President’s Report - July 2026

Would you believe half the year has gone!?! Time is running too fast! Makes me realize we need to fill every day, so we enjoy our lives to the full.

The winter weather has had some beautiful days. Our walk on Tuesday, led by Enio, was a delightful time to enjoy the sunshine and each other’s company. School holidays have kept some grandparents very busy but soon it will be time to relax and have time for us.

Our birthday meeting is nearly upon us. 91 have responded so hopefully it will be a great event. The committee, of Helen Games, Sue Hackett, Andrew Little and Terry Ridge ably led by Paul Day, have worked hard to ensure the day will be heaps of fun, fellowship and friendship as we celebrate 10 years of our club. Dress to impress and if you like, with a touch of blue and gold.

Members are looking forward to a break in Nelsons Bay. Thanks to Max for his organisation. As well, there are all the other activities in full swing. Thank you to our activity leaders. Maybe it’s time to try a new activity.

Several members have had the winter colds, coughs, RSV with a few visiting hospitals!! Please stay warm, stay well and eat well to get through the rest of the winter. Remember we are only a phone call away for a catch up.

Here’s to the next 10 years of our fabulous club!   Hip Hip Hooray!!

Welfare - July2026

Since returning on Monday, I have been catching up with members who were recovering from knee surgery and it’s lovely to hear they have all made great progress with rehabilitation.

A few members have had hospital admissions day stays, overnight or a few days and have been well supported by their friends in the club.

There has been the usual winter respiratory illnesses that a number of members have been affected by and recovering from.
Please don’t hesitate to let me know of any member you are aware of who needs a chat or helping hand.

Get On Board And Read’ - GOBAR! Challenge

GOBAR! Get on Board and Read! Now up and running, from April 26 to March 27.

GOBAR June-July Reads:
The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton: Morton is a terrific writer with attention to detail in historical fiction. This book flicks between the late 1800’s, early 1900’s the 60’s-70s and early 2000’s and sometimes you need a whiteboard to keep track. The chapters clearly outline which period, but sometimes…. A little girl is abandoned on a ship headed to Australia from England. A wharf worker finds her and with his wife they bring her up – you could get away with this sort of thing in the early 1900’s. Ther story develops around the theme of family secrets, love, loss and identity, through the eyes of three women across different generations. It was quite a ripping yarn running across the historical events of those times. A very long read though so make sure you have the time if you are borrowing.

The Strange Disappearance of Kitty Fox by Lisa Hall: Lily Jones finds herself transported back to the 1950s and becomes involved in solving the disappearance of rising Hollywood start Kitty Fox. The reader enjoyed the book and then found out that it is part of a series of 4 and now would like to read the others in the series.

Grace Tame by Grace Tame: Book Club read. Grace Tame’s memoir. She recounts her life experiences with honesty, humour and quite a lot of swearing which the reader wasn’t sure added to the narrative. It was supposed that that was the way she speaks. Explores her early life, trauma and challenges, including her experiences of ongoing child sexual abuse. The reader was glad to have read the book but was not all together sure that it was an enjoyable read.

The Artist’s Secret by Alexandra Joel: A talented art historian, Wren Summers, lands her dream job at the Sydney Art Museum. It seems she can finally leave her unconventional background behind. A family secret sees Wren head to New York to find the missing girl who holds the key to this mystery, and to make a fresh start in the world of international art auctions.

Beach Read by Emily Henry: January is a hopeless romantic who narrates her life like she's the lead in a blockbuster movie. Gus is a serious literary type who thinks true love is fairy-tale. January and Gus have more in common than you'd think - they're both broke. They've got crippling writer's block. And they need to write bestsellers before summer ends. Soooo, they take on a bet to swap genres to see who gets published first!

A Month of Sundays by Liz Byrsk: another Book Club read. Four women have shared a decade of friendship through an online book club. They’ve never met. Adele is preparing for retirement so invites the other three to house-sit with her in the Blue Mountains, for a whole month of girl bliss. Another search for identity of the self and understanding of the others through the books they have chosen. Most in the group really enjoyed it.

If You Didn’t Kill Her by Annie Taylor: She was wrongfully convicted. Now she is free to clear her name and catch a killer. But will the murderer find her first? A bit drawn out but quite an enjoyable read.

The Final Target by Nora Roberts: a very enjoyable book. A young author becomes the object of a fan’s obsession. As usual, Nora Roberts has a twist ending.

The Sisterhood Rules by Kathy Lette: A light, humorous read by Lette, about twin sisters and their mum, and the men in their lives.

