President's Report

Picture
Ian Roberts President

Welcome to the newsletter for May 2017.

As I mentioned at the last meeting, we need to finalise the Constitution and By-Laws for the Club at our next meeting.  Probus South Pacific has now reviewed the draft documents sent to them a few weeks ago and they have agreed to the content.  In my email to members a few weeks ago, I outlined the resolutions that need to be passed to finalise the adoption.  Under Fair Trading rules, these are special resolutions and, as such, need to be passed by 75% of the members present at the meeting.
Adopting the Constitution, By-Laws and the 4 policies this will bring the formalities of setting the Club to an end and will allow us to focus on the central theme of Probus and our Club – Fun, Fellowship and Friendship.

Even though the activity groups had a bad run with the hot weather in January and February and the rain in March, they are now back in full swing.  Two additional groups – Bridge and Photography – are also being planned.  Full details of the activities planned for the various groups are available on the website and in the Newsletter.

The more you participate in Club activities, the more you will get to know other members, develop friends and extract the fun of participating in activities.

Remember, as always, if you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact any of the Committee and let them know.
I look forward to seeing you again at the May meeting.

Guest Speaker - Steve Wagner

Picture
Steve Wagner works for National Parks and Wildlife N.S.W in the Customer Experience division, particularly in the National Parks surrounding the Sydney Metropolitan area.

Their purpose is to show the wonderful historic places of interest and the beautiful National Parks to people of all ages. They take people on journeys of discovery from the time before the British arrived in Sydney though to today. A large part of their role is education, with many thousands of school children joining walks and talks in our National Parks, learning the importance and enjoyment to be gained from a visit to a National Park.

Steve started as volunteer 5 years ago in the Ku-Ring Gai Chase National Park and was offered a permanent position 3 years ago as Discovery Ranger delivering the programs of tours and experiences.

Steve is involved in a Tourism Australia program designed to introduce international visitors to our Sydney Harbour National Parks. The world is fascinated that a global city of 4 million people have easy direct access to amazing Harbour National Parks on their doorstep.

Steve previously had a long career in procurement for retail store chains.

Steve lives in West Pennant Hills and has recently joined our club. Welcome Steve

SYDNEY VIVID FESTIVAL – 7 BRIDGES & SYDNEY BY NIGHT -  WEDNESDAY 31ST MAY 2017
Vivid Sydney, our Festival of Light, Music and Ideas returns, once again featuring the spectacular illumination of Sydney.  Last year hundreds of thousands of people flocked to our Harbourfront to see the incredible illumination of many of the city’s buildings along with smaller light art installation around the waters edge.  The Museum of Contemporary Art and Customs House were indeed VIVID and the amazing colour stretched from the Opera House around to Campbell’s Cove to Walsh Bay and through the Rocks.

Our tour has been designed to showcase not just “vivid” but the rest of our colourful city – when the sun goes down Sydney comes alive!  We will enjoy the glittering sights of our remarkable city as we travel through Woolloomooloo, Kings Cross and Oxford Street.

Our afternoon commences with a drive around the ‘seven bridges walk’ taking in the Sydney Harbour, Pyrmont, Anzac, Iron Cove, Gladesville Tarban Creek and Fig Tree Bridges.  We will enjoy afternoon tea at Woolwich and some different perspectives of our beautiful city as we travel through Balmain, Drummoyne, Hunters Hill, Linley Point, Riverview, Lane Cove, Greenwich and Crows Nest.

Gardening  Activity -  Thursday, 13th April
A small group of garden enthusiasts met at our usual monthly venue at Bunnings to listen to Neville from Schaefers Orchids at Galston share his passion for these beautiful flowers. Neville was most informative on all the variables aligning for the best conditions for propagating and growing these cymbidium orchids.

Three lucky attendants took home a potted orchid as a lucky door prize!  We all took a little viola home  and enjoyed our free cuppa.

Come along and join us 2nd Thursday of the month 10:30 for 11:00. Let me know so we can keep a seat for you if you are interested.

Lawn Bowls

Picture

We had 9 starters at the Hills Bowling Club on Sunday 30th March.

