President's Report
Hi fellow members.
2019 is almost over! Just a few more events leading up to Christmas and then a lot of people will be away or spending time with family and loved ones. Please be sure to sign up and pay for the Christmas Lunch at Allegro on 18th December. The response so far has been amazing with 66 people paid already.
A special thanks to Julie Shenstone and Susan Antonjuk for so capably arranging our Wine and Cheese evenings each month. They are always great evenings. This month was no exception with the Shenstone House taking on an Adams Family feel for the evening. Bain and Julie went to an enormous amount of effort. We really appreciate all their efforts, and I encourage members to volunteer their homes for future Wine & Cheese evenings. Why not have a special theme for your Wine and Cheese evening?
A great day out to Dangar Island on 25th October. A ferry trip on the beautiful Hawkesbury, followed by morning tea at the home of Ann Howard, and a fascinating talk about the history of the island. A leisurely lunch followed and a relaxing ferry trip back to Brooklyn. Thanks again to Helen Games for the varied and interesting day trips she arranges. We have a combined group outing to Mount Penang Gardens on 26th November being arranged by Sue Small
Our Annual General Meeting is approaching quickly. As you know, most of the committee members will be resigning their positions and not standing for re-election. Please give serious consideration to serving on the committee next year. The effort you put in will be rewarded many times over. Please make your interest known to the committee and submit a nomination form to the Secretary by Tuesday 25th February 2020.
Its all about Fun and Fellowship! Come along as often as you can and enjoy your Probus Club!

Tribute To Brian Powyer - (1948 - 2019)
It was with great sadness that we heard of Brian Powyer’s passing last Tuesday morning (12th November).
Brian was a great asset to our Club and we valued him for his deep knowledge of local and Australian history through his talks and the many bush walks he arranged.
On Wednesday 28th March 2019 he was our guest speaker presenting “Australia – Almost French”. This was, as usual an excellent, very informative talk and we all learnt a lot about France's role in early Australian history that most of us had never heard of before.
He also gave a talk on Governor Arthur Phillip to the WPH and Cherrybrook Rotary Club on Monday 28th October 2019. Again this was very informative and was typical of Brian's extensive knowledge on the history of early Australia (1700's to 1800's) and in particular, his vast knowledge on Parramatta's history.
Below is an excerpt from the article the National Trust (NSW) sent to their members.
It is with great sadness that the National Trust (NSW) shares the news that our President, Brian Powyer, passed away yesterday following a sudden heart attack on Saturday.
Brian was born in Bathurst in 1948 and spent his life tirelessly contributing to the community as a teacher, school Principal, as Principal, Assistant Director Curriculum NSW and Secretary of the NSW Primary Principals Association.
Brian Powyer was a member of the National Trust for more than 30 years and has served as a volunteer guide at Old Government House. He was previously Chair of both the Parramatta Branch and the Education Committee. Brian was elected as President of the National Trust in New South Wales in December 2017 and also served as national Chair of the Australian Council of National Trusts and on various committees over the years.
Brian has worked tirelessly for the Trust, believing passionately in the preservation and protection of our built, cultural and natural heritage. His death is a great loss to the organisation and will be felt significantly throughout the community.
The National Trust (NSW)’s thoughts are first and foremost with Brian's wife, Lorenza, his two children and his grandchildren.
Brian was a man of the people and was actively involved with National Trust members and volunteers. Many of you will have met Brian directly over the years and we will share a fitting tribute to him at this year's Annual General Meeting on 30 November 2019.
Brian’s funeral was held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday in the crematorium at the old cemetery at North Ryde. His funeral was attended by a very large number of people (including many of our members) who had known Brian over his lifetime, including National Trust staff and members, retired primary school principals, as well as others that had gone through teacher training with him. The chapel was overflowing and people had to sit on plastic chairs or stand just outside the chapel doors.
We would like to pass on to Lorenza and Brian’s family the deep felt condolences from all of us, including son Nathan and daughter Alicia, grandchildren Anna, Melody and Olivia, his mother Ellen, brother Buzz and sister Lea.

