President's Report

Picture
Tony Coote President

Fellow members, we need your help! In March next year we will have our next Annual General Meeting and at that time most of the committee members will have served for 3 terms and will have to step down from their positions as required under Probus rules.

Ian Roberts has kindly agreed to take the lead in helping us to find the members who will step up and take over these key leadership roles in our club. With the club up and running, all the hard work is done. None of the committee roles are onerous or time consuming and by getting involved, I promise you, you will get a lot more out of your experience with the club.  Why not give it a go?

Once again, we have a full activities programme for May and June and I urge you to participate wherever you can.  Don’t forget the Vivid tour on 13th June and also the Hunter Valley trip June 19th to 22nd.  And a stop-press announcement – we have a trip to Canberra planned for Floriade in September!

We are always on the lookout for great photos of our various activities for the newsletter.  Please take your camera with you. A big thank you to all our activities leaders for the fabulous job they do providing interesting, fun activities for all of us to enjoy.

I look forward to seeing you at our meetings and activities.

Guest Speaker -Faye Yarroll - The Gift Of Hearing

Picture
Faye has received the greatest gift of all, the “Gift of Hearing” and is an accomplished guest speaker who has an inspiring story to tell.

She will be sharing her story of receiving two Cochlear Implants and bringing us up to date with the latest amazing technology for hearing impaired people today. She will also tell us about her wonderful Lions Hearing Dog named “Sydney” who helps Faye in her everyday life to alert her to various sounds.

One of the best parts of the Hearing Dog story is that 99% of all Hearing Dogs are actually rescue dogs from animal shelters that are trained to become a Hearing Dog.

It’s a win win situation for the dog and for the recipient. This story is sure to touch your hearts in many ways.   Come and join “Faye and the beautiful Sydney” at our next meeting but please refrain from patting “Sydney” as she is a Service dog in uniform.

Now on to the next movie day!!

We have set Wednesday 16th May for our next movie. We did intend to see Breath but it appears that Events cinema at Castle Hill has dropped it since our last discussion. SO we will have the opportunity to choose between The Crooked House and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (for those who have not yet seen it).

Both movies will be showing at 10.00am so let’s meet at 9.30 to ensure ticket availability.

Opal Card Overnight Trips

Picture
Expression of Interest for:
Floriade 2018 Canberra

From Saturday 15 September until Sunday 14 October 2018

Our visit say Sunday 16th to Tue 18th or Wed 19th Sept 2018
As our OPAL card only takes us to Goulburn, our best option is to possibly drive which also provides ready transport to both commute around Canberra and broaden our accommodation options.
If we drive down on Sunday we could visit Floriade on Monday (say am) as a group and then visit some of the other attractions over the next day or so, whatever appeals which apart from the company may assist determine when you/we return or alternatively stay longer.

All of which we will consider, including accommodation if there is sufficient interest for this trip. As such there will be an “Expression of Interest” sheet at out next meeting. If we proceed we will have to move reasonably quickly to secure accommodation.

A brief history, Floriade was developed in 1988 as a grand, one off floral tribute to mark Australia’s Bicentenary and Canberra’s 75th anniversary, Floriade has become Canberra’s most iconic annual tourism event and Australia’s premier spring festival.

The floral display of more than a million bulbs and annuals planted across 8,000 square metres of inner city parkland is more than just a flower show. Floriade is a diverse, ever expanding program of music, cultural celebrations, food and wine, horticultural workshops, market traders, artistic displays, entertainment and recreational activities.
Outside the gates of Floriade visitors will discover a city full of surprises including world-class food and wine, attractions that hold and share the stories of Australia and breathtaking natural beauty – where everything is just moments away.
Enjoying the great outdoors comes naturally in the bush capital. Soar above Lake Burley Griffin in a hot air balloon, hike the mountainous surrounds or venture into our nearby national parks like Tidbinbilla to get up close and personal with native Australian wildlife.

After all that fresh air you’ll have earned a little indulgence. Refuel in the inner-city foodie precincts of Braddon, NewActon and the Kingston Foreshore, where you’ll find a delicious combination of hipster coffee shops, innovative cafes and award-winning restaurants – or spend the day sampling the ACT region’s cool climate wines, with more than 30 cellar doors located within 35 minutes drive of Canberra.

