Presidents Report – June

It’s nice to see some of the restrictions being eased allowing us to restart some of our activities, albeit in modified formats. Everyone seems to have accepted Zoom as an acceptable means of communication, and at least for the next couple of months we will most likely have to continue our meetings utilising this format. The council did approach us to say that we could once again use Cherrybrook Community Centre, but the restrictions imposed onerous cleaning requirements and would only allow us to have 34 members in attendance. So we quickly dismissed that idea.

The photography group, Book Club, Book Challenge, Tennis and Walking have all continued or restarted recently. In the next few weeks Golf and Cycling will restart, and Helen has arranged a day trip to Windsor. So it is great to see some of our members getting together again. Many thanks go to the activity leaders for running these programs. Let’s restart the remainder of activities whenever possible in order to further provide the social gatherings that we all enjoy so much.

The Committee has been very quiet with no need to get together. With no real issues to address, we are enjoying a relatively easy time.  We have such a positive group of members that I am certain our time as committee members will always be enjoyable.

Welfare Report June 2020

As the Covid restrictions are being eased a little we are starting to get out and about more. Let off the leash and some freedom at last!!!
It was so good to see many members at the walk recently at Heritage Park. I believe there were over 40 members there and all having a wonderful catchup and getting some exercise to boot! I think many of us felt energized but also socializing again gave us a sense of connecting with each other, leaving with those “feel good” endorphins.

It was great to see Marilyn arrive walking slowly after her recent knee replacement. Slowly but surely, she and John will be back to their walking soon. Congratulations to Gail and Paul Day on the birth of a grandson Banjo. 3 weeks ago David and I were grandparents to another granddaughter Amelia.

I know many of us are walking with friends and some have ventured back to the gym. The golfers are staying active out on the course and the photographers are going out on excursions.  Helen has started organizing day trips again. It’s good to get out, see your friends, keep the mind and body active!

Glad to hear that Jeanette’s removal of a melanoma on her arm was successful.

Hilda will finally be having some surgery on Monday which had been postponed because of Covid. Hilda, all the best and will be thinking of you.

Anyone who knows a member who may need our support or has some news they want to share, please let either myself or Terry Ridge know.

JENNIFER PHILPS BSc. Hons, Dip Ed

Community Relations Manager

CHILDREN’S MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE

Jennifer started a teaching career in Glasgow in 1965 after majoring in genetics at Glasgow University.

After her marriage, to a veterinarian, Jennifer and her husband set off to Uganda on the Overseas Development Program where she taught in a remote village on the Sudan border. These were turbulent times in Uganda, so they ventured into the safer climate of South Africa where they stayed for 20 years raising three daughters. Jennifer taught in many parts of South Africa and immigrated to Australia in 1987 and continued her teaching career at Barker College.

In 1992, she had a sea change, leaving teaching to join a bio-medical company which fortuitously led her, a year later, to join Children’s Medical Research Institute as Community Relations Manager. The intention was to continue for a few years but 25 years later she still has “the best job in the world” giving her the ability to renew her avid interest in genetics and medical research.

An added bonus was to assist in the fantastic work carried out by our fund-raising committees as well as being involved with the Jeans for Genes Campaign since its inception.

Her talk today will cover the most recent and exciting research achieved at the Children’s Medical Research Institute

Book Challenge

WPH&D PROBUS BOOK CHALLENGE

🤷 STILL WAITING? WE’RE WAITING FOR YOU TOO! 📚

The Curl Up and Read Challenge continues – a little bit less in variety than other months as most of us had the Book Club choice to get through, but still some interesting books read – 26 in total now since the beginning of March.

The Crossing by Michael Connelly –reviewed in last month’s newsletter.

When it all went to custard by Danielle Hawkins – cheating husband thrown out – bereft wife thinks she can carry on with the farm and work in town and bring up the kids – husband proves he really is a ……… enter the new man. An enjoyable story but didn’t quite live up to the title.

Khaki Town by Judy Nunn – war time in Queensland about the interaction between the mainly black American contingent, the white officers and the locals of the town. A good story in the end but took a while to get there.

Spirit of the Ghan by Judy Nunn – a story of the outback set in the past and present about the interaction between indigenous, new settlers and the present day. The back and forth was sometimes a bit confusing but it was so much better than Khaki Town.

The Overlook by Michael Connelly – This author has proved popular with many of the book club members. Some really like their murdersJ Look very carefully at your fellow Probusees…….

The Dollmaker by Richard Monanari – as the cover says: Genius. Charmer. Psychopath!

