President's Report
Presidents Report – David Antonjuk, Vice President
With Tony and Glenda enjoying the sights, sounds and delights of Scotland, Europe and Canada, I have stepped in to cover for Tony during his absence.
Our Activity Leaders continue to organise a wide range of activities which members continue to enjoy. Over the first four months of our Probus club’s financial year (April to July), more than 60 activities have been held. If you are not actively participating in at least a couple of the many activities available to members, you may be missing out getting to know your fellow club members. I am always amazed at the many different backgrounds and experiences our members have to share. We are truly a fascinating bunch. Perhaps you are not sure if an activity is right for you, in which case, take the opportunity to talk to the activity leader to find out more about the activity to see if it is an activity you would enjoy. By coming to the monthly general meetings at the Cherrybrook Community Centre, you will have the opportunity to talk to the activity leaders.
This is your club and we operate only for the benefit of our members. Our activity leaders and the management committee all work for the benefit of all members – if you participate you will benefit from the “Fun, Friendship and Fellowship”.
Our Probus Club is yours to enjoy.

Guest Speaker At August Meeting - Richard Whitaker - East Coast Lows - Demons Of The Foreshores
Richard began working with the Bureau of Meteorology in 1971, aged twenty-four. A decade later, he was promoted to the role of Officer in Charge of the Facilities and Information section of the Bureau. He held this position for three years, before being promoted again to Senior Operational Forecaster in the Sydney bureau, Australia's largest.
In 1984, he was presented with an Australia Day Achievement Award for his work in the field of meteorology. In 1992, Whitaker became the New South Wales Manager for Special Services, dealing with exceptional circumstances and disaster recovery operations. He retired from the Bureau in 2002 after thirty-one years.[1]
During the final years of his tenure at the Bureau, between 1999 and 2001 Whitaker worked with the World Meteorological Organisation as a rapporteur for the Committee of Agricultural Meteorology.
Richard is partly credited with the initial development of precipitation charts for the Australian mass media. Such charts are now used throughout the print and electronic media to convey data about present and future rainfall in graphical form.
In his second year at the Bureau of Meteorology, 1972, he developed and authored a manual for aviation forecasting in the state of New South Wales, still used today. Whitaker also researched the correlation between sea surface temperatures in the Indian Ocean and rainfall in Australia, which is now used as a routine consideration in the production of seasonal rainfall outlooks.
Richard is now the chief meteorologist on The Weather Channel, having joined the station in 2004. On air, his first name is abbreviated to "Dick". He also presents numerous radio weather crosses to a selection of stations around Australia on a daily basis. Richard has authored or co-authored several books about weather and historical topics, having a particular interest in Natural Disasters.

Important Notice – Attendance at Activities
As a matter of courtesy, please consider the Activity Organiser, and sign up and pay well in advance. It is very difficult for the organiser and the venue if most people have booked and paid well in advance, and a few people decide to turn up at the last minute. Restaurants and venues have often allocated tables, and squeezing extra people in is difficult. It also makes the job of accounting for the payments very confusing.
If you cannot attend a function that you have booked, please notify the Activity Organiser as early as possible so that the venue can be notified. If you have already paid, your payment will be refunded if the venue agrees to accept the reduction in bookings. This is covered in detail in our Activity Refund Policy.
Because of several recent events, we are forced to change our policy. For pre-paid events, if your money is not in the Activities Account by the organiser’s due date, you will not be able to join the group at the venue. You are of course free to make your own booking, but those who have paid in advance will have preference for seating, and if no space is available at the booked table you may have to sit separately.
Our Activity Organisers work hard to provide you with great activities. Please help make their job as easy as possible.

WPH& Cherrybrook Rotary 2019 Trivia Night
On behalf of the Rotary Club of West Pennant Hills & Cherrybrook, we would like to thank all those WPH&D Probus trivia buffs for supporting our Trivia Night last Saturday Night (17th August), which is now in its 10th year. We had an equal record attendance with last year of about 240 people, which was a wonderful turnout. Around $6,500 was raised, all of which will go to assist with drought relief. This is a great result for these more challenging economic times. We also thank our sponsors and our raffle prize donors who also contributed to the success of the night. A large percentage of the money raised came from the raffle. The Club has once again absorbed all expenses from the trivia night so that every dollar raised will go to the farmers.
To ensure that all the money goes directly to distressed families, the proceeds from the night will be given to the Rotary Club of Coonabarabran to assist them with their Drought Relief work. Since last year’s trivia night, our club has donated around $24,000 and with the $6,500 raised from the trivia night, we will have donated a total of $30,500 to their drought relief program.
The Coonabarabran club is very proactive supporting farmers with numerous projects, including the distribution of pre-paid Visa Cards and food hampers to farmers whom they know are doing it tough. They have identified many more who would benefit from similar support. The visa cards are likely to be spent in the local community on some of life’s necessities to help with farmer’s wellbeing and so are also a way to share the money within the local community as equitably as possible.
Photos from the Trivia Night can be viewed on the 2019 Trivia Night web page HERE.
Please note that the tentative date for next year’s Trivia Night is Saturday 22nd August 2020.