If arts and culture is your thing, Canberra has you covered with a multitude of galleries and museums to explore and discover more about Australia’s history. Head to the Parliamentary Triangle where you can find the Museum of Australian Democracy at Old Parliament House, the National Portrait Gallery, Parliament House and more of Canberra’s famed attractions, many of which are located just a short stroll from one another. At the National Gallery of Australia, discover the bright and colourful works of artist Frank Stella in The Kenneth Tyler Print Collection until 22 October.

Our fun-filled city is the perfect destination for families. Let the kids run wilder than their imaginations with a flurry of family-friendly activities including monstrous milkshakes at Patissez, lifelike dinosaurs at the National Dinosaur Museum and weird and wonderful science experiments at Questacon. If outdoor fun is in order, discover the fun Pod Playground at the National Arboretum Canberra or explore the trails and gardens at the stunning Australian National Botanic Gardens.

When it comes to Canberra, you never know what unexpected wonders are waiting around the corner.

Footnotes: I have suggested the above dates as a number of us are in Rotary and we will be preparing for our Garage Sale after this trip which is Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th October.

Reasonable, circa 4 star accommodation (double/twin room) is circa $250 to $300 per night in the ACT during Floriade which is a little more expensive and crowded than usual. Regardless Canberra is comparatively expensive mid-week given the number of visitors with company or government  expense accounts.  Some (self-funded) elect to stay in Queanbeyan which is about 10k away and a tad more affordable.

So the “Expression of Interest” sheet will include a few columns seeking your preferences, eg:
  • Visit Canberra during or outside Floriade.
  • Accommodation ACT or Queanbeyan, assuming availability.
  • Two or three night visit.
  • Comments/ recommendations
  • Would you like to be on a committee to assist organise?

If you have any thoughts on how to make this a better trip please give me a call.

Blue Gum Forest Walk - Monday 14th May (photos below)

Eleven of us completed the Blue Gum Forest during the month. It was a beautiful walk through some of the last remaining stands of blue gum trees in the Sydney area. At times it got a little steep, and there were some complaints, but everyone felt like they had achieved something by the end of the walk.

The Fishponds waterhole at the bottom of the gully was a lovely oasis and a fitting reward for the effort it took to get there. Lynne had difficulty identifying the Blue Gums, Max had difficulty negotiating the stepping stones, John had difficulty breathing, most of us had difficulty with balance and through it all Cliff (our most senior member) leapt from rock to rock across the creeks and generally put most of us to shame.

However, for a bunch of senior citizens we did pretty well, so the reward of coffee and cake afterwards was well earned.

June Walk - Campfire Creek to Red Hands Cave Circuit- Tuesday 12th June

Now that the weather is cooler, we can embark on some Blue Mountain bush walks. The next walk is about an 8 kilometre circuit from Campfire Creek to Red hands Cave and return in the Blue Mountains National Park at Glenbrook. The grading is moderate and there are a couple of steeper ascents and descents. It will take about 3 hours 30 minutes to complete (including lunch break).

The track was most likely used by the Dharug people for thousands of years and winds through remote bushland to one of the best aboriginal stencil galleries in the Sydney Basin. There are also ancient axe grinding grooves along Campfire Creek, where aboriginal people formed or sharpened their axes.

The plan is to commence the walk from the Campfire Creek car park at 10.30am. To get to the car park you have to enter the Blue Mountains National Park at Glenbrook (entry fee of $8.00 per car applies) and drive down to the causeway, cross over the causeway then drive a very short distance up the hill to the car park. (located at a hairpin turn in the road).

We will need to take as few cars as possible by car pooling from Cherrybrook Community Centre and sharing the cost of entry to the park. We should depart the community centre by 9.30am for the 50 minute drive to Glenbrook. Please don’t be put off by the grading of the walk. It is graded moderate/hard and we will take our time with plenty of breaks. For those of you on the last walk (Blue Gum Forest), it is about the same difficulty but an hour longer. Bring a sandwich, a hat and water.

Wine & Cheese

Picture

Julie and Bain Shenstone hosted the Wine & Cheese night on Black Friday 13th April.
Theme was Black and Paraskevidekatriaphobia (fear of Friday 13th).

A “pseudosombre” soiree was enjoyed by all surrounded by black cats, ladders, spilt salt, broken mirrors and upside down horseshoes. But hey, who ‘s superstitious??

Susan and David Antonjuk hosted the Wine and Cheese night on Friday 11th May.

The evening was characterised by convivial conversation with the attendees chatting constantly whilst consuming copious canapes and imbibing liberally (in moderation?).

The next wine & cheese is on Friday 8th June, 7.30pm
Marilyn and John Savic’s Residence.
