President's Report

Picture
Tony Coote President

June already!

At this month’s General Meeting on 27th June, we will be inducting 4 new members into our club. Please introduce yourself to them and make them welcome, or invite them along to an activity.

David Antonjuk and I attended the zone 5 cluster meeting on Thursday. Its an information sharing event which is held several times a year with participants from clubs in our area.  One great idea to come out of the meeting was “Random”. Try a new activity, sit with different people at a meeting or event. Have a chat with members outside your circle, and the list goes on. The zone will be organising events throughout the year including an Activity Leaders meeting and a Guest Speaker Co-ordinator’s meeting where we can go along and get new ideas from people in our surrounding clubs. There will also be a combined outing, perhaps a wine and cheese later on in the year.

This month I attended numerous activities. The investment group rocketed off to a great start with 19 people going to the first meeting at McLeod’s residence. The bushwalk at Glenbrook was another fabulous day, thanks to all Bob Carritt’s efforts.

And Vivid was again an excellent evening with a very different programme to last year. Lastly, Ten Pin Bowling pulled a record group of 13 bowlers and there were 3 scores over 160!

All our committee and activity leaders are doing a fabulous job. What a great club we have!

I look forward to seeing you at our meetings and activities. Don’t forget to take your camera along!

ANZAC Day Barbecue Wednesday 25th April
We lucked in with the weather and we enjoyed a relaxing day at the Bellamy Picnic Area at Cumberland Forest.
30 of us had a barbecue lunch, a few drinks and a good time.

As is the tradition we played a little 2 up (Legal on ANZAC Day) and Donna Fraser and Beverley Dona won the bottles of fine vintage wine.

We will do something similar next year and hope to make it bigger and better next year!

VIVID Tour - Wednesday 13th June (Photos by Tony Coote, Bain Shenstone, Andrew Little)

On Wednesday 13th June, 34 members & friends boarded the bus at 2pm outside the postbox on Coonara avenue for their 2018 Vivid bus tour.  First stop was Centennial Park, where we had Anzac biscuits and tea & coffee.  The weather was kind to us as there was no rain, nearly clear skies, with relatively mild conditions.

The bus then took us to Mrs Macquarie's chair where were were plied with copious amounts of champagne (& orange juice if you needed to water it down), as well as cheese, dip and biscuits.  The views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge & the Opera House with the sun setting behind them were spectacular.

From there we went to the Paddington RSL to have a great dinner with yet a few more beers or wine.

At 8.30pm the bus took to Circular Quay where we wandered around all the brilliant Vivid displays.  A couple of members of the photography group also managed to take some good shots, which are included in the photos below.

To top the trip off, we were then taken to the foreshore under the bridge at Kirabilli, with great views across the harbour of Circular Quay & city buildings, many of which were lit up by Vivid displays.  There were were provided with port and cake, with coffee or tea (if required after the port!).

We then arrived back outside the postbox in Coonara Avenue at around 10pm.

A great day was had by all!

MAY DAY TRIP -  The Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability  Waverton Friday 25th May

It was beautiful sunny day for our guided tour of the restored Coal Loader Centre on the Balls Head Peninsular. It is a community meeting point and a hub for North Sydney Council’s extensive range of environmental and sustainability programs and with an interesting history as an ex-industrial coal bunkering site on Sydney Harbour.

Our tour guide described how it has been transformed into a place which displays best-practice sustainable technology, community gardens, native bush nursery, food gardens, regenerated parklands and a fascinating history.

With great views of the harbour we all wanted to return to experience the many events held at the centre. Once again we finished with a delicious lunch at the Coal Loader Café. Many thanks to Tony for the photos.

JUNE DAY TRIP - Asian Street Food Walking Tour - Friday 1st June

On Friday 1st June thirteen Probus members were taken by our friendly guide Ivy, on a tour of discovery. It was just as though we had experienced a tour of Asia and not downtown Sydney. On our first stop we watched as the Malaysian chef prepared a breakfast dish Roti Canai and Kaya Sauce plus wontons.

