President's Report
President’s Report for October
Once again there is not a lot to report. The club continues to function with many of the outdoor activities continuing. However, I know that we all miss the opportunity to get together as a large group and enjoy the social interaction that Probus provides. I am hoping that we can arrange something for our Christmas function, so keep your eye out for developments in this area.
Two groups of members did travel to Bateman’s Bay for three days over the last two weeks. Whilst it was not a Probus function we were still able to gather in small groups and have a wonderful time. All of the arrangements and suggestions that Max Henderson and his helpers put together were not wasted. Mogo Zoo and the River cruise were well attended, and we did our best to inject some much needed cash into the local economy and restaurant scene.
I hope that all members are keeping well and that we soon see some further reduction in the restrictions that we are currently living under.

Welfare Report October 2020
Another month has rolled over and it has been heartening to hear from and see members who are recovering well from injuries or operations. Some are still struggling with health issues and it is great to know that as a group we are keeping in contact with each other and letting them know that even if we don’t see them we are still thinking of them. Many of us are taking the opportunity to participate in the activities the club have been able to keep going over these past few months, cycling, bushwalking, golf, book club and challenge, tennis and gardening to name a few have all enabled us to keep in contact and keep active mentally and physically! You realise how important this is when you have been deprived!
Some members recently went to Batemans Bay over a 2 week period and had a wonderful time. It was good to support the regional areas we visited. It was clear from looking at the town and surrounding areas how badly these people were affected, no power for weeks, the stench of smoke, no homes for some and badly damaged for others, limited food available, no mobile reception, no shops open….a terrible situation. There is a lot of regrowth in the forests but this will take years to recover. This trip helped us all to reconnect as a group.

Batemans Bay Trip Group A
This is for those of us who went down to Batemans Bay & never saw ANY whales, despite going out on the whale watch boat.
Bob & Bev saw a number of whales from the cliff top at Burrewarra Point lookout near Guerilla Bay & the photos of whales below were taken by Bob.
Despite the fact that a number of us also went out to the cliff top near the lookout we were not lucky enough to spot any whales.......

Batemans Bay Trip Group B
Eighteen of us gathered in Bateman’s Bay for the second week of the Non-Probus trip. The weather was perfect and the accommodation at Mariner’s Hotel was magnificently located on the waterfront in the middle of the main retail strip. We were able to use the lawn area on the waterfront side of the hotel for our afternoon gatherings of wine, cheese and snacks. All of us ate the first night at the Soldiers Club and found the food to be good (except for Chris and Gary whose food never arrived).
The second day we visited Mogo Zoo, which is a smaller, visitor friendly attraction with a good variety of animals. Sue Hackett and Helen Baptiste fed the giraffes, and Helen was particularly amazed by the size of the male meerkat’s tail. That night we ate at the local Thai restaurant, which proved so popular that eight of us returned the following evening. Most of us had Lunch at the Oyster Shed where they served magnificent oysters (Pacific or Sydney Rock) at very reasonable prices, as well as fresh prawns. Barry Wailes discovered this place and enjoyed it so much that he and Helen ate lunch there every day.
On the third day we split up, with some of us taking the River Cruise and others travelling to Narooma. Unfortunately the Montague Island trip was cancelled due to weather. Some of us took the river cruise, which was very relaxing and included an excellent lunch of fresh fish and chips. Ten of the group chose to eat at an Indian restaurant that evening, and by all accounts it was very good.
Overall it was a very relaxing and enjoyable trip. Thank you to Max and his team for all their work. We all took advantage of your recommendations and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

&D PROBUS BOOK CHALLENGE
📚 Here Comes the Sun Challenge📚
This Challenge will run from September to February next year.
Just search Facebook for WPH&D Book Challenge to join us. Many of this month’s books were read on the recommendations of other members of the group, and they didn’t fail to entertain.
Our reads since last month:
The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris – a Book Club read and reviewed in last newsletter.
The Full Cupboard of Life by Alexander McCall Smith – from the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. Quirky, great characters, and of course everything can be solved over a cup of Bush Tea.
Two Days Gone by Randall Silvis – this was quite a good read – an entire family murdered (wife, 3 children including baby) and the novelist husband on the run not knowing if he’s living out a book or if he’s in real life. The detective, with his own sad story, doggedly unlocks the real story with some deep insights, strip clubs, poetry and some really nasty people along the way. The events are presented from the minds of both the detective and the novelist. Riveting.
The Nowhere Child by Christian White – full of intrigue, abduction, religious snake handling fanatics – so hard to put down.
Blue Moon by Lee Child – this writer is very popular –his name appears in many reading book groups. Keeping you intrigued right to the end, Blue Moon is about a chance meeting on a bus and where it leads to, and shows how people, with the best intentions, can get pulled into situations out of their control. Jack Reacher has to utilise his instincts to solve this one.
Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel – this is the first book of the Wolf Hall Trilogy, set in the times of Henry VIII, with all the court intrigues and skull-duggery that go on all in the name of privilege and greed. Those Tudors and their hangers-ons really have a lot to answer! Need to read something light before going to the next in the series.
The Wife and the Widow by Christian White – another recommended read with an interesting twist at the end. Reviewed in earlier newsletter.
So many books – so little time – but we’ll get there – NEVER!

