President's Report

Picture
Ian Roberts
Ian Roberts President

Welcome to the new July 2017 Newsletter.

Jeanette and I have just returned from 6 weeks overseas – 3 weeks’ touring the Baltics, Russia and Copenhagen, and 3 weeks’ baby sitting in Montreal.  It was great to catch up with our brand-new granddaughter and our grandson and, of course, with our son and his wife.  We have come back home to recover!

The Club has been in Tony’s highly capable hands for the past 6 weeks.  My sincere thanks to him for standing in for me.

A big welcome to the seven new members inducted at the June meeting - Elizabeth Wojtczak, Irene Johnson, Helen Baptiste, Chris Ellis, Gary Ellis, Barbara Taylor and Enio Dona.

It has now been 12 months since the Foundation Meeting for our Club was held on 27th July last year.  So, it’s a great big happy 1st birthday to us!!  We plan to celebrate the occasion at the coming meeting.

When I reflect on the past 12 months, a lot of water has gone under the bridge.  We have finally completed all the administration to get the Club established.  Most of the Management Committee have been in place for 12 months and each member has settled into his or her role very comfortably to provide effective leadership to the Club.

We have 23 Activity Groups which are now well and truly up and running with highly capable Activity Leaders, all of which is being efficiently coordinated by Glenda.   The activities are all being well attended.

All of this fits very well with the purpose of Probus – to provide Fun, Fellowship and Friendship for the members.  The more you participate in Club activities, the more you will get to know other members, develop friends and extract the fun of participating in activities.  We are well on the way to establishing a “Club of first choice”.

Remember, as always, if you have any ideas or suggestions, please contact any of the Committee and let them know.

I look forward to seeing you again at the next meeting.

Ian Roberts

Bridge

Picture

We still have not had any more members come forward who want to play Bridge so we still only have the 4 who have expressed an interest. Please, if there are any Bridge Players out there, who want to have a social game, then please let us know --- you will be most welcome.

We will have our 1st get together on the 4th Tuesday of July --- 25th --- at our place in Cherrybrook and play from 10:30AM to about 2:30PM with a BYO Lunch in the middle --- Coffee, Tea and Biscuits will be provided and we hope everyone has some fun.

We are hoping that there are more Bridge Players out there who would enjoy this small, casual Group – you do not need to be a member of a Bridge Club. You just need to know the basics. Interested parties can contact us.

Gardening

Over the last month we've had an enjoyable outing to Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden in Lavender Bay.  The day started by meeting at a local cafe for a cappuccino to warm us up and get us ready for our walk.

After thoroughly  exploring the gardens, sculptures, and magic views of Sydney harbour, we caught the train to the QVB for a nice (late) lunch and friendly conversation before heading home.
At our July Bunnings Gardening Group session we heard a very interesting talk on roses by a long term employee of Swains Nursery, who provided helpful advice on:

- how and when to prune roses to get the best flowers
- various fertilisers and pest controls for different problems
- the presenter also happily answered lots of questions from the group

As always, we were given a free plant.    After the presentation we all enjoyed our nice free cappuccinos from the Bunnings cafe and a good chat.

A future Gardening Group outing to Nutcote - the home of May Gibbs, Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, the Big Bad Banksia Man, etc at Neutral Bay is planned for Monday 11 September.

More details on this outing will be made available closer to the date.

Come along and join us 2nd Thursday of the month 10:30 for 11:00. Let me know so we can keep a seat for you if you are interested.

Golf

Picture

Six of us played 9 holes at Asquith in perfect conditions.

Asquith is quite hilly and is a challenging course. Water is a constant threat.

The highlight was a chip from the fairway by Douglas which hit the pin and bounced just off the green.  Not to be outdone, Douglas put the ball in the hole next shot – a monster of a putt!
A couple of leisurely drinks finished off the afternoon nicely.

The next golf afternoon is planned for Friday 11th August at Muirfield at 1PM.

If there is enough interest we may also plan a golfing trip away later in the year.

Please sign up for future events if you would like to join us.  Its very casual.

All are welcome regardless of your level of play.

Opal Card Overnight Trips

Picture
For our maiden trip (Tue-Wed, 17-18th October) we have selected Newcastle/Honeysuckle) which features:

A unique city geography and 200 year story has helped create distinctive precincts - all alive with energy. Explore and uncover the flavour and allure of the city’s streetscapes and waterfronts - each with its own individual character.

Honeysuckle and the Harbour - For a meal with a view (and accommodation)
Newcastle harbour is home to Honeysuckle, a major waterfront rejuvenation project transforming the previously industrial landscape. Working wharves are becoming places of play with the creation of foreshore promenades and open squares offering waterfront cafes and restaurants – all with glorious views.

Newcastle East - Where the city meets the ocean and harbour
This is Newcastle’s oldest precinct and was the original town site. The area affords delightful contrasts, with the city centre surrounded by beach on one side and harbour on the other. As Australia’s second oldest city, the streetscapes abound with gracious heritage buildings and this precinct showcases some of the nation’s most significant sites.

Stockton - For maritime history and a spectacular coastal landscape
A short ferry ride away from Newcastle is Stockton. Stockton has a rich maritime history and has seen over 100 ships wrecked on its shores, one of which has been incorporated into the 'Shipwreck Walk' along Stockton Breakwall. Stockton is also famous for its massive sand dunes, the largest moving coastal sand mass in the southern hemisphere. The sand dunes have formed the background of many films, including the popular Australian 'Mad Max' films.

Whilst our short stay will possibly focus on the above precincts others include:
Civic Cultural Precinct - Where Newcastle's cultural scene comes alive
City Centre - A place of revitalisation and transition, a mixture of the raw and refined
The Junction - Newcastle's boutique shopping village
Hamilton - For a multicultural mix and old world treasures, and
Cooks Hill - For the young and hip (I’m sure we qualify).

In summary has all the ingredients for a fantastic two day/ overnight trip.

Please save the date; Tue-Wed, 17-18th October.

For next month’s newsletter we will have specific details available, after which we will require numbers in order to make reservations etc.

Walking Report for July
Fourteen of us enjoyed the walk around Bi-Centennial Park on a lovely day. The tide was out, which meant that the wetland water levels were slightly receded. However there was still plenty of bird life and the black swans and various waders were plentiful and a pleasure to see so close to our urban sprawl.  It is an unusual area with old ship hulks in the water and a nice boardwalk path through the mangroves.

Most of us were fascinated to hear the story about the green and gold frog that prevented the development of the old brick pit. Perhaps the planners could have come up with a better scheme to protect one of our iconic native amphibians rather than leaving such an eye sore as the brick pit ring. However, we managed to cover the 6 or 7 kilometre walk in about two and half hours, which fitted in very well with lunchtime, which we enjoyed at the Waterview Café.

Next Walk:   TBA
