President’s Report - November

At last we can get together for a couple of meetings before 2021 finishes. We are allowed to have 68 people in the Red Gum Hall at Cherrybrook Community Centre for our monthly meeting on Wednesday 24th November. We can also get the whole club together for our annual Christmas Party at Madison Function Centre on 15th December. I am certainly looking forward to catching up with many members that I have not seen for months.

As it is the end of the year, I would like to especially mention a couple of our members who have worked extra hard over the last 12 months to keep the club functioning. Andrew Little has kept producing the Club Newsletter every month during the lockdown period. There is a lot of work in putting together the Newsletter, and Andrew has made certain that is published every month and that members have some sort of communication regarding what is happening. Toni Smith has made sure that we had a guest speaker for every Zoom meeting. It has been difficult to get speakers who agree to presenting in the Zoom format. However, Toni has managed to get someone for every meeting. Finally I should mention Rob Clarke, who has facilitated our Zoom meetings and allowed us to use his Zoom licence to connect with club members in a digital format.

I am looking forward to seeing as many members as possible on Wednesday 24th.

Welfare Report November 2021
This is the last report for 2021. I know you will all be looking forward to being together for our last face to face meeting for the year. It will be wonderful to see almost everyone (well at least 68 of us!!). The noise will be deafening.

Our Christmas party on the 15 December will be our final get together to catch up for what has been a tough year for us socially, physically and mentally.

A few of us have had to cope with some major medical and family issues and  I know a lot of you have been keeping in contact and supporting each other.

I'm looking forward to seeing  many of you and celebrating at the Christmas party.
Please let either Terry or myself know if you know of anyone we should make contact with who needs help or support.

November Meeting Speaker - Richard A Harris - Imagine: A Novel

Picture
Richard A Harris, is a dreamer with many talents.

He is best known as one of Australia’s top Vascular Surgeons and for spearheading
the rebuild of a major metropolitan public hospital. Richard believes in equal access
to the best possible healthcare, quality care delivered not only in Australia but
around the world.

Apart from surgery, Richard has been a musician, a backpacker, a poet, and a
painter. He loves to travel and has ventured to over 80 countries so far.
It has been a hard couple of years for many. Richard lost his wonderful partner and
mother of his 2 gorgeous children in early 2020 to breast cancer.
Lockdown has not allowed for travel so Richard has found comfort in one of his other
passions - writing.

He is a writer who fell in love with words a long time ago. He has always had a
yearning to set some dreams, adventures, and love down on paper. His first book
Imagine: A Novel does just that. Richard’s dreams for what a truly compassionate
world could look like are woven into a beautiful love story and journey around the
world which has been inspired by Lennon’s iconic song Imagine.

Richard lives in Sydney Australia and is extremely grateful for all of the love that
surrounds him. Like Lennon, he is a dreamer but he’s not the only one. He hopes
you will join him envisioning a world of connection, love, and peace.

About Imagine: A Novel
It has been 50 years since John Lennon and Yoko Ono released their revolutionary
song Imagine. It is a classic that the world holds as a symbol of peace. Imagine
recently featured in the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony and is listed in the
Rolling Stone Magazine’s top 20 songs of all time.

Richard Harris’ novel was inspired by this musical masterpiece and takes you on a
journey around the world with the harmonies of the music in mind. Imagery and
dreams are intricately woven in a number of love stories that intertwine and roll back
on each other like the chorus and verses of a song.

Imagine: A Novel’s deeper meanings are inlaid with dreams of the future. Richard’s
hope is that the books purity of message, which is all about love, will enchant and
inspire, leaving the reader with a rekindled appreciation of life. The ideas within the
novel will challenge the readers thinking and have them questioning their own ideal
vision for the future. Richard dreams of starting conversations that will help to
change the world.

There is of course a villain or two; a bit of drama here or there as it is not a perfect
world, but as you dance from one page to another, the words will take you along a
journey full of evolution, revolution, peace and generosity.

Activities & Leaders

As a result of the sign-up sheets at the Foundation Meeting and expressions of interest on application forms we have set up numerous activities and interest groups.

