President's Report

President’s Report - May

The great club trip to Bright in Victoria was completed in April, and what a fabulous time was enjoyed by the 57 members who attended. The weather was unbelievably good, the scenery memorable and everyone enjoyed the accommodation and meals in the country towns.

A fantastic job by the organising committee of Rob Clarke (leader), Andrew Little, Ken Lewis, Ken Smith and Max Henderson. And I mustn’t forget to mention Ian Roberts, who managed all the incoming and outgoing payments. I am sure everyone will enjoy the photos in this edition of the newsletter.

On other club matters, we have had an extremely rewarding rate of membership renewals for the coming year. As a club we must be doing most things rights, as all but two of our members have paid their subscription fees for the 2021/2 year. That means that we do have some vacancies, and your committee has decided to accept up to six new members.

So if you have friends who you believe would enjoy and contribute to the club, send them an expression of interest form (obtainable from Jeff Swan our membership officer). Remember that this does not guarantee them membership. We only have six positions available. So each expression of interest will be evaluated by the committee based on gender balance, possible participation and contribution to club activities, known friendships within the club etc.

The club is now back to full operating levels. All activities are now taking place. I am off to Bonville with twenty six other club members next week. Planning for the Kiama trip is well underway and activities such as movies, gardening group, bowling, theatre, cards, dining out etc are once again in the program.

I am looking forward to the coming year.

Welfare

Welfare Report May 2021

It has been great to see so many people back socializing, getting some exercise and participating in activities. The Bright trip saw over 50 of us enjoying each other’s company and experiencing the beauty of the area. There were a number of magnificent walks with scenery to match that kept us all busy. It was good to hear Colin has recovered from his shingles [ouch!].

I have been in contact with a number of members who have been through some testing times health wise but just get on with life. Their positive attitude is inspiring.

Happy 44th wedding anniversary to Santo and Sue Calabrese! Any other happy occasions, ie weddings, grandchildren etc let us know if you want to share the news!

If there is anyone you know who may need help, a phone call or helping hand, you can let either myself or Terry Ridge know.

May Meeting Speaker - David Elliot (NSW Police Minister& Member For Baulkham Hills) - My last 20 Years In Parliament & What I hope To Achieve In The next 10 Years

Picture
BIOGRAPHY OF DAVID ELLIOTT
The Honorable David Elliott MP was born in Bankstown in 1970 and was educated at
Christian Community High School, Regents Park before completing a Bachelor of Arts in
History and Asian Studies. He also holds a Graduate Certificate in Public Policy and
Master of Arts (Communication).

A keen interest in politics lead David to join the Liberal Party on his 16th birthday and
research roles on the personal staff of then Senator Bronwyn 'Bishop in her Parramatta
office before spending four years on the personal staff of the Hon John Howard OM AC.
In 1993 after graduating, he joined the NSW Police Media Unit and worked on a number
of high profile operations, including Task Force Air, which led to the arrest of notorious
backpacker murderer Ivan Milat.

In 1995 David joined the Regular Army and, following studies at the Royal Military
College, Duntroon, was commissioned into the Australian Army Public Relations
Service. He completed his Master's Degree on an Army part scholarship.
A long-time friendship with then NSW Opposition Leader, the Hon Peter Collins QC MP
saw David return to politics as his senior press secretary in 1997. Following the change
of leadership in the NSW Liberal Party in 1999, David was invited to be the National
Campaign Director of the "No Republic" campaign. Under his administration, David saw
a successful "No" vote in every State of the Commonwealth. For his services to the
referendum he was awarded the Commonwealth's Centenary Medal in 2001. In 1999 he
also completed his final Master's dissertation on the relationship between the Liberal
Party of Australia and the media.

January 2000 saw David recalled to the Australian Regular Army and posted to the
headquarters staff of the multinational peacekeeping forces in Bougainville, Papua New
Guinea, for which he was awarded the Australian Service Medal (Bougainville clasp).
He returned to Australia in June 2000 and opted for a career sabbatical with the
international charity, St John Ambulance, working as the Major Events Manager in
Australia and the Manchester Commonwealth Games, UK. At this time, he also
consulted to a number of politicians in Australia and New Zealand.

