President's Report
Tony Coote President
Hi fellow members
The recent heavy rains, while welcome, have put a “damper” on some of our recent events such as golf. March should bring back more activities to our calendar with Walking resuming on March 10th after a summer break to avoid the heat.
We did manage to avoid most of the rain on our day trip to Gosford. What a fabulous day out. 29 of us explored the Gosford Art Gallery and Japanese Gardens, then boarded the Lady Kendall 2 for a very extensive tour of Brisbane waters and right down to the Hawkesbury river entrance. Lunch, a glass or two, and good friends. Thanks Helen, it was a great way to spend a day out.
I also went along to Investment Group at David Antonjuk’s house. We have a growing group and the monthly topics are interesting and always generate lots of discussion. David shows off his culinary skills by baking us a great cake or slice each month. Come along. Experienced investors and learners are all welcome.
A reminder to always take an Iphone or Camera with you to activities. We often miss out on opportunities to showcase our great activities in the Newsletter.
On Tuesday 18th February we had our last committee meeting for this Probus Year. The meeting was largely devoted to preparation for our Annual General Meeting. I would like to thank the entire committee for all their hard work to make all aspects of our club work so well. They are a cohesive and energetic team. Well done all.
Its all about Fun and Fellowship! Come along as often as you can and enjoy your Probus Club!

Guest Speaker At February Meeting -Alisa Vartuli - Fred Hollows Foundation
Alisa Vartuli, works at The Fred Hollows Foundation as the Communications Coordinator.
She helps manage the branding content and awareness activities for The Foundation, recently she worked on the national event The Fred Hollows Humanity Award in which Year 6 students across Australia are nominated for displaying acts of kindness and compassion. She enjoys cooking for others and trying new food in her spare time.
The Fred Hollows Foundation now works in more than 25 countries and has restored sight to over two and a half million people worldwide. This couldn’t have been achieved without the overwhelming support of the Australian public. We’re as determined now as ever to end avoidable blindness. 4 out of 5 people who are blind don't need to be – there remains so much to do.
Fred's work continues very much in the way it started: by just getting on with it. The Foundation trains doctors, nurses and healthcare workers, distributes antibiotics, raises money for much needed equipment and medical facilities and performs eye operations exactly like the ones Fred did more than 30 years ago.
When someone's sight is restored, it gives people the chance for a better life. They're able to work, go to school and provide for their families. Fred believed that everyone, no matter whether they were rich or poor, had the right to affordable eye care. Our work won't stop until the injustice of avoidable blindness is completely eradicated in Australia and in the rest of the world.
We believe, without a doubt, this will one day be accomplished.

Important Notice – Attendance at Activities
As a matter of courtesy, please consider the Activity Organiser, and sign up and pay well in advance. It is very difficult for the organiser and the venue if most people have booked and paid well in advance, and a few people decide to turn up at the last minute. Restaurants and venues have often allocated tables, and squeezing extra people in is difficult. It also makes the job of accounting for the payments very confusing.
If you cannot attend a function that you have booked, please notify the Activity Organiser as early as possible so that the venue can be notified. If you have already paid, your payment will be refunded if the venue agrees to accept the reduction in bookings. This is covered in detail in our Activity Refund Policy.
Because of several recent events, we are forced to change our policy. For pre-paid events, if your money is not in the Activities Account by the organiser’s due date, you will not be able to join the group at the venue. You are of course free to make your own booking, but those who have paid in advance will have preference for seating, and if no space is available at the booked table you may have to sit separately.
Our Activity Organisers work hard to provide you with great activities. Please help make their job as easy as possible.

WPH&D PROBUS BOOK CHALLENGE
After the flurry of reading over Summer, our reading total in the Spring/Summer Challenge is now 30! Not bad for only 5 participants! There’s only a few weeks left in the challenge now, so after an initial goal total of 29 – now met – we should be able to add another few before the challenge ends. The reviews by the readers have been really great to send you onto a different path of reading.
With the coming of the AGM and a new Probus Year, we will continue our reading with the Curl up and Read Challenge to take us through the colder months. It will run from March to to August. We’d love you to join us, take a flyer from the back table at the next meeting, to find out how to do it, or search in Facebook for WPH&D Probus Book Challenge. The more readers the wider the range you get to know about.
Our Facebook group is a closed group, so that you can only see posts if you are a member of this group. If you want to join the challenge, but don’t want to do so through Facebook, you can still set a challenge and keep me updated via email. You can also unjoin at any time.
Hardcopy, ebook, audio book, fiction or non-fiction, substantial children’s books all allowed.