There’s still time to join up. If you’re already reading, then just join and put ‘em up on the Facebook page. Don’t forget the Audio books – free from the library if you’re a member there. Great while you’re doing the mundane.

The Facebook page is a closed group, so only members can see the posts.
If you wish to join in via email only, then that is also possible. Just let me know. Search for WPH&D Probus Book Challenge and ask to join. (No gaps in the WPH&D part when you type)

Hardcopy, ebook, audio book, fiction or non-fiction, substantial children’s books all allowed.

Book Club - June 2020 Report

We held our online meeting on Thurs 11th June to discuss Spirits of the Ghan by Judy Nunn.  For some of us it was the first book we had read by this author but it was a good read that we all enjoyed.

Libraries have now reopened, so we were able to get the next book kit from them.  We are now reading Our Souls At Night by Kent Haruf.

Even though restrictions are easing we will still hold the next meeting via zoom on 9th July.

Happy reading

A couple of suggestions……

500 Trickster is a great website you can use to play 500.

You can play with friends or you can play against the computer and improve your skills!
Hearts classic card game is another website you can go to. Playing against the computer as a beginner, average player or a Pro all help in honing your card skills.

Beware though, they can be addictive and before you know it an hour or 2 has slipped by!!

Batemans Bay Trip, Monday 19 to Thursday 22 October 2020

We now have now received deposits for 30 rooms from 58 people.

Rooms
Except for a few Standard rooms (similar to the Superior/Executive rooms, minus the water views) we have now booked all the available rooms in the hotel. If you would still like to join us, best be quick…

Our hotel is Mariners on the Waterfront
                https://www.marinerswaterfront.com.au/

Located on the waterfront in Batemans Bay CBD and just a 2-minute walk from a choice of restaurants and shopping.
The relaxed 3.5-4.0 star air conditioned rooms offer free Wi-Fi, TVs, mini-fridges, tea and coffee-making facilities. Most rooms have balconies overlooking the Clyde River. Some rooms have sitting areas, while upgraded rooms have hot tubs.
The swimming pool is located on the hotel’s lawn, which is directly on the waterfront. The bistro offers fresh seafood and Australian/Asian cuisine and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Both cooked and continental breakfasts are available from 07:00-10:00 every morning. The lounge bar offers a relaxing place to enjoy a drink and a meal with friends or family. Fresh local Clyde River oysters are available.

With dinner requirements they can offer a 2 course alternate drop menu, with your choice of entree/main or main/dessert for $30-$35pp or order individually from the Bistro menu. They are also happy to look after any dietary requirements.

Hotel payments
The $100 deposit is refundable with no cancellation fees, provided we advise the hotel before 10 October.
Prior to reserving a room we require confirmation from Ian Roberts your deposit has been paid.
We will require the accommodation balance by the end of September.

All payments should be paid into the Activities Account and identified by your Surname & Mogo.
Whilst I’m only too happy to book additional rooms, this will be subject to both a $100 deposit and availability. If necessary I’m also happy to prepare a waiting list.

Please email me for all reservations, include:
  • Number of people and names
  • Room preference (Standard only)
  • Twin share or double room
  • Number of nights (if other than the three specified dates are required).
Priority was/is based on the date and time I received your email.

Car Pooling
To provide some social opportunities and reduce the number of cars, carpooling is a preferred option, particularly for our local trips on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Activities
Given this is a self-drive trip and the size of our group, we will need to break into smaller groups for most activities.
I acknowledged receipt of every request for a room via return email, inclusive of a priority number (as above) so we can readily break into two groups by simply adopting the “odd” or “even” number you were allocated.
This will allow say the “odds” on Tuesday and the “evens” on Wednesday to do the same activities and vice versa.
This doesn’t necessitate we will have to tour as two groups, potentially just the major attractions (e.g. Mogo Zoo, a river cruise and/or whale watching) and/or thereafter into smaller groups, whatever appeals to you “at your leisure”.
The focus of our visit is on the fantastic 80km section from Batemans Bay to Narooma, including the townships of Tomakin, Broulee, Mogo, Moruya, Tuross Head, Bodalla and Tilba Tilba. Our current draft itinerary is:

  • Monday, enjoy a leisurely drive (about four hour driving time) scenic 320km drive to Batemans Bay, one option is via the Southern Highlands and Kangaroo Valley. Another is via Goulburn and Braidwood.
  • Tuesday (or Wednesday), visit the amazing Mogo Zoo https://mogozoo.com.au/ and the historic gold rush village of Mogo (lunch option), both of which are within a 30 minute round trip of Bateman’s Bay.

