President's Report

Picture
Tony Coote President

25 Probus Club Members and friends of members spent 9 days travelling to the South Pacific aboard the beautiful Celebrity Solstice. Despite some rain and a bit of rough weather, we all had a fabulous time. The ship’s facilities, shows and food were all amazing. Thanks to Sue Hackett for making all the arrangements. Sue will provide a full update at our meeting on 18th April.

My thanks to David Antonjuk, Colin McGowan and Ian Roberts who jumped in to run the last general meeting.  I’m told that we had a good roll up, despite so many people on the cruise. Brian Powyer’s talk on Australia almost French was also a hit. Many thanks Brian.

We have a very full activities programme for April and May and I urge you to participate wherever you can.  Don’t forget our ANZAC Day picnic at Cumberland Forest and also the Hunter Valley trip in May.

We are always on the lookout for great photos of our various activities for the newsletter.  Please take your camera with you.

Please pay your annual dues ($60), if you have not already done so. Ninety members have already paid.

I look forward to seeing you at our meetings and activities.

There are no unpresented cheques, so bank balances equal cash balances.

The three activities in process are Book of Mormon, Vivid and Strictly Ballroom. TAFE dinner and Mama Mia were closed, the latter with a surplus of $89.15 (which was moved to the “Surplus” item).

Last month I proposed a “Activities Surplus and Deficit Policy” which was approved by the Committee then the members. This describes how Activities surpluses can be accumulated to cover activities deficits or be used to subsidise an all members event. As you can see above, the surplus balance is $327.82 + $89.15 = $416.97.

Guest Speaker - Riccardo Bosi's Afghan Adventures - Lionheart Australasia

Picture
Can you imagine what would it be like to live, work in the Middle East? Are the images and stories we receive through the news accurate or are they a distortion of the truth?

Can the divide between the Christian West and Muslim Middle East ever really be bridged or is this ‘a fool’s errand’? On a more personal level, what would you learn from such an experience and what would be the insights you would want to share in order to inform Australia’s future engagements?

Author and award-winning speaker Riccardo Bosi is a former Australian Army Special Forces Lieutenant Colonel who, between 2009 and 2014, lived in the United Arab Emirates and with his team trained UAE Special Forces soldiers to fight the ‘war on terror’ in Afghanistan.

During this time, his wife gave birth to their two daughters and raised their family in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE. Riccardo was well suited to this demanding responsibility having previously served with Combined Joint Task Force Headquarters in Kuwait, Australian Theatre and Special Operations Headquarters, the Special Air Service Regiment, and the 1st Commando Regiment.

Riccardo retired after 24 years’ service and since consulted widely to both the public and private sectors on leadership, strategy and innovation, the subject of his about-to-be-released book, Greatness Awaits You – The Five Pillars of Real Leadership.

Celebrity Solstice Cruise 21 - 30 March 2018

Twenty of our Probus Club members plus five friends sailed on a return voyage from Sydney to four islands in the Pacific in the magnificent Celebrity Solstice.

Our four days at sea gave us opportunities to take advantage of the many activities offered each day on board.  Trivia quizzes sometimes attended three times a day were popular. Some members choose to exercise at the gym, attending Zumba classes, walking the deck or taking the stairs up or down many floors! Dancing was popular with Wendy and Bob at every opportunity with others joining them. Ray brought his music along and we managed to find various locations and lounges to gather and enjoy not only the music but friendships and the odd cocktail too! The game of Sequence was provided by Ray & Christine introducing us to a new fun game producing some very competitive players.

Food was quite a focus on the cruise!  We managed to get three tables adjoining of an evening in the Dinning Room to accommodate our group of twenty five giving us the opportunity to mix each evening whilst we enjoyed gourmet food.  Some of us enjoyed speciality restaurants as an added treat.  Then Level 14 where we mostly enjoyed a vast assortment of cuisines for breakfast and lunch.  The entertainment in the auditorium each evening was world class.

The four islands provided most of us a chance to enjoy different cultures and scenery. Our group of snorkelers enjoyed the beauty of the reefs and sea life whilst others swam in the warm waters. Local tours were taken on Lifou and Noumea, in rain and sunshine, giving us an overview of life on the islands. Mystery Island and Isle De Pines were small enough to explore by foot.

Sydney was truely at its best as we arrived back in the early hours of Good Friday as we enjoyed the vista, from our balconies, of the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.

Now back to reality of making our own beds and cooking our meals!

Fun whilst it lasted.

Cycling

What a fabulous day out! Bruce Bartle guided us expertly through tracks in Sydney Olympic Park that we had not been on before. Along the Parramatta River, past wetlands and along the foreshores of Homebush Bay.

Then we had a well-earned coffee at The Waterview Restaurant. We cycled through the Olympic Precinct on the way back to our starting point at Silverwater.

Welcome to the group to Ian Roberts on his first cycling trip in many years.
There is so much to explore, that we have decided to continue in this area next month on 9th May. More details shortly.

There is an opportunity to do a picnic lunch at Waterview Bicentennial Lake and there is bicycle hire there for anyone who would like to try their hand but doesn’t have a bike. You can even hire a tandem bike!

Day Trip Mount Tomah Tuesday 3 April

Can you believe it! With so many dry sunny days who would have thought we would wake up to fog and drizzle for a trip to Mount Tomah. No worries though, we joined the photographers and gardeners and had a great day. Most of us joined the guided walk and toured the botanical gardens learning about the history, bird life and plants of the area.

