President's Report

President’s Report - June

The cold weather of Winter has certainly arrived. As a result I am sure we will see a decline in attendance at our outdoor activities. However, there are still plenty of club activities available to members. Movies, Book Club, Book Challenge, Ten Pin bowling, Dining out, Wine & Cheese, Theatre, Mixed Social group and Investment Group all meet indoors. So nobody can say that there is nothing in the calendar to help us through these colder months.

On a pleasing note, we will be welcoming eight new members at this month’s general meeting. All of these are friends of existing members who have heard what a wonderful club we have and have been told about the wealth of social activities that we enjoy. We will be inducting seven of them at our general meeting on Wednesday 23rd June, so please go out of your way to introduce yourself and to make them feel welcome.

Unfortunately overseas travel is still unavailable to us, so Max Henderson is doing a great job organising intra state trips to Kiama and Broken Hill. These are both well supported and will provide another opportunity for members to socialise.

I look forward to seeing you at the next activity.

Welfare

Welfare Report June 2021

With so many activities up and going now we are certainly keeping in contact with one another and enjoying each other’s company.

On the 2nd June a number of Probus members and friends attended the funeral of Carolyn Carroll at the Castlebrook Cemetery and Crematorium. The service was really well done with magnificent weather enabling us to make our way over for the burial. Afterwards we met at Entrata Restaurant where Rodney, Carolyn and John’s son, works as the chef. We were able to remember the happy times we shared with Carolyn and toasted her farewell.

If you know of anyone who needs help, is not well please let either Terry Ridge or myself know so we can make contact.

Environmental Change Is Required For Disposable Coffee Cups

Our current disposable coffee/tea cups cost around 20 to 25 cents each.

They are NOT recyclable due to the plastic membrane that lines them and can take up to 30 years to degrade.
Our landfills are choking with the daily arrival of 2 million “disposable” cups per day.

France banned single use disposable in 2020, other countries are following this trend.  Coles & Woolworths both announced that they will stop selling single use plastic tableware, including cups by 1 July this year.

SOLUTION?
Buy yourselves a reusable coffee cup that shows that you’re “environmentally responsible” and form a habit of using them daily (keep in your bag or car), similar to the use of plastic reusable supermarket bags now.

Look in Target, Kmart or other similar stores and you will see there are a large range of reusable cups, especially the light insulated type that will keep your drink hot, or wine cold (use for white wine at wine & cheese nights).  They all have protective “no spill” lids.

BRING YOUR REUSABLE CUP TO OUR MONTHLY MEETINGS & RINSE IN THE SINK AFTER USE!
Desley

For those that have yet to buy a reusable coffee/tea cup, Aldi will have Thermos brand stainless steel double walled cups on sale on Saturday 26 June for $9.99. (Please note that I don't receive any remuneration from sales of these cups.....)

SIT – READ – CHILL!
Another 8 books read!

The ‘SIT – READ – CHILL’ Challenge will run from March to the end of August, and you can join at any time. You set your challenge and then aim to reach it.
To be part of this challenge, just search Facebook for WPH&D Book Challenge and join us.
This Month:

Heads You Win by Jeffrey Archer: This was such an exciting read. One of those sliding door scenarios – Alex Karpenko and his mother Elena escape from Russia – the flip of a coin decides where they end up and here the story splits into the Alex that goes to America and the Alex that goes to England. The journey towards the climax of their return to Russia is fascinating, intriguing, exciting and downright scary.

Widows by Lynda La Plante: A widow discovers the ledgers of all the crime details of her husband and his three friends in crime. When they are killed (or not??) the wives decide to take over their husbands’ exploits, battling the London underworld who want to take over where the husbands left off. Full of twists and interesting characters.

Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty: A book club read. Some crazy twists and a bit of wry humour. Set in a remote health and wellness retreat owned by a guru figure, 9 unsuspecting people arrive hoping to find some rest from their problems. They have no idea what is about to hit them. Some of the resolutions were a bit fantastical and a bit silly. Other books by the author have been better.

The Second Chance by Nicola Marsh: Set in a small Australian Country town, this book follows the stories of two women as they have the chance for romance. An easy read.

