President's Report

President’s Report - March

Finally in February we were able to hold a monthly meeting in Cherrybrook Community Centre. Although numbers were restricted it was still nice to get together and listen to a guest speaker face to face. We are certainly planning to hold the March meeting in the same manner, only this time we will also include a full morning tea. (again, with restricted numbers).

Don’t forget that the March meeting is also our Annual General Meeting. So we will be electing office bearers for 2021, as well as reviewing the past year.

It has certainly been a very different year and I am hoping that the upcoming twelve months will allow us to socialise much more than we have of recent times. Already, many of the activities are ramping up.

The calendar is starting to fill. We have instigated a review of nominated activities of interest for each club member. By now you should have received an email from Enio asking you to update your areas of interest. This will allow us to make sure you are notified by activity leaders when one of your nominated activities is scheduled. It will also avoid the problem of receiving emails about activities that you are not interested in.
Please send this back to Enio as soon as possible.

I look forward to seeing most of you at the meeting on Wednesday 24th March

Welfare

Welfare Report March 2021

We are definitely getting back to seeing more of each other and the volume of noise at the get togethers speaks for itself!
I think now that the Covid vaccine is starting to be administered we are becoming a little less cautious although we still need to be sensible.

I was sad to hear of Lynne Henderson’s and Robin Bartle's mum passing away and had the privilege of being able to attend her mum’s memorial.  It was an uplifting occasion as many happy memories were shared. I was saddened to hear of Lorenza’s mother-in-law also passing away so would like to extend our club sympathies to her.

Will be thinking of Barb Tyas who needs an overnight stay in hospital for an operation. All the best Barb.

Have also heard that Helen Donnelly is making a slow recovery after hurting her back so also wish her well.
Jeanette and Ian Roberts are on a well deserved 2-week trip up north. Hope you enjoy the hot springs in Moree and look forward to seeing you back happy, healthy and well rested.

Wendy Carritt is just back from a week diving up around Cairns. She took some amazing underwater photos and came back on a high note after not being able to dive for a long time because of the covid restrictions.

Looking forward to seeing everyone that can make it to the AGM next week and catching up.

If you know of anyone that is not well, needs help or has some good news please let either Terry Ridge or myself know so that we can make contact if needed.

Environmental Change Is Required For Disposable Coffee Cups

Our current disposable coffee/tea cups cost around 20 to 25 cents each.

They are NOT recyclable due to the plastic membrane that lines them and can take up to 30 years to degrade.
Our landfills are choking with the daily arrival of 2 million “disposable” cups per day.

France banned single use disposable in 2020, other countries are following this trend.  Coles & Woolworths both announced that they will stop selling single use plastic tableware, including cups by 1 July this year.

SOLUTION?
Buy yourselves a reusable coffee cup that shows that you’re “environmentally responsible” and form a habit of using them daily (keep in your bag or car), similar to the use of plastic reusable supermarket bags now.

Look in Target, Kmart or other similar stores and you will see there are a large range of reusable cups, especially the light insulated type that will keep your drink hot, or wine cold (use for white wine at wine & cheese nights).  They all have protective “no spill” lids.

BRING YOUR REUSABLE CUP TO OUR MONTHLY MEETINGS & RINSE IN THE SINK AFTER USE!

Bright trip - 20 to 28 April 2021 - 4 Weeks To Go!

Picture
We have 57 confirmed travellers on this trip and the team who have put this together have been outstanding. I would like to thank the team that has worked through many of the issues faced over the past months to make this trip eventuate. Those members are Ian Roberts (finance), Ken Smith (accommodation and some meals), Ken Lewis (bright activities), Andrew Little (activities to Bright) and Max Henderson (transport).

Let us hope the weather is good to us as we have been drowned in Sydney. It can be very cold in Bright at this time of year, it often snows on Mount Buffalo in April so pack some warm clothing.

Everything is now planned, and a full briefing will be held at the Clarke’s residence at 7:30 on Thursday March 25.

Book Challenge

TIME FOR A NEW CHALLENGE:
SIT – READ – CHILL!
February brought another 15 books into the ‘Here Comes the Sun’ Challenge totalling 51 books in the end!
And we’ve signed up for another 50 in the ‘SIT – READ – CHILL’ Challenge, which will run from March to the end of August. We are already two books into this Challenge.
To be part of this challenge, just search Facebook for WPH&D Book Challenge and join us.

