President's Report

President’s Report - June 2022
We have just completed the membership renewal period. There have been some resignations and so there are now some vacancies available. The committee has decided to open membership for applications for the next month as per Jeff Swan’s membership report.
May I remind you that we have capitation and gender balance requirements as per our bylaws and an application process that needs to be followed.
The last month continues to be a month of ups and downs for a number of our members with family stresses, operations and illnesses. Thank you to Toni and Ken for their excellent job as welfare officers and to all the members for their support of those going through tough times.
Fortunately, the weather has been more conducive to outdoor activities, albeit a little chilly. May I encourage you to get out and “have an airing” in whichever activity you enjoy or perhaps try one you haven’t done before.

June 2022 Welfare Report
Good morning, all,
Well, this month has had many ups and downs with members.
Our thoughts and positive vibes go out to those struggling with family issues and positive vibes to all those during the recovery process from operations or recovering from illnesses.
Wintertime is a time to take extra care when out and about with so much flu spreading itself around. I must admit, I wear a mask whenever possible if out and about and find it to be a bit of a security blanket. Hopefully it is helping. Remember Covid is still active so take that extra step to stay safe.
Congratulations to all those starting to join us again in our many activities. It is great to see the club thriving once again and thank you to the leaders for staying active during difficult times.
Please contact Ken or myself if you know of anyone that may need help in any way at all.
Stay healthy

Activities & Leaders
As a result of the sign-up sheets at the Foundation Meeting and expressions of interest on application forms we have set up numerous activities and interest groups.
Club Covid 19 Policy
We have set down a Covid 19 policy for the club. Essentially we will abide by the NSW health guidelines. We ask all members to respect the health and wellbeing of their fellow members, and therefore do not attend activities unless they are fully vaccinated. We have no desire to get into a situation where we need to physically check every attendee to determine their vaccination status. We are relying on the integrity of our members and the fact that they are endangering their friends if they do not abide by this policy.

THROW COVID BEHIND US!
Photo by Tim Mossholder on Unsplash
The THROW COVID challenge – a VERY slow month for all of us – VERY long books in some cases. ThroCo runs from March to the end of August. Join us, read your own choice of book, post it and enjoy the rundowns of the other readers. Maybe you’ll see a book that might grab your attention??? If you wish to join but don’t do Facebook, send me an email and I’ll put it into the page on your behalf.
Since mid-May:
Agent 407: A South African Spy breaks her Silence by Olivia Forsyth: Olivia Forsyth is a spy who breaks her silence about the dying years of Apartheid. Nothing is as it seems. Many names mentioned unfamiliar to our country, and not a lot of explanation about who they are. The last part of the book is about her life after she moved to the UK and exited the world of spying.
The White Queen by Philippa Gregory: Also a Television series. Nothing much has changed when it comes to politics. Brother turns on brother, the throne of England is a stake. Set in the time of the War of the Roses, before the times of the Tudors. Hopefully the TV series was better than what a lot thought about the book.
The Storm Sister by Lucinda Riley: Book 2 in the series ‘The Seven Sisters’. Just as intriguing as Book 1. The second sister, Ally, has deserted her musical bent to become a world class yachtswoman. She has a deeply passionate and doomed love affair that changes her destiny, so she decides to follow the trail of clues left by her deceased adoptive father, Pa Salt, to discover her roots. She finds herself in Norway, in a world of Grieg, romances of the past, betrayal and loss. Ally learns about Anna Landvik, who lived in Norway 100 years before, and who ghost-sang the first performance of Grieg’s ‘Solveig Song’ from the wings of the stage. Now Ally must fathom how this woman can be part of her own background, how music has been part of her inheritance and how she can learn to love again. This is every bit as good as Book 1. Five to go.
Showtime by Judy Nunn: Based on the Theatre industry in eastern Australia in the 1800’s to post WWI. Written partly during Covid so the author couldn’t research the ideas as much as she normally does. Two British immigrant families move into the entertainment industry, showing anything from burlesque to Shakespeare. Lots of detail about costumes and sets that would interest theatre goers. Federation and politics also play out in the background as these two rival families focus on their productions.

Book Club Report - June 2022
We had our last meeting on 9th June. We discussed Dear Mrs. Bird by A.J. Pearce. Mostly well liked, we found the British attitude to carrying on as normal even though bombs are dropping around you, the stiff upper lip and the general naivety very refreshing.
Our new book is: The women with silver wings by Katherine Sharp Landdeck. Our next meeting is on Thursday July 21st.
Happy reading

Cycling Group: June 2022
Hi Cyclists
A very pleasant ride from Rydalmere Ferry Wharf to Meadowbank on Wednesday 8th June. 5 of us were pedalling, and Lawrence was e-biking. Weather was fine, but quite cold. A welcome coffee stop at Meadowbank before returning along the north side of the river.
Our next outing is planned for Wednesday 13th July. A longer ride this time! We will ride from Gosford along the side of Brisbane Waters to Woy Woy where we will enjoy a coffee and a snack, then return the same way. There is some great scenery along the way. The ride is all on cycle paths. Its mostly flat with just a few uphill climbs.
Lets plan to meet at Cherrybrook Community Centre Car Park at 9AM. We can car share.
When we stop for a coffee, we’ll plan the ride calendar for the next 6 months. There are lots of great rides in The Hills, around Parramatta River and on the Central Coast to name a few.
How about dusting off your bike, pumping up the tyres and having a practice ride? If anyone needs a bit of help to get their bike back to roadworthy, let me know and I’ll be pleased to lend a hand.
Please bring water, helmet and sunscreen. Please advise me by Wednesday 6th July if you will be joining the ride.

