President's Report

President’s Report - October 2022
Another month has flown past!
It is nice to see activities back to normal and members feeling more comfortable to undertake international travel. Indeed, Julie and I have recently returned form a month away overseas. I must thank Cathy Turner for ably taking over presidential duties whilst I was away.
At the next meeting I look forward to the formal induction of our new members to the club. Come along and formally make them feel welcome and introduce them to our mantra, Fellowship, Fun and Friendship.

October 2022 Welfare Report
Welcome to Spring. It looks like we are in for another wet season ahead.
Stay safe and look after yourself.
Our members that have been in hospital are doing well and we wish them all the best for continued recoveries. Not much else to report this month which must be a good sign.
It’s good to see our activities up and running again. If you would like to be added to any of the activity lists just get in touch with the leader of that group and you will then receive emails regarding outings etc.
Fun friendship and fellowship are so important to our overall health so join in and enjoy what our great club has to offer. So many choices.

Activities & Leaders
As a result of the sign-up sheets at the Foundation Meeting and expressions of interest on application forms we have set up numerous activities and interest groups.
Club Covid 19 Policy
We have set down a Covid 19 policy for the club. Essentially we will abide by the NSW health guidelines. We ask all members to respect the health and wellbeing of their fellow members, and therefore do not attend activities unless they are fully vaccinated. We have no desire to get into a situation where we need to physically check every attendee to determine their vaccination status. We are relying on the integrity of our members and the fact that they are endangering their friends if they do not abide by this policy.

THROW COVID BEHIND US!
Photo by Tim Mossholder on Unsplash
The THROW COVID challenge. October brings 5 more books – 2 of which were nearly 21 Hours long each! ThroCo runs from March to the end of February ‘23.
You can join at any time – just set your challenge from your starting point – how many do you read in a month times the number of months you are in the challenge PLUS 1 more. Read your own choice of book, post about it, and enjoy the rundowns of the other readers. If you wish to join but don’t do Facebook, send me an email and I’ll put it into the page on your behalf.
Since mid-September:
Black River by Matthew Spencer: A murder mystery chosen by the reader because the storyline was familiar. Three stars. Set in a long very hot summer in Sydney. A young woman is found murdered in the deserted grounds of an elite boarding school. Adam, a battling journalist will have to go into very dark places of his childhood to piece together the clues to solve the murder.
The Ripping Tree by Nikki Gemmell: The story starts with a grandmother telling her grandchildren about the history of their house. Set in the early 1800’s Thomasina is on her way to the colonies, to be married to a clergyman she’s never met. A storm wrecks the ship and she almost dies. She is saved by an Aboriginal man who carries her to the door of Willowbrae – a grand European house. Now she feels free to be whoever she wants, but the longer she stays here she discovers things are not what they seem. Has she exchanged one kind of prison for another?
Moon Sister by Lucinda Riley: Another delight in the Seven Sisters series – Number 5. Tiggy’s journey to her roots starts with a job in a deer sanctuary on a Scottish estate, the beginnings of an attraction to the Laird, and meeting up with Chilly, the ancient Gypsy from the Alhambra in Spain, who sets her on her journey to Spain to find her gypsy roots. Her past story begins at the start of the 20th Century, a great grandmother, Lucia, who becomes a famous flamenco dancer after fleeing Spain in the Civil War, making her way to Portugal, South America, and then New York. Tiggy's birthplace of Sacromento tells of the gypsy cave dwellers where despite extreme poverty, the sense of community runs deep.
There is also the underlying menace of a character who appears in Tiggy's life and who has been in the series before - Zed. An ominous cloud hangs over this man - he seems to be stalking the sisters somehow and from the teaser reading of The Sun Sister - Book 6 - he seems about to become more prominent in the next sister's life.
Songbirds by Christy Lefteri: What a beautiful book set in Cyprus. A little slow at the start, but then so compelling. Written by the author of The Beekeeper of Alepo, she again describes the world of the underclass - this time the life of the imported maid.
The story is based on a true event that happened in Cyprus with the murders of 5 maids, and while this is not a recount of that event, it is a beautifully written story inspired by it. It exposes the divide between those of privilege and those who serve that privilege out of desperation.

