President's Report

President’s Report - September 2024
Our activity leaders must be doing something right as I am only hearing great reports from members on what fun they are having, mixing with their friends and enjoying interesting activities! Please remember to let your activity leader know what a great job they are doing as it can be a thankless job sometimes and time and effort has been put in behind the scenes to ensure that the activity runs smoothly. With the weather now a bit warmer we are able to get out and enjoy the sunshine and get some good exercise!
We are still looking for a few people to step up and organize a dining out function. As the organizer you get to choose where you want to go and weather it’s for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner …. it’s your choice! Please see Stuart if you want to arrange a date.
Only a few more sleeps and those of you heading off to Norfolk Island are getting excited! Ros our travel agent has put together an interesting itinerary which will keep us all busy. A big thankyou to Max who has put in a lot of work to make this trip happen.
We are getting to the busy social time of the year with many catchups with friends before Christmas. So a reminder to keep Wednesday 18th December free for our Christmas Party. Stuart will give more details at the next meeting.
Nikki Siddle will be formally inducted into the club on Wednesday. We are looking forward to seeing Nikki at quite a few of our activities.
Looking forward to seeing you at the meeting on Wednesday.

Welfare
WELFARE REPORT September 2024
This month has seen a couple of hospital visits by members.
One will be returning for more surgery, and we wish him well.
The other has returned to the Doctor after a not so successful operation. This has been rectified by the way of a needle which has seemed to work.
Nothing else to report.
Time to start the Chrissy shopping so you don’t get caught up in the rush once December comes. My kids tell me I’m crazy but it works for me.
Good luck and good health to you all. Please let me know if anyone needs our support.
Toni Smith & Terry Ridge – Welfare Officers

August Guest Speaker - Peter Plowman - The Sinking Of The Titanic

Peter Plowman
Peter was formerly a lecturer on cruise ships and built up a wide selection of talks, one of which we heard last year, and another most recently In April this year “Australia under attack”.
He has kindly agreed to step in at short notice due to an unexpected event preventing our scheduled speaker from attending. He will give one of his most popular cruise ship talks on the sinking of the Titanic.
Club Covid 19 Policy
We have set down a Covid 19 policy for the club. Essentially we will abide by the NSW health guidelines. We ask all members to respect the health and wellbeing of their fellow members, and therefore not attend activities unless they are fully vaccinated. We have no desire to get into a situation where we need to physically check every attendee to determine their vaccination status. We are relying on the integrity of our members and the fact that they are endangering their friends if they do not abide by this policy.

‘The Texted Best Thing’ - TBT! Challenge
TBT! The Texted Best Thing is running from March ‘24 to end February ‘25. Our challenge 100 books, and already we are up to 72 – edging to our 100 target. You can still join us to help reach this goal. You never know what might grab you.
You can join at any time – just set your own challenge from your starting point to the end of February next year. A guide is to calculate how many books you read in a month times the number of months you are in the challenge… +ONE more. Read your own choice of book, post about it, and enjoy the rundowns of the other readers’ books. Search WPH&D PROBUS BOOK CHALLENGE on Facebook. If you wish to join but don’t do Facebook, send me an email and I’ll put it into the page on your behalf.
August-September reads:
Wifedom by Anna Funder: The author reviews the life of George Orwell’s wife, Eileen. Mostly written out of history and overshadowed by her famous husband. What a life they lived though, especially the courage and determination of Eileen. She followed him to Spain during the uprising mid last century and showed enormous courage working behind the scenes, putting herself in danger many times. When Orwell eventually shows up from the battles, she takes charge of their escape. Her whole life was spent bending to her belief in his brilliance, and not ever acknowledging her own inspiration in his creativity. So unfair that she died so tragically on the operating table when she suffered from cancer. A terrific story with reflection from the author about her own literary journey.
Soulmate by Sally Hepworth: Book Club read. This author has a specialty in twists that you don’t see coming. Gabe lives near this cliff and has become quite the hero with the number of suicides he has prevented. A woman comes to a well known suicide cliff. He tries to stop her from jumping – but did he? Did she really intend to jump? Wait – doesn’t he know her? Doesn’t his wife know her? Didn’t he work for her husband before he was sacked? Secrets and lies push loyalties to the brink.
Her Time to Shine by Fiona McCallum: The reader wished it wasn’t her time, and also that she hadn’t wasted her time reading it. A woman moves to a small town to find herself. Sometimes you can try too hard.
Daylight by David Baldacci: a great read. An FBI agent I in search of her twin sister who disappeared 30 years before. Her search becomes intertwined with other cases including a military one. In the reader’s opinion – one of his best books he has written.
One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig: Book 1 of 2, and one with magic. Elspeth meets a mysterious highway man and is thrust into a world of shadow and deception. Together they embark on a dangerous quest. The reader is looking forward to reading Book 2.
Two Twisted Crowns by Rachel Gillig: and this is the sequel. The Kingdom is in peril and it’s a dangerous journey to right a 500 year old wrong. It did get a bit slow towards the end but still ok. The peril of sequels!
Paper Chains by Nicola Moriarty: an enjoyable book about relationships, friends and families. Hannah and India are new best friends. Hannah is running from her life in Sydney and India knows she is hiding something. She is determined to figure it out, but she has her own secret, currently sealed in a love letter that is making it’s journey across Europe in a most unconventional way.
Hope to see more of you join.