We then wove our way through the city sampling Korean, Chinese, Thai, Singaporean and Vietnamese street food. We all vowed to return to visit the great eating venues we had discovered, especially in the newly restored Kensington Street in Chippendale. The precinct combines heritage, hospitality, retail and art.

Some of us were tempted to return to the long queue for Emperor’s Puffs. Eighteen for $5 – delicious steaming hot on a cold wet day!

June Dining Out -  Delhi Heights Indian Restaurant - 15th June 2018

We have 23 diners out on a rather chilly night but the wine and food did wonders. Bob
Davison’s brother joined us as guest at the dinner. The food was aplenty and the service was
good. They even provide with us takeaway containers for doggie bags.

All up a very amenable evening. July dining out is shaping up to be good as well. Please read up about it
below and join us for Christmas in July.

July Dining Out
6th July 2018
5:30 for 6:00PM
Pennant Hills Golf Club
Cnr Copeland Road/Burns Road South
Beecroft 2119

The golf group is organising something different for the month of July. There will be a 9-hole of gold in the afternoon follow by dinner at Pennant Hills Golf Club.

So far we have 9 players signed up with 5 of the spouses joining for dinner afterwards.

In view of this, the dinner group have decided to make this a dining out event for July and celebrate Christmas in July with the traditional roast dinner and dessert.

The club function room usually has a cosy open fireplace. I hope that the renovation work does not inhibit its use.

It will be a fun night.

Please deposit $45 per person into the Activities Account and let me know if you are coming so I can confirm booking at the club in a timely manner.

Gardening

The dreaded flu has hit a lot us and Bunnings was not immune. Our talk on Ferns had to be postponed but Suzette stepped in and talked about new products and seasonal things to be considered around the garden. There’s always something new to be shared if you like gardening (or gardens). As usual our members enjoyed a cuppa and chat after it.

If interested please join us at 10.30am on the second Thursday of the month at Bunnings, Victoria Ave, Castle Hill.
The June Gardening Group activity will be held at Castle Hill Bunnings on Thursday 12th July - 10.30AM for 11AM.

The group then enjoyed a lovely lunch at the Jimmy’s Chinese Restaurant in the clubhouse.

Investment Group

Picture
The investment group held it’s inaugural meeting at the Mike and Marilyn McLeod’s home on Thursday the 31st May. We had 20 attendees (with 9 apologies).

The Investment programme is going to be a competition between three teams who will each have a portfolio of 500,000 notional dollars, with the team having the highest increase on the notional $500,000 at the end of the 2019 financial year being declared the eventual winners.

Ian Roberts is leading the hot Red Team , while Colin McGowan is heading the mighty Blue Team and I am leading the sleek Green Team.

There was great enthusiasm at the May meeting with some keenly competitive Probus members.
Our next meeting is on Thursday 28th June commencing at 10.30am at the McLeod residence.

Look forward to seeing you all there.

On Tuesday, 5th June our group enjoyed viewing The Bookshop at Events Castle Hill. Starring Bill Nighy and Emily Mortimer the movie is an adaptation of Penelope Fitzgerald's celebrated novel of 1978, and set in a beautiful sleepy 1950's English town.

Critics write that the novel was better than the movie but we enjoyed it anyway.

We anticipate our next movie will be at the end of June rather than the first week of the month as the school holidays are once again upon us thus limiting our choices.

We will email you with the details.

Opal Card Overnight Trips

Picture
Canberra Trip, Sunday 9th to Wednesday 12th September

As of Wednesday 13th June we had 12 people seeking six rooms at the Knightsbridge Canberra, Kingston which is a one year old, four star establishment extremely well located being close to Parliament House, dining establishments and many of the other Canberra attractions.
Picture
In my absence, if you would like to join in the fun please contact Donna Fraser who has kindly offered to liaise with the hotel to try and secure additional rooms, if available. Apart from your name and number of people please advise Donna:
  • Room preference
    • Superior $198/night
    • Executive $210/night
    • Two bedroom apartment $320/night.
  • Preferred duration, starting Sunday 9th September:
    • Two nights
    • Three nights
    • Longer
Current requests are mainly for the “Superior Rooms” plus one for a two bedroom apartment (there are only three in the complex), all for three nights.

