President's Report
Tony Coote President
Hi fellow members
I have noticed a positive trend with attendances at activities getting stronger. This week I went along to the Walking Group outing and had a very pleasant morning with 22 of our members. We walked the Knightsbridge Circuit and then had coffee at The Knightsbridge shops. Thanks to Bob Carritt for organising many different and interesting walks.
We have a great opportunity to learn from other clubs in our area. A meeting on 4th June will allow Activity Leaders and Guest Speaker Co-ordinators from our cluster group to get together with their counterparts from other clubs in The Hills and share ideas. Glenda and Douglas Lam will represent our club for Activities and Sue Hackett and Toni Smith for Guest Speakers.
All the activity leaders met this week to discuss the programme for 2019/20. The feeling is positive. We have enough activities to keep our members interested and involved. The program is filling up fast. Two new activity Groups are about to start up. These are Cards (500’s) and Yoga/Pilates. We have leaders for these activities. A number of other activities were suggested in the membership survey, but so far interest levels have been low.
Just a reminder to please take photos for the newsletter when you attend activities. “A picture speaks 1000 words”.
We have a very full activities calendar, thanks to the tireless efforts of our activity leaders. Please come along and join in as many activities as you can.
Enjoy your Probus Club!

Guest Speaker At May Meeting - Greg de Moore - TOM WILLS: An Australian Story
Greg de Moore is an Associate Professor of psychiatry at Sydney's Westmead Hospital. Born in Melbourne of parents who migrated to Australia from Sri Lanka, Greg has lived in Sydney for over 20 years. His book has won and been short-listed for numerous awards including the National Biography Award.
Thomas Wentworth Wills
A 5-year-old boy stood next to a tent. The landscape was western Victoria; the time was one of war between settlers and aborigines. The boy’s father wished great things for this first-born son; the boy was to succeed in the most unusual of ways. It’s a story that leads us into the heart of our nation. This is the story of Tom Wills.
The book is available for $20. Greg spoke at the Sydney Writers’ Festival on this book.

Important Notice – Attendance at Activities
As a matter of courtesy, please consider the Activity Organiser, and sign up and pay well in advance. It is very difficult for the organiser and the venue if most people have booked and paid well in advance, and a few people decide to turn up at the last minute. Restaurants and venues have often allocated tables, and squeezing extra people in is difficult. It also makes the job of accounting for the payments very confusing.
If you cannot attend a function that you have booked, please notify the Activity Organiser as early as possible so that the venue can be notified. If you have already paid, your payment will be refunded if the venue agrees to accept the reduction in bookings. This is covered in detail in our Activity Refund Policy.
Because of several recent events, we are forced to change our policy. For pre-paid events, if your money is not in the Activities Account by the organiser’s due date, you will not be able to join the group at the venue. You are of course free to make your own booking, but those who have paid in advance will have preference for seating, and if no space is available at the booked table you may have to sit separately.
Our Activity Organisers work hard to provide you with great activities. Please help make their job as easy as possible.

WPH&D PROBUS BOOK CHALLENGE
Our 8 members have committed to reading a total of 93 books this year and to date we have completed 36.6% of our target with 34 books read– up from 26% last month. Five of the group have reached 40% of their target, with the others not far behind. You are still welcome to join us. You can join and back date to the beginning of the year, or set a target for the rest of the year, then post as you complete each book. Targets set so far range from 6 to 25.
Hardcopy, ebook, audio book, fiction or non-fiction, substantial children’s books (currently listening to a marvellous book with my grandchildren called Wave Me Goodbye by Jacqueline Wilson – about 3 London children who are evacuated into the country at the beginning of the war. It’s a total eye-opener to the grandchildren to hear how kids coped in a time of which they have no knowledge.
If you’d like to join the challenge, then search out WPH&D Probus Book Challenge on Facebook, ask to join and I’ll okay it. If you’d also like to be part of the challenge but DON’T DO FACEBOOK, then send me your email address and you can still be part of it. I’ll keep track with you. Remember that this group is a closed group on Facebook – you can see the group, but you can’t see the posts unless you are a member. You can unjoin at any time.

Probus Cycling Group May 2019
9 of us ventured out on a beautiful May morning and drove to Fivedock. We circled Iron Cove twice and had a very pleasant morning tea at a café along the way.
The headwinds were a challenge, but the scenery more than made up for the hard going.
This is a great track for cycling and walking and would be a possible combined outing for our walking, cycling and photography groups.
We are yet to finalise the ride on 5th June. I will email the group with details.

Bryan Powyer’s Historical Tour of Parramatta - Tuesday 30th April
The Secrets of the River Bank
30th April 2019 The Secrets of the River Bank Historical Tour
Once again, our very own historian, Brian Powyers, excelled himself as he guided us along the Parramatta River pointing out remnants of the past and telling us the stories behind them.
We started our walk at Hambledon Cottage in Hassall Street, walked down to the Parramatta River to Queens Wharf Reserve and then followed the river to Parramatta Park and Old Government House.
It was comforting to see that even in the middle of the ever expanding high-rise buildings that now dominate the skyline, history is being preserved as a result of the enthusiasm and hard work of National Trust members such as Brian.
We had a delicious lunch in our own private room at Lachlan’s restaurant in Old Government House.

Discovery Day at CMRI - Thursday 23rd May
Our guest speaker at our Probus meeting in April, Jennifer Philps, introduced the topic of genetics and genes.
This visit to CMRI will enable us to meet scientists in their laboratories and find out about diseases such as cancer, epilepsy and genetic disorder and the research that is being conducted around the world.

