President's Report
Tony Coote President
Hi Fellow Members. This is the final newsletter for the current Probus year. The year has flown by with so much to keep us active and interested. So many great activities including the Pacific Cruise, the Canberra Trip and the Hunter Valley Trip. The investment group started up and all the other activity groups continued to grow in attendance. It always amazes me how the Activity Leaders come up with so many new and interesting things to do.
I would like to thank all the committee members, activity leaders and club members for their support and commitment to our club over the last twelve months. It has been a pleasure to work with you all.
On March 27th we have the Annual General Meeting of our club. Colin McGowan has kindly agreed to chair the meeting which involves election of office bearers for the coming 12 months and the passing of a number of resolutions required to set us up for the coming year.
Please come along.
In April a group will be going off to the Blue Mountains for 4 days with Max and Lynne Henderson. We also have the Anzac Day BBQ on 25th April at Cumberland State Forest.
Don’t forget to return your completed Membership Survey to Ian Roberts before or on the Annual General Meeting on 27th March. Have your say and help us to make our club even better! Thanks to Ian Robert, Keith Ball and Cathy Turner for compiling and issuing the survey.
Come along and join in as many activities as you can. Enjoy your Probus Club!

Guest Speaker At April Meeting - Jennifer Philips - CHILDREN’S MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE
JENNIFER PHILPS BSc. Hons, Dip Ed
Community Relations Manager
CHILDREN’S MEDICAL RESEARCH INSTITUTE
Jennifer started a teaching career in Glasgow in 1965 after majoring in genetics at Glasgow University.
After her marriage, to a veterinarian, Jennifer and her husband set off to Uganda on the Overseas Development Program where she taught in a remote village on the Sudan border. These were turbulent times in Uganda, so they ventured into the safer climate of South Africa where they stayed for 20 years raising three daughters. Jennifer taught in many parts of South Africa and immigrated to Australia in 1987 and continued her teaching career at Barker College.
In 1992, she had a sea change, leaving teaching to join a bio-medical company which fortuitously led her, a year later, to join Children’s Medical Research Institute as Community Relations Manager. The intention was to continue for a few years but 25 years later she still has “the best job in the world” giving her the ability to renew her avid interest in genetics and medical research.
An added bonus was to assist in the fantastic work carried out by our fund-raising committees as well as being involved with the Jeans for Genes Campaign since its inception.
Her talk today will cover the most recent and exciting research achieved at the Children’s Medical Research Institute

Welfare
Being a member of our Probus Club fills a gap for us retirees. It gives us a sense of purpose and community. Please take advantage of your club and its activities. It’s a great opportunity to socialise, and getting out and about will make you feel good.
It is important, as members of Probus that we care for the welfare of one another. Anyone with information about an illness, bereavement, physical disability or hardship affecting a member please advise me, in order for me to make contact and offer companionship and support. I’m available any time for a chat or a coffee.
Please be assured that all information provided will remain completely confidential.
Terry Ridge is assisting with welfare. He is another point of contact and will be available if I am absent from the club.

Important Notice – Attendance at Activities
As a matter of courtesy, please consider the Activity Organiser, and sign up and pay well in advance. It is very difficult for the organiser and the venue if most people have booked and paid well in advance, and a few people decide to turn up at the last minute. Restaurants and venues have often allocated tables, and squeezing extra people in is difficult. It also makes the job of accounting for the payments very confusing.
If you cannot attend a function that you have booked, please notify the Activity Organiser as early as possible so that the venue can be notified. If you have already paid, your payment will be refunded if the venue agrees to accept the reduction in bookings. This is covered in detail in our Activity Refund Policy.
Because of several recent events, we are forced to change our policy. For pre-paid events, if your money is not in the Activities Account by the organiser’s due date, you will not be able to join the group at the venue. You are of course free to make your own booking, but those who have paid in advance will have preference for seating, and if no space is available at the booked table you may have to sit separately.
Our Activity Organisers work hard to provide you with great activities. Please help make their job as easy as possible.

Probus Book Challenge
NEW ACTIVITY - The Probus Book Challenge
The Probus Book Challenge is open to all WPH & D Probus members. The challenge is to commit to completing a number of books over the calendar year - you choose the number. More is great, and can set you up to meet a higher achievement the next year.
Over the year, as you finish reading a book, number (very important), post the title and author, and share your thoughts about the book - a few words, or many. You can upload a photo of the book as the title and author if you wish. Comment on other’s posts too.
Fiction, non-fiction, books of short stories (counted as one), audio books, book club books, hard copy or eBook are all a part of this challenge, but no to textbooks, journals, magazines or newspapers.

