President's Report

Tony Coote President
Hi fellow members
We had a great Christmas-In-July lunch on Wednesday 10th July at Brooklyn with 35 people coming along to join in the festivity. I went along to the walk in Bidjigal Reserve, West Pennant Hills on Tuesday 9th July. Thanks to Enio for organising the walk and the Stantons for much needed coffee and cake at their house when we finished. It was a perfect morning out.
Our Investment Group kicks off the new financial year with a meeting on 17th July. David Antonjuk is the new leader. On 26th July we have our first full cards evening at Dural Country Club. Please contact David Turner or Barbara Taylor for more information.
Our great club was formed 3 years ago this month. Its only purpose is to provide you with opportunities to enjoy Fun, Friendship and Fellowship. Your committee members and activity leaders put in a lot of work to provide you with these opportunities. Please support them and show your appreciation to them whenever you can.
The Cootes are off to Scotland, Europe and Canada and will return in time for the September Meeting.
David Antonjuk will act as President and Bev Davison will lead Activities and Events.
Enjoy your Probus Club!

Anyone with information about an illness, bereavement, physical disability or hardship affecting a member please advise me, in order for me to make contact and offer companionship and support. I’m available any time for a chat or a coffee.
Please be assured that all information provided will remain completely confidential.

Important Notice – Attendance at Activities
As a matter of courtesy, please consider the Activity Organiser, and sign up and pay well in advance. It is very difficult for the organiser and the venue if most people have booked and paid well in advance, and a few people decide to turn up at the last minute. Restaurants and venues have often allocated tables, and squeezing extra people in is difficult. It also makes the job of accounting for the payments very confusing.
If you cannot attend a function that you have booked, please notify the Activity Organiser as early as possible so that the venue can be notified. If you have already paid, your payment will be refunded if the venue agrees to accept the reduction in bookings. This is covered in detail in our Activity Refund Policy.
Because of several recent events, we are forced to change our policy. For pre-paid events, if your money is not in the Activities Account by the organiser’s due date, you will not be able to join the group at the venue. You are of course free to make your own booking, but those who have paid in advance will have preference for seating, and if no space is available at the booked table you may have to sit separately.
Our Activity Organisers work hard to provide you with great activities. Please help make their job as easy as possible.

WPH& Cherrybrook Rotary 2019 Trivia Night
Funds raised from this year’s Trivia Night will go to the Coonabarabran Rotary Drought Relief program that provides grants to drought affected families.
Since the end of August last year we have donated $23,000 ($7,000 from the 2018 Trivia Night) to the Rotary Club of Coonabarabran for them to use in their drought relief program that makes grants of up to $1000 to drought affected families on the basis of receipts or invoices for farm and living expenses.
Our visit to the area at the end of April showed there is still a real need for more drought relief funds.
As with last year, it will be an enjoyable and affordable night at only $20.00 per person (no extra costs re the trivia rounds) with the only optional extras being a raffle drawn at the end of the last round.

As at the end of June, we’ve reached 72%% of our target. Every member is now over half way to their goal with some very close. To date, we’ve read 63 books this year with a total of 13 books in June. Lots of good winter reading I think.
You are still welcome to join us. You can join and back date to the beginning of the year, or you can set a target for the rest of the year, then post as you complete each book. Targets set so far range from 6 to 25. Our Facebook group is a closed group, so that you can only see posts if you are a member of this group. Search for WPH&D Probus Book Challenge from your Facebook page. If you really don’t want to do Facebook, you can still set a challenge and keep me updated via email. You can also unjoin at any time.
Hardcopy, ebook, audio book, fiction or non-fiction, substantial children’s books all allowed.

Thank you to Julie Shenstone for hosting our last Book Club evening.
We finished reading Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey and I think the general consensus was that this was an enjoyable Australian story to read.
Our next book is The Little Coffee Shop of Kabul by Deborah Rodriguez.
As we meet bi monthly our next meeting is Thursday 5 September.
Anyone wishing to join the Book Club group can contact Bev Davison.
Cathy Turner on behalf of Bev Davison.

