President's Report

Picture
Tony Coote President

Its great to be able to focus on our Probus Club again, after being fully committed to the Rotary Club Garage Sale for the last month or so. Despite the very wet weather, The Rotary Club of West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook (Our founding Rotary Club) ran a very successful Garage Sale on the weekend of October 13th and 14th at Cherrybrook. Many of our Probus Club members helped out and their support was very much appreciated. Over $35,000 was raised and the money will be dispersed to the club’s local and international charities with special emphasis on the NSW Farmer’s Drought Relief.

A special thanks this month to Brian Powyer who has organised 3 walks over the past month or so. These included the Arthur Phillip Walk along the headwaters of the Parramatta River, The Foundations of Parramatta Walk and in November the Bidjigal Reserve walk at West Pennant Hills. Brian has a wealth of knowledge about the history and geography of our area and is a great story teller. He makes the history come alive.

Please give thought to taking on a committee position in the 2019/2020 year. The workload is not heavy and it’s a chance to really get involved and make the most of your club membership.  Please talk to Ian Roberts, or any of the committee members and we will help clarify the role and responsibilities and also to help with the nomination form. Nominations close at the February Meeting in 2019.

There are lots of activities happening in the months leading up to Christmas. Come along and join in as many as you can.

Enjoy Probus!

Tony

Guest Speaker - Noel Phelan - HMAS MELBOURNE, HMAS VOYAGER COLLISION

On the 10th February 1964, during night time exercises, the Daring Class destroyer HMAS VOYAGER was in collision with the aircraft carrier HMAS MELBOURNE. The ships were engaged in a night exercise where planes would do "touch and goes" on MELBOURNE. 82 sailors lost their lives including the captain and all the officers on the bridge of the VOYAGER.

This disaster also provided opportunities for people to demonstrate exceptional bravery and courage. This is Australia's worst peacetime accident. As a result, there has been continuing conjecture as to why VOYAGER altered course to put her across the bows of MELBOURNE.

It took two Royal Commissions to provide some answers. Could this happen again? Unfortunately it did in 1969 when HMAS MELBOURNE was again involved in a collision resulting in many lives lost.

Come along and learn what happened and how it happened and the support provided to the survivors.
Picture
Noel Phelan's first career was as a science and mathematics teacher. He then moved into IT with IBM where he spent 25 years in various technical and management positions.

He has been a volunteer guide at the Maritime Museum for several years and enjoys showing visitors over HMAS Vampire, HMAS Advance, HMAS Onslow and First Lady. Noel is also the team leader for the museum speakers.

Noel is a Past President of the Northbridge Rotary Club and he is an active volunteer in retirement with Sailability and a director and sailing captain of his sailing club. Noel also served as a director of Taldumande – the organisation that looks after homeless and at risk young people north of the harbour. He also spent several years with Marine Rescue and the Rural
Fire Service.

Important Notice – Attendance at Activities

As a matter of courtesy, please consider the Activity Organiser, and sign up and pay well in advance. It is very difficult for the organiser and the venue if most people have booked and paid well in advance, and a few people decide to turn up at the last minute. Restaurants and venues have often allocated tables, and squeezing extra people in is difficult. It also makes the job of accounting for the payments very confusing.

If you cannot attend a function that you have booked, please notify the Activity Organiser as early as possible so that the venue can be notified.  If you have already paid, your payment will be refunded if the venue agrees to accept the reduction in bookings. This is covered in detail in our Activity Refund Policy.

Because of several recent events, we are forced to change our policy. For pre-paid events, if your money is not in the Activities Account by the organiser’s due date, you will not be able to join the group at the venue.  You are of course free to make your own booking, but those who have paid in advance will have preference for seating, and if no space is available at the booked table you may have to sit separately.

Our Activity Organisers work hard to provide you with great activities. Please help make their job as easy as possible.

Get dressed up and come along for a great, fun lunch. Any questions please contact Bev Davison.