Book Club - October 2020 Report
Our last Zoom meeting was on 1st October where we discussed The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris, which had mixed reviews.
Our current book is Gogo Mama by Sally Sara which is a journey of discovery into the lives of twelve African women with very different stories. The women are from all over the country.
Our next meeting is on 26th November and may actually be in person, depending on the situation at the time. Here’s hoping.
Happy reading

Cards Report
A couple of suggestions……
500 Trickster is a great website you can use to play 500.
You can play with friends or you can play against the computer and improve your skills!
Hearts classic card game is another website you can go to. Playing against the computer as a beginner, average player or a Pro all help in honing your card skills.
Beware though, they can be addictive and before you know it an hour or 2 has slipped by!!

Historic Tour of Windsor 30th September
After cancellations and changes we eventually managed to organize an historical tour of Windsor attended by 22 members. It was great to be out in the sunshine and mixing with friends. Windsor is one of the five Macquarie towns established in 1810 and it soon became apparent that we would only touch on the town’s vast history. Aboriginal people had occupied this area of the Hawkesbury River for at least 40 000 years and over 14 000 Aboriginal artefacts have been discovered in the area. We were able to visit the Hawkesbury Regional Museum, The Thompson Square Precinct and the Peninsula Precinct.
Our guide, Carol, would like to thank Joan and Gordon for helping her when she felt faint and I would like to thank everyone for being so cooperative when we lost one of our guides!
I am trying to organize a November trip and should be able to let you know dates and times at our next meeting.

Garden Group
Needless to say visiting any new venues is still limited by the situation we find ourselves. However, a number of us did venture forth on Thursday 8 October to the Cumberland State Forest and enjoyed the fresh air, the nursery, and for some, a walk down some of the tracks within the forest.
The opportunity to catch up within the health requirements of social distancing was much appreciated and good medicine for the soul. Some members then enjoyed a light lunch at the West Pennant Hills Sport Club.
Our meeting on Thursday 12 November is still being organized. Those on the Garden list will be informed via email. If you wish to be added to the group, please contact Sue Small or Lorenza Powyer.

Golf Report October 2020.
Bunker News
by Editor “Open the Face” and the assistant editor “Do not Ground the Club”.
Hello again from the WPH&D Probus Golf Bunker (a very sandy area).
Well from what I heard everyone had a great time at North Ryde the editor was unable to attend due to kitchen renovations needing his attention, all be it that Covid distancing was taken to the extreme. Neither groups of the 18-hole and or the 9-hole players were able to link up for lunch as the course was extremely busy.
I will attempt to rectify this at our next event. “Read below to find out our next course of action (golf and eating)”.
As I have mentioned in a previous edition of this article (now called the Bunker News)
The usual Friday play has changed at most of our normal haunts.
I again called Asquith and they were busy for Nov 6th and could get some of us on at 6:30am but not at 10:00 am. I then called Carnarvon Golf Club and received a similar response. Muirfield has a comp on from 7:00am till 10:00am, and we played at North Ryde last week.
So, the editor contacted Gordon Golf Course and made bookings for 8 players 18 holes 8:00am and 8 players 10:00am 9 holes. Please advise me of your intention to play so I can confirm numbers and if possible, increase our booking to play and book for lunch. I will send the menu out with the golfers’ email.
Our next game will be at Gordon 6th November 2020. 2 Lynn Ridge Ave Gordon NSW the booking is under my WPH&D Probus (Terry Ridge). I will forward the start sheet in the days prior to play for confirmation.
From the sandy hollow.
This OTF & DGTC signing off.
Yours in Fun, Fellowship & Friendship

Events Cinemas Castle Hill have just recently re-opened and so we hope to be able to safely enjoy a movie soon. We will email those on the Movie list regarding our attendance to what may be available prior to Tuesday 3 November. Depending on the numbers we will then continue to share a snack either at a local eatery or the RSL club Castle Hill.

Probus Photography Group
The photography group has been highly active and now has 25 members. The photos that we are seeing from everyone in the group are of an extremely high standard and many of the photos are taken with an I-Phone or android.
The photography group meets fortnightly through Zoom or substitutes a meeting for an outing. At our meetings we talk about one aspect of photography, over the past month we have been talking about the different types of light and flash photography which is transmitted light.
Photographic Exercise Between Meetings
Between each meeting we have a photographic project that attempts to build the skills in what we have discussed.
The exercise for the last month was an I-Phone/Android, pop up flash workshop with 14 people attending at Rob & Rosemary's place. This started with a refresh on the exposure triangle, the limitations of the camera app that comes with your phones and the benefit of the slow shutter cam app called “Slow Shutter Cam”. This is a critical app for using the flash with your phones. Many Iphone/Android phone users have now downloaded this app.
After this exercise we had a "social" meal where everyone brought their own "everything", which was very enjoyable.
Whilst some of the I-Phone/Android users continued their social activity, the DSLR camera users & some of the I-Phone/Android users moved to another area to do a number of different exercises using speedlights and studio lighting. This included off camera flash, light boxes plus much more. We had two "volunteer" models (Bob & Bev) who were were the subjects for the flash portraits (see photos below).
The group normally uses the face book site to vote on the best photo to be the banner for the Facebook site until the next meeting. However for this meeting, there was no "best" photo for this month.