Jewish Museum Tour
A small group of Probus members enjoyed a lunch at a cafe in Darlinghurst prior to attending a guided tour of The Jewish Museum on Wednesday 15 June.
The tour was very informative and emotive. Maps and pie charts depicted the extent of the loss of six million Jewish lives in the counties of Europe in the Holocaust.
Culminating the tour we were privileged to hear first hand of the experiences of a Holocaust survivor. This was possible through an interactive Hologram. Enabling the audience to ask questions of Yvonne who was sent to Auschwitz from the Ghetto at fifteen years of age. It was an amazing personal recount.
She eventually settled in Sydney living on the North Shore.

Activities (Draft only)
Whilst we are still considering the many exciting options, some initial thoughts:
- Sunday, drive to Orange via Bells Line of Road to Lithgow, then the Great Western Hwy (GWH)
- 2.30pm The Orange Heritage Walking Trail, meet at motel
- Monday, tourist drive, a couple of alternatives:
- 8.30am meet outside motel and drive to Eugowra, Parks, CSIRO Observatory, Manildra (dinner & show) and back to Orange
- 8.30am meet outside motel and drive to Eugowra, Forbes, Parks, Mahindra (dinner & show) and back to Orange
- with the CSIRO Observatory is situated about 20km north of Parkes and therefore insufficient time to include Forbes, thus whilst both are available you need to determine your preference.
- 8.30am meet outside motel and drive to Eugowra, Parks, CSIRO Observatory, Manildra (dinner & show) and back to Orange
Forbes has always been known for its heritage buildings set alongside gorgeous river banks and leafy parks. See its changing face, from colonial gold rush times to the modern day. Forbes also has the fabulous McFeeters Motor Museum’s remarkable collection of vehicles dating back to 1905 (possibly the best collection I have seen).
Parkes was named after the father of Australian federation, the town was once best known for its radio telescope that helped broadcast the moon landing. Today, this beautiful heritage town is famous for the hordes of Elvis fans that make an annual pilgrimage to honour the King.
The Henry Parkes Centre and Information Centre – a must-stop for pop-culture and a glimpse into yesteryear, this is a four museum collections under the one roof: The King’s Castle Elvis Exhibit, Parkes Motor Museum, Parkes Museum and the Antique Machinery Collection. www.henryparkescentre.com.au
CSIRO Observatory, affectionately known as ‘The Dish’, is one of the largest radio telescopes in the Southern Hemisphere and was the location for the Australian film of the same name in 2000. www.parkes.atnf.csiro.au

Amusu Theatre & Movie Poster Museum is situated in the small town of Manildra and Australia's oldest operational picture theatre! A 1930's Art Deco Theatre featuring many of the original fixtures.
We are aiming to be at Manildra to have dinner at the Royal Hotel (6.00pm) and then go to the Amusu Theatre and Movie Posture Museum (show 7.30pm) for a fun night at the movies to reminisce our younger days.

Hola!
Our members this month played at North Ryde Golf Course 03/06.
The course was wet under foot in places although in great shape considering the previous weather and how other courses have been holding up.
We had a good field of players showing up with 7 playing 18 holes and 8 playing 9

As we had the Broken Hill trip, we will be reviewing some of the images taken at Broken Hill at the next meeting. A new folder has been created to put these images in on the Facebook site.

Supermoon Tuesday 14 June
A super moon is where the full moon is closer to the earth than normal and looks much bigger. What is more impressive is that if you stand at the end of Blues Point the moon will rise over the middle of the harbour bridge, which is very rare.
Lynne Henderson, Gerrard Siddle & Andrew Little went to Blues Point Reserve on Tuesday 14th June to photograph the super moon coming up over the "horizon" (around 4.45pm), behind the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Unfortunately there was a small amount of cloud around the horizon (eastern suburbs) & we didn't see the moon until it was around halfway up to the bottom of the bridge.
However, after that we had clear sky & we all took many photos of the super moon (see below).
A new album has been created on the Photography Facebook site to copy super moon images to.

TEN PIN BOWLING REPORT - June 2022
Notwithstanding the small turnout last Friday, those who did attend enjoyed the games & friendly banter.
Jeanette & Bev shared the spoils on the girls side whilst David was again superior for the boys.
The standout highlight of the morning was David’s superb 186 pin effort in game 2 which set a new record for WPHC Probus Club. It’s a pity there were so few to witness such a feat.
The third Friday in July falls in the school holidays which from past experience must be avoided, hence our next Bowling activity will be on Friday, 19 August.
Cheers
Doug

Walking - June 2022
In June, for 15 members, the walking activity was a good walk around Parramatta Lake. It was a lovely sunny winter day, no wind and the reflections off the water created some lovely photos. There was coffee at the café after the walk. It was great to see the walkers back again.
The next walk is the12th July, currently plan to from the Huntley’s Point wharf across the Gladesville Bridge, around Five Dock Bay to Chiswick Wharf followed by quick swim across the harbor back to the parked cars.
For the non-swimmers there is a short wait for the ferry.
Please book the date in your calendar. All are welcome.
Email advising full detail to be sent closer to the date.

Wine & Cheese June 2022
Around 20 people braved the cold weather to come to Wine and Cheese at the Shenstone household on Friday 10th June. We enjoyed lots of hot food and wine around the slow combustion wood fire.
Next month W& C will be on Friday 8th July at the Henderson’s house.