What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriaty: the story of a 39 year old mother of three who loses her memory of the last ten years of her life. As she stuggles to gain back the lost years of memories, she has reason to question why she has become the person she is, and what she needs to change to make her life a happier place.

The Chicken Sisters by KJ Dell’Antonia: Two sisters head up rival fried chicken restaurants and the family dramatics (at their worst) reach a head when they both enter the Food Channel’s ‘Food Wars’. The winning chicken team will receive an amazing $100K. The story covers family conflict and resolution, the importance of communication, aging, physical and mental health issues and also the happiness factor.

The Last Voyage of Mrs Henry Parker by Joanna Nell: Mrs Henry Parker (Evelyn), wife of the ship’s doctor is living out her final voyage aboard the “Golden Sunset” liner. Every night she dresses for dinner – gown, tiara, runners – or maybe it’s actually breakfast time? Things are sometimes very confusing for Evelyn, and she is sure that her husband Henry is missing. She has to find him. And on the way she regales her fellow passengers with her memories of the life of travelling the world in luxury as the doctor’s wife. This was a truly heart-warming read. Dementia is dealt with so sensitively, and the compassion of those who she meets is beautiful.

On Monday 21st June 17 Probus members will be travelling to the Australian Museum to experience the nation’s oldest cultural institution after its $57.5 million facelift.

An Aboriginal tour guide will take us through the exhibition ‘Unsettled’. These first-hand accounts are presented through long hidden historical documents, large-scale artworks, immersive experiences and never-before-seen objects from the Australian Museum collections and beyond.

We will be having lunch at the new ‘No1 William Restaurant’ on the museum’s roof top whilst looking at panoramic views across Hyde Park to Sydney Harbour.

As usual we will endeavour to ensure this will be a very flexible trip, with how much or little you do entirely up to you. We will try for a major attraction each day, preferably morning.
This will generally provide “free time” after lunch for the various other attractions, all of which will undoubtedly have various levels of appeal. Thus we recommend you do some homework (at least check out some web sites etc.) to ascertain any individual preferences.

The hotel webpage includes a number of links to various local attractions.

GARDENING GROUP - June
Our Gardening Group outing for June was scheduled to be a visit to Lisgar Gardens.  Unfortunately, the weather forecast for the day was a maximum our 13 deg and drizzling rain.

To avoid staying home on a cold, wet, miserable day, we met at Beanmeister Café for the morning.  This gave us all an opportunity to have a good catch up while enjoying brunch together.

Finally, we have restarted the Investment Group, with our first meeting since March last year was held on Thursday 27th May. This meeting was to plan and to discuss topics for future meetings. Our second meeting was held on Tuesday 15th June where we looked at three YouTube videos which then prompted an interesting discussion.

Future Investment Group meetings will be held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. The next meeting will be held at my home and the topic for discussion will be comparing using a stock broker verses an online share trading platform such as CommSec.

The usual enticement of a home baked cake will the available to all participants, along with tea and coffee.

MEN'S CLUB - June
The next activity for our Men’s Group will be on Wednesday the 7th July.  It will be an extremely interesting walk in Woolloomooloo - so save the date!!

Ian Palmer, who is a member of the “Fellowship of First Fleeters”,  will lead us on a history walk around Woolloomooloo.  It is an easy  3 km walk in a mostly flat area.
Following the walk we plan to have lunch at “Harry’s Cafe de Wheels” or a local hotel.

We will meet at 10am outside the Police Citizens Youth Club on the corner Cathedral Street and Riley Street (just down the hill from St Mary’s Cathedral).
You can catch the train, then from St James Station you walk across Hyde Park and down St Mary’s Road past the Cathedral.
If travelling by car, then the Domain Car Park is just across the street.

Please let me know if you plan to join us on this fascinating trip back in time!

MOVIE GROUP - JUNE
At our June movie day we saw June Again which is a heartfelt story of a twist of fate which gives the family matriarch ‘June’, played by Noni Hazlehurst, a reprieve from ongoing dementia. Much to the Families amazement, June re-enters the lives of her adult children, and learns that 'things haven't gone according to plan'. With limited time but plenty of pluck, she sets about trying to put everything, and everyone, back on track. When her meddling backfires, June sets out on a romantic journey of her own and discovers she needs help from the very people she was trying to rescue.