Cards (500) July 2019
Firstly I’d like to thank Tony and Glenda for hosting the Inaugural night of cards in their home.
We all had a great time playing. There were all levels of ability from the very experienced to those giving it a go for the first time. Thank you to Enio Dona for taking the time to run a training night prior to the 1st evening for those who wanted to learn or have a brush up on the game.
Due to the response of those interested in playing , and so that we can accommodate everyone who would like to play, we have been able to arrange for The Dural Country Club as a venue large enough for us. We only have to pay $5 per head for the number of people who turn up on the night. An email was sent out to everyone to email David to indicate if you were interested in playing and also to let him know if you are coming on the 26th. The Dural Country club will make sure that there are enough tables and chairs set up to accommodate the numbers who have indicated to David they are coming.
We will be playing in a room at the rear of the Auditorium.
We will supply the cards, please bring a pencil/pen and paper if you are going to score.
We will be starting to play promptly at 7.30.
Someone will come around to each table to collect $5 from each person. DO NOT pay the $5 at the reception on arrival.
There will be a break after approximately an hour and you can get a coffee, drink or snack.
Cards will finish at approximately 9.30 - 10pm.
We have 2 sets of Canasta cards, if anyone wishes to play Canasta rather than 500, it will be first in best dressed as to who gets the cards.
If you want to have dinner before we start, as it is a Friday night they can be busy so you must book. The restaurant is Italian, you can check out the menu on their website.
The club is open for dinner at 6pm.
Initially it would be good to have experienced and non experienced people playing together. After the break I would suggest people swap around to play with different people.
If you live within 5klms radius of the Dural Country Club you either need to join or be signed in by a member each time you go. It only costs $5.50 for 12 months and this gives you a 5% discount on your drinks and food. Outside the 5klms you can just sign in. If you are unsure of your proximity to the club, you can ring the club, tell them your street name and suburb and they will tell you if you are in or out of the 5klms radius.
If you have forgotten to email David to let him know you are interested in playing or you are coming on the 26th, please sign the sheet at the back of the room at the next meeting on the 26th July. This way we can make sure you receive all relevant information.
Looking forward to seeing you all then.

2nd July 2019 - Sydney University Heritage Tour

University of Sydney Heritage Tour Tuesday 2nd July
On Tuesday 2 July a group of ten of us enjoyed a most interesting guided tour of the historic quadrangle area of Sydney University. Frances, our guide from the Archaeology Department, explained the development of the buildings from 1850 including many of the features of its Gothic Revival architecture.
We moved into the Great Hall with its wonderful stained glass windows full of interesting characters and finally visited the Nicholson Museum, which houses the private collection of antiquities of Sir Charles Nicholson, the University's first Chancellor, who bequeathed his extraordinary collection to the University, a fraction only of which is currently on display. A new purpose built museum, the Chau Chuk Wing Museum, is under construction, which will house both the Nicholson collection, the natural history collection of the Macleay Museum and the University Art Gallery.
Our visit concluded with a most enjoyable lunch in the Courtyard Restaurant. Thanks again to Helen Games for another wonderfully organised outing.

Dining Out 30th June 2019 at Pho Sam Noodle House
23 of us gathered at the restaurant in Epping on a coldish evening.
The food was good but was unfortunately marred by the selected dessert not being available. It was substituted by a rather bland Goji Berry Agar Jelly which definitely is an acquired taste.
However, all in all, it was a very good evening of food and esprit de corps