In January 2004 David joined the Australian Hotels Association and served as the NSW
Deputy Chief Executive until January 2008. He was responsible for tourism and
accommodation issues as well as being the Association's public affairs director. He was
awarded the Australian Defence Medal in April 2007 before resigning from the Australian
Army to concentrate on business interests. During his time at the AHA (NSW) David
served on a number of industry boards and committees including Hotel Employers
Mutual and The National Tourism Alliance.

In January 2008 David was made the Chief Executive Officer of the Civil Contractors
Federation (NSW) based at Norwest Business Park which employed 15 staff and
operated as a Registered Training Organisation servicing more than 500 businesses
ranging from publicly listed companies to small family concerns constructing
infrastructure across Australia.
David was a Director of Castle Hill RSL Group from 2009 to 2016 and served on the
Board of Life Education Australia (NSW) from January 2009 to December 2012. From
January 2006 to December 2007 he was a lay-member of the NSW Law Society
Professional Conduct Committee. In October 2009 David was also elected as a Member
of the Sydney Business Chamber Policy Committee. He lives in Kellyville and is married
to Nicole and they have two sons, Lachlan (16) and William (14). His interests include
travel, history, rugby, sailing and golf.

David was elected to the 55th Parliament as the Member for Baulkham Hills on 26th
March 2011 with a 16 per cent swing to the Liberal Party. In June 2011 he was also
elected as the Chairman of the NSW Economic Development Committee. In 2011 he
presided over the Inquiry into the NSW Parliamentary Budget Office. In May 2014 he
was promoted to Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier. He has also served as the
Chairman of Ministerial Consultative Council on India, Secretary of Parliamentary
Friends of Papua New Guinea and Chairman of the St John Ambulance Parliamentary
Auxiliary.

David was a member of the Australian Political Exchange Council's 21st delegation to
Japan in March 2013. He also represented the NSW Parliament in October 2013 at the
Global Conference on the Role of Parliaments and Extractive Industries in Vienna,
Austria.

Following the re-election of the Baird Government in March 2015, David was appointed
Minister for Corrections, Emergency Services and Veterans Affairs.

In August 2015 David was appointed as a Member in The Order of St John.

In early 2017, Premier Gladys Berejiklian appointed David to be Minister for Counter
Terrorism, replacing Emergency Services. He then became Minister for Counter Terrorism,
Corrections and Veterans Affairs. Following the 2019 state election, David was sworn in as the Minister for Police and Emergency Services in the second Berejiklian ministry.

Environmental Change Is Required For Disposable Coffee Cups

Our current disposable coffee/tea cups cost around 20 to 25 cents each.

They are NOT recyclable due to the plastic membrane that lines them and can take up to 30 years to degrade.
Our landfills are choking with the daily arrival of 2 million “disposable” cups per day.

France banned single use disposable in 2020, other countries are following this trend.  Coles & Woolworths both announced that they will stop selling single use plastic tableware, including cups by 1 July this year.

SOLUTION?
Buy yourselves a reusable coffee cup that shows that you’re “environmentally responsible” and form a habit of using them daily (keep in your bag or car), similar to the use of plastic reusable supermarket bags now.

Look in Target, Kmart or other similar stores and you will see there are a large range of reusable cups, especially the light insulated type that will keep your drink hot, or wine cold (use for white wine at wine & cheese nights).  They all have protective “no spill” lids.

BRING YOUR REUSABLE CUP TO OUR MONTHLY MEETINGS & RINSE IN THE SINK AFTER USE!

More April/May Reads – lots of murder mysteries this month:

All the Good Things
by Clare Fisher: Reviewed last NL, but left this reader with mixed feelings – can be confronting but very honest.

Buried
by Lynda La Plante: a crime mystery with a human side to it. DC Jack Warr isn’t perfect, the story involved strong women. Well-paced and intriguing to the end.

The Falls
by Ian Rankin: a murder mystery with historical background. A bit of a slow read, taking a long time to really get into it, but some interesting twists and turns.

The Flat Share
by Beth O’Leary: the cover has the intriguing line ‘Tiffy and Leon share a bed. Tiffy and Leon have never met’. Once you get over the whole hot-bedding idea its actually a ripping story. Although they have never met (Leon’s girlfriend interviewed Tiffy for the flat share!!) they develop a relationship via pads and pads of stick-it notes. He works night shifts, she words in the day. Her controlling ex, his wrongly accused imprisoned brother and a whole heap of other issues bring them together and apart throughout this very enjoyable and very different read.

