President's Report
President’s Report - April 2023
Welcome to a new Probus Year!
Thank you to Bain our previous President for helping me to ease into the new role.
I’d also like to thank Enio Dona, Bev Dona, Jeff Swan and Loretta Polley for their years serving on the Management Committee. They are now enjoying some well deserved time off travelling and pursuing other interests.
To our new members on the Management Committee, Rosemary Clarke our new VP [ who is still away on her and Rob’s world extravaganza holiday!], Bev Watson our new Secretary, Stuart Mitchell our new Activities coordinator and Paul Day as our new Membership Officer, we welcome you and thank you for stepping up and offering your time, experience, ideas and leadership in your new roles.
To Michael Stinson our treasurer, Andrew Little for looking after the newsletter and all things technical, Toni Smith in Welfare and Bain Shenstone taking on the new role of Guest Speaker Convenor, I hope you are looking forward to another interesting year and keeping the club ticking along as we normally do.
Our Activity leaders are very busy at the moment. They are the life blood of the club and thanks to them we are keeping active, engaged, interested and enjoying the “Fun, Friendship and Fellowship” that our many and varied activities afford us. We have several new activity leaders and back ups and I would like to thank them for taking on the role. Please support our activity leaders, their enthusiasm and commitment are to be applauded.
I’m looking forward to working with our leaders in whatever role they have and this year I’m sure will be as busy as ever.

WELFARE REPORT April 2023
Just a little note for this month: One of our members had a break-in recently and luckily is doing OK. Please check your windows and doors are locked at night or when you’re home alone day or night. It would be a frightening experience and one I am sure no-one else would want to experience. Always have your phone nearby to ring the police or a neighbour/probus member if you need to.
Easter has been and gone and now we look forward to Mother’s Day. For those who are lucky enough to still have your Mums around, have a lovely day celebrating. If you’re a Nanna/Grandmother try and spend some time with family. It makes the heart sing when you see your children with those little ankle biters come running.
If anyone has heard of anyone who is not well or needing assistance please contact me.
I hope you are all well and fighting fit.

April Guest Speaker - Matt Murphy “Rum - A Distilled History of Colonial Australia”
At school, Matt Murphy failed English and couldn't see the point of history. He became a firie and has been serving in Sydney's inner city since 1987.
He is now also a part time historian and teacher, tolerating the attitudes of kids towards history that he used to share.
His first book, Weight of Evidence, is about what was the longest civil court case in New South Wales. Matt's younger self would be aghast that he is now writing history books but be consoled by the absurdist voice old Matt has achieved.
Matt also can't believe he has to write his own bio.
Matt’s talk is about Australia and its formation - through the distorted view of a rum bottle.
Could the Rum Rebellion have been averted if Major Johnston wasn't too hungover to meet Governor Bligh? Would the Eureka Stockade have played out differently if the rebels weren't pissed? How were prisoners to get drunk if Macquarie closed the only pub in the jail? And why should sailors under fourteen be deprived of their sixteen shots of rum per day?
His book concerning these, and other important questions will be available for purchase at the meeting.
We will also be taking member photos to be incorporated into a "member photo" list which will be in the private section of the website. If you don't want your photo taken, please let Bain know (he will be the photographer).

The Parking Ticket (a bit of humour from Max)
Working people frequently ask retired people what
they do to make their days interesting.
Well, for example, the other day, Jeanie my wife and I
went into town and visited a shop. When we came out, there was a cop writing out a parking ticket.
We went up to him and I said, 'Come on, man,
how about giving a senior citizen a break?'
He ignored us and continued writing the ticket.
I called him an arshole . He glared at me and started
writing another ticket for having worn-out tires.
So Jeanie called him a shit head. He finished the
second ticket and put it on the windshield with the first.
Then he started writing more tickets.
This went on for about 20 minutes.
The more we abused him, the more tickets he wrote.
Just then our bus arrived, and we got on it and went home.
We weren't too concerned about the vehicle's owner because of the sticker on the back window
"I support the Greens".
We try to have a little fun each day now that we're retired. It's important at our age.

