President's Report

Picture
Tony Coote President

Our guest speakers have been amazing. Last month, Derek Jones gave us all a very colourful tour through the African continent. Starting in the north and criss-crossing with a little story about each place he visited along the way, his stories gave us insight into the enormous problems that African Countries face with wars, disease and corrupt governments.

Some countries are emerging from their difficulties, while others seem hopeless. I remember his story about the pirates of Somalia. Derek has a very modern and balanced perspective and he is a real story teller. Many thanks to Sue Hackett who continues to bring us such excellent guest speakers.

We seem to be be sailing along quite well for a group of people that have been together for 2 years. A lot of lasting friendships have formed and we have activities that appeal to nearly all our members.  For most of us, our club is providing a lot of social activity and enjoyment.

But I am conscious that there are perhaps 20% of our membership who have only attended 2 or 3 activities this Probus year (starting in April). Your committee is keen to help everyone get the most out of their membership. Please give us your thoughts and we will welcome any criticism or ideas you have.

Can you believe it! This meeting is the second birthday for our club. So we will be celebrating with a birthday cake. Please come along and enjoy it with us.

I look forward to seeing you at our meetings and activities. Why not try a new activity this month?

Tony

Guest Speaker - Tom Sweeney - On With The Show

Tom Sweeney is President of Willoughby Theatre Company which in 2018 celebrated 61 years of staging Broadway musicals to patron on the north shore and wider Sydney.

Both Tom and his wife Joy have been members of WTC for 49 years and during that time Tom has directed over 40 musicals for that company and directed plays and musicals for other companies in Sydney.
The Company now stages all its productions in the magnificent Concourse Chatswood and annually stages two major Broadway musicals and one Concert with a 100 voice choir, 32 piece orchestra and soloists. This year it is the music from
the musical MAME.

Tom has directed such shows as Les Miserable, The Boy From Oz, Titanic, Zorba, Meet Me In St Louis, The Scarlet Pimpernel, 42nd Street and has appeared on stage in Camelot, Half a Sixpence, Brigadoon and Pyjama Game to name a few.

Tom and his wife, try to visit New York every two years to catch up on the latest Broadway shows and gather ideas for productions with WTC.

Tom will present a behind the scenes description of how musicals are actually chosen, cast, rehearsed and staged and how it is now a big business not just a hobby.

Willoughby Theatre Company regularly attracted approx. 10,000 patrons a year to its shows and spends an average of $275,000 on each production. They are currently in rehearsal for SHREK – The Musical in October.

Dining Out

Picture
There were 29 of us at the impromptu Christmas in July Celebration at Pennant Hills Golf Club.
Much to the envy of the other guests at the function, the event organisers dressed up our tables in Christmas decorations. A big thanks to them.

Our dinner was slow cooked beef ribs with roasted corn, green beans, snow peas, mashed potatoes, and salad followed by a decadent chocolate cake with ice-cream.

We had a very cosy evening by the log fire.

August dining out - TBA

Members of the Garden Group met at Bunnings and heard an interesting and helpful presentation by a representative from ‘Richgro’. We were also given and “Easy to Grow Gardens” booklet as well as information sheets on:
- Guide to Rose Maintenance
- Easy to grow your first garden
- Easy to grow Organic & natural seasonal gardening
- Rock Minerals – to make great healthier gardens
- Easy to grow fruit & vegies
- Easy problem solver

As usual, we were also given a free plant and enjoyed our free cappuccino and chat at the Bunnings café.  The next Bunnings Garden day will be on Thursday 9 August.

We are planning a visit to the Botanical Gardens in the next few weeks.  More details will be made available in the next week.
Please let Sue or Lorenza know if you’d like to be advised of upcoming Garden Group activity.

Golf

Picture
We had 11 participants on 6th July Golf Group at Pennant Hills Golf Club.
It was mostly sunny but a very windy day. Well, a perfect excuse why I am spraying balls left, right and seldom centre.

Bob Carritt and John Cauchi did exceptionally well but we all had a pretty good time. I think we will probably get some of the rusty players back into the frustrating-game fold.

The August golf day will be at Asquith on Friday 3rd August. Details below. Contact Mike McLeod for more details.

August Golf Group
Date - Friday 3rd August 2018

Tee Off Time - 8.30am (18 holes), 10.30am (9 holes)

Investment Group

Picture
The Investment Group met on Friday morning the 28th June at Mike and Marilyn McLeod’s house. We had an excellent turnout with 18 attendees.

The meeting started with a computer presentation connecting live to the Commsec trading system and we reviewed some of the analysis and research tools available. This session proved popular and we will cover other Commsec site aspects at our July meeting.