Picture a lovely cottage on a cliff, with sloping lawns, walking paths, and beautiful flowers. It’s Gabe and Pippa Gerard’s dream home in a sleepy coastal town. But their perfect house hides something sinister. The tall cliffs have become a popular spot for people to end their lives. Over the past several months, Gabe comes to their rescue, literally talking them off the ledge. Until one day, he doesn’t. When Pippa discovers Gabe knew the victim, the questions spiral. . . .Did the victim jump? Was she pushed? And would Gabe, the love of Pippa’s life, her soulmate . . . lie? As the perfect façade of their marriage begins to crack, the deepest and darkest secrets begin to unravel. Because sometimes, the most convincing lies are the ones we tell ourselves. |

Cycling Group: September 2024
The Probus Cycling Group enjoyed a nice spring day for this month’s ride.
The ride commenced at the Ermington boat ramp and headed west along the northern side of the Parramatta River. The group crossed over the river at Silverwater Road Bridge and headed back east along the southern side of the river.
The ride then continued through Armoury Park and Newington parklands to the southern end of Newington before crossing over Haslams Creek and heading up to Olympic Park. Passing around the indoor arena, football stadium and aquatic centre, the group headed to the Waterview cafe in Bicentennial Park for a well earned break with coffee and refreshments.
After the break, the ride continued through Bicentennial Park up to Rhodes before crossing back over the Parramatta River via the rail bridge to Meadowbank, before the quick dash to the finish point at the Ermington boat ramp Carpark.
The ride was relatively flat, with a few inclines and a couple of bridge crossings. The ride distance was approximately 19kms (from start to finish).
NOTE: Next month’s ride will commence from Parramatta Park and follow the bike paths to Meadowbank Ferry Terminal and return. (Approx. distance – 18kms).
Date: Wednesday 9th October 2024 (To be confirmed pending numbers).
Start time: 9.30am
We will stop for a coffee along the way.
Please bring your helmet, water and sunscreen.
Please let me know, if you are interested in joining the ride.

Jazz At The Pines
Everyone who braved the cold on Sunday 15th September to join us at Jazz at the Pines really enjoyed the experience of a lazy sunny, Sunday afternoon with great music, lots of food and drink and wonderful friends. The gardens of Roughly House were very pleasant and we all agreed that we should do this again soon.

Activities
As with previous trips, we are working on providing a group activity or two. We will also provide various options you can do at your leisure.
Why Visit Newcastle
From the golden sand beaches with stunning coastal walks to architectural wonders where the present pays homage to the city’s industrial past, Newcastle doesn’t disappoint.
Newcastle is where the city meets the sea, from museums and craft markets, to stunning coastal views and world-class beach breaks. This includes the famous Merewether Beach, home to the international surfing competition, Surfest. Take a scenic walk from our hotel to Newcastle Beach, maybe via Nobbys Beach and its Lighthouse along the breakwall, where you can watch a coal ship being ushered into the harbour by hard working tug boats. Maybe even spot a friendly dolphin or two off the coastline. You may reduce your walking distances by catching the light rail.
With a number of historical sites including the breathtaking Newcastle Ocean Baths and The Lock-Up — one of Newcastle’s most significant heritage buildings — culture vultures will be kept busy exploring the wonders and architecture of the area’s rich and proud history.
Newcastle also has a unique city geography and a 200-year history that helped create distinctive precincts - all alive with energy. Explore and uncover the flavour and allure of the city’s streetscapes and waterfronts - each with its own individual character.
Honeysuckle and the Harbour - For a meal with a view
Newcastle harbour is home to Honeysuckle, a major waterfront rejuvenation project transforming the previously industrial landscape. Working wharves are becoming places of play with the creation of foreshore promenades and open squares offering waterfront cafes and restaurants – all with glorious views. Some refer to it as Newcastle’s equivalent of Sydney’s Darling Harbour.
Newcastle East - Where the city meets the ocean and harbour
This is Newcastle’s oldest precinct and was the original town site. The area affords delightful contrasts, with the city centre surrounded by beach on one side and harbour on the other. As Australia’s second oldest city, the streetscapes abound with gracious heritage buildings and this precinct showcases some of the nation’s most significant sites.
Stockton - For maritime history and a spectacular coastal landscape
A short ferry ride away from Newcastle (Honeysuckle) is Stockton. Stockton has a rich maritime history and has seen over 100 ships wrecked on its shores, one of which has been incorporated into the 'Shipwreck Walk' along Stockton Breakwall. Stockton is also famous for its massive sand dunes, the largest moving coastal sand mass in the southern hemisphere. The sand dunes have formed the background of many films, including the popular Australian 'Mad Max' films.
Whilst our short stay may focus on the above precinct’s, others include:
Civic Cultural Precinct - Where Newcastle's cultural scene comes alive
City Centre - A place of revitalisation and transition, a mixture of the raw and refined
The Junction - Newcastle's boutique shopping village
Hamilton - For a multicultural mix and old-world treasures, and
Cooks Hill - For the young and hip (I’m sure we qualify).
In summary, all the ingredients for another fantastic Probus trip.

