Vice President's Report

Vice President’s Report - September 2023
I have the pleasure of filling in for Cathy this month whilst she is enjoying a well-deserved holiday - exploring, drinking wonderful wines, and dining in Italy.
Spring is certainly with us with numerous outdoor activities with Probus, family and friends. Take advantage of this beautiful weather and enjoy the school holidays if you have grandchildren. Making memories is a precious thing to do.
October is Probus month, and many activities and events are planned country wide. Buildings are being lit in Sydney mainly on the evenings of October 1st and 3rd. You will all have received a letter from David Moore our PSPL Chairman with details of when and where buildings will be illuminated.
As part of the celebrations, Pennant Hills Combined Probus Club has invited us to a picnic on Friday 27th October at Heritage Park in Castle Hill commencing after 10:00am. Please refer to the separate flyer in this newsletter.
Please make our new members feel welcome at our meetings. If you haven’t had a chat with them, please introduce yourself. Can we please help our MC by taking your seat quickly after morning tea? Our guest speakers are usually waiting to start their talk and we have a limited time to hear our speaker, close the meeting and put everything away before 1:00pm when we must vacate the room.
This month our guest speaker is Chief Inspector Gary Raymond (Retired) whose topic is “Danger Was My Business!” Sounds very interesting.
A big thank you to all the Activity Leaders for your work in organising wonderful experiences for our members. We really appreciate the time and effort involved to make them fun and provide fellowship for us. Maybe Spring is the time to try a new activity such as Ten Pin bowling or Wine and Cheese evenings. Maybe organise a dining out, we are always looking for volunteers. Try a new activity, you may like it.
Enjoy the fun, friendship and fellowship our club has to offer and have a great month.

Hi,
The Club is again running a Tree of Joy campaign at both Cherrybrook and Westleigh Shopping Villages.
The trees will be up circa second week of November.
The Club has identified a need for Pamper Packs for Carers.
As an example, one of Charities we assisted last year, issued the following “shopping list”:
Last year we assisted 12+ charities. Admittedly, the other charities requested a lesser proportion of Pamper Packs.
Our Tree of Joy campaign is truly an example of community collaboration. The Club collects near 1,000 gifts from the community.
We are attempting to engage with the district Probus Clubs by suggesting members supply Pamper Packs for Carers.
Elements of the suggested contents are acceptable if budgets cannot stretch to a full pack.
I attach both “Tree of Joy” and “Pamper Pack” flyers.
Would you please place at least the Pamper pack flyer in your Bulletins between now, and end of November.
If your Club agrees to participate, then I (Keith Ball) will attend to collect items on either an “as needs” or “regular” basis.
Supply of a contact name and number to for coordination purposes will assist.
My contact details are below.
I apologise for being seemingly early and reminding you that Christmas is approaching.

WELFARE REPORT September 2023
Another month has gone by, and Christmas will be upon us before we know it.
Firstly, welcome to our new members. It is so nice to see some new faces among us and hope you enjoy the club as much as we do. Please reach out if you ever need any assistance. It’s all about Fun, Friendship and Fellowship and looking out for each other. To all members, please reach out and introduce yourself to our new members and make them feel welcome.
A few members have been in hospital over the past month and are now recovering after their ordeals. We wish you all well and hope your recoveries are progressing along nicely.
It is important, as members of Probus, that we care for the welfare of one another. If anyone has any information regarding another member being unwell or in hardship, please advise me so I can make contact and offer companionship and support where needed. All information will remain completely confidential.
Many thanks to those members who have been in contact with me over the past few months as I was dealing with ongoing medical issues. All is good now and it’s time to party once again. Have a good month and stay happy and healthy.
One last thing - “MOVE IT OR LOSE IT” as they say. Attend the activities that you are comfortable with and have some fun. It’s good for the soul.

Club Covid 19 Policy
We have set down a Covid 19 policy for the club. Essentially we will abide by the NSW health guidelines. We ask all members to respect the health and wellbeing of their fellow members, and therefore not attend activities unless they are fully vaccinated. We have no desire to get into a situation where we need to physically check every attendee to determine their vaccination status. We are relying on the integrity of our members and the fact that they are endangering their friends if they do not abide by this policy.