After lunch, we enjoyed 2 hours of bowls on a sunny green. The group have now advanced from just rolling up to actually playing a game, with wife pitted against husband, it was an interesting game. So come on you guys, bring your wife for a game of bowls, it could be the first time you ever beat her at anything.

Max Henderson, who had his first roll up today, proved to be a star in the making – maybe I should take up coaching full time.

Because it was a very sunny day, we attended the bar after the game, as bowls is a very thirsty game.
Our next bowls game will again be held at The Hills Club on Sunday 28th May at 1.00 pm. Cost is $10 for 2 hours of fun.

Those interested in playing, please contact me on email address below.

Movies Activity

Having decided to try and hold our movie days during the first week of each month seven of us met on 2nd May at Castle Towers and enjoyed Their Finest starring Bill Nighy and Gemma Akterton. The film had received good reviews and it did not disappoint.

After the film we enjoyed a light lunch and scintillating conversation determined to attend the next movie day in June. (Soup of the day was very popular and delicious!)

Join us in June. More information will be forwarded closer to the day for those that indicated an interest in the Movies Activity.

Opal Card Overnight Trips

Picture
Based on the “Interest Sheet” alone, at our last meeting we had 50, yes 50 members expressing an interest in such activities.

Thus we have a new activity and I’m your latest activity leader.
So where do you want to go?
I’m looking for suggestions!

We need to consider:

When:
  • Time of week, eg mid-week (Monday to Thursday, avoid Friday to Sunday nights).
  • Only one night away.
  • Comfortable travelling time to ensure adequate time at destination.
  • Have regard to other activates, eg club meetings, weekend away (Mudgee in March and Berry in August), walking tours, School holidays, Easter, Xmas etc.
Where:
  • Whilst there are numerous options and I’m looking for your ideas.
  • For starters some suggestions have included, Leura/Katoomba, Southern highlands, Kiama, Newcastle/Honeysuckle, Hunter Valley.
  • Accommodation, type, standard, acceptable price range, breakfast included.
  • Ease of access to accommodation and attractions once at our destination railway station or bus stop.
Mode of transport (Opal card):
  • Train, bus and/or ferry, we are not limited to trains.
Cost:
  • Do we have an indicative lower/ upper $ limit per head, per trip, eg Minimum $80 to Maximum $250.
Technology:
  • Let’s make use of it, any good links etc?

My initial thoughts on “when” is after the Berry weekend, so possibly circa October, as for where and transport mode I  have a blank canvas.

Has anyone had an all inspiring experience that could be suitable?

Please contact Max Henderson.

Walking Group

Picture
On Tuesday 9th May, ten of us walked around Lake Parramatta. For some of us it was a return to our youth. Others were a bit surprised that such a lovely walk existed so close to suburbia. We encountered bush turkeys and plenty of white cockatoos. It took about two hours to complete and was followed by morning tea at the Lake Parramatta Café. There were no casualties and the general consensus seems to be that we should make sure future walks are of easy to medium grade and not longer than around four hours in duration.

Next Walk:   Rose Bay to Watson's Bay.

This walk offers an opportunity to explore the rugged cliffs, secluded coves, parklands and remnant bushland of Sydney Harbour’s southeastern foreshores. Along the way there are historic houses and gardens, magnificent sandy beaches and breathtaking harbour views. We will pass Strickland House (circa 1856) with stunning views across the harbour to the city, opera house and bridge. We will continue through Nielsen Park with brilliant white sandy beach and clear water. Then on to Vaucluse House and Vaucluse Bay. After that we have Parsley Bay Reserve via the suspension bridge and on to Watsons Bay.

Date:   Monday 5th June

Grade: Easy to Medium walk of about eight kilometres. Some suburban streets and many harbour views.

The Plan:  Catch the 9.20 am ferry from Circular Quay to Rose Bay (arrive at 9.39 am). At the conclusion of the walk, we can have fish and chips at Watsons Bay (or eat your own sandwiches if you wish). We will then catch a ferry back to Circular Quay. (Departure times 2.15, 2.45, 3.45 pm).
