President's Report
President’s Report - Oct 2025
Can you believe we are into October? 2 months to Christmas !! Eeeek!!
The club has been very busy as usual with the Spring weather bringing everyone out.
Gardens are blooming and require our attention but there is always time for Probus. How lucky are we!?!
We are all starting to get our calendars filled with activities leading up to Christmas but please keep Wednesday 17th free for our Christmas lunch. Stuart will be updating us when prices are available. Thanks Stuart.
There will be an update re the Constitution and Standing Resolutions at our next general meeting on Wednesday. It’s easier to mention at the meeting but watch out for an email early in November. Please read it.
David Antonjuk will be taking the November meeting as Rob and I will be in India. Thank you, David.
Whilst I am thanking people, a big thank you to Eric for assembling this Newsletter giving Andrew a break and with Enio in Japan.
Enjoy all the activities coming up. Thank you so much to all the activity leaders for always organising such interesting and fun events.

October Guest Speaker - Alex Marino-Hume
Origins of Tennis - Real Tennis
Alex Marino-Hume is currently the Head Professional at Sydney Real Tennis Club. He and his wife, Charlotte, moved here 7 months ago to coincide with the building of the 50th, and newest, real tennis court in the world, here in Sydney.
Prior to his real tennis career, Alex was a professional choral singer in London. Highlights included singing for world-renowned groups such as The Sixteen and Tenebrae, appearing on movie soundtracks such as Barbie and The Hunger Games, and singing at the Coronation of King Charles II and Queen Camilla.
Alex and Charlotte are enjoying their time in Sydney and hoping to encourage many more people to take up the intriguing, challenging, and rewarding game that is real tennis.
Club Covid 19 Policy
We have set down a Covid 19 policy for the club. Essentially we will abide by the NSW health guidelines. We ask all members to respect the health and wellbeing of their fellow members, and therefore not attend activities unless they are fully vaccinated. We have no desire to get into a situation where we need to physically check every attendee to determine their vaccination status. We are relying on the integrity of our members and the fact that they are endangering their friends if they do not abide by this policy.