Activities
With the assistance of Kim and Ian, we have made reservations for our bus, evening meals and a theatre night.
Orange is characterised by beautiful tree-lined streets, charming houses dating to the early twentieth century and outstanding public parks. It is a substantial and sophisticated rural service centre which lies at the heart of some of New South Wales' richest and most bountiful agricultural land. The city is known for its excellent local produce, its impressive vineyards and its fine dining restaurants. It is also known for its impressive autumn colours and bitterly cold winters.
Sunday, getting there:
Drive to Lithgow and then take the Great Western Hwy (GWH) to Orange
Two alternatives to Lithgow from home
Almost 2.0 hours and 130km prior to any detours.
Almost 2.0 hours and 120km prior to any detours.
Then it’s Lithgow, via Bathurst to Orange
Bathurst is a city of contrasts with heritage listed buildings, world class museums and Mount Panorama, one of the world's best motor racing circuits.
Another option is the historic town of Milthorpe a beautiful heritage-listed village with acclaimed restaurants, cool climate wineries and fascinating history perfectly situated in the rich pastoral hills of the Orange region.
(This is also an option for Tuesday and is about 24km south-west of Orange.)
About 1.75 hours and 120km prior to any detours, add 5km if you drive into Milthorpe.

Monday, a leisurely morning heritage walk followed by a local bus tour, a country pub for dinner and a fun evening at an Art Deco theatre.
Starting from our motel the walk is up Byng Street, across to Cooks Park . Then it’s down Kite Street with a few deviations, before returning to our motel which could be via the Regional Museum.
Orange Regional Museum 151 Byng Street, will interpret the stories, cultures and places of the region, displaying artefacts that trigger memories, engage audiences and inspire new ways of thinking about history and cultures.
After which you could enjoy some leisure time shopping in the city centre and have lunch at one of the many cafes. Alternatively visit one of the many local attractions.
Molong is a gorgeous historic village known for its grand colonial buildings and rich agricultural produce tucked into the rolling green hills of the Macquarie Ranges. Enjoy its heritage-listed main street and its architecture, coloured with vibrant local galleries and boutiques.
Amusu Theatre & Movie Poster Museum is situated in the small town of Manildra and is Australia's oldest operational picture theatre, being a 1930's Art Deco Theatre featuring many of the original fixtures.
We have booked the Royal Hotel 6.00pm for dinner (very basic group menu) and the Amusu Theatre and Movie Posture Museum, (optional museum after 7.00pm) and theatre 7.30pm for a fun night at the movies and to reminisce our younger days. Cost of the theatre is $15pp.
Apart the safety of a bus, as opposed to driving on unfamiliar country roads, including at night, the bus also provides a wonderful opportunity for fellowship.

Tuesday, a day of leisure or you could for example visit Ophir and Duntryleague in the morning. Then maybe Milthorpe, Lake Conobolas, Mount Conobolas and/or a winery or two.
The main attraction at Ophir is the 560 ha Historic Ophir Reserve which apart from walking tracks includes numerous relics and the old cemetery.
Duntryleague (Woodward St Orange) by any measure this is an extraordinary building. It was built in 1876 for the hugely successful local businessman, James Dalton. Dalton died in 1919 and sixteen years later Duntryleague became the Duntryleague Golf Course. Could be a “fashionable” lunch option.
Milthorpe; another option, refer to “Sunday; getting there” for details.
Lake Conobolas is at the foothills of Mount Conobolas this pristine lake is a haven for birds and native wildlife with a circular cycle/ walking track. Situated about 10 km southwest of Orange.
Mount Canobolas is an extinct volcano and the highest mountain in the region. The view from the 1395m peak is worth the short drive from town through orchards and vineyards via Lake Conobolas. Situated about 13 kilometres southwest of Orange.
Emmaville Cottage (open from 9.00am - 4.00pm) with connections to Banjo Paterson. It was relocated to the Botanic Gardens (300 Hill Street, a natural undulating 17 hectare site which features an impressive native and exotic plant collection.
Whilst there are many wineries, two that are open on a Tuesday include Heifer Station Wines and Swinging Bridge Wines.
Wednesday, returning home
Once you get back to Lithgow you have the same two options as detailed in “getting there”, either the GWH or Bells Line of Road.
However if time permits detour off the GWH at Bathurst (east side) to:
Mayfield Garden, near Oberon is Australia’s largest privately-owned, cool climate garden; Mayfield is a living legacy of the Hawkins family who took their inspiration from the best gardens in Europe. Beautiful in every season with pathways designed to be explored and so many nooks-and-crannies to discover.

