President's Report
Tony Coote President
Hi fellow members. We have just returned from 4 days in The Southern Highlands. 13 of us toured the area around Bowral and saw some beautiful gardens, as its only a week after the Tulip Festival and everything was still in full bloom.
Lots of local attractions, great dining out at local restaurants and a cosy hotel at Mittagong. It all made for a very pleasant break.
Many thanks to Max Henderson for all his hard work to make the trip so interesting and enjoyable.

On 12th and 13th of October, our foundation Rotary Club held its annual Garage Sale, with all the proceeds going to charities, especially the NSW farmers who are doing it very tough at the moment.
It was fabulous to see so many of our Probus Club members supporting the Rotary Garage Sale. A special thanks to all who helped with the setting up before-hand and operating the stalls at the sale. Even though it was a wet weekend, total sales were over $35,000.
There has been some discussion about our Venue at Cherrybrook Community Centre since the Member Survey earlier this year. Whilst the great majority of our members are happy with this venue, there are some members who are not completely satisfied, so we undertook to review the options.
Ian Roberts has finalised a detailed study of the options available. These will be reviewed by your committee on Tuesday 22nd October and the outcome presented to the members at the General Meeting the following day. Many thanks to Ian for pulling all the data together once again.
Its all about Fun and Fellowship! Come along as often as you can and enjoy your Probus Club!

Important Notice – Attendance at Activities
As a matter of courtesy, please consider the Activity Organiser, and sign up and pay well in advance. It is very difficult for the organiser and the venue if most people have booked and paid well in advance, and a few people decide to turn up at the last minute. Restaurants and venues have often allocated tables, and squeezing extra people in is difficult. It also makes the job of accounting for the payments very confusing.
If you cannot attend a function that you have booked, please notify the Activity Organiser as early as possible so that the venue can be notified. If you have already paid, your payment will be refunded if the venue agrees to accept the reduction in bookings. This is covered in detail in our Activity Refund Policy.
Because of several recent events, we are forced to change our policy. For pre-paid events, if your money is not in the Activities Account by the organiser’s due date, you will not be able to join the group at the venue. You are of course free to make your own booking, but those who have paid in advance will have preference for seating, and if no space is available at the booked table you may have to sit separately.
Our Activity Organisers work hard to provide you with great activities. Please help make their job as easy as possible.

WPH&D PROBUS BOOK CHALLENGE
Congratulations to Beverly Dona and Julie Shenstone on reaching their personal goals. Between them they read 24 books this year, and at this time the group has achieved 93 books total. That’s a wonderful amount of time spent getting immersed into other worlds and wonderful stories.
The Challenge continues - the Spring/Summer Challenge - and this will go until the end of February 2020. If you’d like to join up for the new challenge, take a flyer from the back table at the next meeting, to find out how to do it, or search in Facebook for WPH&D Probus Book Challenge. Let’s see if we can really get into reading!
Our Facebook group is a closed group, so that you can only see posts if you are a member of this group. If you really don’t want to do Facebook, you can still set a challenge and keep me updated via email. You can also unjoin at any time.
Hardcopy, ebook, audio book, fiction or non-fiction, substantial children’s books all allowed.

Bridge Group October 2019
It is with some regret, yet looking forward to our future, that we have to let you all know that we are unable to continue as Activity Leaders for the Probus Bridge Group.
Therefore there will be no Bridge this month and on-going, unless somebody can host the activity.
Our home is on the market, with first open home this Saturday.
We will be moving out Kellyville Ridge way into a small place that will not have the room to host the Bridge Group.
It has been a pleasure to have you all at our home for the Bridge Sessions and we have had a really great time.
We remain members of the Probus Group and look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting.