A total of 9 books was read by the group for July, bringing our total to 72 books for the year - 83%% of our target.
Since then, Sue Calabrese reached her goal of 25 books, and has set a new challenge for the rest of the year. Seven more books have been since July too, bringing us up to 8 books away from the group challenge of 87 books. Five other members are now only one book from goal! That’s a lot of reading.
We can have a second challenge to see out the year – the Spring/Summer Challenge, so if you’d like to join up for the home stretch, take a flyer from the back table at the next meeting, to find out how to do it, or search in Facebook for WPH&D Probus Book Challenge.
Our Facebook group is a closed group, so that you can only see posts if you are a member of this group. If you really don’t want to do Facebook, you can still set a challenge and keep me updated via email. You can also unjoin at any time.
Hardcopy, ebook, audio book, fiction or non-fiction, substantial children’s books all allowed.

Cards (500) August 2019
The July Cards evening was held for the 1st time at the Dural Country Club on Friday 26th July. We had a great turnout and a good time was had by all. Although there were varying degrees of experience the more knowledgeable players were very helpful with the less experienced members. A few of us went for dinner beforehand and we agreed this was a great idea.
Next card night is Friday 23 August at 7.30 at the Dural Country Club.
Cost $5 per head. Please bring correct change if possible. Pay to David before playing, not at reception.
Remember to book ahead for dinner if eating beforehand. The restaurant is open from 6pm.
Looking forward to seeing everyone!

Historical Tour of Rookwood Cemetery - Wednesday 14th August
On the 14th August 30 Probus members carpooled to a ‘taster event tour’ at the Rookwood Cemetery. Our tour guide Mark Bundy entertained the group with tales of history , interesting people buried in the cemetery and his insights into burial procedures as a grave digger of 27 years. Members took the opportunity to ask a range of questions, then departed to the On Point Cafe for a delicious lunch before they became too engrossed.
Rookwood is recognised as the largest cemetery in the Southern Hemisphere and the last operating Victorian cemetery in the world. Consequently, there are a wide range of activities for the community to be involved in such as Sculpture exhibits, Photography competitions, Open Days and many more different tours which we may avail ourselves of in the future, depending on interest.

August Dining Out
After having no event in July, we have 26 members took part in an Indian Banquet at
Maharaja’s On Carmen.
Of the original 23 signed-up, only 14 attended. It was fortunate we had 12 others joined in.
Thank you to them that they have saved the evening as the dinner would have to be
cancelled due to minimum numbers required by the restaurant.
Anyway, we had a great night out. Food was excellent and in abundance. I think most of us
were half full after the entrees.
September Dining Out
It will be back at RYDE TAFE Ambassador Restaurant.
Details to follow shortly.

At the August Bunnings gardening session we heard an interesting presentation on ‘Richgro’ products which are design to enrich and condition soils for vegetables, flowers, tree, etc. This include the Richgro representative giving demonstration of how the products condition and enhance moisture retention in the soil. Following the presentation we all received a ‘RIchgro’ sample bag which included trial size packets of ‘Richgro Black Marvel Premium Rose Food”, a booklet so we could check on which product we be best for our various needs – eg vegetable crops, fruit trees, scrubs and flowering plants., As usual, following the presentation we all enjoyed our coffee and catch up chat at the Bunnings cafe.
The next Bunnings Garden Group session will be held on 12 September and will be a presentation by a representative from ‘Oasis’ product. Oasis Horticulture Pty Ltd is the largest producer and distributor of bedding plants in Australia with a selection of more than 600 varieties of flowers, vegetables and herbs sourced from the finest genetics worldwide. Additionally, its product portfolio of potted crops includes Chillies, Cyclamen, Tulips and other bulbs, Geraniums, Poinsettias and Chrysanthemums.
Additionally, the Gardening Group will be visiting the Mt Annan Botanical Gardens on 19 September. These Gardens predominantly focus on Australian natives and are on a 5 hectare parcel of land near Camden. We hope to organise carpooling to assist with travel to the gardens.
Please let Sue or Lorenza know if you’d be happy to drive to the gardens to enable them to organise car pooling for the day.
An email will be sent to the Gardening Group members with final details in the next week or so.