Garden Group – September 2024
A group of 20 members from the Garden Group had an enjoyable day, visiting Wisteria Gardens in the north end of Parramatta Park. The timing of our visit was impeccable as we saw the wisteria flowering plus cherry, apple and plum trees in blossom. The trees were surrounded by a range of flowering bulbs. There were even bulb flowers which none of us had seen before. Afterwards, we finished our gardening day by having lunch at Club Parramatta.
For our next activity, the Gardening Group will be visiting:
Boongala Native Gardens & Rainforest, Kenthurst
Boongala Native Gardens and Rainforest is an 11 acre property that has been developed over a number of years by Mal and Jenny Johnston. They previously operated a native plant nursery called Annangrove Grevilleas.
Boongala, is an Aboriginal word which means shaded place. When you visit Boongala you will discover the existence of a wide range of Australian plants, wildflowers and the birdlife that are attracted by these plants. The property also has a lush rainforest, which has been maturing for the last 25 years. Various fern, vines and native orchids can be found growing here.
Date : Thursday 10 October 2024
Where : 76 Pitt Town Road, Kenthurst.
Cost : $10 per person is required to be paid on the day for entry to the gardens and for the guided rainforest and bush tucker tour.
We need a minimum of 12 people to attend as the owners are only opening up their property on 10 October just for our Probus Garden Group.
Meet : We will meet outside the Boongala gate entrance at about 10.15am. Please let me know if you require transport or are able to car pool.
Lunch : The Centre Café, 1 Pellitt Lane, Dural. (The café is located on the corner of Pellitt Lane and Kenthurst Road.)

Probus Photography September Report
As always the first few minutes of the meeting are social with some nibbles and wine.
We viewed a video on still photography and then adjourned to have a go up setting up a scene with the use of lights. There were some very interesting compositions as we rotated through members having time to set up and take images.

We reviewed the monochrome portrait images following our posing of subjects at the August meeting and then the open images. If someone does not have an image in the set subject they can place it in the open section.

Congratulations Max on achieving the open image of the month as voted by the members. The image has an interesting story as these two are just waiting to laugh at the golfers who are going to hit off on the third tee!! Because of its dimensions it also becomes our banner image for the month.

Also of interest was a 3 way tie for second ( David, Max & Ken) in game 1 whilst Hilda, Toni & Sue were very close to each other over both games.

Tennis Group Report- September 2024
Tennis has been a bit intermittent since the last report. Bev and I have been away for a month and we have one incapacitated player, so that reduces the numbers significantly.
Fortunately, a couple of members stepped in on occasion to make up the numbers so a couple of games were played.
Michael mentioned at the last meeting that we are happy to arrange an introduction session for members who may be interested in joining us. We play socially, not at competition level game. Maybe you played years ago and would like to take it back up. Maybe you have never played but would like to learn. If you think this my apply to you, please have a chat with me and we can work something out. Also I will put a sign-up sheet at the meeting for you to register your interest.
We play on Monday & Wednesday, 8.30am at Hasting Park Tennis Complex, 44 Belltree Crescent, Castle Hill.

Thanks to Julie and Bain for hosting the “Black Friday” themed Wine & Cheese, on a cool September evening. We had 21 attendees and everyone wore their best “Black Friday” outfits. Special mention must go to Bain for his excellent Black Friday decorations both outside and inside their home.
Hopefully, no one has had any bad luck befall them, after walking under the ladder when entering via the front door.
The October Wine & Cheese will held at the home of Carmen and John Sanders on Friday 11th October. Hope to see you all there.