The remainder of the meeting was devoted to a breakout session for the three teams in the competition, namely the Blues led by Colin McGowan, the Reds led by Ian Roberts and the Greens led by myself. All teams discussed their respective strategy for analysing and selecting stocks to put into their portfolios. All teams are very enthusiastic, as I understand all teams will meet separately during July to prepare for our next meeting on Thursday 26th July.

The August meeting will be at the Coote residence on Thursday 23rd August.

Opal Card Overnight Trips

Picture
Canberra Trip, Sunday 9th to Wednesday 12th September

As of Wednesday 13th June we had 12 people seeking six rooms at the Knightsbridge Canberra, Kingston which is a one year old, four star establishment extremely well located being close to Parliament House, dining establishments and many of the other Canberra attractions.
Picture
In my absence, if you would like to join in the fun please contact Donna Fraser who has kindly offered to liaise with the hotel to try and secure additional rooms, if available. Apart from your name and number of people please advise Donna:
  • Room preference
    • Superior $198/night
    • Executive $210/night
    • Two bedroom apartment $320/night.
  • Preferred duration, starting Sunday 9th September:
    • Two nights
    • Three nights
    • Longer
Current requests are mainly for the “Superior Rooms” plus one for a two bedroom apartment (there are only three in the complex), all for three nights.

Background
From the activity sheet questionnaire I put out at our last meeting we had
  • About 30 people showing interest, a great start.
  • They all preferred Canberra over Queanbeyan (more affordable) and 4star over 3star accommodation.
  • Reasonably even over 2 or 3 nights’ accommodation, and
  • Visiting during Floriade (15 Sept to 14 Oct) was immaterial for the vast majority.

As such we are now looking at Sunday 9th to Wednesday 12th September (as opposed to the following weekend to coincide with Floriade) with flexibility to cater for those wishing a shorter or longer stay. For those interested these dates coincide with Parliament sittings (Monday to Thursday).

Whilst I would envisage driving down on Sunday and returning Wednesday there is also the option of catching a train (must be checked in by 11.30am from Central (Platform 1) to Kingston ACT (about 4.00pm and only a few blocks to our hotel). Includes a buffet car and costs only about $57.00 return for seniors, provided the majority drive we could then car pool in order to see the sites. Alternatively I understand the Canberra buses are an attractive alternative to driving.

Hotel: Terms and Conditions
  • All rates quoted are inclusive of GST.
  • The above offer will be honoured for 14 days from the date of proposal, and may be subject to renegotiation thereafter.
  • Rooms will be held after a signed copy of this proposal has been received by Knightsbridge Canberra.
  • Rooming List: Rooms without any names attached to them will be released 10 days from the date of check in.
  • Check in time: 2.00pm    Check out time: 10.00am
  • Cancellation Policy: Any cancellation of rooms less than 72 hours from the check in date, will incur a full charge of the entire length of stay.
  • In the event that Knightsbridge Canberra cannot provide a room at the time of guest arrival that has been confirmed, we will source a room of comparable or better quality in another property as close as possible to Knightsbridge Canberra at the same rate.  Knightsbridge Canberra will be responsible for any additional room charges and transportation costs associated with the relocation and will offer one free telephone call to the traveller to advise his/her company of the relocation. (we are to be advised asap if they cannot accommodate our entire group).
At this stage we don’t have to make any payment to secure our accommodation, however (apart from having my credit card details) we will require payment into the clubs Activity account prior to 30th August and then we will just make the one payment to the hotel.

Canberra blurb:
Outside the gates of Floriade and the traditional attractions visitors will discover a city full of surprises including world-class food and wine, attractions that hold and share the stories of Australia and breathtaking natural beauty – where everything is just moments away.
Enjoying the great outdoors comes naturally in the bush capital. Soar above Lake Burley Griffin in a hot air balloon, hike the mountainous surrounds or venture into our nearby national parks like Tidbinbilla to get up close and personal with native Australian wildlife.

After all that fresh air you’ll have earned a little indulgence. Refuel in the inner-city foodie precincts of Braddon, NewActon and the Kingston Foreshore, where you’ll find a delicious combination of hipster coffee shops, innovative cafes and award-winning restaurants – or spend the day sampling the ACT region’s cool climate wines, with more than 30 cellar doors located within 35 minutes drive of Canberra.

If arts and culture is your thing, Canberra has you covered with a multitude of galleries and museums to explore and discover more about Australia’s history. Head to the Parliamentary Triangle where you can find the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, the National Portrait Gallery, Parliament House and more of Canberra’s famed attractions, many of which are located just a short stroll from one another. At the National Gallery of Australia, discover the bright and colourful works of artist Frank Stella in The Kenneth Tyler Print Collection until 22 October.