Club Covid 19 Policy

We have set down a Covid 19 policy for the club. Essentially we will abide by the NSW health guidelines. This means that until the 1st of December you cannot attend club activities unless you are fully vaccinated. After that time we ask all members to respect the health and wellbeing of their fellow members, and therefore do not attend activities unless they are fully vaccinated. We have no desire to get into a situation where we need to physically check every attendee to determine their vaccination status. We are relying on the integrity of our members and the fact that they are endangering their friends if they do not abide by this policy.

Newsletter Copy Deadline

Please note that there will be no December newsletter.
The combined December 21 & January 22 newsletter will be published in January

Please provide your contributions for the December & January Newsletter by Friday 21st January 2022.

Please email to Enio Dona or Bev Davison for activities or direct to Andrew Little for other articles.

Alternatively place directly into Dropbox under WPHD Probus Activities / Activity Newsletter Contributions / Contributions – 2022 01

COVID SHMOVID – WE’VE GOT BOOKS!

Two and a half months in and we’ve totalled 29 Books between us. Some very good reads this month too.
The COVID SHMOVID challenge will run until the end of February. You can join the challenge at any time. Just search Facebook for WPH&D Book Challenge and join us. Once you’re in, choose the number of books you think you can read (+ 1 more) and get reading.
This past Month:
Magpie’s Bend by Maya Linnell: Rural Romance and an easy read. Set in the fictitious town of Bridgefield in Victoria, a romance evolves between a local, Lara, and a newcomer, journalist Toby. The close-knit community are trying to save their general store from being taken over by outsiders.

It Started with Paris by Cathy Kelly: Another easy read. Michael asks Katy to marry him at the top of the Eiffel Tower. The story revolves around the excitement and relationships of their closest family member from their small hometown of Bridgeport in Ireland, leading up to their wedding.

An Almost Perfect Holiday by Lucy Diamond: the author has a great writing style, and she knows how to tell a story with humour and understanding. Three women, experiencing difficulties in their lives and their relationships go on holiday to cottages run by Lorna. All are mothers and all have teenagers. They have many things to work through in their own ways, alongside teenagers being teenagers, and trying to have the ‘perfect holiday’ that many find just doesn’t happen.

Becoming Michelle Obama: reviewed in past newsletter – narrated by the author so she was able to put inflection and emphasis into the story. This has been a popular book read by quite a few in the group now.

The Taliban Cricket Club: A TOTALLY GRIPPING BOOK! Rukhsana is a female journalist in Kabul, but then the Taliban come back into power. Suddenly life turns back to the full burqua, a place of fear and a place where life is cheap and very dispensable. Women are no more than possessions. When one of the Talib leaders wants her for his wife, she must escape – but how with no money to pay the smugglers. Then the Talib announce a cricket tournament, with the winning team going to Pakistan to be trained further. No one in Kabul knows how to play cricket, but Rukhsana learnt to play when she studied in Pakistan – but she is a woman! Seeing this as the only chance for her brother and cousins to escape Kabul, she sets about training the team, dressed in disguise. The story is full of fear, deceit, unfairness, and bullying, with many only interested in saving their own skins, but it is also a story of love, loyalty, braver and the importance of family. The ending was full of intense drama.

Unbreakable by Jelena Dokic/Jessica Halloran: very confronting story of the mental and physical torture this very talented lady suffered by her father. She has worked hard to become the knowledgeable, self-assured, strong, resilient and happy person that she is today.

The Year the Maps Changed by Danielle Binks: a really lovely book about one extraordinary year. Set in 1999, in Sorrento, Victoria, Fred (Winifred) is living with her adoptive father Luca, and her Pop after her mum died when she was six. Now she is in Year 6, and she must cope with a Luca’s new partner and her son, who is also in her composite 5/6 class. She feels pushed to the side when a new baby is to arrive. Luca is so kind and patient but it doesn’t stop her feeling that she is sidelined. Then a group of Kosovar-Albanian refugees, fleeing the civil war in their country, is brought to a ‘safe haven’ in her town. Their fate becomes intertwined with the lives of Fred and her family in a very unexpected way. She must come to grips with what is the morally right thing to do, and her family follow in her wake.

We also received our current book, The Other Half of Augusta Hope by Joanna Glen.

We decided to bring our next meeting forward to Thursday 9th December, as we all get busy in Dec and the 23rd seemed to close to Christmas.  We will meet at Rosemary Clarke’s home.

