President's Report

President’s Report - November 2023

What a hectic month this has been. Although the weather has not been perfect with it swinging from warm to hot and then cool, then overcast, rain and lots of wind this has not really stopped us from participating in our regular activities.

Our last meeting saw us formerly induct some of our new members. We still have a few to go but hopefully by the January and February meetings everyone will be formerly inducted.

A few of us went to see Cats at the Concourse at Chatswood this month. What an amazing production. The actors were excellent and as well as being able to sing well they were energetic, flexible and didn’t seem to run out of puff…..oh the memories!!  Looking forward to seeing what shows are coming up for 2024!

The highlight for about 50 members of our club this month was the 3 night, 4 day trip to Cronulla.  A big thankyou goes to Barry Wailes for organizing us with lots of activities that kept us on the go. With a BBQ to kick off, 3 dinners, ferry rides, walks, lunches and a terrific visit to the tram museum and a ride on the old trams to finish on the Thursday, some of us still found time to squeeze in a bit of retail therapy!  Lots of fun, chit chat and a couple of beverages all helped to make for a terrific time.

A number of our members have been traveling or have just returned or are about to leave so we are all making good use of our freedom after the enforced restrictions of COVID.  Unfortunately a few members have contracted COVID while away and others while at home.  It seems this is now a part of our lives we just have to accept.  Remember if you’re not feeling well for any reason, rest and stay home until your feeling better.

Toni Smith our Welfare office has been busy with a few of our members either in hospital or recuperating after surgery or illness.  She is doing a terrific job in following up with members.  It is so good to see members return after being unwell and getting back to their normal activities.

We have our last General meeting for the year coming up on the 22 November.

December is our Christmas party which is being held on Wednesday 20th December at the Castle Hill Country Club. If you are coming please make sure you have paid.

We will be having a meeting in January on the 24th.

Welfare

WELFARE REPORT November 2023

As Christmas is creeping up on us we must remember to take care and not overdue it.  Unfortunately, many take to the roads that shouldn’t at this time of year, so we must be extra careful and stay safe.

There have been a few illnesses during the past month, but most are recovered or doing OK. Unfortunately, there has been a couple of falls over the past 2 months.  One at coffee morning and one at Cronulla.  Forms were filled out and the patients are doing OK.  It can be a slow process, so we wish you well and hope you are back to good health very soon.  Glad to see one can still have a game of cards.  Gotta love those noodles for card holders.

For those with allergies please take extra care during the festive season.  It doesn’t take much for a restaurant or café to forget about chopping boards and cross contamination.  Many will have casual staff and young staff over this period and don’t always take the allergy situation as being all that important.  We experienced this at the Bundeena club while away and it put a very special lady out of action for the next day or 2.

Wishing our computer guru all the best and hope his health improves faster than expected.
I’d like to take this time to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a safe, happy and HEALTHY New Year.

See you at the Christmas party.

Club Covid 19 Policy

We have set down a Covid 19 policy for the club. Essentially we will abide by the NSW health guidelines.  We ask all members to respect the health and wellbeing of their fellow members, and therefore not attend activities unless they are fully vaccinated.  We have no desire to get into a situation where we need to physically check every attendee to determine their vaccination status.  We are relying on the integrity of our members and the fact that they are endangering their friends if they do not abide by this policy.

                     ‘Move On, Enjoy’ -
MOE! Challenge

MOE! will run from Mid-March ‘23 to next March ‘24. We have a group challenge of 86 books – one more than what was achieved last year.  The group will aim to reach the total through each person’s own individual challenge, and along the way everyone is introduced to potential reading material they may never have considered.  Seven new reads this month bringing the total to 57. 29 to go.
You can join at any time – just set your own challenge from your starting point – calculate how many you read in a month times the number of months you are in the challenge… +1 more.  Read your own choice of book, post about it, and enjoy the rundowns of the other readers.  If you wish to join but don’t do Facebook, send me an email and I’ll put it into the page on your behalf.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris: a work of fiction based on the first hand testimony of the atrocities of the death camps in WWII, from a survivor.  Thought provoking. Reviewed in past newsletter.

The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah: An easy read about farming in Texas during the darkest periods of the Great Depression, showing the struggles of a single mother.

The Warsaw Orphan by Kelly Rimmer: another book of the WWII events in Poland.  The way the Jewish people survived and rescued children in the Warsaw ghetto makes one understand the strength people find in surviving immense hardship. Very poignant considering todays events.