Tamworth Country Music Festival 2020
Tamworth Country Music Festival 2020
Following last month’s meeting, 28 people (12 couples and 5 singles) registered their interest in going to the Tamworth Country Music Festival next year.
I spoke with On Course Tours and have asked them to put aside 15 rooms for us – a few more could be added if necessary. Final payment for the tour would be required at least 30 days before the tour starts. The dates are leaving Sydney by bus on Friday 17th January and returning Tuesday 21st January. This year, the cost of the trip was $1250 per person. That includes the bus, driver and assistant, lunch and morning tea on the way up and back, accommodation, breakfast each day, 2 shows and the use of the bus if required for transport while there. We also dropped into the Arrowfield horse stud farm at Scone on the way back.
The music festival organisers will not have their schedules and availability of artists finalised until around December so we will not be able to see who is playing where until then.

FRAN FITZPATRICK - MY SUMMER HOLIDAY - ANTARCTICA
Below is my article titled Summer Holiday. I wrote the article in response to a request from The Active Retirees Magazine to write 200 words on 'Your most memorable holiday'.
I didn't win the competition but I did enjoy writing the article and the actual holiday was amazing. In fact, squeezing the whole adventure into 200 words was the biggest challenge.
The sun is shining, the air is clear, the temperature is minus 2o centigrade and I am in Antarctica. I am on a mission to fulfil a ‘bucket list’ trip and a bit of cold weather won’t hold me back. I join our Russian ice-breaker with 51 other passengers and very soon we are in zodiacs, all kitted out, ready to step on to the Antarctic Peninsula for the first time.
Our first sighting of a waddle of penguins brings excitement to our group. The penguins march in line, like nuns hurrying to Church, and we are enthralled by their antics as they squabble and chatter among themselves.
Just time before dinner to don our swimming suits for a polar plunge and it’s minus 10C . A whole new experience in ‘cold’.
Our next zodiac trip is a scenic cruise around the icebergs and we have the chance to see the sleek coats of the fur seals and crabeater seals with their dreamy eyes, sun-baking on the ice floes. The whales are out for a swim today and we watch as they show us their tricks.
The birds of Antarctica – skuas, cormorants, albatross - are clamouring around the ship to lead us to another shoreline and another adventure.
It’s time to return to our lives in Australia with memories of our best summer holiday ever.

Probus Cycling Group March 2019
Today’s ride was a bit different from what we originally planned. We started at 7AM at the Rydalmere Ferry Wharf. Instead of going east towards Meadowbank and Homebush Bay, we headed west and ended up eventually at Parramatta Jail. A pleasant ride along the river and through the grounds of the hospital adjacent to Parramatta Park. We had 10 riders in the group.
We were almost arrested for going inside the Linen Service grounds to have a look around. But with a bit of smooth talking we avoided going to jail and continued back to Parramatta Park and a well-earned coffee and breakfast.
On Wednesday 3rd April, we plan to finally do the ride from Gosford to Woy Woy. It’s a very pretty ride along the waterfront and there are several places where we can stop for photo ops and also coffee. We will meet at the Cherrybrook Community Centre at 7AM and try to carpool where possible

St Patrick’s Irish Luncheon Wednesday 13th March The Fiddler
A lively group of 29 Probus members, donning various shades of green clothes, wigs and sunglasses, enjoyed the Irish Lunch at The Fiddler.
The traditional Irish entertainment was lively and funny and the dancers fantastic. We had a good old fashioned sing song and a few couldn’t resist a merry jig (and Helen met a real leprechaun!)

Recently our Gardening and Photography Groups had a joint day out to the Sydney Botanical Gardens to see “Plants with Bite”, the most recent exhibition at the Calyx (please see the Photography Groups update, where I’m sure you’ll see some really stunning photos from the day)
Additionally, we met at the Bunnings Garden Club and heard a presentation on the various uses and purposes of “boys toys” – ie every type of spade, shovel, rake, pitch fork, blower, mulcher, etc, etc. Two of our members won lucky number prizes and following the presentation we all collected our free plants and enjoyed our usual free cappuccinos and tested the comfort of the outdoor settings, while we sat around having a chat.
Next month’s Bunnings Gardening Group presentation will be given by the owner of “Geranium Cottage” giving us details of all aspects of geraniums.
Please let Sue or Lorenza know if you’d like to be added to the email list to be updated on gardening activities.

We will be continuing our discussion on Managed Funds and have a think tank on future items of interest that members would like addressed.
Remembering that all teams commenced with a pool of $500,000 imaginary dollars and at each meeting the teams have a breakout to decide strategies and select their buy and sell moves for the month.
We would always welcome new starters at any time for the Group or, if you wish, just to get a feel for what happens, come along for a coffee or tea and watch the morning’s proceedings.
See you there.

Lawn Bowls February 2019
We have 9 starters for Sunday 17th Feb at the Hills Bowling Club & hopefully the weather will be kind & not too hot.
There will be bowls in March, however, as I will be away for most of the month, it will not happen until Sunday 31st.
I will be at the March meeting & have bowls attendance sheet available. Prior to the meeting, I will contact regular players to find out if we have sufficient players to make a booking.
Bowls will once again be at the Hills Club in Baulkham Hills, so sign up for 2 hours of fun for only $10.