The Cartographer’s Secret
by Tea Cooper: husband approved for long drives! One family, two stories, set 30 years apart. One in 1880 in the Hunter Valley and the other in 1911. Some facts about the explorer Ludwig Leichhardt interwoven through the two stories. Lettie has to discover the truth and face the family secret when she comes to the Hunter Valley property where her aunt went missing 30 years before. A terrific read and fascinating to note the differences in the world in that 30 year period.

The Suspect
by Fiona Barton: Two girls go to Thailand for a gap holiday. It should be the trip of a lifetime. It ends with their murder. A story told from different perspectives – the girls – the mothers, the reporter (also a mother) and the police.

Unsolved
by James Patterson: another husband long drive approval! Emma, an FBI data researcher is obsessed with finding a serial killer (she is a surviving victim of another serial killer). The killer is obsessed with finding her. She can’t convince the FBI of her suspicions so she’s ‘going rogue’. The multiple suspects’ stories and Emma herself being set up to be brought down fills you with suspense right to the end. Husband now wants to hear more from this author.

Hidden in Plain Sight
by Jeffrey Archer: Inspired by The Clifton Chronicles. Many twists involving the investigations by D.S William Warwick and the drug squad, as they set out to trap a criminal network like none they have every faced before..

The Scholar
By Dervla McTeirnan: a ‘who don it’ story set in and around Galway University pharmaceutical research facility. Starts with a hit and run victim. Wwho is she? Why is she carrying the ID of the heir apparent to Darcy Therapeutics? A murder investigation with unexpected twists.

Girt
by David Hunt:  a book club read. Unusual, with the writing presenting history in an amusing and satirical way. Worthy, but you felt you were always looking for something worthy to laugh at.

A Spool of Blue Thread
by Anne Tyler: Filled with the everyday and beautifully told. Abby Whitshank begins with how she met and fell in love with her husband. The lives of the four generations unfold around the house lovingly built by her father in law, Junior and in which she now lives with Red, her husband. Both beautiful and sad.

Next month we will continue riding around the Parramatta River precinct on Wednesday 2 June 2021, to avoid clashing with other planned club activities.

Parramatta Historical Walking Tour - Friday 26th March

This was an historical walking tour organised by our friend Ulrike Holmes from the Parramatta Heritage and Visitors Information Team. Fourteen of us turned up at the Parramatta Heritage and Visitor Information Centre at 10am for a very interesting tour of historical sites around Paramatta.

The tour entailed two hours of leisurely walking via Prince Alfred Square, St Patrick’s Cathedral and Bankwest Stadium to Parramatta Park. Within the park we stopped to see the bat colony (making sure we did not stand directly under them!), the outside area of the Dairy and Rangers’ Cottages and carried on with a guided walk up to the various monuments within the park, including the "flying dentist".

Kiama Trips Sun 10 - Wed 13 and Sun 17 - Wed 20 October 2021

As previously advised given the huge demand for this trip we have split the group into separate trips, being just after the school holidays.
Picture
Accommodation:
We have booked the “Park Ridge Retreat” Gerringong, just south of Kiama, providing circa 4 star accommodation) and is adjacent the local shops.

https://www.parkridgeretreat.com.au

Our room only “group booking” tariff is $465.00/room for three nights ($155.00/night). Room allocation is on the ground and middle floors.

Motel Meals:
  • Hot Breakfast (Bacon & eggs and other choices) at $15.00 per person, tea, coffee, and juice.
  • One Course Dinner at $25 per person, or 2 courses $35 choices of meals to be confirmed.

Motel payments
Everyone has now paid their $100 deposit, whilst the majority is refundable, there is a $300.00 non-refundable group booking charge. We will require the accommodation balance of $365.00 by the end of August.
All payments should be paid into the Activities Account and identified by your Surname & Kiama.