MOE! Challenge has now started - ‘Move On, Enjoy’
MOE! will run from Mid-March ‘23 to next March ‘24. We have a group challenge of 86 books – one more than what was achieved this year. The group will aim to reach if through each person’s own individual challenge. A quiet month with so many travelling.
You can join at any time – just set your challenge from your starting point – calculate how many you read in a month times the number of months you are in the challenge +1 more. Read your own choice of book, post about it, and enjoy the rundowns of the other readers. If you wish to join but don’t do Facebook, send me an email and I’ll put it into the page on your behalf.
The Weekend Before the Wedding by Tracy Bloom: you got an inkling of what the end would be from the first couple of chapters but still a pretty good read. Why anyone would want to have a hens party in Portugal that included her prim mother complete with sniffs and handbag, her bestie, the mother of twin boys she will happily abandon for the chance of a long weekend of freedom, her straight-laced along with the full on angst of a rebellious teenage daughter, all at the home of her mobility scooter aunt with a wicked liking for the delights of a local bar. What could possibly go wrong. Theme of hens party - Spice Girls. All search for and find their true desires as they live in way they could never have believed they would ever do.
Atlas – the story of Pa Salt by Lucinda Riley and Harry Whittaker: finally everything is drawn together. The final book of the Seven Sisters Series - the book of their adoptive father Pa Salt. What he went through during his life and how he came to choose each of the girls to put under his protection. All the time running from his childhood ‘brother’ Kreeg Eszu. Riley died before this book was written and her son has done a pretty good job writing from her notes. Perhaps needed more editing. Spans 80 years and is full of drama, and dare I say a lot of melodrama. Sometimes even mawkish. Some of it you may have already guessed, and at times the timeline was a bit skewif but still a good read.
Hope to see more of you join. Sue Calabrese (From beautiful downtown Roccella Ionica, Italy)

Book Club Report - September 2023
Firstly, I’d like the thank everyone in the group for hosting meetings and delivering books back and forth to the library in my absence.
The last meeting was held at Rosemary Clarke’s home on Thursday 14th September. The discussion was about The Lost Man by Jane Harper. Unfortunately, I couldn’t be there but I believe the book was enjoyed by the group.
Our next meeting will be Thursday 26th October at my place.
Leader - Bev Davison
Two brothers meet at the border of their vast cattle properties under the unrelenting sun of outback Queensland. They are at the stockman’s grave, a landmark so old, no one can remember who is buried there. But today, the scant shadow it casts was the last hope for their middle brother, Cameron. The Bright family’s quiet existence is thrown into grief and anguish. Something had been troubling Cameron. Did he lose hope and walk to his death? Because if he didn’t, the isolation of the outback leaves few suspects |

Cards 500 Report for September 2023
Our last cards night was held on 25 August. We had one of our largest turnups with 33 to play and 24 for dinner. Unfortunately, this clashed with an event DCC was holding for the official cutting of the ribbon and handover of keys to Parramatta Leagues Club. We were still able to have a half price dinner along with a couple of free drinks but ended up not playing cards due to lack of appropriate tables to play on. But we all made the most of it with plenty of talk and catching up, a coffee and some cake if you could fit it in!
Apologies to the members who came just for the cards, but most of you stayed and caught up with fellow card players. We have been assured that the club will have a room ready for us next month!
Cards for September will be on the 29th of September [1 week later than normal] due to the clash of dates for The Little Mermaid. By delaying a week, card players who want to go to The Little Mermaid won’t miss out.
Usual details –
Venue The Dural Country Club
Cards start 7pm
Dinner 5.45pm
$5 to play
Email to be sent out about a week beforehand with details for responding if attending cards and or dinner.

Cycling Group: September 2023
The September cycling ride, commenced at the Rydalmere Ferry Terminal, then headed west along the Parramatta River to the UWS Campus before getting onto the new light rail cycle path. The group then headed north up to the Telopea Station stop. Although the path actually continues up to Carlingford, an “executive decision” was made to skip this section of the ride, as it was a further 2.0km uphill ride.
The group headed back down the line, for a coffee stop at the local Rydalmere shops. After coffee and energy intake, the ride continued down to Rosehill Station, over the new bridge above James Ruse Drive, then to the edge of the Parramatta business area, to check the progress of the new Powerhouse Museum on the southern bank of the Parramatta River before heading back to the Rydalmere Ferry Terminal.
The next proposed ride, will tour through Bicentennial Park, Badu Mangroves, Wentworth Common, Haslem Creek and Olympic Park.
Date: Wednesday 18th October 2023.
Start time: 10.00am
Location: Waterview Restaurant carpark in Bicentennial Park
(Enter off Australia Ave).
We will stop for a coffee along the way.
Please bring your helmet, water and sunscreen.
Please let me know, if you are interested in joining the ride.

