President's Report

Picture
Ian Roberts President

Welcome to the Newsletter for October 2017.

After several members raised the issue of parking, I wrote to the Mayor (copied to the local MP) on 24th August outlining the issue and proposing some solutions.  I received a reply from the Mayor on 27th September.  In essence, he has said that:
  • Parking within the marked spaces is necessary to preserve the landscaping
  • Council is not able to provide parking exemptions or parking “permits”.
  • He has requested Council officers to undertake parking surveys during the 4th school term to gauge whether parking supply is adequate.

The conclusion therefore is that I doubt there will be much action forthcoming from Council.  However, we will discuss the options at the next management meeting.

PSPL has divided Clubs into “clusters”.  We are in Cluster 5.  The purpose of the cluster groups is to share ideas primarily to assist those clubs experiencing difficulties attracting members.  The first meeting of Cluster 5 was held last Tuesday 12th September.  Judging from the Minutes of the meeting, the intention of the clusters has spread much more widely than membership and I doubt that Cluster 5 will add much value to our Club.  However, I will keep a close eye on developments as they occur.

As we discussed at our last meeting, we will be holding our AGM in February next year rather than March.  We have received advice from our auditor that he will be able to complete the audit of the Club finances for presentation at the meeting.
We are calling for nominations for Committee positions.  If you feel that you would like to discuss the possibility of nominating for a position, please feel free to approach any member of the Committee.  Now that the Club has settled into an “ongoing” mode, the roles do not demand a lot of your time. The Committee has settled now meets each second month rather than monthly.  Descriptions of each role are available if you would like to follow it up.

The purpose of Probus is to provide Fun, Fellowship and Friendship for the members.  It has been another great month for activities.  Our Club has a large number of activities for everyone to enjoy and participate in, and a great group of people. The more you participate and join in the activities, the more you will get out of the Club and the fun that fellowship and friendship provides.

Remember, as always, if you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact any of the Committee and let them know.

I look forward to seeing you again at the next meeting.

Ian Roberts

Four of us went along to a Meet the Author function at Ettalong Diggers Club on Thursday 28th September and had a lovely time. The author was Karen Davis who was a New South Wales police officer for twenty years. She started her career on the streets of Newtown and then moved on to work as a detective and in undercover operations dealing with organised crime.  It was real life situations that triggered the inspiration to write.

Cycling

Picture
The October ride on Wednesday 11th October was cancelled due to rain and only a few people available on the day. So we will try again on Wednesday November 8th. We will circle Iron Cove. Its all on cycleways and should be a very pleasant ride with lots of photo opportunities and places to stop for a coffee or lunch.

I suggest we meet at the Community Centre at Cherrybrook at 9.30 AM, carpool where possible, and make our way from there.  We will drive to the intersection of Henley Marine Drive and Heath Street which is next to Timbrell Park at Rodd Point near Five Dock. The ride starts nearby.

Have a look at these links for details of this and other rides around Sydney.

http://short-walks.com.au/new-south-wales/sydney/bay-run/

Please let me know if you would like to come along. It should be a fabulous ride. Lets try to get a big group and make the day a lot of fun!

Just to confirm we will leave at 9.30 AM from the community centre.

Day Trips (Bus/Train/Ferry)

Picture
Arthur Philip’s Sydney - Tuesday 10th October
We were very lucky to have our own knowledgeable historian Brian Powyer, guide us around Circular Quay ( formally Semi-circular Quay) and the Rocks area. He took us to some familiar places but with Brian’s guidance we had our eyes opened to the evidence that still remains of Arthur Philip’s Sydney.

I had no idea that a commemorative plaque and a Queen Anne flag still marked the spot where Arthur Philip first raised the British flag. Brian told stories of the past that fascinated everyone in the group.

A huge thank you to Brian for giving up his time to take us on this guided tour.

Gordon is a short and narrow Council run golf course.  Its quite hilly, and even though there are a lot of par 3’s, those of us who walked were worn out by the end of 18 holes.

There were seven of us. We all had a great round of golf and a drink afterwards at the clubhouse.

Opal Card Newcastle Overnight Trip

The Opal Card Newcastle trip on Tuesday 17 & Wednesday 18 October was a huge success with 16 members coming along.  We arrived at the Newcastle Train Interchange around 11am, which had opened the previous Sunday.  After catching the shuttle bus, which dropped us off near the Crowne Plaza Honeysuckle Hotel, we had lunch at a great cafe just across the street.

Dinner was at the Honeysuckle hotel which, like the Crowne Plaza Hotel, overlooks the Newcastle Harbour.
Most of us had breakfast back at the cafe & we all then hopped on the "Newcastle Scenic & Historic Tram" which took us around the historical areas of Newcastle, dropping us off at the Newcastle Interchange to catch the 1.30pm (actually 1.22pm - half of us made it, the other half caught the next train at 1.35pm.....) train back to Hornsby.

Walking Report October

We enjoyed a lovely day walking the old Lapstone Zig Zag railway loop. We even managed to attract a few grandkids (it was school holidays after all). We saw the remains of the old Lucasville station and continued down to the knapsack viaduct.

This viaduct was an impressive piece of engineering construction in its day consisting of seven arches and is over 120 metres long and 39 metres high. Sadly, today it only functions as a pedestrian or cycling crossing. After a short break we returned to the carpark and then proceeded to Glenbrook for the compulsory coffee stop.
