Ian Roberts President

Welcome to the newsletter for April 2017.

April marks the start of a new Probus year which is a good time to recap on the central theme of Probus - Fun, Fellowship and Friendship.  That is the purpose of the Club, it is why we get together, and is at the forefront of Management Committee considerations.  The more you participate in Club activities, the more you will get to know other members, develop friends and extract the fun of participating in activities.

In March, the Annual General Meeting was very successful and was well attended with 74 members.  Many thanks to Rosemary Clarke (President of our sponsoring Rotary Club) for acting as the Presiding Officer for the election of the new Committee.  Congratulations to all the elected members and a warm welcome to the new Committee members – Lynne Henderson (Membership), Sue Hackett (Guest Speaker Convenor) and Marilyn Savic (Welfare Officer).

Our activity groups have had a bad run with the heat in January and February and the rain in March.  If the weather cooperates, however, they will be in full swing again as soon as possible.  As we heard at the March meeting, three new activity groups (Bridge, Photography and Book Club) could be formed if we can find enough members to make them viable.  If you are interested, please let Glenda Coote know.

Last July, you would have placed your name on several lists to indicate that you were interested in an activity.  Since then, things may have changed and April marks the need to renew and refresh those activity lists.  A copy of the old forms will be at the front door at the next meeting for you to either add your name to different lists or remove your name from an existing list.  These revised lists will then be handed to the Activity Leaders to manage during the year.

Even though they covered 12 months, it is also appropriate that we renew the risk declaration form that you completed last year to bring it in line with the Probus year.  These forms are very important for the Activity Leaders and for Probus Insurance purposes.

Remember, as always, if you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact any of the Committee and let them know.
I look forward to seeing you again at the April meeting.

Ian Roberts

Payments                                               -$10,534.80  (mostly Mudgee)
Closing Cash Balance 31-Mar-17               $347.80

Activities as at 31-Mar-17:                  Receipts              Expense                 Balance

Senior Moments                               $ 437.40              -$436.40               $1.00  CLOSED
Korean BBQ                                     $525.00               -$525.00               $0.00  CLOSED

               Bank Balance:                                                                           $347.80

The General account has received $2,220 for membership renewal and paid $186 for mail box, $93.05 for morning teas and $50 for a 3rd hall key as the main transactions.

The activity account finalised the Mudgee trip with payments and some refunds given. This was a very successful trip and netted $166.60. When planning a trip like this it is virtually impossible to budget a zero balance, the $166.60 is considered a modest surplus – well done Tony.

The Senior Moments outing was also finalised, with a surplus of $1. A Korean BBQ was held where the $525 collected covered the cost. Two other activities have collected as at 31March: “How to Succeed in Business” $96 and Wicked $60.

The March 2017 cash book and the latest Bank Transactions 2017 spreadsheets are in the drop box or available on request.
The accounts were audited by Paul Hendry, his report of 22nd March concluded:

“Based on my review, nothing has come to my attention that causes me to believe that the annual financial report of the Probus Club of West Pennant Hills & District Inc. does not present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position as at 31st December 2016 and of its financial performance and its cash flows for the year ended on that date in accordance with the Australian Accounting Standards”

Finally, I am overseas until 14th May 2017, and thank Tony Coote who is doing a great job standing in for me while I am away.

Guest Speaker

Picture
Our Guest Speaker for April is Robyn Waite who is the Deputy Chair / Community Engagement for The Sanctuary The Hills Women’s Shelter.

Robyn, whose background is in Early Childhood Education and Non-Clinical Mental Health, relinquished her position in July of 2016 as Convenor of The Hills Domestic Violence Prevention Network having served in that role for five years.  She is currently the Deputy Chair of the board of The Sanctuary, The Hills Women’s Shelter.  As part of her role she also serves in Community Engagement.

Robyn’s Topic for our April meeting is “Domestic Violence and The Sanctuary, The Hills Women’s Shelter”.  Violence against women is now recognised to be a serious and widespread problem in Australia with enormous individual and community impacts.

We are very fortunate to have Robyn to speak to us on this serious issue at our next meeting.

SYDNEY VIVID FESTIVAL – 7 BRIDGES & SYDNEY BY NIGHT -  WEDNESDAY 31ST MAY 2017
Vivid Sydney, our Festival of Light, Music and Ideas returns, once again featuring the spectacular illumination of Sydney.  Last year hundreds of thousands of people flocked to our Harbourfront to see the incredible illumination of many of the city’s buildings along with smaller light art installation around the waters edge.  The Museum of Contemporary Art and Customs House were indeed VIVID and the amazing colour stretched from the Opera House around to Campbell’s Cove to Walsh Bay and through the Rocks.

Our tour has been designed to showcase not just “vivid” but the rest of our colourful city – when the sun goes down Sydney comes alive!  We will enjoy the glittering sights of our remarkable city as we travel through Woolloomooloo, Kings Cross and Oxford Street.

Golf

Picture
5 of us rocked up for 9 holes. Carnarvon is a very well maintained course. Wide open fairways, but quite long.  We managed to find our way around, and whilst few and far between, there were some good shots.

It was a most pleasant outing. Unfortunately, due to the impending rush hour which we tried to avoid, we did not get to try out the 19th.

We will try for a return to Carnarvon later in the year for 18 holes, but using carts!

Many thanks to Bruce Bartle for making it happen.

The March Golf day was cancelled due to Pennant Hills Golf Course water-logged.

Next golf session is at Pennant Hills Golf Club Friday 27th, Tee off at 1400. Please advise by email or SMS if you wish to attend.

Please join us for the next outing. All are welcome regardless of your level of play.

Walking Group

Picture
On Tuesday 11th April, nine gallant walkers attacked the Mt Kuring-gai to Berowra hike through the Kuring-gai National Park. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the beautiful views along Cowan Creek through Appletree Bay, Lords Bay, Winson Bay and Waratah Bay. It took around five and a half hours to complete (including breaks for morning tea and lunch) and most of us were extremely pleased to reach the top of the climb back out to Berowra railway station.

However, any weariness that we felt was a “good tiredness” resulting from the sense of achievement having completed such a beautiful walk. We did have a couple of wounded warriors with sore knee/ankles, but even they agreed that they would attempt any similar type walk in the future.

Our next walk will be around the foreshores of Lake Parramatta on 9th May. This is an easy four kilometre circuit around the lake past stands of blackbutts, blue gums and turpentines some up to 400 years old. It will take around 2 hours to complete. We will meet in the parking area at Lake Parramatta at 10.00am. Hopefully the kiosk will be open when we finish and we can end the morning with a cup of coffee and a sandwich.