September Day Trip - Marilyn & WIMR
We really enjoyed Marilyn: The woman Behind the Icon Exhibition at the Town Hall on
Wednesday 6 September. We were able to delve deeper into the enigmatic world of the iconic film
star. We traced Marilyn’s extraordinary journey from her childhood to her meteoric rise to fame
and the lasting impact she made on popular culture.
We then travelled to WIMR at Westmead to meet the researchers. After a delicious lunch at the
research centre we listened to Professor Scott Byrne speak about Harnessing the Power of
the Immune System to Fight Disease. This was followed with a talk by Dr Caitlin Finney called
Unravelling the Mysteries of Alzheimer’s Disease. Karina Penfold also discussed The Why’s
and Wherefores of Wills. This was followed by afternoon tea and individual discussions with the
presenters.

Norfolk Island – Mon 30 Sep to Mon 7 Oct 2024
Norfolk Island is a very popular trip with limited availably for groups, including late next year. Subsequently due to our numbers exceeding expectations and with only three options available, we selected Monday 30 September to Monday 7 October 2024.
Also, due to the complexities associated with organising this trip we engaged a local travel agent (Ros Savio of ‘ATour’ Travel Service) to put a suitable package together. I recently received a two-page itinerary, which I have emailed to the participants. Basically, the same as the original, amended to reflect our new dates.
All thirty-five of our participants have paid their $300 deposits which was transferred (thanks Michael) to the ‘ATour’ account.
Your respective balances, via two payments (apportioned at airfare and balance) will be payable directly into the ‘ATour’ (not Probus) account as detailed in the itinerary, including T&Cs. Note, as previously advised, prices quoted are current and subject to change for 2024.
Once the airfares are published our agent will be seeking to lock in and will request the airfare component, possibly in the next few weeks. The balance won’t be payable unit about July.
An updated attendance sheet, showing participant names (identification, as per drivers’ licence or passport), room preference (double, twin or single) and emergency contacts will be at our next meeting. Can you please check all details are correct and sign.
Any suggestions or questions, please give me a call.

Gardening Group – September 2023
During September, the garden group visited the David Jones Annual Flower Show in the city. We looked at the 17 flower window displays and also saw the flower exhibition on the ground and 1st floor. One of the florists involved in creating the displays is colour blind and as such his flower displays utilise different shapes and textures. These were located around the grand piano and of course there was a pianist playing. Overall, the David Jones flower show was quite lovely and appreciated by all.
Our next Gardening Group day will be visiting the:
Campbell Rhododendron Gardens
1 Bacchante Street, Blackheath
Date: Thursday 12 October 2023.
The Campbell Rhododendron Gardens are a unique display of rhododendrons, azaleas, maples etc. planted among the eucalypts and bushland. It covers an area of over 18 hectares. The prime time to visit for the flower display is during their Spring Welcome weeks (30 Sept to 5 Nov 2023). It is only during this time that scones, jam & cream with Tea/Coffee are available on Thursday to Sunday at the Rhodo Tea Rooms.
A $14 payment per person is required by 30 September to cover the entry fee and the Aussie Cream Tea (their version of Devonshire tea).
Meet: Be at West Pennant Hills Sports Club for an 8.45am departure. Please let me know if you can volunteer to carpool or if you require transport. Please advise me also if you are going straight to the Campbell Rhododendron Gardens Garden. It is approximately a one hour and 45 minute drive.
Morning Tea: Upon arrival at the Gardens, we will have morning tea (scone with tea/coffee) at the Tea Rooms located in the Gardens
After morning tea we will wander around the Gardens.
Lunch: We will dine at Birdies' Bistro at Blackheath Golf and Community Club, Brightlands Avenue, Blackheath. The Golf Club is a 5 minute drive from the Gardens. There is a seniors menu as well as the lunch menu at the Golf Club. Lunch is to be paid individually at the Golf club.
If you are interested in going to the Gardens and morning tea, please advise me by email or SMS & transfer $14 per person to the Probus Activities bank account with your "Surname & Garden" in the description by 30 September 2023

A few of our members took off to Long Reef to take images of the supermoon. We were a little concerned that the moon may be hidden by cloud that happened for a short time. However we were able to get some supermoon images.

TEN PIN BOWLING REPORT - September 2023
Doug is away so I (Toni S) took on the bowling this month.
We had a nice group of 8 bowlers this month. The scores were very good for our first game with everyone bowling well. Congratulations to Greg for scoring 2 strikes and 9 pins in his last go. This put him in front for the 2nd game with 122. Greg bowled 4 strikes over the day. Well done to Greg.
Over the day we scored 20 strikes between us all which is pretty good for us oldies. Hilda bowled 5 of those strikes, so well done Hilda. That new knee is certainly working well for you.
The overall winner was Max with 133. Best ladies score was Toni with 130.