Our fun-filled city is the perfect destination for families. Let the kids run wilder than their imaginations with a flurry of family-friendly activities including monstrous milkshakes at Patissez, lifelike dinosaurs at the National Dinosaur Museum and weird and wonderful science experiments at Questacon. If outdoor fun is in order, discover the fun Pod Playground at the National Arboretum Canberra or explore the trails and gardens at the stunning Australian National Botanic Gardens.

When it comes to Canberra, you never know what unexpected wonders are waiting around the corner.

If you have any activity suggestions please send me an email (copy Donna in) which we can organise after I get back. At this stage our main priority is to secure the accommodation.

It is also suggested that each member of the group post a photo on the Probus website each month based on a selected competition in Viewbug. The group will review each photo and select and/or modify the one we feel is the best and enter it in the Viewbug competition and see how it fares. This will encourage everyone to take at least one photo a month, provide a further focus for photo taking, facilitate development of our skills in a collegiate atmosphere and get feedback on our group effort from the wider photographic community.

        • At that meeting we decide on our group entry and post it on the Viewbug site and enter it in the completion.
        • Results should be available for the next Wed meeting on August 1st.
    • Competitions to consider entering in August are
      • Elegant – show your interpretation of elegance
      • People at Night- show people at night (Voting closes 29th Aug, so judging may not be completed by the Sept Wed meeting)
    • Decision concerning which one to be made at August meeting

Bain Shenstone and Andrew Little tried macro photography using on a water droplet on a flower, with the reflection of another flower in it.  Whilst this took a fair bit of trial and error the result in the end was pleasing (see photo below - you have to look carefully!).

On Wednesday 4th July, Rob Clarke held a very informative workshop on "Getting the most out of an IPhone camera".
We were all amazed at what features the camera app on the IPhone and IPad (& Android phones) has, once you know about them! Note the "animated" photo of Cathy, Keith & Toni -  they were a bit tired by the end of the evening....

We even learnt how to take a panoramic shot & then annotate it - everyone looks a bit self absorbed in the photo below, however we were all concentrating hard on learning how to use all the camera features on our IPhones & IPads.

Below are some photos taken of the photography group at the workshop.

On the playing front there were some excellent scores. Max had a score of 175, whilst David & Douglas L had scores in the 160’s. All the ladies did well with first timers Jan and Jeanette showing they will be a force in the future.

Our next event will take place on Friday 20 July at AMF’s Castle Hill venue (3 Salisbury St) commencing at 1.45pm.

To facilitate lane bookings & payment, I will be texting those who have participated previously and those who have expressed an interest in playing to ascertain who wishes to participate on Friday 20 July.

Again for those members who have not previously expressed an interest to participate and wish to do so, there will be a registration sheet available at the Club’s monthly meeting. Alternatively, you can contact me by email or mobile.

Whale Watching Walk – Watsons Bay to Bondi
On 3rd of July we enjoyed a beautiful walk from Watsons Bay to Bondi. Despite a few set-backs, we did see whales (attached pictures) and we did make our final destination.

Unintentionally, we split up into two groups. Helen & Barry were held up finding car parking at Castle Hill, and Greg and Jenny missed the ferry despite being with us for coffee and snack at Circular Quay. In fact it was a day of highs and lows.

Bob forgot to charge his phone and couldn’t contact anyone, The Gap at Watsons Bay was cordoned off by rescue services, the walk was somewhat disjointed along the cliffs, and the food at Bondi Pavillion was very, very ordinary. The lost four cheated and caught a bus, while we remaining walkers covered the distance (with a couple of diversions) in about three and a half hours.

However, the views were great, the company was good, the whales came out to show off, and it was a beautiful fine day.

Next Walk    Tuesday 14th August   Burgess and Oakland Falls - Hazelbrook
Our next walk is an easy 4 kilometre walk at Hazelbrook in the Blue Mountains. This track descends gently through the forest to the lovely Burgess Falls and its small beach. It then follows the creek to reach the next waterfall which is even more beautiful. Oakland Falls tumbles over a high overhang into lush rainforest.

You can walk behind the falls for a different perspective before continuing on the circuit back to our starting point. It will take about 2 hours to complete the walk.

Arrangements:  Meet at 9.30am at Cherrybrook Community Centre for car pooling
Alternatively: Meet at the end of Winbourne Road, Hazelbrook at 10.30am
Bring: Water, Hat, snack