Then maybe a leisurely boat cruise along the Clyde River (Bateman’s Bay) or sightseeing along the coast from Mogo back to Batemans Bay.
  • Wednesday (or Tuesday), road trip encompassing the various townships and attractions south of Batemans Bay to Narooma.

If you stay on the highway Narooma is about a fifty minute drive (70km) prior to adding the option of a couple of scenic coastal roads, a) Batemans Bay to Moruya (suggest one for the return trip) and b) leave the highway just north of Narooma and follow the scenic drive to the villages of Kianga and Dalmeny.

Bodalla (south of Moruya) includes the 1880s All Saints church, a coffee shop and a fabulous bakery.
Narooma has numerous attractions including the waterside boardwalks (breakwalls), Montague Island, various whale watching cruises (we are there during peak season), “Lynch’s Hotel” and “The view - coffee & bites” café both provide a $M view are great lunch options, Visitors Centre-Museum of Lighthouse and fresh oysters (just before and on the northern side of the bridge).

Time permitting the Heritage Listed village of Tilba Tilba is a further twenty minutes south (20km) of Narooma and includes a great bakery, leather goods, woodworks, antiques, cafes and a cheese factory.

  • Thursday, return home via for example Huskisson (lunch at the pub) and Berry (all those craft shops). Alternatively make this the beginning on a longer holiday and travel further down the coast.

Evening Meals
Whilst still undertaking a thorough review (suggestions?), initial thoughts are:
Monday, “welcome evening” the hotel has a meeting room that can accommodate 100 people (pre Covid) and considering a Wine & Cheese/ Pizza Night with our very own resident DJ.
Tuesday, we may have to break into smaller groups.
Wednesday, “farewell dinner” the hotel has a great bistro that can readily accommodate our group.

Costs
Whilst this may require amendment for say the “welcome night” and whale watching cruises. Except for the stated accommodation costs, it is best if all other costs, e.g. breakfasts, lunches, dinners and all activities are paid for separately by the participants.

Current indicative costs for Mogo Zoo are $34.00 ($29.00 concession) admission for adults and for whale watching $70.00pp for a 2.5 to 3.0 hour cruise (currently not operating due to Covid restrictions).

Other
We will continue to elaborate each month with regard to:
  • any suggestions for attractions and dining options, plus
  • we have a better understanding of the impact of both the bushfires and the Covid-19 restrictions.
Any suggestions or questions please give me a call.

Looking forward to both your company and a great trip.

Unfortunately, Bunnings aren’t able to confirm if / when their Gardening Sessions will recommence.  While we’re waiting for the reopening so we can pick up again on these info help info sessions, we’ll be checking with ‘Eden Gardens’ to confirm they are open and will organise an outing to browse around the extensive nursery, then take a short drive to the North Ryde RSL for lunch.

A detailed email will be sent to the Garden Group in the next few days.  Please let Sue know if you’d like to be included in the email.

Golf Group June 2020
Hello again from the WPH&D Probus Golf Bunker (my study).
I have received requests over the last few weeks but more so over the last few days about restarting the golf group.

I contacted our four main golf clubs about making a booking for July 3rd. The result was that three out of the four were unable to accommodate use with a long enough lead time (3 or 4 Weeks for members to decide if they would play or not) this primarily to suit COVID-19 restrictions and changes that may and may not happen making it difficult for groups such ours to make bookings in advance. One club however will take a booking so long as we can confirm actual numbers players.

Today 18/06/20 I sent out an email to all registered (those on the email list) players requesting confirmation as to whether each member will be playing golf on the first Friday of each month for the next six months. I also ask that those members that cannot not or will not able to play. Sending out unwanted emails is unnecessary. So, I can plan ahead and meet the expectations of each course your responses are requested and will be appreciated. Most courses were eager to please but were restricted by outside influences.

I thank those that have responded to email dated 18/06/20 and encourage those that have not, to do so, ASAP.
Last minute requests MAY NOT be possible to accommodate. I cannot control if a member must cancel due to unforeseen circumstances. You are not alone regarding unforeseen issues occurring.

For those members that may have difficulty getting to and from a game please let me know and I will do my best to arrange pickup and drop off as we are hear for each other.

North Ryde Golf Course is our next planned outing Friday 03rd July 2020. 8:00 – 8:30 Start for 18 holes and 10:00 – 10:30 for those wishing to play 9 holes. Carts will be booked for two players BUT may change as per COVID-19 rules etc. Lunch will be advised as the date gets closer.