The Reading List by Sara Nisha Adams: the story line sounds interesting but left the reading wanting.  About the friendship between a senior man whose wife has passed.  He realised he has no connection to his granddaughter.  This connection is made through reading.

Victoria by Julia Baird: an incredible amount of research went into this very comprehensive look into the life of Queen Victoria. As someone who didn’t study history it was a fascinating read encompassing most of the 19th Century, including the Crimean and Boer Wars and the reasons for these conflicts.  At time Victoria seemed to swing between petulant child, submissive wife, and a powerful, knowledgeable, glamourous and bold woman and monarch, surviving 8 assassination attempts, and the birth of 9 children, and becoming the ruler of a quarter of the world’s population at the height of the British Empire.

The Barrakee Mystery by Arthur W. Upfield: you’ve got to love the plain-speaking prose of the Australian bush during the 1930’s to 1950’s. It starts with a warning from the Publisher that the portrayal of outback Australian life and attitudes at that time are not the way we think these modern times.  This is the first book in the Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte series – or “Boney’ as he calls himself. Boney, a half aborigine, is brought in to solve the murder of King Henry, an Aborigine, and encounters all the usual problems of that time (and still today) – mixed blood and divided loyalties.  The humour of the bush is so funny though.
A trooper, Smithy, pursues Dugdale on horseback in a flood. Dugdale gets through but non-swimmer Smithy is not lucky. Dugdale knows he has to rescue him – the conversation is just so BUSH and the reader so excellent.
Dugdale: How are you enjoying yourself Smithy?
Smithy: Good-o. The water’s a bit wet though.
D: Ah well. Let’s be thankful for small mercies. A man won’t die of thirst.

The Last Devil to Die by Richard Osman: The latest in the Thursday Murder Club series. The story is full of murder and mayhenm as usual, with all the usual characters. A very entertaining and delightful read. This is proving to be a very popular series.

Hope to see more of you join.

Book Club Report - November 2023

Our last meeting on Thursday 26th October, was a lively get together where we discussed lots of things, including the book.  The general feeling was that the book wasn’t one of the best we had read.  Our current read is The Midnight Library by Matt Haig.

Our next meeting will be Thursday 7th December.

the shelves go on forever.  Every book provides a chance to try
another life you could have lived.  To see how things would be

to undo your regrets?

Norfolk Island – Sun 29th Sep to Sun 6th Oct 2024

For those participating in this trip, as per the email I forwarded on 8 November, it has been moved forward one day to the above dates.

Roslyn Savio (ATour Travel) our travel agent advised;  As of 31 March 2024, Qantas is no longer flying to/from Norfolk on a Monday.  They will now fly Ex Sydney Friday, Sunday and now Wednesday.

She has confirmed our accommodation in the Paradise Hotel has been amended and she will adjust our itinerary, as some activities are only available on specific days.

As previously advised, your $300 deposits have been transferred (thanks Michael) to the ‘ATour’ account and your respective balances, via two payments (apportioned at airfare and balance) will be payable directly into the ‘ATour’ (not Probus) account as detailed in the itinerary, which included T&Cs.  Note, prices quoted were current and subject to change for 2024.

As soon as Qantas confirm our group airfare, she will be in touch for the airfare component and then in due course the final balance in July.  Unless Roslyn emails the amended itinerary directly, possibly with her request for airfare payments, I will.

Any suggestions or questions, please give me a call on 0404 020 985

I would like to acknowledge and thank Barry for organising our recent Cronulla trip, which was fantastic.  To achieve such a result requires a huge amount of time and effort.  Also, his local knowledge and countless contacts were evident.

TEN PIN BOWLING REPORT - November 2023

The final Ten Pin Bowling activity for the year took place last Friday with 11 players & a couple of spectators.  Very pleasing to see Jeanette back from injury.

The highlights on the day were the excellent scores recorded by Toni & David of 150 & 175 respectively.

Across the 2 games played Toni edged Bev on the girls side whilst David comfortably came out on top amongst the boys with John coming in second.

To  try and even things up next year I believe we should get David to play left handed.

Ten Pin Bowling in 2024 will recommence on Friday, 16 February at Zone  Bowling, Castle Hill.  As usual, a week prior to play, a text will be sent to Club members who have previously expressed an interest in participating.  Those wanting to play need to respond by return text so I can book lanes.

If there are members who wish to play and have not previously expressed an interest, please give me a call or text message (0418497211).

All the very best for the upcoming festive season.