More February Reads:
The Good Turn by Dervla McTiernan – this was a cracker!!! So many twists and no mawkish love interests or gratuitous sex descriptions to get in the way of a really good story. An Irish Garda kills a suspected pedophile, who is driving straight at him. The ramifications are huge as three seemingly unrelated stories of drugs, power, fear and corruption brings you to a stunning close.

Into the Water by Paula Hawkins. Lots of characters, and the story moved between them in different years – you need to concentrate with this one. There are a number of deaths in a river and this story draws the links between them. Not very likeable characters.

Wake in Fright by Kenneth Cook – an outback horror story although not as horrific as expected. This was a Book Club read. Lots of despair and you’d wonder a lot about country people after reading it. It was often like a bad dream where you just wanted to wake up.

The Strange Case of the Moderate Extremists: by Alexander McCall Smith – Another of the Detective Varg stories. Brief, and with that weird Scandinavian humour. You have a bit of a smile at times, a chuckle here and there, but as the book was mostly the out loud musings of Ulf Varg, his overthinking gets a bit tedious. The ‘I’m Offended’ brigade don’t have much sway in this book.

In the Memorial Room:  by Janet Frame – a really weird book that took time to get into. A moderately successful writer gets a scholarship – a living memorial to a dead poet/author – to go to France to write his book. Once there, things are not all it seems. He becomes convinced that he is going blind despite the doctor telling him his eyes were perfect, then wakes up one morning totally deaf. Again, the doctor says his ears are fine. He is using these maladies to escape his real belief that he wasn’t much of a writer. Full of ex-pat English and New Zealanders who think it would be a wonderful life to uproot and go live in a small French village.

The Secrets She Keeps by Michael Robotham – a very enjoyable read that is also available as a mini-series. A psychological thriller about an unlikely friendship between two pregnant women that asks: how far would you go to create the perfect family. Well written and an interesting ending.

The Erratics by Vicki Laveau Harvie – reviewed in a previous newsletter.

And for the NEW CHALLENGE:
The Midnight Line: by Lee Child – Another of the Jack Reacher stories. He finds a class ring in a pawn shop, from West Point 2005 – a hard year to graduate – that sets his mind wondering. In trying to track down the owner, he finds that the ring is a small link in a far darker chain.

The Switch: by Beth O’Leary – Eileen, a 79-year old grandmother swaps places with Leana, her 20+ year old granddaughter, moving to London to live in Leana’s flat (with flatmates). She becomes quite a force to be reckoned with – and is funny to boot. She learns to not give a jot about what people think, and becomes a charming meddler, starts on-line dating, has an affair with a silver haired actor, and just starts making such a difference to everyone’s life. Back in the village, Leana starts to make a difference in the lives of her grandmother’s friends. Over eight weeks they both begin to find their true selves, and those around them also begin to look at themselves with far more satisfaction than they knew they needed. A charming novel with some feist!

Cycling Group: March 2021

Cycling on Wednesday 10th March 2021 with six members cycling two laps of the Bay Run incorporating Iron Cove, Henley Marine Drive, Drummoyne, Rodd Point and Five Dock. Highlight of the day was Lawrence Hookee’s new electric bike, making short work of any hills leaving all in his wake.

Next month we will resume riding around the Parramatta River precinct on Wednesday 7 April 2021 just after Easter, before heading to Bright with the rest of the club hoping to undertake some of the great cycling opportunities in that region.

This group has been growing steadily and new riders are always welcome, so come along and enjoy our next ride as always, mainly on dedicated cycle paths and of course our mandatory coffee break!!

Broken Bay Pearl Farm on Friday 26th February

On Friday 26th February, on a perfect day, twenty-five people went to the Broken Bay Pearl Farm at Mooney Mooney where some of the world’s most lustrous and rare Akoya pearls are grown. Here we experienced a two hour tour of the ‘Shellar Door’, a cruise out to the farm longlines on the scenic lower Hawkesbury River and an immersive pearl grading session inside the restricted-access Pearl Grading Room.

We learnt the story of Australian pearls from its ancient Indigenous beginnings through to the modern farming and grading techniques, all the way to the finished piece of unique pearl jewellery.

The tour was followed by lunch at The Oyster Shed next door. Fresh prawns and oysters, with a good wine, on the banks of the beautiful Hawkesbury River.

Dining Out

Dining Out – March 2021
We are all delighted that Dining out has now recommenced after 16 months absence.
37 of us attended Sedici Restaurant in Oakhill Village for a much needed night of socialising, conversation and friendship. The food was excellent as was the company despite a few issues with the numbers and billing.

The next dining out evening will be in May as many of us will be on the Bright trip in April. Emails will be sent detailing a date and restaurant.