26th September - Putt Putt Golf at Thornleigh (cafe lunch optional)
31st October - DAY TRIP! Something special for the guys!
21st November- Lunch, 12pm Pennant Hills Hotel.
19th December - Christmas drinks at West Pennant Hills Sports Club.
I would welcome any ideas for next year so that we can plan some exciting activities and outings for 2020.

Our next trip is to the Southern Highlands
As previously indicated finding suitable dates has been a challenge, so contrary to my preference of departing on a Sunday and returning Wednesday it’s now Tuesday 15th to Friday 18th October (still 3 nights-4 days) and still providing flexibility for those that may desire a shorter or longer stay.
From my research our best accommodation option is the “Springs Mittagong” located adjacent to the Mittagong RSL Club being a modern motel with 51 spacious rooms.
Tariffs for “double” or “twin” $175.00/night ($190.00 on line) or $165.00 for a “single” superior room, however October is a very popular period and we need to be reasonably quick to secure our accommodation, eg the Bowral “Tulip Time” festival is 24 Sept to 7 Oct. The motel website can be found HERE. (I have deleted the budget motel option as no one has selected it)
As with any overnight trip my priority is to secure our accommodation and then we can consider our preferences as to suitable attractions, dining experiences etc.
If you would like to go please email me with:
As requested the majority (not all) attending have now paid their deposits (based on three nights) into the club’s activity account and identified their payment with their Surname and Highlands:
For those who would like to catch the train and utilise their Opal Card, this should be okay as my understanding is you can go as far south as Goulburn on the Opal Card, however this would have to be restricted to 50% (maximum) of our party to enable car-pooling during our stay.
Local attractions include (which ones appeal to you?):

Ten Pin Bowling August
After a two month break we had nine players on Friday 16 August along with two spectators Toni & Ken.
Max was a clear leader amongst the men, whilst Wendy had a magnificent second game where she nudged husband Bob by one pin, giving her bragging rights until next time
Also worthy of mention were the very good performances of Ken & Bruce.
Having worked up a thirst, players & spectators made their way to the local Tavern for a congenial drink, or two, where winners celebrated and losers drowned their sorrow.
Our next game is scheduled for Friday, 20 September.
As has been the case in the past, I will send a “sms” to all who have played previously, or expressed an interest in playing, a week out from game day asking those wishing to play to get back to me by “sms” by Monday morning so I can book lanes.
If you are not on my list & would like to participate please complete the Participation form at the next meeting, or contact me.

Thanks Greg for holding the fort while Bev & I were away.
We play at West Pennant Hills Sports Club every Monday and due to the cooler weather, we are starting at 9.00am.
Come along and join in a new activity, we would welcome more players. Your standard of play isn’t important, just come along and give it a go, you might surprise yourself and have fun.

Old Great North Road – World Heritage Walk
Tuesday 13th August
Fifteen of us set off to walk the Old Great North Road at Wisemans Ferry. Despite Andrew catching the wrong ferry (thanks Bob - we got to travel on 2 ferries that day & did the grand tour of Wiseman's Ferry!), we were able to set off up Devine’s Hill by eleven o’clock.
We were all highly impressed by the quality of the workmanship of the convict road builders from almost 200 years ago. The construction of the culverts to handle the rainwater and the work of the stonemasons to quarry and face the sandstone slabs for the road was amazing.
The road is very well signposted with descriptive plaques describing the construction and the working conditions for the convicts. This meant that it took us about 90 minutes to get to the top of the hill. At that time eight of the group left to return down the hill and resort to the Wisemans Ferry hotel for lunch.
That left seven of us to continue along Finch’s Line for the remaining eight kilometres back to the car park. We enjoyed fantastic views of the river and the township. Lunch was in a fabulous spot. We could understand why Governor Darling rejected Finch’s work in favour of the much more impressive Devines Hill track as the workmanship was much less impressive. However, it was a beautiful walk and we were all a bit weary by the time we got back to the ferry.
