President's Report
Tony Coote President
Hi fellow members
Six and a half weeks away! Glenda and I had a fabulous time with three separate adventures – a family reunion in Scotland, a Danube River cruise and a stay with good friends at a lake cottage in Canada. But its great to be back again and to pick up with all our friends in Probus once again.
Our thanks to David Antonjuk for steering the ship during our absence and to Bev Davison for keeping the Activities and Events moving along smoothly.
Its only six months till our next Annual General Meeting. At that time, most of the current committee members will resign from their roles, and will not be standing for re-election. Its time for other members to step up and take on the various leadership roles and take the club forward in new directions. Please think seriously about a leadership role.
You are welcome to come along to the committee meeting on Tuesday 22nd October to see what its all about. I promise you its very rewarding and will not consume too much of your time.
Looking through the Activity attendance sheets, its clear that numbers at most activities are steadily growing. The new Cards 500’s group is doing very well with 30 or more attending. Thanks to David Turner and Barbara Taylor.
Come along and join in whenever you can. Enjoy your Probus Club!

Important Notice – Attendance at Activities
As a matter of courtesy, please consider the Activity Organiser, and sign up and pay well in advance. It is very difficult for the organiser and the venue if most people have booked and paid well in advance, and a few people decide to turn up at the last minute. Restaurants and venues have often allocated tables, and squeezing extra people in is difficult. It also makes the job of accounting for the payments very confusing.
If you cannot attend a function that you have booked, please notify the Activity Organiser as early as possible so that the venue can be notified. If you have already paid, your payment will be refunded if the venue agrees to accept the reduction in bookings. This is covered in detail in our Activity Refund Policy.
Because of several recent events, we are forced to change our policy. For pre-paid events, if your money is not in the Activities Account by the organiser’s due date, you will not be able to join the group at the venue. You are of course free to make your own booking, but those who have paid in advance will have preference for seating, and if no space is available at the booked table you may have to sit separately.
Our Activity Organisers work hard to provide you with great activities. Please help make their job as easy as possible.

WPH&D PROBUS BOOK CHALLENGE
A total of 11 books was read by the group for August, bringing our total to 83 books for the year – 95.4% of our target.
August also brought Estelle Graham, Bev Davison and Julianne Stanton, then in September Julie Shenstone, to their personal goals, so now we are only 3 books from the group challenge of 87 books.
Obviously we all set very conservative challenges so a second challenge is now ready to see out the year – the Spring/Summer Challenge. If you’d like to join up for the new challenge, take a flyer from the back table at the next meeting, to find out how to do it, or search in Facebook for WPH&D Probus Book Challenge.
Our Facebook group is a closed group, so that you can only see posts if you are a member of this group. If you really don’t want to do Facebook, you can still set a challenge and keep me updated via email. You can also unjoin at any time.
Hardcopy, ebook, audio book, fiction or non-fiction, substantial children’s books all allowed.

A nice crowd of Probus Members attended the September Bunnings gardening session and heard a presentation from a Oasis Horticulture Pty Ltd representative. Oasis is the largest producer and distributor of bedding plants in Australia with a selection of more than 600 varieties of flowers, vegetables and herbs. We heard about new water saving devices as well as a broad range of new plants being developed (for example drought tolerant vegetable plants) As usual, following the presentation we all enjoyed our coffee and catch up chat at the Bunnings cafe.
The next Bunnings Garden Group session will be held on 10 October and will be a presentation on ‘Spring Bulbs’.
Due to the wonderful rain which finally arrived we had to postpone our planned visit to Mt Annan Botanical Gardens on Thursday 19 September. We’ll be rescheduling the outing sometime in October. Please let Sue or Lorenza know if you’d like the details of the new outing day.

Golf Group August 2019
Our day of fellowship, friendship and fun took place at Asquith Golf Course.
13 players attended on a bright and sunny day, until we at least finished lunch and then the storm hit.
Once again our exceptionally competent players were all rewarded with a prize.
Our next game will be at Carnarvon Golf Course on:
4th October 2019. 65-95 Nottinghill Rd, Lidcombe.
Our November Golf Outing is on Friday 1st November Course to be confirmed TBC.
To Change the format I propose to our golfers that we play an Ambrose. This will be conveyed to our current players for their feedback. Following with lunch afterwards in the clubhouse.
The sign-up sheet for 1st November will be on the activities table at the back of the meeting room at our monthly meeting. So add you signature and indicate if you would like to play, Ambrose or normal 18 and/or 9 holes, whether you need a cart and if you will be joining us for lunch.

Investment Group – 17th September
The Investment group met at the home of David Antonjuk with 10 members participating. We all enjoyed an excellent presentation by Ian Roberts on “Financial Ratios”.
Ian explained how the use of financial ratios can be very useful in understanding the differences between two similar companies who are both in the same business.
The financial performance of two well-known listed companies, Boral and CSR, were compared. The use of financial ratios provides an objective assessment both companies’ performance and market value.

At our September movie day our members chose between 2 movies:
- Angel Has Fallen
- Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan
Both movies were enjoyed by the members who attended them and we shared the highlights over lunch at Spears cafe.
Based on the shorts we saw before the September movies, 2 films stood out for all the members, ie:
Downton Abbey – “In the opening scene of the Downton Abbey movie, a letter makes its way from a desk in central London to a country house in Yorkshire ….”