Kiama Trips Sun 10 - Wed 13 and Sun 17 - Wed 20 October 2021

As previously advised
  • As with any of these trips our priority is to lock in our accommodation, currently essential with all the added demand created by Covid. After which we determine our preferences for attractions, wining and dining etc
  • Given the huge demand for this trip we have split the group into separate trips, being just after the school holidays

  1. Sunday 10 to Wednesday 13 October 2021
  2. Sunday 17 to Wednesday 20 October 2021
  • Our preference for these short trips is a maximum of about 20, as exceeding this number can provide logistical challenges.

Regardless, our combined group is 56 and to avoid disappointment we have increased our group numbers to 27 and 29 respectively.

In providing these two groups we have had regard to all advised preferences, as to who some members preferred to be group with, resulting in.

Accommodation:
We have booked the “Park Ridge Retreat” Gerringong,  just south of Kiama,  providing circa 4 star accommodation at competitive rates (due to increased demand, motel rates have increased significantly in recent months) and is adjacent the local shops                https://www.parkridgeretreat.com.au

Our room only “group booking” tariff is $465.00/room for three nights ($155.00/night). Room allocation is on the ground and middle floors.

Motel Meals:
  • Hot Breakfast (Bacon & eggs and other choices) at $15.00 per person, tea, coffee, and juice.
  • One Course Dinner at $25 per person, or 2 courses $35 choices of meals to be confirmed.

Motel undertaking:
We have a pride in our product. The quality of our accommodation and food is of a high standard. We will help the group with their bags on arrival and departure.

Motel payments
We (your Probus club) require a $100 deposit /room, whilst the majority is refundable, provided we advise the hotel well in advance, please me let me know prior to the end of August. Note; there is a $300.00 non-refundable group booking charge. Thank you to everyone who have paid their deposit.
We will require the accommodation balance of $365.00 by the end of August.
All payments should be paid into the Activities Account and identified by your Surname & Kiama.

Activities
As usual we will endeavour to ensure this will be a very flexible trip, with how much or little you do entirely up to you. We will try for a major attraction each day, preferably morning.
This will generally provide “free time” after lunch for the various other attractions, all of which will undoubtedly have various levels of appeal. Thus we recommend you do some homework (at least check out some web sites etc) to ascertain any individual preferences.
The hotel webpage includes a number of links to various local attractions.

Costs
Except for the stated accommodation costs, it is best if all other costs, e.g. breakfasts, lunches, dinners and all activities are paid for separately, by the participants.

Other
Any suggestions or questions please give me a call.
Looking forward to both your company and a great trip.

Gardening

GARDENING GROUP - March

Due to the weather forecast predicting a 100% chance of rain (which didn’t happen!!!) on our scheduled outing day to the Botanical Gardens to see the new Calyx exhibition, we postponed the visit and will reorganise the outing in a few months.

To save us gardeners sitting at home on the day thinking of all the garden projects we should be working on, we met at Beanmeister Café for a nice brunch and good catch up.
Our April Gardening day will be on Thursday 8 April and we’ll be visiting the:
The Auburn Botanical Gardens: (also know as the Japanese Gardens):  the gardens were established in 1977 and cover 9.7 hectares. There’s two lakes, a waterfall, bridges and Duck River winds through the gardens.

As with most of our Gardening Group outings, we’ll start with coffee / brunch (location yet to be determined).  Following our ‘heart starter’ coffees, we’ll drive to the gardens for a leisurely stroll around the very picturesque settings.  Hopefully, we’ll be able to organise a guided tour by one of the staff who can explain the significance of the plant placement (which is very important in Japanese Gardens).

Following our morning at the Gardens, we’ll have lunch at ‘Dooleys Waterview Club’ (Silverwater)  before heading home.
Please let Sue Small know if you’d like to be added to the Gardening Group email list to be kept updated on outings and activities.

The Bunker News
by Editor

Hello everyone from the WPH&D Probus Inc - Golf Bunker (easy to get into, but sometimes hard to get out off).

Our members this month played at Muirfield Golf Course the weather was average with a light rain towards to end of the game. The members that played are true to the game with Cliff Graham coming in on par yet again (due to covid each player marks their own card???). He so consistent a true legend to some of use. Some members were absent due to injuries and some or one that I know of lost quite a few balls on the day, but all in all it was a great day of bonding and applying the three “F’s” of Probus.

This was followed up by a drink and food from the snack menu in the club house.