The July Bunnings gardening session focused on suitable pots for various and different species and sizes of indoor and outdoor plants and the importance of fertilising and keeping the soil moist but not overwatering. Our recent luck continued with several of our members winning lucky ticket prizes before we all enjoyed our coffee and catch up chat at the Bunnings cafe.
The August Bunnings Garden Group session will be a presentation by a representative from ‘Richgrow’. Richgrow is an Australian company that produces organic and natural “pest and disease control products, fertilisers, soils, potting mixes and water wise garden goods”.
As most gardens are having a ‘winter break’ at present we’ll hold off until early September for our next Garden visit which will be a tour of Mt Annan Botanical Gardens. These Gardens predominantly focus on Australian natives and are on a 5 hectare parcel of land near Camden. We hope to organise carpooling to assist with travel to the gardens. While at the gardens we also hope to book a tour of the Australian Plant Bank.
The Australian Plant Bank, located at the Gardens, is a science and research facility. It houses a ‘seed bank’ and research laboratories that specialise in native plant conservation as a symbol of preservation of the natural cycle from the germination of seed to the propagation of forests. The building showcases the research and conservation of plant species and regeneration of eco-systems. Visitors are allowed views into the working sections of the building, including seeing researchers working within the laboratories.

Probus Golf Group July 2019
Our day of fellowship, friendship and fun did not take place due the heavens opening up and damping our enthusiasm. Mainly because I suspect our players missed out on their prizes.
Following a vote of our very enthusiastic group it was decided to focus on our next game: 2nd August is at North Ryde Golf Course.
An email for intention to play was sent out earlier this month and responded to enthusiastically. We have 18 players participating in the play and stay (lunch).
Prizes will be on again.
I should also mention that our golfers with a golf link # (having a handicap issued by the respective golf club) were invited to play in the Probus Northern Districts Golf Day at Castle Hill Country Club organised by the Glenhaven Probus Club. 03/09/2019. At this stage David Turner and Rob Clarke have put their names down to play. Other golfers meeting the criteria can still play, closing date is 29th July 2019. For now Good luck to David & Rob. More feedback in our next newsletter.
Our September outing is on Friday 6th September at Asquith Golf Club.
It will be the usual format of 18 hole groups starting at 8AM and 9 hole groups starting at 10 AM. Lunch afterwards in the clubhouse.
The sign-up sheet for September 6th will be on the activities table at the back of the meeting room at our monthly meeting. So add you signature and indicate if you would like to play, 18 or 9 holes, whether you need a cart and if you will be joining us for lunch.
Please contact Terry with regard to transport and/or changes as Tony Coote is travelling.

Lawn Bowls July 2019
On Wednesday 17/7/19, we had 6 starters at the Hills Bowling Club and played a game of triples.
The weather was quite warm and with no wind, it was a great day for bowls, and a couple of hours of fun.
Douglas Lam had his first game with us today and played very well – I am either a great coach or he has played the game before. I think it was the latter.
After bowls we retired to the bar for a well-earned cold drink.
As the weather becomes warmer, we hopefully can increase the number of players. At $10 for 2 hours it is good value and can be a lot of fun.
Bowls will not be on during August as Fran and I will be travelling. It will resume in September.

We were very lucky with our movie options this month with ‘Yesterday’ and ‘Red Joan’ running at the same time allowing our movie goers to choose either a mystery or a trip down memory lane with lots of Beatles songs. Both movies received good reviews from our regular movie group members. Following the movies we all met up and enjoyed a long chat over lunch.
Unfortunately, we’re unable to promote our August movie as Events Cinemas haven’t listed next month’s movies as yet. We’ll send out an email as soon as Events advises their August movies to enable us to make our selection.
Please let Sue or Lorenza know if you’d like to be added to the email list to be kept up to date on the gardening/movie group activities.

