Ian Roberts President

Welcome to the November newsletter.

It was very pleasing to again see an excellent rollup of close to 80 at the last Members’ Meeting and the 30 odd who lunched afterwards.  Judging by the many conversations at morning tea, everyone seems to be mixing well and meeting new people.

By now, you should have received an email from Probus South Pacific giving you access to the Active Retirees magazine.  We should also be able to provide you with your Probus cards at the next meeting.

The key to the success of any Probus Club is the extent to which members participate in activities organised through the activity groups.  We have 16 activity groups in the club which provide a wide cross section of interests for members. Each group is led and organised by a very effective leader and they provide a venue where people with a common interest can gather.  I would encourage you to review the schedule in this Newsletter and register to participate in the various activities.

We are still looking for Activity Leaders for the Trips Away, Card Games and Craft activities.  If you feel that you could lead one of these groups, or share the role, please contact Glenda Coote (Events Coordinator) to discuss it with her.

I look forward to seeing you at the next meeting.

Ian Roberts

Julie Warner - Julie Warner Travel Plans

Julie will speak about Travel and the Secrets to Successful Travel Planning.
This will cover some of my personal travel experiences to over 100 countries and then look at steps you can take planning your own successful travels.

BIO

After meeting her husband on a European Contiki tour 23 years ago, Julie has personally travelled to over 100 countries and along with her Husband, they have taken their 15 & 13-year-old children to 50 countries. These trips have included: 3 – weeks through Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, 10 – weeks through South America, 6 – weeks through Central America and Cuba along with many other journeys.

From her love of travel, Julie started a travel planning business 10 years ago which offers a unique “Travel Broker Service” which researches existing Travel Providers both on-line and physical agencies to provide an independent review of available travel options for each itinerary.  The broker service does all the research, phoning around, price negotiations and comparisons of costs and options for your trip so you are assured you are getting good value for your money

Julie has published her first travel planning book “Going Somewhere and taking the kids! – Our journey through Vietnam. Cambodia and Laos” and is close to completing her second book covering the 10-week trip with her family through South America.

Having travelled on many extensive trips, Julie found that there were very few tools available to capture all the planning details required for these holidays, and set about developing a PC based travel planning App to assist with putting together these itineraries and providing a central repository for all quotes, travel requirements and customisable packing and check lists.

With over 25 years of independent travel experience that has led to a wealth of knowledge, Julie wants to share this with others so they have the confidence and ability to do the travelling that they have always dreamt of, as she has been able to do with her family.

Melbourne Cup Lunch - Afternoon Tuesday 1 November

What a great afternoon!  We were all very happy with the Waterview Restaurant. Beautiful outlook, fabulous buffet with lots of variety, lots of food and unlimited drinks.  Bev Davison won the prize for best hat and best dressed.

Thanks to my sleazy punter’s hat and form guides I won best hat and we both received a beautiful gift box of wines. Our table also cleaned up the sweepstakes with numerous wins and places.

We were so impressed we decided to do it all again at Waterview next year.

Fishing

Picture
The fishing day held on the 2/11/16 was well attended by five capable fishermen. However, our catch was below par... The team managed to land two fish, a nice little bream and a tailor.

The crew had a sausage sizzle and a celebratory drink to toast a very nice day on Berowra Waters.

Looking forward to the next fish which is scheduled for Wednesday 7/12/16.

Gardening

Our Gardening Group members met for our monthly information morning at the Bunning Castle Hill store.

Alex from Bonsai Environment showed us how to treat a plant for bonsaing - "cut hard and often" seems to be the most commonly used saying of a professional gardener!!!

We were given a petunia to take home and there were two lucky door prizes. We then sat around in the cafe and enjoyed our free cappuccinos and lots of chatting.

Our regular Bunnings Garden Group will not be meeting during December and January.

The next outing is scheduled for the 28th November at Lynwood Country Club. Tee off will be @1.30PM

Movies

Picture

This month our Movie Group met on Wednesday 9/11 to give members who can't attend our usual Fridays a chance to enjoy a movie.

The Group attended a special Wednesday Seniors Screening of The Light Between Oceans, which included a free morning tea of: Tea & Coffee plus biscuits, lamingtons, mince pies, jam & lemon tarts etc which was constantly filled up.  Everyone really enjoyed the film even though it was a bit of a tear jerker.

The Light Between Oceans is adapted from a best-selling literary novel, by Australian author M.L. Stedman. The story is about a WWI veteran who returns from combat and takes up sole residence as a lighthouse keeper on a tiny island off the coast of Western Australia.

Picture
Due to the usual Christmas rush we start experiencing from now until the end of the year there'll be no movie day in December.

We will be organising a movie day for January and will sent details once the new releases and published.

Overseas Travel

Overseas Travel is off to a good start with our planned 17 day Trip to Canada and Alaska
leaving from Sydney 3rd June 2017.

The full itinerary was emailed to members earlier this month and we will need final numbers
by the end of November.

The emailed itinerary for this trip can be downloaded here.

However at this stage, there has been very little interest in our planned Trip to Alaska and Canada for next year.  Unless we can get at least twelve people, the trip will not go ahead.

The Trip to Japan to see the Cherry Blossoms in March/April 2018 is likely to attract more interest and gives everyone a chance to plan well ahead.

Please contact me directly if you are interested in either of these trips.

Please email me to register your interest [email protected] or call me for further

Disney’s Beauty & the Beast:
Based on the Academy-Award winning animated feature, the stage version of Disney's BEAUTY AND THE BEAST includes all of the wonderful songs written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.

Maurice's daughter, Belle, must then give up her freedom to save his life. Belle's taming of the unfortunate Beast and his ultimate transformation back into a handsome prince enthralled Broadway audiences for over 13 years.

Walking Group

Picture
The walking group enjoyed an 8 km walk through Lane Cove National Park on Tuesday the 8th of November. I am pleased to report that all 9 of us managed the walk, even though there were some more hills than last time, and it became rather warm.

The walk ended up in Cheltenham, but we ended up having a pleasant lunch at Pennant Hills hotel, as some fluid replacement was required. All in all a good day, in very good company.

Walking will re-commence in February next year. So take notice of January's newsletter, where we will furnish details of the February walk.