There’s been several good movies on recently, making it hard to pick one movie for us to all see – so last month we decided on 2 movies for our members to pick from, with the plan of meeting after the movies to enjoy lunch together. The movies were: ‘A Dogs Life’ and ‘On the Basis of Sex’. Both movies were really enjoyable – but neither came with a warning to bring our tissues with us, which several of us needed at the end of each movie.
Our next movie day will be on 2 April, and the movie will be “Hotel Mumbai”, which is based on the true story of the Taj Hotel terrorist attack in Mumbai, where hotel staff risk their lives to keep everyone safe as people make unthinkable sacrifices to protect themselves and their families. Cast includes: Dev Patel, Nazanin Boniadi, and Tilda Cobham-Hervy.
Please let Sue or Lorenza know if you’d like to be added to the email list to be updated on movie days.

Our next trip;
Blue Mountains, Sunday 7th to Wednesday 10th April 2019.
For this Blue Mountains experience we are focusing on the popular Wentworth Falls, Leura and Katoomba district. We have numerous members car-pooling with only one couple using their Opal cards to catch the train.
As with any overnight trip we have locked in our accommodation, being the Falls Mountain Retreat, Wentworth Falls.
With deposits paid we now require final payments (no later than the end of March), the balance being $197/couple/twin share apartment ($98.50/person) or $397/single person apartment. NB we all paid a $200pp deposit (single or double/twin share) and each apartment is $597 for three nights. Please identify your payment with your Surname and Blue.
We have had a meeting (fourteen members) to flesh out some additional ideas which will enhance our trip and I’m in the process of preparing an indicative itinerary. This doesn’t necessitate we have to tour as a group, just various attractions which may be of interest, so we may all visit some and break into smaller groups for others, whatever.
Any suggestions or questions please give me a call.

Photography Group March 2019
The Photography Interest Group has a "focus" for the month in which the
members bring some photos to our meetings and we discuss how they can be
improved. The theme for this month was scapes and some of the interest
group's photos are shown below. For the next meeting the focus is on
monochrome (black and white) photographs. There are guidelines on what a
monochrome photo is and also on what to look for in taking a monochrome
photograph. Please contact Rob Clarke if you would like a copy of the guidelines.
Our group also has an outing each month (weather permitting) and for this
month we had to cancel the Boothtown aqueduct which is located in
Greystanes. At the time of writhing this update on our activities the outing
may shift to the Balaka Waterfall which is in Carlingford. This session will
be on using cameras without filters to take waterfall photos where the
length of the shooting time gives that silky look to the water as its
falling. All outings finish with a coffee.
Our next meeting will be 7:00 pm on April 3 at the Shenstone's residence.
The address is 5 De La Salle Place, Castle Hill. For the regulars please
bring your monochrome photos and for any new people just come along and
enjoy the company listening to how we discuss improving our photography
skills or bring some photos on a memory stick.
We have a number of places to shoot great photos, where the next outing will
be will be discussed at our next meeting.

Ten Pin Bowling took place on Friday 15 March with 8 participants.
The highlights were the excellent bowling from David Turner who set a new record of 181 pins while Glenda set the pace for the girls.
With the third Friday in the month of April being “Good Friday” our next game will be Friday 17th May, with play commencing at 1.30 pm. To facilitate shoe hire & ball selection please be at the venue at 1.15 pm.
As has been the case in the past, I will send a “sms” to all who have played previously, or expressed an interest in playing, a week out from game day asking for those wishing to play to get back to me by “sms” by Sunday evening so I can book lanes.
If anyone else would like to participate please contact me

Cremorne Point to Taronga Zoo Walk
A record 26 members attended the walk from Cremorne Point to Taronga Zoo on Tuesday 12th March. It was a rather hot day, but we were slightly less affected by the heat because of our proximity to the water.
We walked along the foreshore of Cremorne behind many of the harbour mansions with their beautiful views and gardens, and along past Mosman Rowers Club to Reid Park in Mosman Bay. After a brief stop we tackled the climb over the headland to Sirius Cove. The stairs and steep climb were not enough to stop a bunch of determined seniors and we made it to the beach in the Cove.
From there it was an easy stroll to Taronga Zoo wharf.
Everyone was a winner on the walk. Lyn was given her own personal map, John Savic had a swim in Sirius Cove and Andrew snapped at least 100 photos of the magnificent views back to the bridge and opera house. Afterwards a group of us had coffee and a snack back at Circular Quay & seven others caught the ferry to Watsons Bay for a fish & chip lunch from Doyles takeaway .
Next Walk: Tuesday 16th April COCKATOO ISLAND
The next walk is planned to be a guided walk around Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour. Subject to final confirmation, we will tour the world heritage listed Cockatoo Island. This is an on-foot tour of about 90 minutes that provides an extensive coverage of the island’s history with anecdotes and stories from the island’s past. A reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required to cover the upper part of the island.
There is a cost per person of $12.00. We also need a minimum of 10 people. The tour is specifically aimed at seniors.
The plan is to catch the 10.11am ferry from Meadowbank wharf.
If you plan to attend, can you please deposit $12.00 in the Activities Account with your name and description of Cockatoo.