Day Trips (Bus/Train/Ferry)

Picture
It is wonderful to see Probus members beginning to get back to some type of normality after the lockdown.

Unfortunately, the Chowder Bay Walking Tour and lunch at Ripples on Friday 19th November was cancelled because of lack of numbers.

I have been enquiring at a variety of places for tours and visits for probus members next year but most places haven't restarted their tours. I am thinking it would be good to have a river cruise in February.  I have booked a visit to The Westmead Institute For Medical Research WIMR on Wednesday 13 July 10.00am to 12 Noon.

If anyone has any suggestions for tours in 2022, please let me know.

Kiama Trips

Sun 20 - Wed 23 and Sun 27 - Wed 30 MARCH 2022

As previously advised we transferred our October bookings to March next year, which resulted in some changes, the amended lists (as per last month) are:
Picture
Picture
Accommodation:
We have booked the “Park Ridge Retreat” Gerringong, just south of Kiama, providing circa 4 star accommodation) and is adjacent the local shops.                https://www.parkridgeretreat.com.au
Except for single and triple rooms (refer table) our room only “group booking” tariff is $465.00/room for three nights ($155.00/night). Room allocation is mainly on the ground and middle floors.
Motel Meals:
  • Hot Breakfast (Bacon & eggs and other choices) at $15.00 per person, tea, coffee, and juice.
  • One Course Dinner at $25 per person, or 2 courses $35 choices of meals to be confirmed.

Advisedly everyone has now paid their $100 deposit, whilst the majority is refundable, there is a $300.00 non-refundable group booking charge. We will require the accommodation balance of $365.00 (single $320 and triple $557) by the end of February.
All payments should be paid into the Activities Account and identified with your Surname & Kiama.
BSB        633-000
Acc         167288844

Evening Meals
Whilst we need to confirm Sunday night, we have booked the following,
  • Sunday; Gerringong Bowling Club, Pacific Ave, Werrs Beach (6.30pm)
Large modern club, opposite the beach with our own first floor room
  • Monday; Cronin’s Hotel, 29 Belinda Street, Gerringong (6.30pm)
Lynne and I dined here last year, very good bistro
  • Tuesday; Olive & Vine, 87 Manning Street, Kiama (7.30pm)
Highly recommended by one of our members

Note; links are to existing menus and are not necessarily what will be available in March.
Also due to our numbers we have a 7.30 booking and a set menu for Olive & Vine, currently two courses $40 or three courses $50. Send me an email if you require a copy of the menu.
We have made reservations assuming full attendance by our respective groups. Therefore can you please let me know by the end of February if you will not be attending any of these venues and we will adjust our reservations.

Activities
Whilst the numbers on these two trips grossly exceed previous trips (12 to 20) making it extremely difficult to organise as our numbers exceed what most tourist operators can cater for without making reservations.
Whilst I will provide some day trips suggestions, say departing at 8.00am to allow for group travel, car-pooling etc., others may prefer to be in small groups and then all come together as one group for the evening meals.
Thus we recommend you do some homework (at least check out some web sites etc.) to ascertain any preferences.
The hotel webpage includes a number of links to various local attractions.

https://www.parkridgeretreat.com.au/attractions.html

Costs
Except for the stated and maintained accommodation costs, it is best if all other costs, e.g. breakfasts, lunches, dinners and all activities are paid for separately, by the participants.

Gardening

GARDENING GROUP - November
We had planned a visit to the Auburn Botanical Gardens for our October Gardening Group outing.

Unfortunately, the weather forecast for the day predicted torrential rain and some hail.
To give us all a chance to catch up we postponed the visit to the Gardens and went straight to lunch at the Dooleys Waterview Club, in Silverwater. After enjoying a good catch up over a nice lunch we all commented that the rain still hadn’t arrived – and better still the rain held off until we were all home and our cars safe from any potential hail.
Picture
Thursday: 9 December
As this will be our last Gardening Group day for the year, we’ll revisit a form of our old routine - ie:
10.00am meet in the Bunning Castle Hill garden area, for a stroll though the nursey and gardening supplies area (for old times sake).

After our meander around the gardening section, we’ll move on for lunch at:
Beanmeister Café, (1/10 Salisbury Rd Castle Hill) for an end of year lunch and anticipatory celebration of being able to visit gardens and floral displays in 2022.