As usual, our Movie Group outing also included a good catch-up chat while enjoying brunch at Cosmo Café.
Our next Movie Day will be on Tuesday 6 July.  Unfortunately, the list of movies screening in July are not yet available.

Please let Sue Small know if you’d like to be added to the Movie group list to be kept updated on upcoming Movie Days

Photography

Probus Photography Group
Our photography group is now back to normal with meetings and excursions. Our meetings are on the third Wednesday of each month. In my absence Bain has been holding the reigns, thank you Bain.

Andrew Little organised an outing to the World Press photography 2020 winners at the Mitchell Library. Thank you, Andrew. We had 16 attendees and the photographs on display were confronting. The world press photographers travel to locations where there is a story to tell and most of the places they travelled to are where there is suppression, disasters, and trauma. Apparently bad news sells newspapers and makes the news!!! It made us all think how lucky we are to live in Australia and the issues we face are first world. Following the exhibition, we had lunch in parliament house with the bells ringing for a sitting of parliament. We thought Peter Stanton was going to be arrested for trying to sneak into the upper house chamber whilst it was sitting.

Training on Lightroom and Photoshop
To make photos “pop” they need to be post processed. Lightroom is a program that helps to organise and process photos. Bain has kindly offered to run a workshop on Lightroom for the group. The date is to be advised.
Photoshop allows photographers to be more creative with photos and following the Lightroom workshop Rob will schedule some Photoshop workshops.
If you are interested in these workshops please let me know.

Ten Pin Bowling

TEN PIN BOWLING REPORT - June

After a break of 15 months Ten Pin Bowling finally got up and running last Friday with a
new start time of 10 am.
Eleven Probus members took part with a near even split between females and males
proving it is an activity for both genders.
On the playing, front David & the two Bobs showed some form among the boys whilst
Toni and Jeanette lead the way amongst the girls.

Following play, six of us went to the Castle Hill Tavern to enjoy a good lunch at a very
reasonable price.

Our next game will be on Friday, 16 July and I hope we can build on the eleven members
we had last Friday. As usual, I will text those who have expressed an interest in playing a
week out from the scheduled date to establish who wishes to participate. Those who
have not expressed an interest previously but who would like to participate can call me, or add their name and mobile number to sheet at monthly meeting.

Walking Group

Walking - June
The walking group of 14 persons (should have been 16) had a lovely flat walk around Caddies Creek in Rouse Hill last month followed by coffee at the Kellyville North Shopping Centre.  It was good to see Greg come back after knee surgery, and John join us again.  Toni finally got Ken to join in for a walk that was not on a golf course,  Great to see you all.

Walking it something that we all should more of, as per the benefits below
Walking for an average of 30 minutes or more a day can lower the risk of heart disease, stroke by 35% percent and Type 2 diabetes by 40%.
It’s not just your heart and muscles that benefit from walking.
Regular physical activity can help:
  • reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke
  • manage weight, blood pressure and blood cholesterol
  • prevent and control diabetes
  • reduce your risk of developing some cancers
  • maintain your bone density, reducing your risk of osteoporosis and fractures
  • improve balance and coordination, reducing your risk of falls and other injuries
  • improve our daily mood which cumulatively leads to better mental health

The next walk is on the second Tuesday of the month July 13th, and I am planning to walk from Wynyard Train Station to the new section of walkway around the Barangaroo Reserve followed by Crown Sydney Hotel and past Barangaroo and back to Town Hall Station. Optus card required for the Metro.  Again, it is a flat walk with plenty of stops and plenty of coffee.   Toilets are also available.  Hope to see more of you.

Wine & Cheese

Picture
On Friday 11th June our Wine and Cheese night was hosted at Cathy and David Turner’s house. It was a chilly night outside but very cosy indoors. Around 30 people came along and enjoyed some delicious home baked delights and Beveridge of choice.

The next wine & cheese night will be on Friday 13th August. The venue is yet to be decided.

There will be no W&C night in July