The Cursed Road by Laura McCluskey: The second book by this author and equally as enjoyable as her first. A young girl is found dead on an isolated road. Was her death caused by the local deer hunting lodge? Close by is an old castle - was that family guilty of her death? Women have been going missing in the area for decades. This adds to the mystery. A great read.

Another recommendation for audio listeners:
The ABC Listen app puts up quite a few books that you can listen to for free. That’s where I listened to The Forgotten Garden. Only real disadvantage was that I couldn’t tell how long the book was and this one was well over 20 hours of listening. I google that bit of info.

Of course, the library is a rich resource of audio books and ebooks. You can join libraries out of your area too. I joined two recently – Blacktown and Castle Hill so I had plenty of scope to find books I wanted to read.
Libby app is best for library hopping as it stores all your cards at once – down side – generally not able to extend the borrow period if there are people waiting.

With BorrowBox, you must sign out of one library and then sign into another. A bit annoying but if you really want a book then it’s good to have options. If you have more than one device you can use each one for a different library and that offers a solution of sorts. You will receive notification when it’s ready for download.

And who doesn’t like to just visit a library if you’re into the hard stuff!! Castle Hill and Blacktown have very nice cafés, and parking underneath isn’t too bad during the week.

Challenge yourself to read more. Calculate the average number of books you would read in a month, multiply it by the number of months up to the end of March ‘27 … +ONE more. Then you are in the Challenge! Choose your own books, post about it, and enjoy the rundowns of the other readers’ books. Search WPH&D PROBUS BOOK CHALLENGE on Facebook.
If you wish to join but don’t do Facebook, send me an email and I’ll put it into the page on your behalf.

Hope to see more of you join up for the next challenge.

Book Club Report - July 2026

At our meeting on Thursday 25th June, we discussed A Month of Sundays by Liz Byrski.  It was a popular choice with the members enjoying the book.

We are currently reading The Ninth Life of a Diamond Miner a memoir by Grace Tame.

We meet next on Thursday 6th August.

Leader - Bev Davison

Picture

Grace Tame has never walked on middle ground.

From a young age, her life was defined by uncertainty - by trauma and strength, sadness and hope, terrible lows and wondrous highs. As a teenager she found the courage to speak up after experiencing awful and ongoing child sexual abuse. This fight to find her voice would not be her last.

In 2021 Grace stepped squarely into the public eye as the Australian of the Year, and was the catalyst for a tidal wave of conversation and action. Australians from all walks of life were inspired and moved by her fire and passion. Here she was using her voice, and encouraging others to use theirs too.

The Ninth Life of a Diamond Miner is Grace's story, in Grace's words, on Grace's terms. Like Grace, it is sharply intelligent, deeply felt and often blisteringly funny. And, as with all her work, it offers a constructive and optimistic vision for a better future for all of us.

Cycling Report for July 2026

The July 2026 cycling ride commenced from Silverwater Park and headed off to the Waterview Cafe in Bicentennial Park. Riding along the southern side of the Parramatta River, the group then went up through the Newington Armoury site and the Newington Nature Reserve to Olympic Park. Passing by the Olympic Stadium and Aquatic Centre, the group headed to Bicentennial Park for the obligatory coffee break at the Waterview Cafe.

The group then followed the cycle ways back down to the Parramatta to check on the progress of the new light rail bridge being constructed over the Parramatta Rive adjacent to Wentworth Point.
 (Approx. distance – 16.2kms).

The next ride will commence from Rydalmere Ferry Terminal Car Park and follow the bike paths to Parramatta Park and return. (Approx. distance – 15kms).

Start time: 9.30am

We will stop for a coffee along the way.

Please bring your helmet, water and sunscreen.

Join Moonshadow TQC onboard their whale watching cruise venturing out to the ‘Humpback highway’ for the northern Whale migration during May-November for amazing viewing opportunities to see Whales.

You will never forget seeing the awesome bulk of a humpback whale, up to 18 metres long and weighing 40 tonnes! Being the most surface active of all the whales, it is possible that you will see spectacular displays – spy hops, pectoral slaps, body rolls and … the breathtaking breach.

Enjoy entertaining and informative commentary from the captain. You may also see some Australian Fur Seals, Common & Bottlenose dolphins, and view some of the outer islands

With great viewing decks (both inside and outside), you can be sure you are getting the best view of these friendly giants. A fully licensed bar is available on board for beverages, and snacks.

MV Osprey; Departs Dock C, d’Albora Marina 10.00am.
Passengers are required to be on dock ready for boarding 15 minutes prior to the departure time.

