President's Report
Ian Roberts President
Welcome to the Newsletter for November 2017.
We received a reply from Matt Kean MP to my letter to the Hornsby Council (copied to the MP) regarding parking. It was positive in that he is keen for some follow up on the issue following the Council’s review of the position during the last quarter of this year. We will have to wait to see if we receive any feedback from the Council regarding their survey and then follow it through with the Mr Kean MP and the Mayor if necessary.
Sue Hackett and I went to a Cluster 5 meeting about guest speakers during the month. The discussion was a genuine sharing of positive feedback from all the clubs present about which guest speakers they found successful at their clubs. Sue has already followed upon a few names and contacts and has arranged several future guest speaker arrangements. I am looking forward to this month’s guest speaker from the Black Dog Institute. He has been there and come through the other side with a positive message of what can be achieved.
As I advised last month, our AGM will be held in February next year rather than March because of a clash with the cruise. The AGM requires the election of the Committee for the following year and we are calling for nominations for the various positions. If you feel that you would like to discuss the possibility of nominating for a position, please feel free to approach any member of the Committee. Now that the Club has settled into an “ongoing” mode, the roles are not onerous and do not demand a lot of your time. The nominations need to be with the Secretary (Cathy Turner) by the end of January.
At the last Management Committee meeting, it was agreed that we should simplify the structure of the Committee. As a result, the number of people formally elected to the Committee (at the AGM) will be reduced from 16 to 9. It is essential that each position has backup to cover for absences. However, those backup positions will not be elected to the Committee but will, instead, provide help and assistance to the Committee member and act for the role during the member’s absence.
It was also decided that the annual fees for the 2019 year will remain at $60 and the joining fee for any new members at $30. Whilst we are almost there, we are still in the process of building a cash balance equivalent to a year’s expenses as recommended by PSPL.
As we draw closer to the end of the Probus year, it is timely to remind you that the Constitution requires that each member attends at least 50% of meetings during a year. It is, however, understood that there can be circumstances (such as family commitments, work patterns, travel and so on) which may prevent a member from attending meetings on Wednesdays. It is also recognised that a number of members who can’t make monthly meetings are often quite active when it comes to attending activities and events. If you cannot attend Wednesday meetings, would you please let Cathy Turner (Secretary) or Lynne Henderson (Membership) know of your situation.
The purpose of Probus is to provide Fun, Fellowship and Friendship for the members. It has been another great month for activities. Our Club has a large number of activities for everyone to enjoy and participate in, and a great group of people. The more you participate and join in the activities, the more you will get out of the Club and the fun that fellowship and friendship provides.
Remember, as always, if you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact any of the Committee and let them know.
I look forward to seeing you again at the next meeting.