Mid September-mid October reads: 17; total: 92 – me thinks we need to increase the target!!
Sister Viv by Grantlee Kieza: Vivian Bullwinkel - what an amazing life! Country girl Viv signs up for the war effort as a nurse. She is just 26 when occupying Japanese soldiers in Bangka Island march her and her fellow nurses to the beach and into the waters of a remote beach to be executed. Somehow she becomes the lone survivor and commits the rest of her life to a career of caring for others. She eventually became one of the highest ranking women in the Australian Army. A truly inspirational story of a woman who put the care of others before all else.
One of the Good Guys by Araminta Hall: Reviewed month. About Col who thinks he is one of the good guys, his ex-wife Mel who sees things differently from Col, and then Lenny, a famous artist. There are many weird and confronting moments where you think its just another rant against men, but when revenge enters the story it really does your head in. Listening to the 3 versions of events makes you question the truth. One of those hate/love types of books where you keep changing your perspective but become very judgemental.
The Tea Ladies by Amanda Hampson: Reviewed previously. A group of tea ladies working in the 60s, find themselves embroiled in solving a series of strange events involving ruthless crooks, racketeers and a missing woman believed to be in danger.
The Cryptic Clue by da Hampson: Second book from the Tea Ladies Mystery and also reviewed previously. Shock! Horror! The dreaded Café Bar machine is on its way in, looking like the Tea Ladies are out. This is also the time of the building of the Sydney Opera House, and the introduction of decimal currency. In true Tea Lady style, all the bits and pieces somehow come together to help them solve the mystery.
Mr Einstein’s Secretary by Matthew Reilly: Reviewed a few times now – this is such a good book mixing history with fiction. Hanna Fischer, of German and American genetics grows up at the time of the rise of Hitler, and her neighbour in Germany was Alber Einstein. Lots of spying, and a bit of a love story on the side. This book is one of Reilly’s really good ones. Well worth the read.
The Man Behind the Prize – a Life of J.F. Archibald by Paul J Greguric: The book deals more with Archibald’s life as a journalist and later, as editor of the Bulletin. A very interesting read.
Love Overdue by Ali Berg & Michelle Kalus: The story moves between two timelines of Lauren and Jamie, childhood sweethearts who suddenly were not anymore. Lauren moves on to become Vice Principal at a Melbourne school. Through a troubled student she is reunited with Jamie, now a lawyer, and the child’s dad.
The Pursuits of Lord Kit Cavanaugh by Stephanie Laurens: An easy period read based on an orphaned woman who set up a school for the local miners’ children. Then there is Lord Kit, determined to make his own way through life rather than relying on his family background.
Precious Things by Kelly Doust: The story of a collar – an alluring, glittering piece – and its journey through the decades. Paris, Shanghai, Rome, Istanbul all play a part in its story. Maggie is an auctioneer in modern-day London, who finds the collar neglected and crumpled in a discarded box. She sets out to discover more about its past.
Fallen Woman by Fiona McIntosh: an interesting story about two sisters, one pregnant and engaged to be married into a well off family, the younger sister forced to take on the care of the baby so the older sister could marry. Set in the 18th century where pregnancy outside marriage was considered shameful.
Real Americans by Rachel Khong: Two Chinese Scientists work in genetics. They immigrate from China to America where they continue their scientific work. When they genetically modify their daughter through IVF, the repercussions make a good read.
Surrogate Mother by Freida McFadden: Abby wants a baby and has decided to use a surrogate. However, the woman she has chosen is after Abby’s money and husband. She tries to frame Abby for murder.
We are All Guilty Here by Karin Slaughter: Two girls disappear in a small town. Police Officer Emmy Clifford must uncover the secrets of her small town to find the answers. A great read.
Oscar Piastri, the Rookie by Andrew van Leeuwen: a great read for lovers of F1 racing and the meteoric rise of Australian driver Oscar Piastri. It follows his life from a little boy who loved his remote control cars, to go-carting, then F4 – 3 – 2 and finally F1 racing. An extraordinary craftsman.
The Creeper by Margaret Hickey: When the new policewoman in the one-person station decides to delve into a 10 year old murder of 5 around the events anniversary – what could possibly go wrong? Not all the facts that convicted the murderer add up. The truth finally comes out after many twists and turns, with an unexpected and surprising outcome.
Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty: Liane Moriarty manages to capture all the subtleties of the characters and keeps you guessing right as to who dies. The setting is in a little school, the parents and their lies, assumptions and truth stretching, cattiness all interact in such a fascinating way.
Hope to see more of you join.

A woman washes ashore in Sicily. She has come from North Africa to find her son, taken from her when he was just days old by his father and stolen away to Berlin. With nothing but her maid's uniform and a knife stashed in a plastic bag, she relies on strangers— some generous, some exploiting—to guide her passage north. |

Cycling Report for Oct 2025
The October cycling tour started off from Silverwater Boat Ramp Carpark (Silverwater Park). The ride headed down the Parramatta River to the Armoury Reserve, then rode through the Newington parklands up to Olympic Park. From here the group rode through Wentworth Common before entering Badu Mangroves near Haslams Creek and heading to the Waterview Cafe in Bicentennial Park. (Approximate distance – 18kms).
Following the enjoyable coffee break the riders headed back through Bicentennial Park to the Rhodes busway bridge, crossing over to Wentworth Point and then along the Parramatta River to Silverwater Park. It should be noted that, one of the eagle eyed riders spotted a red belly back snake adjacent to the cycle path on the way back!
The ride length was 18.0km with an elevation gain of 57.0m.
NOTE: Next month’s ride will start off from the Rydalmere Ferry Terminal Carpark (located off John Street Rydalmere) and head off to Meadowbank via the Carlingford light rail line! The ride will be relatively flat and will follow the bike paths in and around the parklands. (Approx. distance – 15kms).
Date: Monday 10th November 2025 (To be confirmed pending numbers).
NOTE: An earlier date, as the Group Leader will be away for the following 2 Wednesdays)
Start time: 9.30am
We will stop for a coffee along the way.
Please bring your helmet, water and sunscreen.
Please let me know, if you are interested in joining the ride.