For those interested in walking, we suggest you walk from The Landmark to the marina (via the shops, cafes and breakfast options). This walk requires about 15min, excluding deviations. We suggest we meet in the hotel foyer to depart at 9.15am which allows time for a coffee along the way.

Alternatively paid parking fees applies to both the Nelson Bay CBD and d'Albora Marina foreshore. Standard rates are generally $3.50/hour on weekdays.

Afternoon walk 1.30pm
Then following the cruise and allowing time for lunch we meet back at the marina (adjacent Dock C) at 1.30pm (‘Red Neds’ is a great pie shop at 17 Stockton Street) to walk along the waterfront to Little Beach and return along the same picturesque walkway. This is an easy walk with great views.

Queensland Great Central Outback Trail
Sunday 1st to Wednesday 11th Aug 2027

We have spoken to Trade Travel and agreed it’s best they don’t provide a price until after the air fares become available, generally twelve months prior to departure. Subsequently we are working on having a priced itinerary for our September newsletter.

As per the itinerary below this is a fantastic opportunity to experience the central Queensland outback with Trade Travel.
Until they can provide us with a price, Trade Travel are not seeking a deposit and we suggest their Itinerary is viewed as a DRAFT.

Trade Travel’s minimum trip number is twenty and our accommodation at Longreach (three nights in sixteen luxury glamping tents), will restrict us to thirty-two, less with potential single supplements.
A 2025 Trade Travel trip to Southwest Queensland was $5,000. Whilst a similar trip, it excluded Longreach, glamping tents and the flight back to Brisbane, therefore expect to pay more.

If you would like your name added to the expressions of interest list:
  • save the date and
  • let me know
Once we have a priced itinerary, we will notify those who have expressed interest. Dependant on the timing either via the newsletter or an email. After that we will leave it with Trade Travel to prioritise attendees based on receipt of their $200pp deposit.
Any questions, please give me a call.

Garden Group – July 2026

Six Probus members attended the Cacti talk presented by the Five Dock RSL Orchid Club at Bunnings in Rydalmere. Some key points from the Cacti talk were: the best time to take Cacti cuttings is during spring and autumn and to keep the cuttings in cinnamon for about 5 days before planting in soil.

Despite there only being a small group from our Probus, five out of our six members won lucky door prizes. Afterwards we had lunch at Sal’s Place Café in Rydalmere.

Our next Garden Group day will be visiting:

The Sydney Cherry Festival – Auburn Botanic Gardens
The Sydney Cherry Blossom was launched in 2011, as part of a range of arts festivals and events, and has since grown into Cumberland Council’s largest event that really showcases the Auburn Botanic Gardens. The iconic festival runs for nine days each year and attracts thousands of visitors who come to experience the fairytale wonderland of more than 200 pink cherry sakura blossom trees in full bloom, set against the stunning Japanese Gardens in Auburn.
Picture
The Cumberland Mayor is quoted as saying that “The Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival is more than just a beautiful sight, it’s a celebration of Japanese culture, creativity, and community,” There are hands on workshops such as origami and cultural performances. Here’s what’s in store this year:

Probus Photography July 2026 Report

As usual we started and closed our meeting with a short music video. This month it was an AI video of Hollywood in the 1905’s with all the stars. This is not photography but adds some fun to the night.
This was followed by a short presentation on how to take images in harsh light and a review of our set subject and open images.

Image of the Month: Set Subject Shadows

The set subject for this meeting was shadows. Congratulations to Andrew Little for this wonderful sunset image of the dead trees with their shadows in lake Mulwala.
Picture
There were several great shadow images this month, they can be viewed on the club probus photography site.

Images of the Month: Open

Congratulations to Ian Roberts for this stunning waterfall photograph taken in Croatia.  Ian focused on a small portion of the falls to bring the eye closer to the subject. The image has excellent composition and colour contrast.

Activities

Everyone is welcome to join our photography group, most of our photographers only use I-phones or equivalent.  We do have a very small number with the more expensive equipment, but they do not dominate our meetings.

Our photography group organises outings and trips away that are open to the photography group only.  We have had some comments that others in the club were not aware of these events and outings.  To become aware of these events come to our meetings and it does not matter what kind of photographer you may be, our nights are highly social.

Facebook Site

If you are a member of our Probus Club you can access our photography site with a request. People who are not members cannot access the site. The link to our Facebook site is:

September Set Subject

Images taken in harsh light. This is challenging, please refer to the video on the Facebook site for some ideas.

Next Meeting

The August meeting has been cancelled due to the Nelson Bay trip as we have many our photographers on that trip.

The next meeting will be Wednesday September 2.