Please let Sue Small know if you’ll be joining the day as café bookings are essential.

MOVIE GROUP - November

The Castle Hill Events Cinemas have finally reopened.
At this stage all screenings are either in the afternoons or evenings with no sessions advertised for Mondays or Tuesdays!!!
I’ll check with the cinema staff to confirm days and session times.

If the cinema is open all week, and of specific interest to us, the first Tuesday of the month (our usual ‘movie day’),
  • Our next Movie Day will be Tuesday 7 December.

Unfortunately, as yet not too many movies are screening.

One possibility for us is ‘No Time To Die’ – the latest James Bond film.

If screenings are only on in the afternoons we’ll change our routine and have brunch/ lunch first then see the movie.

Brunch / Lunch will be at our usual venue, ie Cosmo Café.

I’ll send out an email confirming movie times and brunch / lunch details as soon as the Events Cinema confirm session times.
Please let Sue Small know if you’d like to be added to the Movie Group email list.

At our last photography meeting we reviewed some of the images taken at Eastern Creek mortar way with the super eights, the low and high key images which was out set project for the month and images from our outing to the city. Much of the discussion was around composition and how some of the images could be improved with a little bit of cropping.

Initially Lightroom and Photoshop look daunting however with some hands-on practice though the workshops users will be able to edit their photos so that they “pop”.

Next Outing
Our next outing takes place on Wednesday the 1st of December, 10 of our members will be having dinner at the Kirribilli Club followed by taking sunset images of Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden, then the harbour and Luna Park at night.

Photography Tip: Choice of shutter speed depends on how far the image is away and if you wish to freeze the action of a moving object or person. Both examples require higher than normal shutter speeds.

Next Meeting
Next Meeting: 7:30pm on Wednesday January 19th, at the Clarke’s residence.
Have a merry Christmas with your families and make sure you take some photos.

Live Theatre November 2021

Hamilton at The Lyric Theatre on Wednesday, 3 November at 7:00pm.
Our theatre party of 27 members and guests recently attended Hamilton at the Lyric Theatre.

Thank-you to all who supported the night & to Bain for the attached photographs!!

The Addams Family on Friday, 28 January 2022 at 7:30pm:
Our re-scheduled Theatre Party to The Addams Family presented by Sydney Youth Musical Theatre at Hornsby RSL Club is now in the process of being finalised with around 21 attendees carried forward from our July 21 postponed booking who we will contact shortly.

Additional members and guests are most welcome to attend and will also be preceded by dinner at the club for those interested.

By way of background: the musical opened on Broadway in April 2010 and ran for over 500 performances and was nominated for two Tony Awards.

“The Addams Family”, have lived by their unique values for hundreds of years; however, the family encounters an unforeseen obstacle when Wednesday, now eighteen years old, decides to introduce her new "normal" boyfriend, Lucas Beineke, to the family. Wednesday has found herself experiencing a surprising new sensation, one that frightens both her and her family: she has fallen in love. In protest, Uncle Fester enlists the help of the Addams' ancestors to call an end to the young budding romance. Morticia, Gomez, and Pugsley worry about her changing ways. As the Addams and the Beinekes come together for dinner one fateful evening, chaos ensues, and the two families find themselves admitting deep secrets and coming together in ways they never would have imagined.   The Addams family must face up to the one horrible thing they've managed to avoid for generations: change.

Look forward to sharing that evening with you all

Stay safe,

Walking Group

Walking - November

An enjoyable walk was held on Nov 9th, with 15 persons attending, walking around Sydney Harbour including metro train to Town Hall,  walk down to the Darling Harbour, Cockle Bay Wharf, walk north pass the aquarium, pass King St wharf, pass Barangaroo Wharf, on the new walkway pass the Crown Casino, pass the hole for the ‘in progress’ metro station, around Barangaroo Reserve, up to Argyle Pl, to the Harbour View Hotel for an excellent lunch.  The surprise to me was that most persons wanted to continue onwards walking across the Sydney Harbour bridge to Milsons Point Train station.

Thankyou to all the members that supported walking activity during 2020.  There will no walks arranged for December or January due to holidays and the heat.  Hope that we are all back to normal by Feb 2022.