October Gardening Group
Our gardening group meets on the second Thursday of each month. Last week we met at the usual Bunnings, Castle Hill and enjoyed a presentation on bulbs. Some members were even lucky enough to take some home. We then had a free coffee and a variety of sweets followed by friendship and fellowship i.e. lots of yacking.
As we did not visit Mt Anan last month we are considering visiting Mt Penang on the Central Coast. As our Club members are so busy we have left it till late November to visit this native garden. Watch this space for further details.
We are enjoying this activity so why not come along and join us. Not many of us do a lot of gardening but we still enjoy learning some new tricks particularly during this dry period.

A great day out at Carnarvon and many thanks to Bruce Bartle for being such a great host. Twelve of use ventured out for the usual 9 or 18 holes followed by lunch in the clubhouse afterwards. It was quite a hot day so a cold beer went down very well afterwards.
Our next outing is at Muirfield on Friday 1st November. Its an Ambrose event, so everyone has to play 18 holes, but should be lots of fun and we will have some prizes for the winners. We have 16 slots booked, so please let Terry or Tony know if you will be playing. Also if you need a cart, and if joining the group for lunch afterwards.

Bare Foot Bowls October 2019
As our bowls day, at the Hills Club on 16/10/19 clashed with the Opal trip, our numbers were down, however, the 5 players who turned up had a good fun afternoon.
It was good to see that 3 of the 5, who played, were new starters, who all said that they had enjoyed the bowls.
As it was a fairly warm afternoon, we then visited the bar for a couple of coldies.
Our next scheduled bowls day in November will clash with the cruise & in December, the Hills club will be down to only 1 green, which is fully booked out for the month. So it looks like no bowls will be available until Feb. 2020.

We will meet in the Community Centre Carpark at 8.15am then car pooling for the 2hr. trip up. After coffee we have two hangers to visit for a totally ' hands on' experience such as sitting in the cockpit of a Mirage fighter. It should be an interesting and fun day!
21st November- Lunch, 12pm Pennant Hills Hotel.
19th December - Christmas drinks at West Pennant Hills Sports Club.
I would welcome any ideas for next year so that we can plan some exciting activities and outings for 2020.

Movies Day is on the first Tuesday of each month and usually held at Events Castle Hill. This month members had the option of seeing Hampton Abbey or Ride like a girl. Lunch followed after the movie at Cosmo Coffee shop. A most enjoyable morning was had by everyone.
Tuesday 5th November will be our next movie day. We have a few options for viewing at about the same time of the morning, usually 10.00 a.m. As we enjoyed the food at Cosmo we will book a table for refreshments after the movies. More information will be forwarded to those on our contact list for exact times etc. Come along and join us.

ANOTHER GREAT OPAL CARD TRIP
Southern Highlands –Tuesday 15th to Friday 18th October 2019
Another successful trip with a number of highlights, the following is a summary of what we enjoyed in the very picturesque Southern Highlands, refer photos below.
Tuesday
Drove to Mittagong (about 80 minutes), with some electing to visit the Thirlmere NSW Rail Museum and Tertini Winery, just west of Mittagong off the Old Hume Highway.
Our accommodation was the Springs Motel which adjoins the Mittagong RSL Club with dinner at the Scottish Arms Hotel at East Bowral.
Wednesday
Fitzroy Falls, we could almost stand on top of the falls to take in the beauty, all of which was only a short walk from the carpark and visitors centre.
Kangaroo Valley, an historic village which is home to many interesting shops offering contemporary and vintage products.
Robertson, this township is located on the edge of an elevated plateau including the famous pie shop (lunch), after which we broke into smaller groups with various options:
Dinner was at the Vin Santo Italian Restaurant at Mittagong.
Thursday
We started with the Corbett Gardens at Bowral, renowned for its Tulips.
Then to Berrima, a step back in time providing a preserved town of yesteryear, including a gaol (still in use), a courthouse (enjoyed a guided tour) and many other historical buildings providing some shopping and browsing opportunities before lunch at a local café.
Red Cow Farm, one of the leading cold climate gardens in the district, set on 2.5 hectares in the rural village of Sutton Forest.
Some of us then visited the Moss Vale Farmers Market (every Thursday from 3.00pm) whilst others took up some of the options from Wednesday.
Dinner was at the adjoining Mittagong RSL Club with some electing for the seafood buffet over the bistro.
Friday
At leisure and before heading home some visiting attractions not covered during the previous days.
I would to thank all those who contributed to making this another great Opal Card trip.
I’m now seeking suggestions for out next trip which will possibly be October next year.