Evening Meals
We have made group bookings for both trips at the following:
  • Sunday; Gerringong Bowling Club, Pacific Ave, Werrs Beach (6.30pm)

  • Monday; Cronin’s Hotel, 29 Belinda Street, Gerringong (6.30pm)
Lynne and I dined here last year, very good bistro

  • Tuesday; Olive & Vine, 87 Manning Street, Kiama (7.30pm)
Highly recommended by one of our members

Note; links are to existing menus are not necessarily what will be available in October. Also due to our numbers we have a 7.30 booking and a set menu for Olive & Vine, two courses $40 or three $50. Send me an email if you require a copy of the menu.
We have made reservations assuming full attendance by our respective groups. Therefore can you please let me know by the end of August if you will not be attending any of these venues and I will adjust our reservations.

Activities
As usual we will endeavour to ensure this will be a very flexible trip, with how much or little you do entirely up to you. We will try for a major attraction each day, preferably morning.

This will generally provide “free time” after lunch for the various other attractions, all of which will undoubtedly have various levels of appeal. Thus we recommend you do some homework (at least check out some web sites etc.) to ascertain any individual preferences.

The hotel webpage includes a number of links to various local attractions.

https://www.parkridgeretreat.com.au/attractions.html

Costs
Except for the stated accommodation costs, it is best if all other costs, e.g. breakfasts, lunches, dinners and all activities are paid for separately, by the participants.

Other
Any suggestions or questions please give me a call.
Looking forward to both your company and a great trip.

Gardening

GARDENING GROUP - May
Our last Gardening Group outing was to ‘The Armoury’ at Silverwater.

The Armoury is a heritage listed site, with an interesting history in the protection in Australia as well as now having significant plantings to encourage habitat for local water life and wetlands habitat for local waterbird and animals.
As per our usual Gardening Group outing, we started the day with brunch, to boost our energy levels ready for our walk around the bay area.  Following morning tea we all took a walk around the board walks to see the historical areas as well as the wetland area plants.

Following our exploration of the local plants which included very old plantings, as well as recent update to help improve the habitat for the local bird life.

Following our walk we took the short drive (to the other side of Silverwater Road) to have a leisurely lunch at the Dooleys Waterview Club.

Please let Sue Small know if you’d like to be added to the Gardening Group email list to be kept updated on outings and activities.

Golf

Picture
Golf Report March 2021.

Hello everyone from the WPH&D Probus Inc - Golf Bunker (easy to get into, but sometimes hard to get out off).

Our members last month played at Bright Golf Course; the day started at about 5 degrees but warmed up as the day went on with clear skies and the fabulous scenery abound.
Thank you, the Ken Lewis, for organising a great day for those that played.

This month we played at Gordon Golf Course the weather was fine and sunny if a little fresh. The members that played are legends in the game you just have to ask them.
Although some members were absent due to injuries. All in all, it was a great day of bonding and applying the three “F’s” of Probus.

I should also mention Beverley Dona sunk a 35.75m put which was witnessed by three other Probus members. Well done, Bev, she may be considering giving Enio some of her fine points on putting.
This was followed up by a drink and food from the Bunker snack bar in the club house.

Our next game is to be confirmed due to some clubs having fewer social days available to use especially for our usual first Friday the month routine.

Lunch will be in the club house snack bar or restaurant if available
.
Our June game location is still to be confirmed, an email will be sent later shortly.

Yours in Fun, Fellowship & Friendship

Investment Group - MAY

Now that we can safely get together, it is time to see if we can get the Investment Group happening again. For those who attended the previous meetings, we regularly had ca. 12 participants and the meetings were held at my home.

What I am proposing, is we try to have an Investment Group meeting before the end of May. I have been looking at the Activities Calendars to see what days are free of competing activities, and providing I have interpreted the calendars correctly, Tuesday 25th May or Thursday 27th May are free days. Therefore, can you indicate if you have a preference for either day and we will go with the day on which the majority can attend. The meeting will commence at 10:00am and will be held at my home (address below). [David has sent out an email to all those that have expressed interest in the Investment Group & will notify all of which date the meeting will be held]

This first meeting of 2021 will be to establish a day in each month to hold the meetings and to develop a list of topics for discussion at future meetings. I will also be looking for members of the group to do presentations as I do not want to be the sole presenter. Also, with so many potential new members, there may be an opportunity to have presentations/discussions on some of the topics we have previously covered.

Since we have over 20 names on the email list, if the Investment Group proves to be popular, then we may have to consider a more suitable venue to hold the meetings as it may not be practical to hold the meeting at my home if we have more than 15 or so participants.