Our next trip is to the Southern Highlands
As previously indicated finding suitable dates has been a challenge, so contrary to my preference of departing on a Sunday and returning Wednesday it’s now Tuesday 15th to Friday 18th October (still 3 nights-4 days) and still providing flexibility for those that may desire a shorter or longer stay.
From my research our best accommodation option is the “Springs Mittagong” located adjacent to the Mittagong RSL Club being a modern motel with 51 spacious rooms and a separate 20 room budget motel.
Their website can be found HERE.
Tariffs for “double” or “twin” $175.00/night ($190.00 on line) or $165.00 for a “single” superior room and $140/night for the budget rooms, however October is a very popular period and we need to be reasonably quick to secure our accommodation, eg the Bowral “Tulip Time” festival is 24 Sept to 7 Oct.
As with any overnight trip my priority is to secure our accommodation and then we can consider our preferences as to suitable attractions, dining experiences etc.
If you would like to go please email me with:
Note: preferred numbers are twelve to sixteen (as per previous trips) with a maximum of twenty and if exceeded priority will be given to the first twenty who paid their deposit. At the time of writing we had ten, so it’s all go.
There will be an attendance list at our next meeting 24th July.
For those who would like to catch the train and utilise their Opal Card, this should be okay as my understanding is you can go as far south as Goulburn on the Opal Card, however this would have to be restricted to 50% (maximum) of our party to enable car-pooling during our stay.

Unfortunately my mother is moving into residential aged care following a fall and I will need to spend time in Queensland as she moves through this transition. I will also need to move her possessions out of her retirement village which is an accommodation change. Rosemary and I are also undertaking a lot of booked travel through to the end of the year. This will mean that my availability through to end of the year will be very limited and Bain has offered to fill in for the coordinator’s role for the remainder of the year when he is available.

Ten Pin Bowling July
Nine players participated on Friday, 21 June.
The highlights this time round on the male side was the excellent competition between David and Max. Each won a game and only 2 pins separated them over the 2 games.
On the ladies side there was little between Cathy & Hilda in game 1 and Glenda came out on top in game 2.
With the third Friday in the month of July falling in the school holidays I elected to cancel.
This means our next game will be on Friday, 16 August.
As has been the case in the past, I will send a “sms” to all who have played previously, or expressed an interest in playing, a week out from game day asking those wishing to play to get back to me by “sms” by Monday morning so I can book lanes.
If you are not on my list & would like to participate, please contact me.

Walk on Tuesday 11th July: Burraga Track in the Bidjigal Reserve
It was a lovely day for a walk, fourteen members completed the walk around Burraga Track in the Bidjigal Reserve.
The walk had plenty of steps (up & down) and a few river crossings. Great photos taken by Lynne & Tony. I thank everyone for making it a great day with a bit of fun. I especially thank Peter and Julianna Stanton for inviting us into their home for a lovely coffee & cake after the walk.

NEXT WALK: Old Great North Road – World Heritage Walk
Tuesday 13th August
Our next walk will be the Old Great North Road walk at Wisemans Ferry. This World heritage Walk features a convict built road overlooking the Hawkesbury River in Dharug National Park. There are historic remnants of the old Great North Road and a number of information signs along the way give a good insight into the construction and history of the road. You will see Hangman’s Rock, and the site of an old stockade for troublesome prisoners, as well as magnificent views to the river.
In order to cater for different levels of walkers, we will split this walk into two groups.
Group 1: Will complete the two hour, 3.6 kilometre round trip ascent of Devines Hill. This moderate grade section is along a well formed section of the old road past the visible remains of the road and Hangmans Rock. It involves walking to the top of the hill along well formed paths and then returning via the same track to the car-park. The round trip will take 2 hours.
Group 2: This is for the slightly more adventurous walkers in the group. We will complete the entire loop of about 9.5 kilometres which includes the first section (above) and then continues on to what is known as the Finchs Line Circuit. This circuit provides stunning views of the Hawkesbury River and Wisemans Ferry township. It also passes the historic Thomas James Bridge which is the oldest in-use bridge on mainland Australia. The convict built bridge was built in 1830 and was named after the overseer of the road party. This is a slightly more difficult section and is for the fitter members of the group. It will take around 4 hours to complete. It is not a difficult walk (slightly above moderate grade) but means close to a 10 kilometre hike in total to get back to the car-park.
Getting There: Wisemans Ferry is about a 50 minute drive from Cherrybrook. We then have to cross the vehicular ferry to get to the start of the walk. We will car-pool, departing Cherrybrook Community Centre car-park at 9.30 am. Group1 walkers will need to travel with other Group 1 walkers. Likewise Group 2.