Cycling Group March 2020
Six of our members went on our March ride around Iron Cove. It was a very pleasant day out in perfect weather. We rode the circuit twice then settled in for a well-earned coffee and snack. Three riders from Thornleigh Probus Club have also joined us on recent rides.
For our March ride on Wednesday 4th March, we will travel to Chittaway Bay on the Central Coast. We ride from Chittaway Bay to The Entrance. Its all on cycle tracks and is mostly flat along the shores of Tuggerah Lake.
There are lots of water views and the birdlife is abundant. There are some good places to grab a coffee and a bite to eat at The Entrance. The ride is 11 Km each way and we return the way we came.
We will meet at the Cherrybrook Community Centre at 9AM in the carpark and can rideshare. Please bring water and sun protection. Those that wish to meet at Chittaway Bay, please plan to be there for 10.15AM. Address for the start point is Chittaway Bay Lions Park corner of Lake Edge Avenue and Thomas Walker Drive.

Cruise Brisbane Waters on the Lady Kendall 2 - Wednesday 12th February 2020
Twenty – nine Probus members car-pooled to the Gosford Regional Gallery. Lisa, a local artist gave us a conducted tour of the gallery’s two exhibitions. The first was the Gosford Art Prize 1970 – 2020 which was first awarded by Russell Drysdale. It has played a significant role in the cultural life of the Central coast for 50 years. The exhibition commemorates the 50 year history of the prize told through a wide variety of paintings and ceramics from the Central Coast Council collection and contemporary work from the most awarded and exhibited artists of the last 20 years.
The second exhibition was ‘Through Two Decades’ by Helen Geier. In 1970 Sir Russell Drysdale awarded a young Helen Geier ‘ Best Painting by a Local Artist’ in the very first Gosford Art Prize. She went on to become an awarded Australian artist exhibiting nationally and internationally.
We were also given a guided tour of the Japanese Edogawa Gardens. The gardens are based on a traditional Shuyu or strolling – style garden and have been designed in accordance with the original principles of the Japanese Heian period (700AD).
At 1.00pm we boarded the Lady Kendall 2 for a two and a half hour lunch cruise around Brisbane Waters. We avoided the rain and thoroughly enjoyed the friendship, food and views.

20 Gardening Group members attended the February Bunnings Garden Session. This month we heard about “Neutrog”, an Australian owned and based company which started out producing naturally sourced products to sell to Aussie farmers. Since then it has grown to include soil enriching products for gardeners as well as farmers and the company’s products are now in big demand internationally.
2 of our members had their ‘lucky number’ tickets drawn, enabling them to select products that had been explained during the presentation.
Lorenza won the first prize and selected a bale of ‘whoflungdung’, a poultry manure based natural “super mulch”.
Additionally, we all received 2 sample size bottles of ‘gogo juice’ (a pro-biotic liquid for soil and plants), a booklet on the companies product range to enable us to determine which products are best for specific gardening needs as well as the usual free plant and coffee which we all enjoyed while having a nice catch up chat after the presentation.

Golf Group February 2020
Our February game was not played at Asquith, Carnarvon or even Muirfield and was not played at North Ryde either due to the much needed rain.
16 Fabulous Probus Golfers were to enjoy a day on the course, this was not to be.
Our next outing and first for the 2020 year will be in March 06th and will be at Asquith Golf Course, (subject to weather conditions).
I have a confirmed booking at the Course for 2 x 18 hole groups teeing off at 8:34 and 8:41 respectively, and 2 x 9 hole groups teeing off at 10:05 and 10:12 respectively.

