President's Report

Picture
Tony Coote President

Welcome to the Newsletter for March 2018.
Its an early Newsletter this month, as a group of us are going on the first WPHD Probus Cruise to the South Pacific Islands for 9 days. For those who remain behind, our March General Meeting will be chaired by our new Vice President David Antonjuk. The MC for the meeting will be Colin McGowan and I’m sure it will be a great meeting.

Please note that the April General Meeting will be held one week earlier than usual on 18th April, because ANZAC Day falls on April 25th.

We have the Annual General Meeting behind us once again, and I want to thank all the committee members who have so kindly volunteered to serve our club once again, to welcome David Antonjuk to his new role of Vice President, and to thank Ian Roberts for laying the groundwork for us all to follow. Ian remains on the committee for this year as the Immediate Past President. Its hard to believe that our club has been operating for over 2½ years.

With the start of the new Probus year, you will shortly receive notification of renewal of annual fees for 2018/19. We have kept the fees at the same level as previous years. ($60).

A glance at our Activities Calendar shows what an active group of “Probians” we are. Please make the effort to come to as many activities as you can. The activity leaders put in a lot of work to find new activities and then to make them happen.  It’s disappointing when only a small number of people turn up to an activity.

Marilyn Savic is our Club Welfare Officer. When you become aware of members who are unwell or going through tough times, please let Marilyn know. She will ensure that our thoughts and best wishes are conveyed to that person, and will make any other support arrangements that are required.

I’m sure it will be another fabulous year as we embark on exciting new activities, and the friendships we have already formed become stronger and stronger.

I look forward to seeing you at our meetings and activities.

Tony Coote

Guest Speaker - Brian Powyer - Australia: Almost French

Picture
Bio
Brian Powyer is a retired school principal, and former Assistant Director Curriculum in the NSW Department of Education.

Currently he is: President of the National Trust NSW; President Australian Council of national Trusts; President of the Parramatta and District Historical Society; Member of Parramatta City Council Heritage Advisory Committee; He is a volunteer guide at Old Government House Parramatta and Hambledon Cottage Parramatta.

Today Brian is talking about the French exploration of Australia and how close our nation came to being a French rather than British colony. His presentation is titled, Australia: Almost French.

Presentation

In his presentation, Australia: Almost French, Brian Powyer examines how close our nation came to being a French rather than British colony. Why is it that there are over 400 French names around the coast of Australia? What were La Perouse’s secret orders about New South Wales? Did Napoleon Bonaparte plan to invade Australia? Which Frenchman in 1820’s said that Sydney defences were negligible? What is the Connection between Matthew Flinders and the French? Should Western Australia be a French state? These questions and a lot more will be answered during this presentation.

Gardening

At the March Bunning Garden Group, our members heard a helpful presentation on pesticides and insecticides for our gardens with a focus on the environmentally friendly products, to minimise harm to our “good insects and bugs” which we all need in our gardens (eg bees, ladybirds, leaf insects, dragonflys, etc).

Our group had good luck at the meeting, with one of our members winning one of the numerous lucky number prizes which was a large bottle of “Charlie Carp” garden fertiliser.

On 3 April our Probus Gardening, Photography and Day Trips Groups are combining for a trip to Mt Tomah Botanical Gardens.

We’re currently looking into bus hire options for the day.  Our alternate option is to ask for volunteers to drive a few other members in their cars (who could offer a donation toward running costs (petrol, etc).  There are several different guided tours available in the gardens, some walking and others in a mini bus.

Details of the Mt Tomah visit are:

Date -  3 April
Time – 9.00am

Location – meet at Heritage Park Castle Hill (entry via Heritage Park Dr, off Old Castle Hill Road).

Please contact Sue or Lorenza if you’d like more details on the Gardening Group activities.

On 5 March our Movie group met at The Castle Hill Events Cinema to see “Finding Your Feet” which was being advertised as a “hilarious and heart warming comedy”.