Ad Astra - is a science fiction adventure film produced, co-written, and directed by James Gray. Starring Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler, and Donald Sutherland, it follows an astronaut who goes into space in search of his lost father, whose experiment threatens the solar system.
We’re hoping both movies will be screening at the same time to enable us to select our preferred movie and still be able to meet up for our usual lunch and catch up chat after the movie.
We’re planning on trying ‘Cosmo Café’ for our October movie day lunch venue. Members not interested in seeing a movie are welcome to join us for lunch - usually around 12.30.
Please let Sue or Lorenza know if you’d like to be added to the email list to be updated on the gardening and / or movie group activities.

Our next trip is to the Southern Highlands
As previously indicated finding suitable dates was a challenge, so contrary to my preference of departing on a Sunday and returning Wednesday it’s now Tuesday 15th to Friday 18th October (still 3 nights-4 days) and still providing flexibility for those that may desire a shorter or longer stay.
From my research our best accommodation option is the “Springs Mittagong” located adjacent to the Mittagong RSL Club being a modern motel with 51 spacious rooms.
Tariffs for “double” or “twin” $175.00/night ($190.00 on line) or $165.00 for a “single” superior room, however October is a very popular period and whilst we need to be reasonably quick to secure our accommodation, eg the Bowral “Tulip Time” festival is 24 Sept to 7 October. The motel still has a couple of extra rooms on hold for us and their website can be found HERE.
If you would like to go please email me with:
At last count we had eleven which is almost in line with my preference of twelve to sixteen (as per previous trips) with a maximum of twenty. We also had two maybe couples considering two nights due to other commitments, it’s not too late.
As requested the majority (not all, so if guilty please pay now) attending have now paid their deposits (based on three nights) into the club’s activity account and identified their payment with their Surname and Highlands:
It simply sought a “yes”, “no” or “maybe” to each potential activity or could elaborate and/or add a suggestion/s, requiring a reply by the end of this month/September allowing me time to prepare an indicative agenda based on member preferences.
An example of local attractions include (which ones appeal to you?):
Any suggestions, preferences or questions please give me a call.

Tennis Group Report- September 2019
We play every Monday morning at 9.00am at West Pennant Hills Sports Club. We are a small group but we do have fun.
Come along and join in a new activity, we would welcome more players. Your standard of play isn’t important, just come along and give it a go, you might surprise yourself and have fun.

Live Theatre September 2019
Billy Elliot:
We have 40 members and guests attending our theatre party to Billy Elliot the Musical – 10 Year Anniversary Tour on Wednesday 23 October 2019 at the Lyric Theatre at 7:00pm.
Bus pick-up will be at 5.45pm from West Pennant Hills Sports Club.
Please note: Tickets will be distributed on the bus.
Cirque du Soleil:
If you were at the last Probus meeting you would have heard about our new Theatre Party to Cirque du Soleil on Wednesday, 13 November 2019 8:00pm at the Entertainment Quarter Moore Park Sydney, under the Grand Chapiteau.
Cirque du Soleil will return to Australia from October 2019 with its most acclaimed touring show, Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities. Kurios is a tale in which time comes to a complete stop, transporting the audience inside a fantasy world where everything is possible. In this realm, the story is set in the latter half of the 19th century, reality is quite relative indeed as your perception of it is utterly transformed.
Response to the show has been very good with already 28 paid, despite a time clash with the clubs forthcoming New Zealand cruise. Therefore, we have just two tickets still available, so if you would like to attend please contact Robyn Bartle a.s.a.p. (first come first served basis)
Tickets for the evening (at group rates) inclusive of return coach travel from WPH Sports Club are $91.00 each.

Mid-West NSW Adventure April 2020
We have 28 people interested in the Mid-West of NSW trip planned for April 2020.
The plan is to visit a number of towns in the area, including perhaps Canowindra, Grenfell, Cowra, Forbes and Orange. Each has its own attractions including history, wineries. The Orange Food and Wine Festival runs from 27th March to 5th April. We have access to a working farm at Canowindra and for the more adventurous, there is also hot air ballooning at Canowindra. The trip would be 6 or 7 days.
Next step is to form a small committee to plan the trip and start making bookings. Please let me know if you can help.

Seventeen keen walkers met at Richard Webb Reserve, Aiken Road, WPH to wander along the flat wide fire track to reach the waterfall.
At the time there wasn’t much water flowing but we could all see its potential! We were then led to a hidden cave where unfortunately others had been there before us and left their mark.
On the return journey, 8 more adventurous members took the steep climb and descent through narrow rock crevasses observing numerous wild flowers and dare-devil bike tracks before joining the gentle fire track again. A short car trip took us to Café Saligna in Cumberland State Forest for light refreshments.
Thank you to Enio for a well-researched walk enjoyed by all.

Wine and Cheese – “Black” Friday 13th September
Another fun evening of “Wein, Weib und Gesang” (Wine, Woman, and Song), was held at the home of Susan and David Antonjuk with 20 plus members attending.
Thank you to all who again provided a wonderful selection of finger food and other delightful nibbles. Susan managed to quarantine her two black cats so the partying could go ahead without any fear of bad luck befalling anyone (see their photos below).
We all hope Jeanette Roberts’ delightfully painted “cat” face was not done with indelible ink. Thank you to all who attended, it was a wonderful evening.