Yours in Fun, Fellowship & Friendship

Probus Photography Group

The photography group meets fortnightly through Zoom and outings have stated in small groups.
There is also a Facebook site where members can post photos that are judged by the members.

The Facebook site is located at: https://www.facebook.com/groups/254025278937219/?ref=group_header

If you would like to see the Facebook site, please put a request in from your Facebook page to join the group. If you are a member of our Probus club you will be granted access, you don’t need to join the photography meetings.

Every two weeks we have a photographic theme for the group and members can submit up to 3 photos to an album on the Facebook site. During our Zoom meetings we discuss each photo so that we all learn how to take better photographs. The best photo is voted on by the group and it becomes the banner on the Facebook site for the next two weeks. Over the last two weeks the group took photos of structures. Congratulations to Peter Stanton for this outstanding structure image which is now our banner photograph on the Facebook site.

Picture
During the month we had sunset excursion to the Greystanes Aqueduct on Wednesday June 3. This brick aqueduct was built for moving water from the Prospect Reservoir to Sydney, it is now a walkway / cycleway. The brick arches make it a great photographic subject. Three photos were judged as equal best.
Some other member photos of the aqueduct are shown below.

Our next outing is to Shipwreck Bay and the Bird Hide at Homebush Bay on Sunday June 5. This evening coincides with a full moon which will rise over the shipwrecks.

The focus for our next month is birds and hopefully we can get some great photos of water birds at Homebush Bay

June Ten Pin Bowling Report

Zone Bowling Castle Hill has reopened. To satisfy social distancing criteria there is a strict limit on numbers and based on the enquiry I made we can have up to 12 bowlers participate. They also assured me that strict steps are being taken on the hygiene side however "proof is always in the pudding".

I know some members who have bowled in the past might have reservations about playing given the virus is still with us.

In light of this I will be contacting all members who have bowled previously to ascertain firstly if you are comfortable in participating and secondly if you are available to bowl on Friday afternoon 17 July.

Live Theatre June 2020

Given ongoing social distancing in response to the Corona Virus emergency, it would appear that live theatre performances will not be reinstated until late in the recovery process however rest assured, any monies already received in respect of any outing will be refunded in full.

I will continue to monitor the ongoing situation and I will keep you all informed about any further developments.

Disney’s Frozen:
Adapted from the Oscar-winning film, Frozen the Musical is expertly brought to the stage by acclaimed Director Michael Grandage, giving life to this beloved story in an all new, unforgettable theatrical experience.

This season at The Capitol Theatre will now commence on 1 December 2020.

Tickets to the original performance on Wednesday 19 August 2020 at 7:00 PM have now been rescheduled to Wednesday 17 February 2021 at 7:00 PM with the same seating originally selected. If you have already paid and this date is no longer suitable please let me know a.s.a.p.

We still have currently reserved 30 seats for the Australian premiere season of Disney’s Frozen at the Capitol Theatre, at 7:00pm cost is $78 including return bus. Frozen opened on Broadway on March 22, 2018 and has since set (and subsequently broken!) four St. James Theatre house records.

Payment is now due by 30th September 2020 to West Pennant Hills and District Probus Club Activities and Events Account.

Please quote your surname and “Frozen”.

Come from Away:
We still have had no formal announcement from The State Theatre about the ongoing availability of this show but, I would expect that chances of this show going ahead at the originally scheduled time of August 2020 would also be somewhat remote.

Again, I will continue to keep you informed as detail comes to hand.

Walking Report – June

Platypus Walk   -   Tuesday 2nd June
We didn’t see any platypus………I think it is a long time since they lived in the creeks. However, it is a beautiful short walk that I highly recommend to anyone in the club. Within 200 metres of the start you would think you were somewhere in the Blue Mountains’ bushland. We had 16 starters on the day, having lost a further 11 who cancelled on the morning of the walk due to the weather outlook. However, we enjoyed fine weather and good company. The combination of a lovely walk and being able to mix with friends again made for a great morning.

Heritage Park Walk   -  Tuesday 16th June
We were granted a beautiful, clear Winter’s day. Forty one members showed up to visit some of the historic remnants left in the park and surrounds. We broke up into two groups and wandered around the circuit, visiting Banks cottage and also seeing the bower bird boudoir. Afterwards we gathered on the bench seats and had a picnic lunch. Barry Wailes kindly donated and cooked up a sausage sizzle on the bar-b-q. Everyone was able to catch up with friends they hadn’t seen for a couple of months. An enjoyable morning.

Next Walk   -  Tuesday 30th June    Fagan Park