As well as having a lot of good laughs at things we could all relate to as be reach retirement age - most, if not all of us, were frequently dabbing away a few tears during what proved to be a very touching movie which we all enjoyed.

As usual, following the movie we all had and enjoyable lunch and catch up at one of the local cafes.

Details on our April movie day are:

Several of the movie shorts played during the “coming attraction” looked good.  We’ll be sending out details on our next movie as soon as the new releases and dates are advertised.

Ten Pin Bowling Report

We played our second game for 2018 on Friday 16 March.

Nine players rolled up which again was a good turnout given a number of regulars were absent due to the Rotary book sale.

The highlight of the day was the intense competition between Beverly & Enio Dona. Eino, under intense pressure from Beverly pulled off a remarkable 1 point win on his last bowl in game one, with both scoring in the 140’s.

Beverly was not to be outdone comfortably winning the second game with a score in the 150’s.

David Turner also bowled very well.

Our next game is scheduled for 2pm, Friday, 20 April.

As advised previously, I will be texting those who have participated and those who have expressed an interest in playing to ascertain who wishes to participate on that day.

Again for those members who have not previously expressed an interest to participate and wish to do so, there will be a registration sheet available at the Club’s monthly meeting. Alternatively, you can contact me by email.

We are looking for new people to join us, so please come along.  Your standard of play isn’t important.

24 members and guests enjoyed our trip to “Mama Mia” at the Capitol Theatre on Wednesday 14 March 2018. The show featuring the music of ABBA was truly spectacular and enjoyed by all. Thanks again for your support!!

Our theatre party to “Book of Mormon” on Wednesday 16 May 2018 at the Lyric Theatre has also attracted a great response with all 24 spots now completely filled with initial deposits for the ticket price now paid.

Due to the strong response to “Book of Mormon” we will again provide a 24 seat coach to take our party to and from Star City for an additional $20 per person whom I will contact separately by email

Picture
The next show we will be arranging is “Strictly Ballroom” the musical presented by Willoughby Theatre Company 19 May - 3 June 2018 at The Concourse Theatre Chatswood. Details to follow shortly.

“Strictly Ballroom” the musical is the inspiring story of a championship ballroom dancer who defies all the rules to follow his heart. This uplifting and courageous tale originated as a stage play that Baz Luhrmann created as a student at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) in Sydney back in 1984.

Walking Report

Glebe Foreshore Walk

Eleven of us braved the wet weather and completed the gentle walk around the Glebe Foreshore to the Fish Markets. The rain seemed to stop for just long enough for us to complete our walk.

The views were lovely and all of the councils involved are to be commended for the manner in which they have landscaped the waterfronts and cleaned up what was historically an unattractive area of Sydney.

The ride on the Sydney Light Rail was a “first” for most of us.

We all enjoyed a nice feed of fresh seafood for lunch.

Some even purchased additional supplies to take home for dinner.

Narrabeen Lagoon Trail

Our next walk is the Narrabeen Lagoon Trail. This is a wonderful and accessible walk on the Northern Beaches that explores the stunning bushland and lagoon views. There are bridges over rivers, quiet spots to enjoy the view, cafes to refuel at, as well as toilets and picnic areas.

Completed in February 2015, this trail is very popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists as it winds its way around the idyllic Narrabeen Lake. It is a very easy circuit of 8.5 kilometres that will take about 2hrs and 30 minutes to complete.

Date:     Monday 9th April     (sorry, this is the only date I have available)
Grade: Very easy on a smooth and hardened path
Getting there: We will car-pool from Cherrybrook Community Centre – Departure 9.30am

Wine & Cheese

Wendy & Bob Carritt hosted the Wine & Cheese night on March 9th.

It was a Hawaiian themed night and everyone came dressed in a variety of colourful clothing-grass skirts, sarongs, floral shirts and the food had a Hawaiian twist. A great night was enjoyed by all.

The next wine & cheese is on Friday 13th April, 7.30pm at Shenston'e residence.