Background
From the activity sheet questionnaire I put out at our last meeting we had
  • About 30 people showing interest, a great start.
  • They all preferred Canberra over Queanbeyan (more affordable) and 4star over 3star accommodation.
  • Reasonably even over 2 or 3 nights’ accommodation, and
  • Visiting during Floriade (15 Sept to 14 Oct) was immaterial for the vast majority.

As such we are now looking at Sunday 9th to Wednesday 12th September (as opposed to the following weekend to coincide with Floriade) with flexibility to cater for those wishing a shorter or longer stay. For those interested these dates coincide with Parliament sittings (Monday to Thursday).

Whilst I would envisage driving down on Sunday and returning Wednesday there is also the option of catching a train (must be checked in by 11.30am from Central (Platform 1) to Kingston ACT (about 4.00pm and only a few blocks to our hotel). Includes a buffet car and costs only about $57.00 return for seniors, provided the majority drive we could then car pool in order to see the sites. Alternatively I understand the Canberra buses are an attractive alternative to driving.

Hotel: Terms and Conditions
  • All rates quoted are inclusive of GST.
  • The above offer will be honoured for 14 days from the date of proposal, and may be subject to renegotiation thereafter.
  • Rooms will be held after a signed copy of this proposal has been received by Knightsbridge Canberra.
  • Rooming List: Rooms without any names attached to them will be released 10 days from the date of check in.
  • Check in time: 2.00pm    Check out time: 10.00am
  • Cancellation Policy: Any cancellation of rooms less than 72 hours from the check in date, will incur a full charge of the entire length of stay.
  • In the event that Knightsbridge Canberra cannot provide a room at the time of guest arrival that has been confirmed, we will source a room of comparable or better quality in another property as close as possible to Knightsbridge Canberra at the same rate.  Knightsbridge Canberra will be responsible for any additional room charges and transportation costs associated with the relocation and will offer one free telephone call to the traveller to advise his/her company of the relocation. (we are to be advised asap if they cannot accommodate our entire group).
At this stage we don’t have to make any payment to secure our accommodation, however (apart from having my credit card details) we will require payment into the clubs Activity account prior to 30th August and then we will just make the one payment to the hotel.

Canberra blurb:
Outside the gates of Floriade and the traditional attractions visitors will discover a city full of surprises including world-class food and wine, attractions that hold and share the stories of Australia and breathtaking natural beauty – where everything is just moments away.
Enjoying the great outdoors comes naturally in the bush capital. Soar above Lake Burley Griffin in a hot air balloon, hike the mountainous surrounds or venture into our nearby national parks like Tidbinbilla to get up close and personal with native Australian wildlife.

After all that fresh air you’ll have earned a little indulgence. Refuel in the inner-city foodie precincts of Braddon, NewActon and the Kingston Foreshore, where you’ll find a delicious combination of hipster coffee shops, innovative cafes and award-winning restaurants – or spend the day sampling the ACT region’s cool climate wines, with more than 30 cellar doors located within 35 minutes drive of Canberra.

If arts and culture is your thing, Canberra has you covered with a multitude of galleries and museums to explore and discover more about Australia’s history. Head to the Parliamentary Triangle where you can find the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, the National Portrait Gallery, Parliament House and more of Canberra’s famed attractions, many of which are located just a short stroll from one another. At the National Gallery of Australia, discover the bright and colourful works of artist Frank Stella in The Kenneth Tyler Print Collection until 22 October.

Our fun-filled city is the perfect destination for families. Let the kids run wilder than their imaginations with a flurry of family-friendly activities including monstrous milkshakes at Patissez, lifelike dinosaurs at the National Dinosaur Museum and weird and wonderful science experiments at Questacon. If outdoor fun is in order, discover the fun Pod Playground at the National Arboretum Canberra or explore the trails and gardens at the stunning Australian National Botanic Gardens.