We had a wonderful turn up for the May Bunnings Session, which was a very informative talk on the benefits / necessity of healthy soil to have healthy vegetables, flowers and plants in general. Our recent luck continued with several of our members winning lucky ticket prizes before we all enjoyed our coffee and catch up chat at the Bunnings cafe.
As we head into winter it gives us time away from the constant pruning, clipping etc of the warmer months. To let us enjoy this bit of free time, we’re planning a visit to the ‘Lilian Fraser Garden’. The Lilian Fraser Garden is ideal for leisurely walks, where we can wander around the gardens and enjoy rare and unusual plants, as well as 34 different bird species that the garden attracts. The garden features several different magnolias and hydrangeas, a range of abutilons, a smoke bush, glorious camellias, and trees such as pink and white dogwoods, handkerchief tree, huge metasequoia tree, and a fringe tree, while different bulbs and perennials fill the under storey.
The garden is located at the corner of Bellamy &, Laurence St, Pennant Hills. Following the morning of touring the gardens we’ll take the short drive to the West Pennant Hill Sports Club -103 New Line Rd, West Pennant Hills for lunch.
Date: 11 June (Tuesday) 10.00am
Address: cnr Bellamy & Laurence St Pennant Hills
Please let Sue or Lorenza know if you’d like to join the outing to ensure you receive ongoing details (eg wet weather alternatives, etc)
Also, please let Sue or Lorenza know if you’d like to be added to the email list to be updated on gardening activities.

Investment Group May 2019
As we head towards the end of our 1st game (winner declared at our 27th June meeting), it appears from feedback received that we will need to revamp our model.
The current game is relatively complex in its administration and very work intensive for the Team leaders and their deputies.
Some current members have already stated that they thoroughly enjoyed the education component and the game environment but don’t see themselves going ‘again’.
Therefore, after caucusing with current team leaders, we propose to offer an alternative format of the Group’s activity revolving around the ASX Sharemarket Game.
The ASX runs 2 games a year each lasting 15 weeks. Once you register for the game, your account is credited with 50,000 pretend dollars, the only action you have to undertake is issue buy and sell orders. Everything including share lists with daily, cash statements, relevant news and bulletins on your chosen shares is provided in your ‘dashboard’.
Those members who would prefer to join with others to form a syndicate because they are uncomfortable to play the game by themselves, can do so.
It is intended that we will have periodic coffee mornings for group members to discuss the game and record our relevant scores.
To finalise the game at the end of financial year, we will meet for lunch at a club on 27th June, celebrate the winners and start planning for the next game.

Lawn Bowls May 2019
Seven of us turned up at the Hills Bowling Club for a game of bowls on Sunday 28th April with the sun shining & no wind –it was a beautiful day for bowls. Due to the odd number, Fran became our iced water getter & jack re-spotter for the day – thanks Fran.
The Oldies then challenged the Youngies to a game of triples – it was a lot of fun & eventually after 2 hours, the Oldies turned out to be the winners. The final score will remain unprinted, for as the old saying goes – what happens on the green, stays on the green.
We then had a couple of cold ones to finish off a great afternoon.
Next Lawn Bowls Day will be held at the Hills Bowling Club on Sunday 26th May. Bowls will commence at 1.00pm – flat soled shoes or socks to be worn & bowls will be supplied. Cost is $10pp.

We were very lucky with our movie options in May with several good movies being screened. As a result the movie group split up with some of our Group attending ‘Aftermath’ and others seeing ‘Top End Wedding’ and ‘The Chaperone’.
All movies received good reviews from our regular movie goers. Following the movies we all met up and enjoyed a long chat over lunch.
Unfortunately, we’re unable to promote our June movie as Events Cinemas haven’t listed their June movies as yet.
We’ll send out an email as soon as we receive the updated Events list of movies to enable us to select a movie / movies for June

Photography Interest Group May 2019
The Photography Interest Group has a "focus" for the month in which the members bring some photos to our meetings and we discuss how they can be improved. The theme for this month was interesting and experimental photographs and some of the interest group's photos are attached. For the next meeting the focus for our group is on portrait photographs.
We are planning to have a portrait workshop on the Wednesday night after the meeting (May 22) or the following Wednesday (May 29). Bain Shenstone has kindly agreed to let us use his garage which is set up for portrait photographs. Please call me if you would like to attend.
Our group attempts to have an outing each month (weather permitting) and we have several interesting sites to go to take some photographs. All outings finish with a coffee.
Our next meeting will be at 7:00 pm on June 5. The venue will be advised as I will not be able to make this meeting.
For the regulars please bring some photos and for any new people just come along and enjoy the company and listen as it will assist you in how to improve your photography skills. If you feel comfortable bring some photos on a memory stick to show the group.
We will also be discussing our next photo shoot outing.

Tennis Group Report- May 2019
Bev & I are away for 11 ½ weeks so the Tennis group will be pretty thin on the ground, with Greg Holmes holding the fort.
We play at West Pennant Hills Sports Club every Monday at 8.30am.
Why not come along and join in a new activity, we would welcome more players. Your standard of play isn’t important, just come along and give it a go, you might surprise yourself and have fun.

Tuesday 14th May - Knightsbridge Circuit
Twenty three of us completed the walk around the significant bushland corridor in Fred Caterson Reserve between Castle Hill and Glenhaven. We covered a distance of about 5 kilometres on a beautiful day over well made tracks. It took us about one and a half hours to reach our ultimate destination – the coffee shop at Knightsbridge shopping centre.
We didn’t lose anyone and most people were surprised at the extent of the reserve and the fauna that it supports. We are lucky to have such untouched bushlands virtually in our backyard.
The next couple of walks will be organised by Enio Dona, while Wendy and I are travelling around the UK and through Jordan.
