Princess – Berowra – 18th July

All aboard for 46 people on a 1915 Timber ex/ferry boat. A beautiful day good food and wine with much merriment and friendship. A bonus was we only lost two passengers who thought we were leaving from the International Terminal at Circular Quay. We nearly lost another two who thought they could kill time necking in the car park and only just made the departure.

Guided Walking Tour of Barangaroo Tuesday 15th August

We took the ferry from Meadowbank to Barangaroo and met our tour guide Tim at the Hickson Road entrance to the reserve.

The tour took  us all over the reserve and lasted for one and a half hours. There was also plenty of opportunity to view the Sculptures at Barangaroo.

A great lunch was had by all at the Pier 8 Café.

Gardening

At our August Bunnings Gardening Group session we heard an interesting talk on growing seedlings versus planting seeds and saw the benefits of growing plants and vegetables from seeds.   At the end of the talk we were all invited to take some seeds of our choice and ‘jiffy pots’ to get our seedlings established.

After the presentation we all enjoyed our usual free cappuccinos from the Bunnings cafe and a good chat.
Additionally, during  the month a group of us visited the Dural Orchid Extravaganza and had a very enjoyable morning admiring the hundreds of orchids in every imaginable colour and shape.
Picture
As well as our next catch up at the Bunnings Garden Group on 10 September, our next outing will be to “Nutcote” - the home of May Gibbs, Snugglepot & Cuddlepie, etc at Neutral Bay on Thursday  21 September.

We will be meeting at Circular Quay at 10.00 for a morning coffee before catching the ferry to Neutral Bay to tour Nutcote and its beautiful harbour front gardens.  Following the tour we will head back to the city for some lunch.

Please advise Sue or Lorenza if You’re interested in joining the outing

Come along and join us 2nd Thursday of the month 10:30 for 11:00. Let me know so we can keep a seat for you if you are interested.

Also if you have a favourite course, let us know and we will organise a Probus Golf afternoon there.
Perhaps later in the year, if there is enough interest, we will arrange a golf weekend away.

Next Golf day is on Friday 1st September at Carnarvon at 10.30AM. We will be playing 18 holes and carts are available. Cost of Golf is $20 per head with carts costing $40 shared by 2 people.

Please contact Bruce Bartle

Opal Card Overnight Trips

Picture
Opal Card Overnight Trip

For our maiden (Tue-Wed, 17-18th October) OPAL trip we have selected Newcastle/Honeysuckle) and booked nine rooms (with 18 fabulous people) at Crowne Plaza Honeysuckle.

Also if you haven’t booked subject to availability Crowne Plaza has agreed to maintain the current discounted rates for our group:

Please advise me (excluding the current 18 starters) if you would like to go (including room preference) and I will check availability. Subject to which and before I can confirm your booking you will need to make the appropriate payment into our Activities Account with the reference of OPAL plus your surname.

In regards trains to Newcastle, services are via Hornsby station to Hamilton, circa two hours and then a 10 minute “free” bus shuttle into Newcastle/Honeysuckle (our stop is the former Civic Station with only a short circa 50m level walk to the hotel)) which replaced the train line in 2014, the shuttle bus will eventually be replaced with light rail as part of the Honeysuckle redevelopment.

I suggest we catch the 8.52am from Hornsby, Hamilton 23.08 and Honeysuckle by 11.30 or alternatively (if you sleep in) the next one is 9.22am from Hornsby,  Hamilton 12.42 and about 1.00pm at Honeysuckle.
For the return trip I suggest from Hamilton 1.30 to Hornsby 3.34.  Note these three trains are the faster variety with limited stops.

Provided we travel in “off-peak” after 8.00am and before 4.00pm the Gold Opal Card is $2.50 each day (can include other trips) and Adult Opal $5.95 each trip (other trips are extra).

Except for accommodation all other costs (meals etc) are best paid for individually and we can now fine turn our activity options with indicative final numbers and accommodation confirmed.

