Ian Roberts President

The end of March signals the end of the first year for the Club.  Ours is a very new Club.  It was formed on 27th July 2016.  Our membership has stabilized at 110 and we closed the books to new members after only two months.  The Club has a young and vibrant membership which augers well for the future.

This level of interest clearly demonstrates the relevance and significance of an organisation such as Probus which focuses on “Fun, Friendship and Fellowship” for those who have recently retired.  We value those principles highly and have 16 activity groups up and running with more being planned. The Members’ Meetings, which are held each month, have been strongly attended.

Please remember that the Committee has been, and will always be, looking for ways to improve the Club.  It is your Club and anything we can do to add to your interest and enjoyment of Club activities will always be welcome.

As President of the inaugural year, I have been very lucky to have been supported by an energetic Committee who have had the interests of the Club at heart.  Each person has taken to their role and responsibilities enthusiastically which has made my role so much easier.  A special thank you needs to be given to Tony Coote whose support has been invaluable.

March is the time to elect a new Committee to take the Club through the next 12 months.  I wish to thank each of you for your trust and confidence in allowing me to be your President for the past 8 months.  It has been a pleasure and I feel sure that we can look forward to an exciting year ahead for this great Club of ours as we build on the experiences of the past.

Ian Roberts

Secretarial

From the opening of this club in July 2016 this job has been about establishing ourselves with a solid base to work from.

Being accredited, becoming incorporated, opening a PO Box and establishing systems and procedures to run the club in an orderly and organised fashion, these functions have been basic steps for the forming of a solid foundation on which we can build.

This has only happened because of a joint effort from a dedicated and enthusiastic management team of which I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of.

I want to thank Sue Calabrese our Assistant Secretary for her dedication and skill in typing the minutes for the Committee and General Meetings and appreciate her effort in providing this service.

I have enjoyed this role for the past 8 months and look forward to being part of a vibrant, friendly and enthusiastic club in the future.

Day Trip on the Rivercat and lunch at Sydney Rowing Club Abbottsford

It may have been one of the hottest days on record but seven brave souls had a one and a half hour cruise along the Parramatta River – it was hot but very pleasant. This was followed by lunch at the beautifully cool, Sydney Rowing Club. The wine and view made it a perfect venue to be with friends on an extremely hot, Friday afternoon.

Gardening

Gardening Group

On the 2nd Thursday of each month members join a group of garden enthusiasts at Bunnings, Castle Hill to learn from a variety of speakers about various  gardening topics. In February we  learnt about noxious weeds from two speakers from Hawkesbury River County Council. They informed the group of their role in the council and showed us some of the weeds that are sometimes considered pretty flowers but are in fact NOXIOUS weeds.

A free cuppa and a little gift were available after the presentation.

Come along and join us. Let me know so we can keep a seat for you if you are interested

Golf

Picture
5 of us rocked up for 9 holes. Carnarvon is a very well maintained course. Wide open fairways, but quite long.  We managed to find our way around, and whilst few and far between, there were some good shots.

It was a most pleasant outing. Unfortunately, due to the impending rush hour which we tried to avoid, we did not get to try out the 19th.

We will try for a return to Carnarvon later in the year for 18 holes, but using carts!

Many thanks to Bruce Bartle for making it happen.

Next golf session is at Pennant Hills Golf Club Tentatively on Tuesday 25th, Tee off at 1400. Please advise by email or SMS if you wish to attend.

Please join us for the next outing. All are welcome regardless of your level of play.

Movies

On Tuesday, 21st February, four members met to view another great movie. Hidden Figures is a travel back to a simpler time when the US was trying to outsmart Russia in the race to space. It attacks discrimination on two front – racial and gender. Go and see Hidden Figures. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

As the movie started at 12.00 noon, we enjoyed a cuppa (and something to accompany it) prior to the movie. It was a great opportunity for lots of talking and getting to know each other.

Join us in March for our next movie day. You will be contacted with the details by email if you indicated that you wanted to be included for the movie activity.

Mudgee Trip Away – March 3rd to March 6th 2017

The rain didn’t dampen our spirits and we all had a great time.
The highlight for me was the wine tasting and lunch at Moothi Estate. Fabulous food, wines and a great venue and view.
Saturday night was party night for the party animals at the Aden.
The “more conservative crowd” at the Horatio none the less had a great time.

People teamed up on Sunday and Monday to look at more wineries, breweries, cheese factories and olive farms. We took Mudgee by storm.
Lots of fond memories. This was our first trip away as a club, and there will be many more. Starting with a South Coast trip in July.

Walking Group

Picture

February walk was cancelled due to inclement weather.

Planned outings:-

Walk Number 1:   Next Tuesday 14th March.
Because we cancelled last month's walk from Taronga Zoo to Chowder Bay, I thought we could catch up with this one next week. It is an easy harbour walk with fabulous views. It is about 5 kilometres in length and graded easy. Walkers will need to catch the 10.20am ferry from Circular Quay to Taronga Zoo. Bring your own lunch (or buy something at Circular Quay). At the finish we can catch a bus back to Wynyard. These buses leave every 30 minutes on the half hour from the very end of Chowder Bay Road.

Because it is very late notice, if you plan to come along, please reply via e-mail by Sunday night.
Walk Number 2: Tuesday 11th April.
The weather is getting cooler in April, so I thought we could undertake a more adventurous and slightly more demanding walk. We plan to tackle the Cowan Creek History Walk. This is a lovely walk of about 10.7 kilometres along the foreshores of Cowan Creek. We will walk through 4 separate bays (Appletree, Winsom, Lords and Waratah). The walk is rich in both aboriginal and European history. It is graded as medium difficulty and will take about 4 - 5 hours to complete. It starts at Mt Kuring-gai railway station and finishes at Berowra railway station.
The plan is to take a train from Hornsby at 10.00am to Mt Kuring-gai and commence the walk from there.  (alternatively you can catch a train from Pennant Hills Station at 9.40am then change at Hornsby to get the 10.00am to Mt Kuring-gai). The walk finishes at Berowra rail station where we can catch a train back to Hornsby (Pennant Hills). You will need to bring your own lunch, water etc. Most likely you will not be back to Hornsby (or Pennant Hills) until about 4.00pm.
There will be an Activity Sheet out for this walk at the next meeting, so please indicate your intention to join us on that form.
I hope that we can get a big turn-out for both of these walks.