Our next game is at North Ryde Golf Course on Friday the 9th of April, our usual first Friday this month is Good Friday and considered that members will spend the day with family.
Lunch will be in the club house snack bar or restaurant if available.
Our April game location is confirmed at North Ryde with an email to be sent later this week.

This is the editor signing off from the sandy hole (Bunker).

Yours in Fun, Fellowship & Friendship

MOVIE GROUP - MARCH

It was very exciting for us movie goers to at last have a selection of movies to choose from when we went to the cinema for our March Movie day. Due to the good selection of movies all starting at approximately the same time (eg: The Dry, The Little Things, Love, Weddings and other Disasters, Penguin Bloom, The Little Things, etc), we were able chose our preferred movie/s to watch.

Following the movies we all enjoyed a very l-o-n-g overdue catch up while we enjoyed lunch at Cosmo Café.

Our next Movie Day will be on 6 April at the Events Cinemas in Castle Towers.  Unfortunately, movie options for April are not yet available.

Please let Sue Small know if you like to be added to the Movie Group email list to be kept updated on movie days and options.

Photography

Probus Photography Group

Our photography group is now getting back to normal with meetings and excursions. In my absence Bain has been holding the reigns (thank you Bain) and two executions were held during the month, primarily around street photography (photos of people) and architecture. The group also looked at still life photography and there are some interesting photos in the folder.
If you would like to know more about photography and how to improve your skills come along to a meeting, time is set aside for leaning a technical aspect of photography. The next meeting will include an introduction to post production of photos, this is where an ordinary photo can look great after processing.

Facebook Site
Our Facebook site shows members images and there are references to a wide variety of learning videos and articles that can be looked back on for reference.
The Facebook site is located at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/254025278937219/?ref=group_header
If you would like to see the Facebook site, please put a request in from your Facebook page to join the group. If you are a member of our Probus club you will be granted access, you don’t need to join the photography meetings. There are currently 29 members who access the Facebook site which is about a quarter of the club’s membership.

Bright Photography Excursions
The Bright trip throws up the opportunity to some great Australian Landscape images and some street photography whilst in Bright. If you are coming to Bright look out for these events but be warned, best landscape photographs are at dawn which means leaving in the dark in the early hours of the morning.

Theatre and Musicals

Picture
Live Theatre March 2021

At our next meeting we will be putting out two expressions of interest forms:

  •  “Come from Away” is based on actual events that took place on September 11, 2001 and the days that followed. The Tony® and Olivier Award winning musical tells the remarkable true story of thousands of stranded passengers and the small town in Newfoundland, Canada that welcomed them all.  Cultures clashed and nerves ran high, but uneasiness turned into trust, music soared into the night, and gratitude grew into enduring friendships. Commencing at the Capitol Theatre in June, including return coach travel, tickets are expected to be around $100 each.

  • “The Addams Family” presented by Sydney Youth Musical Theatre at Hornsby RSL Club, 7:30pm on Friday 9 July 2021 Tickets $37.00. The Addams Family, have lived by their unique values for hundreds of years; however, the family encounters an unforeseen obstacle when Wednesday, now eighteen years old, decides to introduce her new "normal" boyfriend, Lucas Beineke, to the family. Wednesday has found herself experiencing a surprising new sensation, one that frightens both her and her family: she has fallen in love. In protest, Uncle Fester enlists the help of the Addams' ancestors to call an end to the young budding romance. Morticia, Gomez, and Pugsley worry about her changing ways. As the Addams and the Beinekes come together for dinner one fateful evening, chaos ensues, and the two families find themselves admitting deep secrets and coming together in ways they never would have imagined.   The Addams family must face up to the one horrible thing they've managed to avoid for generations: change.  Guests welcome

Also, Hamilton will be commencing at The Lyric from March 2021 and I will look at pricing options on group bookings that are reasonable. Ticket Prices are subject to change but currently range between $135 to $250 AUD (not including venue packages) on ticketmaster.com.au. So please stay tuned!!

Wine and Cheese - March

Wine and Cheese was held on Friday 12th March at the home of Susan and David Antonjuk. 28 club members attended on what turned out to be a very balmy evening.

Thankfully, Susan provided some cheese to share along with the wine, to make truly a “Wine and Cheese” evening, as recently, everyone is becoming more adventurous in the food they bring.

Most of the guests ventured out onto our balcony where many a conversation was heard. Later in the evening some rain dampened the frivolities a little, but overall everyone had a very enjoyable evening.

The next Wine and Cheese will be held at the home of Marilyn and John Savic on Friday 9th April. We look forward to seeing everyone there.
