President's Report
Tony Coote President
Hi Fellow Members
At the April Meeting, Ian Roberts will report back to the club on the membership survey. Over 70 members responded to the survey and the results were generally very positive. That means a happy club! But there is still some work to do and Ian will go through that in detail.
I would like to thank Bev Dona and Helen Games who have stepped up to help out while Cathy Turner and Sue Hackett are travelling through Morocco and Spain.
Your committee will establish a new policy to cover sign up and payment when planning to attend activities. We have experienced difficulties at some recent events where attendance numbers were restricted. More on that at the General Meeting.
With the new Probus Year, we sadly are farewelling six members who will not be renewing their membership. But we will also be welcoming five new members and these people will be inducted at our May meeting.
We have a very full activities calendar, thanks to the tireless efforts of our activity leaders. Please come along and join in as many activities as you can.
Enjoy your Probus Club!
Tony

Guest Speaker At April Meeting - Jennifer Philips - CHILDREN’S MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE
JENNIFER PHILPS BSc. Hons, Dip Ed
Community Relations Manager
CHILDREN’S MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE
Jennifer started a teaching career in Glasgow in 1965 after majoring in genetics at Glasgow University.
After her marriage, to a veterinarian, Jennifer and her husband set off to Uganda on the Overseas Development Program where she taught in a remote village on the Sudan border. These were turbulent times in Uganda, so they ventured into the safer climate of South Africa where they stayed for 20 years raising three daughters. Jennifer taught in many parts of South Africa and immigrated to Australia in 1987 and continued her teaching career at Barker College.
In 1992, she had a sea change, leaving teaching to join a bio-medical company which fortuitously led her, a year later, to join Children’s Medical Research Institute as Community Relations Manager. The intention was to continue for a few years but 25 years later she still has “the best job in the world” giving her the ability to renew her avid interest in genetics and medical research.
An added bonus was to assist in the fantastic work carried out by our fund-raising committees as well as being involved with the Jeans for Genes Campaign since its inception.
Her talk today will cover the most recent and exciting research achieved at the Children’s Medical Research Institute

Welfare
Being a member of our Probus Club fills a gap for us retirees. It gives us a sense of purpose and community. Please take advantage of your club and its activities. It’s a great opportunity to socialise, and getting out and about will make you feel good.
It is important, as members of Probus that we care for the welfare of one another. Anyone with information about an illness, bereavement, physical disability or hardship affecting a member please advise me, in order for me to make contact and offer companionship and support. I’m available any time for a chat or a coffee.
Please be assured that all information provided will remain completely confidential.
Terry Ridge is assisting with welfare. He is another point of contact and will be available if I am absent from the club.

Important Notice – Attendance at Activities
As a matter of courtesy, please consider the Activity Organiser, and sign up and pay well in advance. It is very difficult for the organiser and the venue if most people have booked and paid well in advance, and a few people decide to turn up at the last minute. Restaurants and venues have often allocated tables, and squeezing extra people in is difficult. It also makes the job of accounting for the payments very confusing.
If you cannot attend a function that you have booked, please notify the Activity Organiser as early as possible so that the venue can be notified. If you have already paid, your payment will be refunded if the venue agrees to accept the reduction in bookings. This is covered in detail in our Activity Refund Policy.
Because of several recent events, we are forced to change our policy. For pre-paid events, if your money is not in the Activities Account by the organiser’s due date, you will not be able to join the group at the venue. You are of course free to make your own booking, but those who have paid in advance will have preference for seating, and if no space is available at the booked table you may have to sit separately.
Our Activity Organisers work hard to provide you with great activities. Please help make their job as easy as possible.

WPH&D PROBUS BOOK CHALLENGE
Our 8 members have committed to reading a total of 93 books this year and to date we have completed 36.6% of our target with 34 books read– up from 26% last month. Five of the group have reached 40% of their target, with the others not far behind. You are still welcome to join us. You can join and back date to the beginning of the year, or set a target for the rest of the year, then post as you complete each book. Targets set so far range from 6 to 25.
Hardcopy, ebook, audio book, fiction or non-fiction, substantial children’s books (currently listening to a marvellous book with my grandchildren called Wave Me Goodbye by Jacqueline Wilson – about 3 London children who are evacuated into the country at the beginning of the war. It’s a total eye-opener to the grandchildren to hear how kids coped in a time of which they have no knowledge.
If you’d like to join the challenge, then search out WPH&D Probus Book Challenge on Facebook, ask to join and I’ll okay it. If you’d also like to be part of the challenge but DON’T DO FACEBOOK, then send me your email address and you can still be part of it. I’ll keep track with you. Remember that this group is a closed group on Facebook – you can see the group, but you can’t see the posts unless you are a member. You can unjoin at any time.

April has been a busy month for travellers so a smaller group of stay- at -homers met at Bunnings Castle Hill to learn about geraniums from Gary of Geranium Cottage. We learnt a lot about cutting back messy, leggy geraniums in order to get good, healthy growth. Pots were suggested as a better option for growing them as geraniums do not like clay, wet soil. A number of our members happily took a pot home being lucky ticket winners.
Did you know that you can get great monthly tips on what needs doing in the garden at bunningsdiaries.com.au and also from the free Bunnings monthly magazine? BARGAIN!!!! Next meeting will be on Thursday 9th May, 10.30am for 11.00am start. Topic yet to be announced. |

Our movie group met on Tuesday 2 April. With a paucity of films available we decided to view Sometimes Always Never rather than Hotel Mumbai. I think this was the worst movie that we have seen so far. It was certainly good for a laugh with relief when it was over and it did create some conversation over a coffee and a bite to eat. Can’t win them all!!!
Next movie day will be on Tuesday, May 7. However, we will inform members via email at a closer date with availability of a suitable film.