I look forward to seeing everyone for the first Investment Group meeting of 2021.

MOVIE GROUP - MAY

On our May Movie day we all decided to see ‘Six Minutes to Midnight’, which was based on real life scenario and had several of us, gasping, holding our breath, etc during some of the screens.  The movie was set in 1939, just prior to the commencement of world war 2, when influential German families had sent their daughters to a finishing school in an English Seaside town to learn the language and be ambassadors for a future looking Germany.

We then all enjoyed our long leisurely lunch at Cosmo Café.

Our next movie day will be on 8 June, at the Events Cinema in Castle Hill.
After watching the shorts before of upcoming movies, the majority vote for our June Movie Day was to see “June Again”.

Please let Sue Small know if you’d like to be added to the Movie group list to be kept updated on upcoming Movie Days

Photography

Picture
Probus Photography Group

With the large contingent of Probus photographers that went on the Bright trip, there was no photography group meeting in May.

The Facebook photography site now has two Bight Trip albums created; People & Places.

For those that don't have access to the Facebook site, separate web pages have also been created for People & Places, on a day by day basis, so that those that didn't go on the trip will have some idea of where the various photos were taken.

These pages contain additional photos from other members not in the Photography group, but who also went on the  Bright trip.

I had some difficulty determining where some of the photographs had been taken (and therefore date), but have attempted, as best as I can, to place them in the correct dates/places. If you would like any mis-allocated photos to be moved to the dates you know that you took them, please let me know (Andrew).

Also, if you went to any other places & took photos you have provided that I haven't listed by the date, please let me know and I will include these places.

I will eventually move these links to the "Information For Members" so that these photos can be accessed in the future.

Bright Trip Toilets
We visited a number of "quaint" alpine bush toilets, which were generally very clean and which had good views (if you were game to keep the door open....)

TEN PIN BOWLING REPORT - MARCH

We had hoped to recommence bowling on Friday 21 May.

Unfortunately, with a number of regular bowlers participating in the trip to
Bonville we failed to muster the numbers required to make it worthwhile.

Hopefully we can get the required amount of interest to restart on 18 June.

Theatre and Musicals

Live Theatre May 2021

We have now finalised our theatre party to “Come from Away” at the Capitol Theatre on Wednesday 9 June 2021 commencing at 7:00pm, with 34 attendees that evening attending, again thank-you for all your support!

All attendees will be emailed separately with travel arrangements for that evening

At our last meeting, we also put out an expression of interest to The Addams Family” presented by Sydney Youth Musical Theatre at Hornsby RSL Club, 7:30pm on Friday 9 July 2021 Tickets just $37.00.

So far we have 22 on this list with great seats reserved. We will then finalise after our next meeting and a follow up email to our extended contact list.

By way of background: “The Addams Family”, have lived by their unique values for hundreds of years; however, the family encounters an unforeseen obstacle when Wednesday, now eighteen years old, decides to introduce her new "normal" boyfriend, Lucas Beineke, to the family. Wednesday has found herself experiencing a surprising new sensation, one that frightens both her and her family: she has fallen in love. In protest, Uncle Fester enlists the help of the Addams' ancestors to call an end to the young budding romance. Morticia, Gomez, and Pugsley worry about her changing ways. As the Addams and the Beinekes come together for dinner one fateful evening, chaos ensues, and the two families find themselves admitting deep secrets and coming together in ways they never would have imagined.   The Addams family must face up to the one horrible thing they've managed to avoid for generations: change.

Guests of members are most welcome to attend and will be preceded by dinner at the club for those interested.

Also, “Hamilton” has commenced The Lyric from March 2021 and I will continue to look at pricing options on group bookings that are reasonable. Group Ticket Prices are currently at $185 each on ticketmaster.com.au. and after adding bus travel would be well over $200 each with transport. I will continue to monitor the situation with a view to making what is a great show more affordable, please remain patient and stay tuned.

Walking - May

Walking this month was a Sydney harbor walk between Rydalmere Wharf and the Parramatta wharf.  It is a lovely walk, past the Western Sydney University grounds and including the new extension next to the Parramatta wharf.  Most walkers did the return trip after a short break for coffee.

The next walk will be the second Tuesday of the month, which is the 8th June.   Please keep this date free and join in for the exercise.