Cluster 5 Combined Probus Clubs Lawn Bowls and Dinner

I am sending a reminder for the above combined Cluster 5 social gathering which I have booked at Pennant Hills Bowling Club on Yarrara Road, Pennant Hills for Friday 2nd November 2018.  The cost for bowls is $10.00 per person and commences at 4.00pm running through to 6.00pm - the club will provide information before we commence playing re techniques (could be a debatable point for some of us!) and I think we will have a club guy on hand when we commence playing.  All equipment will be supplied so all we have to do is turn up.

We can then, if anyone wants to, have dinner at the club and I know the meals are pretty good and reasonably priced. Please advertise this amongst your members 'cause any person in your club is welcome - they don’t need to be part of the participating committee. Hopefully we will have a good number of attendees - and of course I would need to know numbers prior to the event to let the club prepare.

Kay Rankine
Ambassador - Thornleigh Mixed Probus Club

This is a great chance to meet members of other Probus Clubs in our area and enjoy an afternoon/ evening of fellowship.

Please confirm your interest with Glenda who will pass it on to Kay Rankine.

West Pennant Hills & Cherrybrook Rotary Club
2018 Giant Garage Sale

The West Pennant Hills & Cherrybrook Rotary Club would like to thank all of the WPH&D Probus Club members who helped us out at the various stalls & also during the packing up on the Sunday afternoon and on the Tuesday morning.

The club would also like to thank the Probus members who supported the garage sale by coming along and buying items.

Despite the rainy weather, which resulted in having to split the venues between the Fire Station and the Cherrybrook Uniting Church, the garage sale was a great success, with around $27,000 net proceeds being raised.

Photos from the garage sale weekend are now on the WPH&C Rotary website.

Cycling October and November 2018
Unfortunately we had to cancel the ride in October as many members of our group were not available.

But hopefully our Wednesday 7th November ride will be more successful.  We plan to ride from Gosford to Woy Woy and return (24 km).

The ride is quite flat and runs right alongside Brisbane waters on cycle tracks. There is a small road section, but its on quiet back streets and very safe. We can have a coffee at Woy Woy, or there is a coffee shop on the track near Point Claire.

We will meet at the Cherrybrook Community Centre at 9AM and we can car pool. Please let Tony know if you would like to come along.

October Day Trip - Tuesday 16th October
The Foundations of Parramatta Historical Guided Walking Tour - With Brian Powyer

Sixteen of us went on the "Foundations of Parramatta" historical walk, which was guided by Brian Powyer. It was an easy walk around the historic precinct of Parramatta bounded by the Parramatta River, O’Connell, George and Macquarie Streets, including a section of World Heritage listed Parramatta Park Domain.

We saw Aboriginal scar trees, Governor Phillips redoubt (fort),  the foundations of the original Government Farm settlement, Governor Macquarie’s weir, the Old Kings School, the archaeological remains Governor Macquarie’s first hospital, the oldest remaining building in the Parramatta CBD, the first bowling green in Australia, the archaeological remains of convict huts and Wheatsheath Hotel, and the oldest bridge in Australia, and of course the original foundations of the first Government House in Parramatta.

Radiocarbon dating suggests human activity occurred in Parramatta from around 30,000 years ago.The Darug people who lived in the area before European settlement regarded the area as rich in food from the river and forests. They called the area Baramada or Burramatta ('Parramatta') which means "head of waters","the place where the eels lie down".

Parramatta was founded in 1788, the same year as Sydney. As such, Parramatta is the second oldest city in Australia, being only 10 months younger than Sydney. The British Colonists, who had arrived in January 1788 on the First Fleet at Sydney Cove, had only enough food to support themselves for a short time and the soil around Sydney Cove proved too poor to grow the amount of food that 1,000 convicts, soldiers and administrators needed to survive. During 1788, Governor Arthur Phillip had reconnoitered several places before choosing Parramatta as the most likely place for a successful large farm. Parramatta was the furthest navigable point inland on the Parramatta River (i.e. furthest from the thin, sandy coastal soil) and also the point at which the river became freshwater and therefore useful for farming.[1]

Once again Brian Powyer was a font of knowledge on the early days of Parramatta providing great details on how the town progressed from the very start.