Investment Group - January 2020
After a two month sabbatical over the Christmas/New year period, the Investment Group was up and running again on Tuesday 18th February. The meeting was well attended with 13 participants and we also welcomed a new member, Ray Heaton.
The topic for the meeting was ‘Super as a “Life Style” provider. Understanding Retail, Industry and Self-Managed Super Funds (SMSF)’. MOVIE GROUP
At our February movie day, Movie Group Members split up to see a several difference movies.
This included:
1917 - During World War I, two British soldiers -- Lance Cpl. Schofield and Lance Cpl. Blake -- receive seemingly impossible orders. In a race against time, they must cross over into enemy territory to deliver a message that could potentially save 1,600 of their fellow comrades.
Midway - On Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese forces launch a devastating attack on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. naval base in Hawaii. Six months later, the Battle of Midway commences on June 4, 1942, as the Japanese navy once again plans a strike against American ships in the Pacific. For the next three days, the U.S. Navy and a squad of brave fighter pilots engage the enemy in one of the most important and decisive battles of World War II.
Dolittle - Dr. John Dolittle lives in solitude behind the high walls of his lush manor in 19th-century England. His only companionship comes from an array of exotic animals that he speaks to on a daily basis. But when young Queen Victoria becomes gravely ill, the eccentric doctor and his furry friends embark on an epic adventure to a mythical island to find the cure.
A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood - Lloyd Vogel is an investigative journalist who receives an assignment to profile Fred Rogers, aka Mr. Rogers. He approaches the interview with skepticism, as he finds it hard to believe that anyone can have such a good nature. But Roger's empathy, kindness and decency soon chips away at Vogel's jaded outlook on life, forcing the reporter to reconcile with his own painful past.
As per our usual routine, we then all met up for lunch and a good catch up chat.
Our next Movie Day will be on Tuesday, 3rd March. Movie options will be emailed for Movie group members nearer to the day.
Please let Sue know if you’re interested in being added to the Gardening and/or Movie email group lists to be kept up to date of the activities.

Ten Pin Bowling Report - February
We had 12 bowlers for February including Ray who came along for the first time.
On the playing front the Max, Ken & David stood out whilst all the girls bowled well with Jeanette & Toni just shading an unlucky Hilda.
Our next event will take place on Friday 20 March at Zone Bowling’s Castle Hill venue (3 Salisbury St) commencing at 1.45pm.
As usual, I will be texting a week out from play those members who have participated previously together with those who have expressed an interest in playing to ascertain who wishes to participate.
Again for those members who have not previously expressed an interest to participate and wish to do so, there will be a registration sheet available at the Club’s monthly meeting. Alternatively, you can contact me directly by phone.

We still meet every Monday morning at 9.00am at West Pennant Hills Sports Club, a small group but we have fun.
We would welcome more players so why not come along and join us.
Your standard of play isn’t important, just come along and give it a go, you might surprise yourself and have fun.

Next Walk
WYNYARD to CIRCULAR QUAY via BARANGAROO
Tuesday 10th March
We will have a gentle introduction for our first walk in 2020. This easy, flat walk of about 4 kilometres will allow us to check the development of the new Barangaroo waterfront, including the new Crown Casino building that is starting to dominate the area, and the new Metro train station that is currently under construction.
We will walk what is known as The Wulugul Walk around the Barangaroo waterfront headland with its beautiful landscaping and water views. We will then continue on past the finger wharves and beneath the harbour bridge until we reach Circular Quay. If anyone is particularly keen, they could walk out past the opera house and on to Woolloomooloo wharf.
The walk to Circular Quay will take about an hour and half depending on how many stops people wish to make. There is plenty to see including The Cutaway, Wellama display and Stargazers Lawn. We can have coffee in one of the many coffee shops beneath the finger wharves along Hickson Road.
Arrangements: Catch a train from Cherrybrook or Castle Hill around 9.30 am and all meet up at Wharf Number 2 on the bay at 10.30 am. To get to Wharf Number 2 take the Barangaroo exit (number 4) from Wynyard station and continue through the exit tunnel, up the escalators at the end of the tunnel, then continue straight ahead until you reach the waterfront. You can’t miss Wharf 2.
Enio will lead this walk as I will be away.