Important Notice – Attendance at Activities
As a matter of courtesy, please consider the Activity Organiser, and sign up and pay well in advance. It is very difficult for the organiser and the venue if most people have booked and paid well in advance, and a few people decide to turn up at the last minute. Restaurants and venues have often allocated tables, and squeezing extra people in is difficult. It also makes the job of accounting for the payments very confusing.
If you cannot attend a function that you have booked, please notify the Activity Organiser as early as possible so that the venue can be notified. If you have already paid, your payment will be refunded if the venue agrees to accept the reduction in bookings. This is covered in detail in our Activity Refund Policy.
Because of several recent events, we are forced to change our policy. For pre-paid events, if your money is not in the Activities Account by the organiser’s due date, you will not be able to join the group at the venue. You are of course free to make your own booking, but those who have paid in advance will have preference for seating, and if no space is available at the booked table you may have to sit separately.
Our Activity Organisers work hard to provide you with great activities. Please help make their job as easy as possible.

Melbourne Cup Lunch
Nine of us went to the Waterview Restaurant at Berowra Waters for Melbourne Cup lunch.
The food was great, as was the wine & beer!
Some of our better dressed gentlemen even entered the best dressed competition & almost pulled it off.
Unfortunately Max & Bob were pipped at the post by an outsider.

TAMWORTH 2020
I have received an invoice from On Course Tours for the trip. The full amount needs to be paid by 16th December. Could everyone please deposit their payment into the Activities account by, say, 10th December so that I can consolidate everything and pay them by the due date.
I have also checked with On Course Tours about our accommodation. They assure me that we are staying at the CH Boutique Hotel in the middle of Tamworth and almost right on the corner of Peel Street. On Course’s website shows the hotel as the Ibis but they have 2 tours going and the Ibis is for the other tour.
The price of the trip has also increased over what I may have indicated earlier this year. That is because the hotel has put up its prices.
If you have any other queries, please let me know.

WPH&D PROBUS BOOK CHALLENGE
All members have now reached Goal, congratulations to Cathy Turner who reached goal in October. Now all members have reached their personal goals. The Spring/Summer Challenge is now underway. Already the group has achieved 12 books in this challenge bringing the total number of books read to 99 books since February this year. We all found our book club book a bit of a challenge to read, but some of us got there in the end.
The Spring/Summer Challenge will go until the end of February 2020. If you’d like to join up for the new challenge, take a flyer from the back table at the next meeting, to find out how to do it, or search in Facebook for WPH&D Probus Book Challenge. Let’s see if we can really get into reading!
Our Facebook group is a closed group, so that you can only see posts if you are a member of this group. If you want to join the challenge, but don’t want to do so through Facebook, you can still set a challenge and keep me updated via email. You can also unjoin at any time.
Hardcopy, ebook, audio book, fiction or non-fiction, substantial children’s books all allowed.

Cards 500 report November
Since our last meeting we have had 2 card nights on 25 October and 22 November. Both nights were lots of fun with 25 and 30 members participating respectively and the majority having dinner beforehand.
It looks like the less experienced participants are becoming more confident and having fun playing, while the more experienced are setting up challenges and having good serious fun!
There will not be cards next month but we will probably resume in January. An email will be sent out confirming this closer to the play date.

Historical Tour Of Dangar Island Friday 25th October
The ferry from Brooklyn took us to Dangar Island via Wobby Beach. After a 5 minute walk up the hill at Dangar Island we arrived at the home of Australian author and journalist Ann Howard. Ann has lived on Dangar Island for 38 years and has written four books on the history of the island and the Lower Hawkesbury. She specialises in collecting the social histories of the local people.
Ann lives in a heritage home – The Pavilion – built in about 1887. She bought the run down property in the 1970’s and has slowly restored it.
On our arrival Ann invited us into her garden for morning tea and presented each of us with a signed copy of one of her books. We were taken into the house, and with the help of artefacts and photos, she told us about the history of the island.
Following the talk we had lunch at Dangar Depot. The café was right next to the wharf and as well as delicious food we enjoyed fabulous water views and a welcoming cool breeze.
It proved to be a memorable day.