One of our options (now exercised) is the “Newcastle Scenic & Historic Tram” that will pick us up from our hotel on Wednesday at 11.50 (for 12.00) take us for a scenic tour (including King Edward Park and some of Newcastle’s stunning local beaches) for over an hour and then drop us at Hamilton Station at 1.20 in time for the 1.30 train to Hornsby. Cost is $20.00@ (I will collect just before departure) and a great way to conclude our time in Newcastle.

Another is drinks and dinner at the Honeysuckle Hotel overlooking Newcastle Harbour which is situated only about 100m from our hotel. There are numerous eateries in this vicinity.

There are also two modern museums (Maritime & Newcastle) close by, a magnificent harbour walk out to Nobby’s Lighthouse and beach, retail therapy at nearby Darby Street (Civic Precinct) with boutique shops and cafes.

FYI; Newcastle has a unique city geography and 200 year story has helped create distinctive precincts - all alive with energy. Explore and uncover the flavour and allure of the city’s streetscapes and waterfronts - each with its own individual character.

Honeysuckle and the Harbour - For a meal with a view (and accommodation)
Newcastle harbour is home to Honeysuckle, a major waterfront rejuvenation project transforming the previously industrial landscape. Working wharves are becoming places of play with the creation of foreshore promenades and open squares offering waterfront cafes and restaurants – all with glorious views.

Newcastle East - Where the city meets the ocean and harbour
This is Newcastle’s oldest precinct and was the original town site. The area affords delightful contrasts, with the city centre surrounded by beach on one side and harbour on the other. As Australia’s second oldest city, the streetscapes abound with gracious heritage buildings and this precinct showcases some of the nation’s most significant sites.

Stockton - For maritime history and a spectacular coastal landscape
A short ferry ride away from Newcastle is Stockton. Stockton has a rich maritime history and has seen over 100 ships wrecked on its shores, one of which has been incorporated into the 'Shipwreck Walk' along Stockton Breakwall. Stockton is also famous for its massive sand dunes, the largest moving coastal sand mass in the southern hemisphere. The sand dunes have formed the background of many films, including the popular Australian 'Mad Max' films.

Whilst our short stay will possibly focus on the above precincts others include:
Civic Cultural Precinct - Where Newcastle's cultural scene comes alive
City Centre - A place of revitalisation and transition, a mixture of the raw and refined
The Junction - Newcastle's boutique shopping village
Hamilton - For a multicultural mix and old world treasures, and
Cooks Hill - For the young and hip (I’m sure we qualify).
In summary has all the ingredients for a fantastic two day/ overnight trip.

The next 10 Pin Bowling event is scheduled for Friday afternoon 18 August @2pm and 8 players have registered.

The date for September is Friday 15th at Castle Hill at 1.30PM (Tony Coote is leader for this session).

We need to book ahead and pay a deposit, so it is important we have exact numbers a week out. A registration sheet will be available at the August meeting for those wishing to participate.

genuine thanks to the 21 members and 3 guests who attended "Kinky Boots" at the Capitol Theatre on Wednesday 2nd of August. It was a memorable performance of a recent work and was enjoyed very much by all who attended.

The convenience of a chartered bus to get us to and from the theatre in mid winter was well received and will certainly be utilised in future where access to the venue is difficult given sufficient numbers attending.

Our next proposed outing will be “Chicago” presented by Willoughby Theatre Company at the Concourse Theatre Chatswood between 13 & 22 October details to follow shortly.

Berry Weekend 4th to 7th August

What a great weekend! 38 of us ventured south to Berry for a weekend of socialising, touring, and dining out.
Thanks to all the committee who organised the event, everything flowed smoothly. Our hotel was friendly and accommodating, weather was great and all the venues for dining out were excellent.

Our tour on Saturday took us to Jervis Bay and Huskisson and on to Hyams Beach.  Lunch at Huskisson Pub.
On Sunday we were treated to a morning at the Berry Markets followed by a long lunch at Mountain View Winery with live music, sitting outside in the sunshine with a beautiful mountain and ocean backdrop.

Finally we took over Leaf Restaurant for an evening of great Thai cuisine, followed by some great music for singing and dancing from Ray Heaton back at our hotel. What a great DJ Ray is!

There was plenty of time for socialising and sight-seeing on the way to Berry and on the way back.

Can’t wait for the next one!