October Ten Pin Bowling Report
We had 10 players at Castle Hill Bowling Complex on Friday 20 September, which included Toni & Ken Smith who were first timers.
Max Henderson after a slow start for him was the star with a score in the 160’s. Cliff & Bruce also had very good performances in their second game.
On the ladies side it was fairly even until Toni stormed to the front in her second game.
Our next game is scheduled on Friday, 18 October. Normal numbers are likely to be down as there are a number of our regulars who will be away on holidays, Probus tours, etc.
If anyone has not indicated that they would like to participate in the future, please complete the sheet at the monthly meeting, or contact me.

Tennis Group Report - October 2019
We are a small group that play every Monday morning at 9.00am at West Pennant Hills Sports Club, we do have fun though.
Come along and join us, we would welcome more players. Your standard of play isn’t important, just come along and give it a go, you might surprise yourself and have fun.

Live Theatre October 2019
Honk! (the musical):
Our final theatre party for the year will be Honk! presented by Sydney Youth Musical Theatre at Hornsby RSL Club on Thursday 21 November at 7:30pm. As usual with SYMT performances, we will also reserve dining space at the club bistro beforehand.
This light-hearted and charming twist on Hans Christian Andersen's The Ugly Duckling is a story of acceptance. There's a brood of newly hatched ducklings on the farm, but one - "Ugly" - is an odd-looking duck. Failing to fit in, he leaves home and along the way meets a whole flock of unique characters, outwits a hungry Cat, and discovers that being different is not so bad.
The cost is just $32, for members and guests with payment by Friday 15 November to help secure good seats for that evening.
Billy Elliot:
We have 40 members and guests attending our theatre party to Billy Elliot the Musical – 10 Year Anniversary Tour on Wednesday 23 October 2019 at the Lyric Theatre at 7:00pm.
We will meet as usual at West Pennant Hills Sports Club on New Line Road, with the bus departing at 5:45pm to The Lyric Theatre Darling Harbour, with the show commencing at 7:00pm.
Your tickets will be issued as you board the bus that evening.
You probably already know that this date also coincides with our monthly meeting earlier that day, please also note that the club bistro does not open until 5:30pm that evening so that, dining at the club beforehand will be virtually impossible!!
Please note: Tickets will be distributed on the bus.
Cirque du Soleil:
Our Theatre Party to Cirque du Soleil on Wednesday, 13 November 2019 at the Entertainment Quarter Moore Park Sydney, under the Grand Chapiteau is now fully subscribed with all 30 tickets now allocated, again thank-you for your support and interest!!
Detail of travel arrangements will follow shortly, with the show commencing at 8:00pm with the bus departing from West Pennant Hills Sports Club with tickets again distributed on the bus.

Mid-West NSW Adventure April 2020
So far we have 28 people interested in the Mid-West of NSW Adventure planned for April 27th to May 1st 2020.

Whale Rock & Devlins Creek Walk
Fifteen walkers completed the lovely walk down from Pennant Hills Park to Devlins Creek and on to Whale Rock. The wildflowers were in bloom and the sulphur crested cockatoos were nesting and making a racket in many of the gum trees.
Walks like this one are what make Sydney a beautiful place to live. You only have to walk ten minutes from our built up areas to find yourself in natural bushland with abundant wildlife and lovely creeks and waterholes.
I think everyone enjoyed the day and the few of us who stayed behind for coffee afterwards felt that we had earned our refreshments.
Next Walk
Our next walk is scheduled on a date when many of us will be away on the cruise. I will talk to my extremely willing assistant (Enio) to see whether he is prepared to run another walk during my absence.