Club Covid 19 Policy
We have set down a Covid 19 policy for the club. Essentially we will abide by the NSW health guidelines. We ask all members to respect the health and wellbeing of their fellow members, and therefore not attend activities unless they are fully vaccinated. We have no desire to get into a situation where we need to physically check every attendee to determine their vaccination status. We are relying on the integrity of our members and the fact that they are endangering their friends if they do not abide by this policy.

Book Club Report - April 2023
We had very lively discussion on Thursday 30th March, eventually getting around to discussing the book Educated by Tara Westover, which seemed to create varied opinions for everyone
Our current book is The wife drought by Annabel Crabb. We next meet on Thursday 11th May.
Happy reading
Leader - Bev Davison
The Wife Drought is about women, men, family and work. Written in Annabel Crabb’s inimitable style, it’s full of candid and funny stories from the author’s work in and around politics and the media, historical nuggets about the role of ‘The Wife’ in Australia, and intriguing research about the attitudes that pulse beneath the surface of egalitarian Australia. Crabb’s call is for a ceasefire in the gender wars. Rather than a shout of rage, The Wife Drought is the thoughtful, engaging catalyst for a conversation that’s long overdue. |

Cycling Group: April 2022
The April cycling “tour” commenced at the Rydalmere Ferry Terminal carpark, and headed west to the new pedestrian/cycle pathway under construction west of James Ruse Drive. The ride then returned to Meadowbank along the Parramatta River followed by the obligatory coffee stop at a cafe opposite the Meadowbank Ferry terminal. Re-energised, the touring party returned back to the starting point.
The ride was approximately 17.0km in length and relatively flat with the odd “hill”, here and there.
The next ride will start from the Waterview Restaurant carpark in Bicentennial Park, for a tour through the Parklands and the Olympic Park precinct. Start time at 10.00am on Wednesday 17th May.
We will stop for a coffee along the way.
Please bring your helmet, water and sunscreen.
Please let me know if you would like to join the ride.

Day Out for April
Broken Bay Pearl Farm – 30th March
24 members enjoyed a very interesting and informative visit to the Broken Bay Pearl Farm.
After an introduction to all the types of pearls and how are created, and a history presentation of where our pearls come from around the world, we were all taken by boat to the oyster/pearl farms on the Hawkesbury.
After securing our boat beside one of the farms, our guide Chris removed a basket of oysters from the water beside the boat and explained the process of making pearls. His presentation and his knowledge was very much appreciated, and we all came away on the day knowing about Pearls and Oysters and how they are formed.
Some members enjoyed lunch at the Oyster Barn with fresh prawns and oysters, and 10 members walked up to the Mooney Mooney Club for lunch.
It was a great day and the weather was nice which made it even better.

Except for a $20.00 shortfall everyone has now paid.
Regardless, of what you elect to do during the day we should all come together as one group for the sunset cruise and evening meals. After that how little or much you do, including the Koala Hospital is entirely up to you.
Except for the sunset cruise, pizza night and Koala Hospital, it’s usually best if all costs, e.g. breakfasts, lunches, dinners and all activities are paid for separately by the participants.

Getting there
Port Macquarie is on the NSW mid North Coast, four hours’ drive (375Km) north of Sydney. This excludes any stops or detours to break the journey.
Apart from traditional maps, try your GPS (car or mobile), or the following links:
https://www.mynrma.com.au/travel/trip-planner’

If you are looking to add some interest to your trip, have a break or two try:

If you are looking to add some interest to your trip, have a break or two try:
- Raymond Terrace, Riverside Park, Hunter Street is on the banks of the Hunter River with picnic (gazebo’s, seating etc) facilities.
- Harrington is a small village located on the northern entrance of the Manning River, north of Taree and a few km kilometres off the highway. The European history of the area has a strong maritime flavour. Take a stroll on the Harrington breakwall or a drive up to Pilots Hill lookout (one of the better ones), where a monument guards the graves of ships’ pilots lost on the dangerous sandbars standing just off the river mouth.
- For those that get to Port early, why not visit the Breakwall Walk, stop at the Little Shack for Coffee and maybe walk along the adjacent Town Beach, and/or the Town Green Inn is a great spot on the river for lunch and/or an afternoon drink
- TimberTown, Wauchope, forget it, will be closed from 25 April to 3 May following the school holidays. https://timbertown.com.au/
Activities
The Port Macquarie region is a stunning destination in its own right, luring retirees, families, couples and those looking for a nature-based holiday. Blessed with sparkling beaches lined with pockets of rainforest, the area is also a significant habitat for koalas, with the world-famous Koala Hospital caring for the lovable endangered creatures.
Port Macquarie is the largest town in the region and bursting with restaurants, beaches, fun attractions and accommodation. To the south, the villages of North Haven, Laurieton and Kendall sit along the banks of the Camden Haven River. Further inland, Wauchope is a former timber town that’s now the gateway to lush rainforests.
A getaway in the Port Macquarie area means getting outside and enjoying the bounty of nature. From spotting dolphins from the painted breakwall on the Port Macquarie Coastal Walk, to whale watching cruises or strolling the boardwalk of the Sea Acres Rainforest Centre, the unspoiled beauty of the region will dazzle. Further inland, hike the Laurieton track or visit the World Heritage-listed Willi Willi National Park.
With so many attractions, we have tried to identify those with broader appeal for Monday and leave Tuesday free to allow for some individual pursuits. The following are our current suggestions:
Monday:
Meet outside our motel at 8.10am (8.15am departure), for a short 2km drive to the Koala Hospital
Koala Hospital, 8.30am
Lord Street Port Macquarie. Whilst this may an early start for some, it’s the best time to visit the hospital as it’s feeding time.
As a licensed wildlife rehabilitation facility, the Koala Hospital has been helping rescue and rehabilitate koalas since 1973. The facility is run by Koala Conservation Australia Limited, which is a not-for-profit organisation that includes approximately 200 volunteers dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating koalas and conserving and restoring their natural habitats.
The Koala Hospital consists of exhibit enclosures, a treatment clinic, intensive care units and rehabilitation yards, many of which have trees for koalas to learn to climb as part of the rehabilitation process. There is also a Koalaseum - a museum for Koalas which provides information on koala evolution and biology and interactive displays so visitors can touch koala fur or look down a microscope at koala poos (scat). As well as the Koalaseum, there is a gift shop, where you can pick up a souvenir or gift for a friend or family member.
The koalas are kept outside, so please prepare for any weather conditions. Wear sturdy, enclosed footwear. Be aware and watchful of where you walk.
We have booked an enjoyable, personalised 45-minute tour with an experienced, knowledgeable guide. https://koalahospital.org.au/

Lighthouse Beach and Tacking Point Lighthouse, about 1.00pm

- Includes afternoon tea / snacks.
- Licensed bar on board.
For those wish to team up (car pool), we suggest meeting outside our motel at 8.30am for anyone or more of the following:
- A very scenic 90 minute, 80km return drive (excluding stops) south of Port Macquarie to Laurieton that’s takes in:
- Bonny Hills, provide some of the most spectacular coastal views in the region, looking over some 14 kilometers of pristine beaches. The old wood fishing shacks of the past are long gone, replaced by homes and holiday parks with million-dollar views
- Lake Cathie (pronounced 'cat-eye') large saltwater lake is the second-largest estuarine salt march area in New South Wales. When it's opened to the sea the warm shallow waters are ideal for swimming. Venture up to the northern headland where a fantastic forest walk has been established, with a viewing platform that offers fabulous views across the lake and out to the ocean
- North Haven, sits at the mouth of the Camden Haven Inlet, surrounded by beautiful waterways, gorgeous beaches and rugged wilderness
- Laurieton is all about views to die for. Drive (or take the challenging 3km Laurieton Track) to the scenic summit of North Brother Mountain. Enjoy views from Port Macquarie to Diamond Head from the Perpendicular Point Walking Track, set above pretty Pilot Beach in the Kattang Nature Reserve, where wildflowers carpet the ground in spring
- The Fisherman’s Co-Op (lunch option) is great place to taste the delights of the Mid-north Coast. Situated by the Camden Haven River, it offers on-site dining and if more spacious room is desired, there is an excellent park a short distance along the river