When it comes to Canberra, you never know what unexpected wonders are waiting around the corner.

If you have any activity suggestions please send me an email (copy Donna in) which we can organise after I get back. At this stage our main priority is to secure the accommodation.

This will encourage everyone to take at least one photo a month, provide a further focus for photo taking, facilitate development of our skills in a collegiate atmosphere and get feedback on our group effort from the wider photographic community.

Ten Pin Bowling

Picture
We had 13 bowlers at our June 15 event, with 3 of those being first timers, which was great.
On the playing front there were some excellent scores. Max had a score of 175, whilst David & Douglas L had scores in the 160’s. All the ladies did well with first timers Jan and Jeanette showing they will be a force in the future.

Our next event will take place on Friday 20 July at AMF’s Castle Hill venue (3 Salisbury St) commencing at 1.45pm.

To facilitate lane bookings & payment, I will be texting those who have participated previously and those who have expressed an interest in playing to ascertain who wishes to participate on Friday 20 July.

Again for those members who have not previously expressed an interest to participate and wish to do so, there will be a registration sheet available at the Club’s monthly meeting. Alternatively, you can contact me by email or mobile.

Theatre and Musicals

Many thanks to the 24 members and guests who attended Strictly Ballroom on 30 May at the Concourse Theatre, Willoughby Theatre Company is certainly in the top tier of Sydney’s amateur productions.

Our next theatre party is at Hornsby RSL Club to see Sydney Youth Musical Theatre perform “Rock of Ages” on Friday 20 July at 7:30pm. The show is based around classic rock songs from the 1980s, especially from the famous glam metal bands of that decade. The original Broadway production ran for 2,328 performances, closing in January 2015 and tied as the 28th-longest running show in Broadway history.

Walking Group

June Walk - Campfire Creek to Red Hands Cave Circuit- Tuesday 12th June

This month we walked the Campfire Creek to Red Hands Cave track in the Blue Mountains National Park. It was a wet drive up to Glenbrook but the sky cleared and the sun came out just in time for the 9 intrepid walkers to begin their trek.

It was a lovely walk through the Australian bush. We stumbled across a lyrebird, Tony obtained proof that wombats really do have cubic faeces, and Lyn got her photograph of the axe grinding grooves with reflections from the water pool.

The aboriginal wall paintings were impressive and we enjoyed a lunch stop at the cave picnic ground before heading back. I think we all had a few sore muscles the next day, as it was a reasonably solid 9 kilometre walk. Some of the photos that were taken will reveal what a beautiful Australian landscape we passed through.

Next Walk
:    Whale Watching - Watsons Bay to Bondi - Tuesday 3rd July

It’s whale watching season in Sydney. What better place to catch a glimpse of these magnificent creatures than from the iconic cliffs between Watsons Bay and Bondi. This walk is an easy 7 km walk that incorporates the 5 km Federation Cliff Walk. It boasts stunning sandstone cliffs and amazing panoramic views of the Tasman Sea. It wanders through beautiful parklands and open spaces and includes a very exciting timber walkway with viewing platforms that brings you right on top of the cliffs. And hopefully we can catch sight of some of the whales as they migrate North to warmer waters. Perhaps members of the photography group may like to join us?

Organisation: The plan is to catch a train and then a ferry to Watsons Bay to commence the walk. While the walk is probably only 2 hours, with photo stops and breaks we should plan for a three and a half hour adventure.

Meet at Circular Quay (ferry wharf 2) to catch the 10.17am ferry to Watsons Bay. At the conclusion of the walk we can catch bus number 333 from Bondi (they run every 10 minutes) back to Town Hall station for a train or bus home.

There are plenty of cafes and restaurants in North Bondi, but I suggest you bring a drink and a snack, and dress for windy, Winter conditions. There are plenty of park areas that are perfect for picnics. It will be a full day out.