The warm weather had delayed the display of autumn colours but the mist and raindrops gave the photographers plenty to capture. We had planned to eat at the kiosk but as they had run out of gas we decided the Archibald Hotel and a stop at the Apple Pie Shop was a much better option.

I will definitely be returning to Mount Tomah, preferably when it is sunny and the restaurant with a wonderful view is open. Late winter looks like a good time to visit because of the thousands of daffodils that have been planted.

Gardening

On 3 April some of our Garden Group members, along with members of the Day Trip and Photography Groups enjoyed a day at Mt Tomah Botanical Gardens.  Despite the overcast   weather, resulting in the majestic mountain views being completely obliterated by mist we all enjoyed the day and learned a lot of information from the very knowledgeable guided tour volunteer.

Our tour of the gardens was followed by lunch at the Kurrajong Heights Hotel and the completely misted out distant view!!!

The next Gardening Group activity will be the monthly Bunning Gardening Club – held at Castle Hill Bunnings on 12th April.  10.30AM for 11AM.

Please let Sue or Lorenza know if you’re interested in attending the informative gardening sessions, along with the free plant each meeting,  followed by a good, catch up chat with our Probus members, while enjoying our free Bunning's cappuccino.

Please contact Sue or Lorenza if you’d like more details on the Gardening Group activities.

Location                Mt Tomah Gardens

Despite an overcast and misty day, 15 intrepid PROBUS members from the Garden, Day Trip and Photography groups made a trip to MT Tomah gardens.

Unfortunately, the Autumn colours were unseasonably delayed due to the warmer than usual March weather.
The focus of the photography shifted from landscapes to flowers.

Unfortunately the meetings scheduled for this month at Bain Shenstone’s residence have to be cancelled and will start up again in May. Interim arrangements will be communicated by email to group members.

Ten Pin Bowling Report
We played our second game for 2018 on Friday 16 March.
Nine players rolled up which again was a good turnout given a number of regulars were absent due to the Rotary book sale.

The highlight of the day was the intense competition between Beverly & Enio Dona. Eino, under intense pressure from Beverly pulled off a remarkable 1 point win on his last bowl in game one, with both scoring in the 140’s. Beverly was not to be outdone comfortably winning the second game with a score in the 150’s.
David Turner also bowled very well.

Our next game is scheduled for 2pm, Friday, 20 April.

As advised previously, I will be texting those who have participated and those who have expressed an interest in playing to ascertain who wishes to participate on that day.

Again for those members who have not previously expressed an interest to participate and wish to do so, there will be a registration sheet available at the Club’s monthly meeting. Alternatively, you can contact me by email.

Live Theatre
Thanks for your theatre party deposit to “The Book of Mormon" at the Lyric Theatre Star City, 8:00pm Wednesday 16 May 2018. We have now received tickets that are in the downstairs stalls area and these will be distributed at our April meeting.

We have now booked a return 24-seater coach to the Sydney Lyric Theatre from West Pennant Hills Sports Club on that evening. As previously advised, the additional cost for this is just $20 per person and I’m sure you will agree that the added convenience is well worth the additional cost. Therefore, lease deposit $20 per attendee to cover the transport component into our Probus Activities and Events Account by Friday 20 April 2018.
Please quote your surname and “Morbus"

We now wish to commence taking bookings to our proposed theatre party to “Strictly Ballroom” the musical presented by Willoughby Theatre Company at The Concourse Theatre, Chatswood.

STRICTLY BALLROOM THE MUSICAL is the inspiring story of a championship ballroom dancer who defies all the rules to follow his heart. This uplifting and courageous tale originated as a stage play that Baz Luhrmann created as a student at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) in Sydney back in 1984. The story, the characters, the plot and the music couldn’t happen anywhere else in the world except in Australia in 1985!

Group bookings are available for 10+ bookings.

What we currently propose, is to offer this show to members and guests on Wednesday 30 May 2018 @ 7:30pm.

To register your interest please deposit only $51 per attendee only into our Probus Activities and Events account by Friday 27 April 2018

Narrabeen Lagoon Walk – Monday 9th April
Thirteen of us turned up at Narrabeen to walk the 8.5 kilometre walk around the Narrabeen Lake. Even though it was a very hot day we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The shaded areas were a delight to walk and the views of the lake were outstanding. The council is to be commended for some of the work they have done providing picnic areas and seating, as well as bridges and footways over some of the low lying places. Afterwards we rewarded ourselves with a light lunch at the H20 Café.

Next Walk:      BLUE GUM FOREST WALK –   Hornsby  Monday 14th May

This walk is a two hour, 4.25 km circuit around Joe’s Mountain in the Berowra Valley National Park.
It will commence and conclude at the Rosemead Road Park in Hornsby (corner of Rosemead and Lochinvar). The track takes its name from what is one of the largest remaining blue gum forests in the Sydney region. The walk to Fishponds and the Ginger Meggs loop sections are ideal for those new to bushwalking.

The track is rated Moderate and has some steeper sections. It will take just over two hours to complete.

We will meet at 10.15 am at Rosemead Road Park in Hornsby. For those who wish to car-pool, we will meet at 9.30am at the Cherrybrook Community Centre carpark.