Lunch was at Lachlan's restaurant at Old Government House Parramatta.

Opal Card Overnight Trips

Picture
Our Next Trip

Current feedback favours a Blue Mountains trip say next April/May.

Also as per our Canberra trip we could depart on a Sunday and return Wednesday (3 nights- 4 days) with flexibility for those that may desire a shorter or longer stay.

Whilst the Opal Card worked for our Newcastle trip, the general consensus is we require a mixture of both train and car transport to enable us easy access to the various attractions at our destination, ie car pool.
Apart from suitable destinations any other suggestions in regards to the best time of year to visit, accommodation and attractions, etc. are always welcome.

For our Blue Mountains experience we are focusing on the popular Wentworth Falls, Leura and Katoomba (adjoining towns) district.

To finalise our 2018 schedule, we have the NSW premiere of Tarzan the Musical presented by Sydney Youth Musical Theatre at Hornsby RSL Club on Friday 23 November at 7:30pm. Tickets $32. Tarzan features heart-pumping music by rock legend, Phil Collins.

Washed up on the shores of West Africa, an infant boy is taken in and raised by gorillas who name him Tarzan. Apart from striving for acceptance from his ape father, Tarzan's life is mostly monkey business until a human expedition treks into his tribe's territory, and he encounters creatures like himself for the first time. Tarzan struggles to navigate a jungle, thick with emotion, as he discovers his animal upbringing clashing with his human instincts.

The cost is just $32, for members and guests with payment by Friday 2 November to help secure good seats for that evening.

Arthur Phillip Walk   - Tuesday 9th October

Twelve of us set out to follow the path of Arthur Phillip as he went searching for suitable pasture land in the early days of the Sydney colony. Our guide, Brian Powyer, brought to life some of the issues and difficulties for those early settlers.

We met up at Old Government House in Parramatta Park and walked the banks of the river till we reached the spot where Phillip and his party camped and roasted ducks on their bayonets over a fire.

We saw where the Darling Mills Creek and the Toongabbie Creek come together to form the start of the Parramatta River. Not only was it an extremely pleasant walk, but it was brought to life by Brian’s vast knowledge of the early settlement and many of the people and occurrences that resulted in the Sydney/Parramatta that we know today.

NEXT WALK – Tuesday 13th November –Bidjigal Reserve
The next bush walk will be on 13th November 10.00am to 12noon. The meeting place is at the Reserve entry at the far end of Heidi Place (off Range Road) West Pennant Hills. There is parking available at the entry. The walk is on a fire trail and rough bush tracks with some steeper sections. Features of the walk include overhangs and an Aboriginal shelter as well as the waterfall (hopefully there will be a water flow). Walkers should wear closed shoes and a hat, sunscreen and to bring water with them.

Bidjigal Reserve has much to offer those on the walk. It features towering eucalypt forest, weathered sandstone cliffs, creeks cascading over rocks and sheltered rainforest gullies, Bidjigal Reserve is an island of natural habitat with 370 native plant species, over 140 native animals, myriads of birds, spectacular varieties of native orchids and a diverse show of fungi makes a walk through Bidjigal Reserve an interesting, relaxing and educational experience. The Reserve has been described A place of rugged natural beauty, full of hidden treasures; a time capsule of ancient eco systems, aboriginal shelters and colonial history.

Our guide will be Jennifer Farrer. Thanks to Brian Powyer for arranging this walk for us.

Please note that this will be the last walk for the year. We will resume our walks in or around February/March next year when the hot summer weather has ended.