Investment Group - October
Probus Investment Group last meeting was on Tuesday 18th October. Even though numbers were down due to travel commitments and medical appointments, we enjoyed an excellent and very informative presentation by Cathy Turner on the world of lithium. Cathy’s presentation covered the many uses for lithium over and above the much talked about lithium batteries which power everything from mobile phones to electric vehicles. Then there are different sources of lithium and the countries who are major players in the mining of lithium, of which Australia is a major and growing player in the global supply of lithium.
Once our brains had been fed on everything there is to know about lithium, it was time to feed ourselves on a homemade carrot cake, which was enjoyed by all.
The next Investment Group meeting will be held on Tuesday 15th November at my home. Topic and presenter yet to be determined.

TEN PIN BOWLING REPORT - October 2022
Ten Pin Bowling took place last Friday with 8 players in attendance. Pleasingly there was an even split between girls & boys.
As we have come to expect David was a clear winner on the boys side whilst Jeanette continued her good form for the girls.
The next and last Bowling activity for the year will take place on Friday, 18 November. It would be good to see some of the people who indicated earlier in the year that they were interested in participating come along.”
Cheers

Live Theatre October 2022
Mamma Mia - The Concourse Chatswood October 2022
This month our Theatre party to Willoughby Theatre Company’s production of Mamma Mia at The Concourse Theatre Chatswood attracted a great response from 34 members and guests. A huge thank-you to all who supported us that evening!!
Our next planned theatre parties are as follows:
Big Fish – SYMT Hornsby RSL Friday 20th January 2023
Sydney Youth Musical Theatre proudly presents Big Fish, a heartfelt, powerful, and truly magical musical about the stories we use to define ourselves. Edward Bloom has lived a full and fantastical life. Populated by witches, giants, circus-folk and mermaids, marked by true love that stops time in its tracks, and framed by heroics that push limits of believability. Showcasing some of Sydney's best young performers, Big Fish a 'big fish' of a tale itself - magnificent, spectacular, fantastical, and overflowing with love.
Tickets $41, please pay into Activities account
Include Surname & Fish
Tina -The Tina Turner Musical
We also want to ascertain interest in attending The Tina Turner Musical in June/July 2023,
at The Theatre Royal Sydney (opening May 2023).
Direct from Broadway, this smash hit musical phenomenon is a celebration of an unstoppable woman who became the Queen of Rock n’ Roll.
With 37 award nominations including BEST NEW MUSICAL (Olivier Awards) and BEST MUSICAL (Tony Awards), this heart-pumping production is guaranteed to raise the roof at Theatre Royal Sydney.
Featuring iconic songs including, “Simply The Best”, “What’s Love Got To Do With It”, and “Proud Mary”, this story of joy, passion and resilience is as important now as ever.
Tina Turner didn’t just break the rules, she rewrote them and now you can experience her triumphant story live on stage.
We will put out an interest sheet at our October and November meetings. Prices inclusive of return Bus Transport is expected to be $150 each which is reasonable value compared to the current non-group ticket only price of $169.
Stay safe,

Walking - October 2022
Many thanks to the 22 members that joined me for the Kirribilli to Cremorne Point wharf walk earlier this month. It was an excellent day for an interesting walk, from Milson Point train station to the ferry wharf at Cremorne Point.
I am always interested in getting ideas for new walks, that are not too far to travel from Castle Hill/West Pennant Hills.
Please contact me if you have any interesting walks.
Regardless that most of the walkers will be in Orange, the next walk will be on 8th Nov and hopefully I will advise you at the general meeting where we will be walking.