Another relaxing short drive could also be achieved by combining two or three of the following:
- Ricardoes Tomatoes & Strawberries, 221 Blackmans Point Rd, Blackmans Point, is just ten minutes from Port. Pick your own tomatoes and strawberries if in season. Also has a nice café for coffee and lunch. Can also buy preserves relishes and lots of other goodies. http://www.ricardoes.com/
- Cassegrain Winery, 10 Winery Dr, Port Macquarie, their Cellar Door is surrounded by a working winery providing guests the unique opportunity to experience a tour through the winery to see where and how the magic happens. Top this off with an exclusive tasting of Cassegrain’s award winning wines including their very exciting new releases. https://www.cassegrainwines.com.au/
- Billabong Zoo, 61 Billabong Dr, Port Macquarie, you can pat, feed, hold, hear and see over 80 species of mammals, reptiles and birds. We care for over 200 animals in this friendly 10-acre Koala and Wildlife Park. Open 9.00 to 5.00, seven days https://www.billabongzoo.com.au/
- Breakwall Walk, stop at the Little Shack for Coffee and include the adjacent Town Beach
- Award winning Port Macquarie Museum tells the stories of those who have come before us and what makes the town special, from its beginnings as a British penal settlement through to the popular tourist and sea-change destination of today.0pen 10.00 to 4.00. Adults $5.00
- The Town Green Inn, a great spot on the river for lunch and/or an afternoon drink

HELLO Probus Members and Members of Probus
This month our game was not played due to Easter and Anzac Day holidays. That being the case and the need to write something for the newsletter. We have had cool weather and for my part good company. I spent some time at my daughter’s house in Cordeaux Heights completing some long overdue maintenance. I also attempted to make a river table from a slab of White Cedar that was purchased some time ago in the north coast of NSW. The result was to say the least an absolute debacle and the cost of the epoxy resin is a subject not to be spoken off. I have just completed my second attempt on smaller slab the results may be available by the time this newsletter goes to print.
Our next game is planned for May 05, 2023, being the first Friday in the month, will be at Muirfield Golf Club. Teeing off from 10:00 am.
I have not confirmed bookings for June 2023 and will advise ASAP.
Emails will be sent out for player acceptance or decline so please add to your calendar.

Walking - April 2023
I would like to thank all the attendees of the last two walking activities that have been conducted since the last newsletter. The walk activity in late March was to Middle Head fortifications (see Photos) and in April the exercise was to walk the area planned for upgrade by the Hills council in Caterson Reserve (see photos).
I thank Lynne Henderson for organizing the next two walks (May & June) while I am away walking the hills of Tuscany Italy.
Please keep the following date free for two very interesting walks:

Our next walk will be a bush walk on Tuesday 9th May 2023
Hunts Creek, Carlingford
5km return walk, (comfortable 2 hours) from the headwater of Hunts Creek which flows over Balaka Falls, under Northam Drive, then along the paved Hunts Creek walkway to Bettington Road. We will return along a similar route to our starting point.
Along the way we will take time to observe sandstone cliffs and caves, vegetation, fauna and the impact of urban development. Most of the track is well-formed with some tree roots to watch out for, a few stairs and a relatively easy creek crossing. Whilst it is a reasonably level walk good walking shoes are recommended.
On a future walk we will continue along Hunts Creek, including the rear of The Kings School to where the creek enters Lake Parramatta at the stepping stones, which we have crossed on our previous walk around Lake Parramatta.
Meet: Sun Valley Pl, Carlingford
When: Tuesday 9 May, 2023
Time: 10am
Walk: Hunts Creek, Carlingford
Parking: Sun Valley Pl or Baker St, Carlingford