Blue Mountains, Sunday 7th to Wednesday 10th April 2019.
The general consensus was to take the “Bells Line of Road” from Richmond to Bell, then to Mount Victoria and the Great Western Highway (GWH) to Wentworth Falls. On Wednesday we took the GWH to Springwood and then Hawkesbury Road to Richmond and home to complete a round trip.
Our accommodation was Falls Mountain Retreat, Wentworth Falls (WFs),
Sunday
Most arrived at The Blue Mountains Botanic Garden, Mount Tomah for morning tea and to enjoy the magnificent gardens. Then onto Blackheath with its various attractions, including Rhododendron Gardens; the old Victory Theatre now an antique centre set amongst the local shops and galleries; Govetts Leap and Evans Lookouts over the Grose Valley, and a great little pie shop for lunch.
After checking into our accommodation, we had dinner at the Basil Nut Café & Restaurant, Katoomba, a fabulous Asian eatery.
Monday
Following an early morning walk for some, we all visited Scenic World at Katoomba. Most enjoyed the trill and views from the Skyway, Walkway (including sculptures exhibition), Cableway and Railway plus a large shop/café. Then a scenic drive from Blackheath through a beautiful rainforest and sandstone escarpments down into the Megalong Valley for lunch at the Tearooms. Back up the escarpment to the refurbished Hydro Majestic at Medlow Bath for a fabulous one hour guided tour.
We concluded the day with pre-dinner drinks at the historic Carrington Hotel, Katoomba, and then enjoyed dinner at a Pizzeria and Family Restaurant.
Tuesday
Again a few started the day with a local early morning walk. Then Leura Mall, with a wide choice of boutique shops and cafés for our retail therapy. After which various members visited one or more of the following:
The afternoon was free to do more walks, a rest, or more of the above options.
Following some pre-dinner drinks at Bev and Bob’s apartment backing the forest, we enjoyed our farewell dinner at The Alexandria Hotel, Leura.
Wednesday
A morning walk again for some, before departing our retreat around 9.30. On the way home some visited the Norman Lindsay Gallery, Falconbridge and/or the Hawkesbury Panorama Lookout, Winmalee. One couple went home via Bells Line of Road. Another took an extra day and detoured via Oberon and Bathurst.
I would to thank all those who contributed to making this another great Opal Card trip. For the record, one couple did actually utilise their opal card!

- Everglades Leura, a National Trust property with master gardens and views over Jamison Valley.
- Wentworth Falls Lake WFs, 1 km circuit, not far from the local shops
- Leura Cascades and Wentworth Falls from Fletchers Lookout
- The Blue Mountains Cultural Centre, Katoomba

Photography Group April 2019
A select few (who weren’t away on holidays) members of the Photography group met at Bain Shenstone’s residence with Rob Clarke being our “phone a friend”.
We discussed Black and White photography and reviewed photos brought taken by the group and selected a number for entry into the Castle Hill photography club competition.
We reviewed the photos entered in the last competition and the comments made by the internationally ranked judge. We also reviewed photos taken at the Penrith Whitewater international event.
The field trips to the Boothtown aqueduct was postponed because of bad weather and ironically the backup location of Balaka Falls was also “washed out”.
The theme for the next photography meeting will be Creative/Experimental Photography.
We have freedom to do whatever we want as long as we add a creative aspect in your image. You can think of double exposures, zoom or panning, a fabricated endless. The challenge is to try something new. All the elements used in the image must be the author's own work.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday May 1st, venue TBA

Tennis Group Report- April 2019
Bev & I have missed 3 weeks this month due to a holiday, a Probus trip and grandchildren commitments during school holidays, so our group has been even smaller than usual.
We play at West Pennant Hills Sports Club every Monday at 8.30am.
Why not come along and join a new activity, we are only a small group and we would welcome more players. Your standard of play isn’t important, just come along and give it a go, you might surprise yourself and have fun.

COCKATOO ISLAND - Tuesday 16th April
Nineteen of us caught the Rivercat from Rydalmere to Cockatoo Island for our guided tour around the island. Our guide Carol was highly informative and gave us a thorough description of the island colourful past.
Some of the original old sandstone buildings still remain from its time as a convict prison. It is now commonwealth property and they are promoting it as a tourist destination. Several of the old dry-docks remain and many of the old outbuildings, cranes and workshops still stand as a reminder of its days as a major shipbuilding and repair site. It was a magnificent Autumn day and we all enjoyed the “stroll” and the coffee and snack afterwards.
Next Walk - Tuesday 14th May - Knightsbridge Circuit
This is a local walk through the significant bushland corridor in Fred Caterson Reserve between Castle Hill and Glenhaven. This area is rich in birdlife and diverse local flora. It covers a distance of about 5 kilometres and is graded easy to moderate. Parts of the walk are paved, some is along fire trails and a small part is along rough bush tracks. It will take about two and a half hours to complete.
Arrangements: We will start at the Knightsbridge Shopping Centre at 9.30am. There is ample parking, and we will finish at the same place. There is a very good coffee shop at the shopping Centre for those who wish to imbibe afterwards.
