President's Report
President’s Report - November 2022
This year has seen a welcome return to activities and trips with the lifting of Covid restrictions. Many of our members have recently returned from a very enjoyable trip to Orange. Thanks again to Max for organising this.
Christmas is fast approaching. November will be the last monthly meeting this year with the meetings resuming in late January. Many of the activities will be winding back over Dec and Jan as well. Please check the Calendar on the Probus website for activity details.
The club’s last major event will be the Christmas party on 21 December at the Castle Hill Country Club. I thank Enio for again organising the event. I look forward to seeing many of you there.
May I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, at least in writing, if I don’t see or speak to you personally before then.

Club Covid 19 Policy
We have set down a Covid 19 policy for the club. Essentially we will abide by the NSW health guidelines. We ask all members to respect the health and wellbeing of their fellow members, and therefore not attend activities unless they are fully vaccinated. We have no desire to get into a situation where we need to physically check every attendee to determine their vaccination status. We are relying on the integrity of our members and the fact that they are endangering their friends if they do not abide by this policy.

The club is looking for activity leaders for Backup Leaders
Without a leader, we the members, do not have an activity. In addition, existing leaders are looking for backup in the case of holidays or sickness. This is very important as most of the leaders have now been doing their leadership for 5 years. Please consider making a contribution to the club by taking on a roll.
Currently Dining Out is being organized on a rotational basis for one month at a time. Please come and discuss with Enio about taking on this roll for any month in 2023.
The opportunity for Overseas travel is coming back. Anyone interested in planning and organizing the next trip for the club please contact Enio.

THROW COVID BEHIND US!
Photo by Tim Mossholder on Unsplash
The THROW COVID challenge. October brings 5 more books – 2 of which were nearly 21 Hours long each! ThroCo runs from March to the end of February ‘23.
You can join at any time – just set your challenge from your starting point – how many do you read in a month times the number of months you are in the challenge PLUS 1 more. Read your own choice of book, post about it, and enjoy the rundowns of the other readers. If you wish to join but don’t do Facebook, send me an email and I’ll put it into the page on your behalf.
Since mid-September:
Black River by Matthew Spencer: A murder mystery chosen by the reader because the storyline was familiar. Three stars. Set in a long very hot summer in Sydney. A young woman is found murdered in the deserted grounds of an elite boarding school. Adam, a battling journalist will have to go into very dark places of his childhood to piece together the clues to solve the murder.
The Ripping Tree by Nikki Gemmell: The story starts with a grandmother telling her grandchildren about the history of their house. Set in the early 1800’s Thomasina is on her way to the colonies, to be married to a clergyman she’s never met. A storm wrecks the ship and she almost dies. She is saved by an Aboriginal man who carries her to the door of Willowbrae – a grand European house. Now she feels free to be whoever she wants, but the longer she stays here she discovers things are not what they seem. Has she exchanged one kind of prison for another?
Moon Sister by Lucinda Riley: Another delight in the Seven Sisters series – Number 5. Tiggy’s journey to her roots starts with a job in a deer sanctuary on a Scottish estate, the beginnings of an attraction to the Laird, and meeting up with Chilly, the ancient Gypsy from the Alhambra in Spain, who sets her on her journey to Spain to find her gypsy roots. Her past story begins at the start of the 20th Century, a great grandmother, Lucia, who becomes a famous flamenco dancer after fleeing Spain in the Civil War, making her way to Portugal, South America, and then New York. Tiggy's birthplace of Sacromento tells of the gypsy cave dwellers where despite extreme poverty, the sense of community runs deep.
There is also the underlying menace of a character who appears in Tiggy's life and who has been in the series before - Zed. An ominous cloud hangs over this man - he seems to be stalking the sisters somehow and from the teaser reading of The Sun Sister - Book 6 - he seems about to become more prominent in the next sister's life.
Songbirds by Christy Lefteri: What a beautiful book set in Cyprus. A little slow at the start, but then so compelling. Written by the author of The Beekeeper of Alepo, she again describes the world of the underclass - this time the life of the imported maid.
The story is based on a true event that happened in Cyprus with the murders of 5 maids, and while this is not a recount of that event, it is a beautifully written story inspired by it. It exposes the divide between those of privilege and those who serve that privilege out of desperation.

I would like to acknowledge Ian Roberts for his support in organising this trip.

Probus Photography Group November Report
November 12 Outing to Curracurrong Falls and Eagle Rock
We had nine brave soles on our 8.8km walk to Eagle rock and Curracurrong Falls in the Royal National Park. The walk was challenging with some uphills, but this was outweighed by the beauty of this walk along. We traveled across the tops of the cliffs that dropped straight into the sea. Some images from the walk are below.
After the walk we had a well-earned lunch at the Community Services Club in Bundeena.