Date – 26 November
Time – 9.00am
Meet at Heritage Park – off Old Castle Hill Road – where we’ll organise car-pooling (would people please let me know if they’re prepared to drive). The Photography and Day Trip group members have agreed to join us.
If anyone would prefer to meet us at the gardens, the address is 16 The Avenue, Kariong - approx 60km trip. The best way to drive to the gardening is up the M1 and take the Gosford turn off, which goes on to the Central Coast Hwy. The Avenue is a very short distance then left turn.

Welcome to our beautiful gardens.
Opened in November 2003, Mt Penang Gardens is considered an enduring and radical contribution to public garden design in Australia. Its distinctive design by Anton James sets it apart from the traditional botanical garden. His garden within a garden produces an understated landscape that is less manicured and in a constant state of being. It continues to evolve today.
12 unique garden rooms, sculptures and cascading waterways.Individual ‘gardens’ are set on and around a large sculptural plateau and walled spaces, abstract pergolas, fountains, ponds, cascades and a 35 metre cantilevered steel footbridge.
Over 8 hectares of native beauty.
Along with waterways and stunning summer aquatic gardens, you’ll find that over 70% of the plants are native to Australia. Marvel at the creative ways in which modern landscapes and Australian native flora blend together to produce amazing seasonal displays.
Take the discovery trail
There is something new to experience all year round as you meander through the Gardens. You can hug a bulbous Bottle Tree; wonder at the Dragon Garden’s strange cacti and succulents; be fascinated by the Wondabyne Stone Sculptures; or admire the stunning water lilies and lotus flowers in our Aquatic Garden. From drought tolerant displays to our playful puddle gardens, every pathway opens up a new world of discovery at Mt Penang Gardens.
“The suitability of the site for an enormous game of hide and seek did not escape me. You are never really sure what to expect when making the next turn.” JMD Design director Anton James.

Probus Investment Group - November
The Investment Group met on Tuesday 19th November at the home of David Antonjuk. The presentation topic for the day was “An introduction to investing in shares – a naïve investor’s view of investing in shares”.
The presentation prompted discussion and it was great to see all of us either asking questions or contributing with their comments, knowledge and/or experiences. I for one, certainly came away with more knowledge and understanding and I was the one who prepared the presentation!
Thanks to all who attended. Another highlight of the day (I hope) was the “Danish Apple Cake” I baked – everyone said they enjoyed it. [The PIG now even have the recipe!]
Finally, due to the upcoming festive season, the next Investment Group Meeting will now be held on Tuesday 18th February.

MEN'S CLUB - September
On Thursday 31st October seven of us went to to Williamtown Airport to see the Fighter World museum.
It was a hot and very hazy day which didn't help in taking good clear photos of the F/A-18A/B Hornets that were taking off, flying around and landing during the day.
However one keen photographer, with a large telescopic lens, was taking photos of the Hornets for a lady whose son was one of the Hornet co-pilots and five exellent and he emailed five close up photos. These can be seen below.
There were a number of older fighters, dating back to a second world war spitfire, as well as a Mirage, F111-C, Aermacchi (Macchi).
We had our morning tea coffees at Maca's and lunch at the Fighter World cafe.
A good day was had by all!
Our Next Outing:
19th December - Christmas drinks at West Pennant Hills Sports Club.
I would welcome any ideas for next year so that we can plan some exciting activities and outings for 2020.

Ten Pin Bowling Report
Ten pin Bowling took place on 18 0ctober.
A special thank you to Cliff who filled in during my absence.
The scores were very close on the day with Ken Lewis bowling well & Toni having the bragging rights in the Smith household.
I have elected to cancel Ten Pin Bowling for November given the large number of bowlers going on the cruise.
I would normally not schedule a game in December given the third Friday is only five days before X’mas however, in light of there being no bowling in November, I will send out am “sms” on the Friday before (13/12) to determine the level of interest.

Come along and join us, we would welcome more players. Your standard of play isn’t important, just come along and give it a go, you might surprise yourself and have fun.