We also have an open category where any image can be submitted for comment. The purpose of the reviews is to jointly discuss the images so that they can be improved.
Most of our members use I phones, we also have some more serious photographers.

TEN PIN BOWLING REPORT - November 2022
The final Bowling activity for the year took place last Friday.
Whilst David was a clear winner on the boys side, the girl’s competition was much closer with Toni coming out on top. In fact, Toni not only beat the other girls, she also bettered David in game two with a great score of 144.
Bowling now goes into hibernation until February next year. Hopefully the new year will see an increase in participation.

Tennis Group Report- October 2022
Weather has been good to us this month but players traveling have resulted in 3 of us playing a lot. Then Bev & I went away so we had to get 2 extras to make up the numbers. Hopefully all has worked out OK and play wasn’t interrupted too much.
We meet on Monday & Wednesday @ 9.00am at Hasting Park Tennis Complex, 44 Belltree Crescent, Castle Hill.

Live Theatre November 2022
Big Fish – SYMT Hornsby RSL Friday 20th January 2023
Sydney Youth Musical Theatre proudly presents Big Fish, a heartfelt, powerful, and truly magical musical about the stories we use to define ourselves. Edward Bloom has lived a full and fantastical life. Populated by witches, giants, circus-folk and mermaids, marked by true love that stops time in its tracks, and framed by heroics that push limits of believability. Showcasing some of Sydney's best young performers, Big Fish a 'big fish' of a tale itself - magnificent, spectacular, fantastical, and overflowing with love.
Please support this great group of young people at what will be their last show at this venue for some time. As usual we will arrange a table beforehand for those wishing to dine.

Tina -The Tina Turner Musical
We also have received substantial interest in attending The Tina Turner Musical in June/July 2023, at The Theatre Royal Sydney (opening May 2023). As a result, I will finalise arrangements for a group booking and advise the entire interest group by email shortly.
Direct from Broadway, this smash hit musical phenomenon is a celebration of an unstoppable woman who became the Queen of Rock n’ Roll.
With 37 award nominations including BEST NEW MUSICAL (Olivier Awards) and BEST MUSICAL (Tony Awards), this heart-pumping production is guaranteed to raise the roof at Theatre Royal Sydney.
Featuring iconic songs including, “Simply The Best”, “What’s Love Got To Do With It”, and “Proud Mary”, this story of joy, passion and resilience is as important now as ever. Tina Turner didn’t just break the rules, she rewrote them and now you can experience her triumphant story live on stage.
We will put out an interest sheet at our October and November meetings. Prices inclusive of return Bus Transport is expected to be $150 each which is reasonable value compared to the current non-group ticket only price of $169.

Walking - October 2022
Many thanks to the 5 members that joined me for the Callicoma Loop Walk earlier this month. It was an excellent day for an interesting walk, through some really nice forest around the fringe of Cherrybrook. Highlights of the walk included some beautiful rock overhangs at the 'Callicoma Caves' and the atmospheric 'Coachwood Grotto'.

Highlights of the walk included some beautiful rock overhangs at the 'Callicoma Caves' and the atmospheric 'Coachwood Grotto'.
The next walk will be on Dec 13th 2022, join me for a Harbour walk from Waverton Train station to Milson Point Train Station. Whilst this walk isn’t hard, it is quite lengthy and has a couple of points where you’ll walk up several flights of stairs. It’s enough to get your heartbeat going, but the majority of the trail is flat.
Distance: Approx 5,5km (Does not include Balls Head Reverse Loop)
Elevation gained: 155m
Difficulty: Easy
Type of trail: One way
Start of trail: Waverton Train Station
End of trail: Milsons Point Train Station
The walk includes visit to the Coal loader, Carradah Park, onto Sawmiller Reserve, followed by Bluepoint Reserve and McMahon's Point, Lavender Bay, a 300 meter detour, to the highly recommend Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden followed by the Lavender Bay Boardwalk, Luna Park Gate and finally Milson Point. To keep this walk to a reasonable distance, Balls Head reserve is not included.
This is the last walk for 2022, I hope that you can join me.
Also I am always interested in getting ideas for new walks, that are not too far to travel from Castle Hill/West Pennant Hills. Please contact me if you have any interesting walks.

Wine & Cheese November 2022
November’s Wine And Cheese night was hosted by Tony and Glenda Coote. We had an excellent attendance of 26 people. It was a mild evening so we could enjoy the night outdoors in a lovely setting.
There will be a Wine & Cheese evening on 9th December at The Stinson’s house.