This is a good number as it provides us a bit more flexibility (than a larger group ) in regards to our dining and activity options.
So based on say twenty-four we can start fine tuning our options and start making some reservations. My priority is to lock in the whale watching.

Activities (Draft)
Tuesday, we chose August to coincide with whale watching, our potential key activity with an indicative price of $80pp for a 2.5-hour cruise, departing Nelson Bay Marina 9.45am.
Wednesday, our best group option appears to be the ferry to Tea Gardens with lunch at the pub (opposite the wharf) or alternatively the Fish Co-Op (5-minute walk). Group rate for the ferry is $32.00pp return. Departs 11.30am (60min trip) and return trip departs 2.30pm (Nelson Bay 3.30pm).
As with previous trips, we will suggest group activities and venues for evening meals (WIP). We will also provide some options you can do at your leisure. For example:
Monday on the way there:
· Fighter World for fighter aircraft aviation heritage, 10.00am to 4.00pm, adjacent the RAAF base at Williamtown.
· Hunter Region Botanic Gardens, Heatherbrae
Tuesday afternoon:
· Nelson Head Heritage Lighthouse & Reserve, offers panoramic views, gift shop and a museum
· Gan Gan Lookout for 360-degree views, Nelson Bay

Wednesday before or after the Tea Gardens trip:
· Port Stephens Community Arts Centre, Nelson Bay
· Art Walk, Nelson Bay, twelve galleries within the CBD, not to mention some retail theory
Thursday on the way home:
· For those who enjoy Barramundi, how about The Cookabarra Barramundi Farm, Restaurant & Function centre. Includes a daily tour 11.00am $12pp (need to book) and lunch from 12.00pm

Queensland Great Central Outback Trail
Sun 1st to Wed 11th Aug 2027
Given we are seeking expressions of interest two years in advance, we had a pretty good initial response for this trip which has now increased to forty members after two meetings.
This is a fantastic opportunity to experience the central Queensland outback. Please refer to the itinerary below.
We were hoping to undertake this trip with Trade Travel next year; however, the major tour operators have taken block bookings for some of our key accommodation. Subsequently we elected for 2027.
Whilst Trade Travel has secured our trip as per their itinerary, some of their suppliers are still to determine their rates for 2027. Therefore, until they can provide a ‘Tour Cost’ they are not seeking a deposit and we suggest their Itinerary is viewed as a DRAFT.
Whilst their minimum number is twenty, our accommodation at Longreach (three nights in sixteen luxury glamping tents), will restrict us to thirty-two, less potential single supplements. I’m confident, once we have a ‘Tour Cost’ it will sell out quite quickly.
Whilst we don’t have a costing, a 2025 similar Trade Travel trip (whilst the same number of days it excluded Longreach and a flight back to Brisbane) to Southwest Queensland is $5,000. Therefore, expect to pay more.
If interested:
Any questions, please give me a call after 8th November.

Movie Group - Oct 2025
We meet on the first Tuesday of the month in the foyer area of Event Cinemas on the Piazza side of Castle Towers usually around 9.30am, depending on session times.
As the newsletter comes out earlier than the session times are advertised, we email members who have advised their interest in being on our Movie Emailing List with the relevant movies for the following first Tuesday of the month Movie Day. Also, we usually meet at Cosmo Café after the movie for lunch. When you receive the Movie Email, could you please advise by return email whether or not you will be joining us for lunch after your movie.
Please note that there will now be a Movie Sign-In Sheet placed on the table at the back of the hall at our monthly Probus meetings for members to sign their Intention to Participate at the next movie day. If you would like to be added to the Movie Contact List please add your name and contact details at the bottom of this Intention to Participate sheet and we will arrange to have our Movie Emailing List updated accordingly.
Similarly, if your name is on our list and you would like it removed, could you please draw a line through your name and it will be removed accordingly.

Probus Photography Oct 2025 Report
October Photography Meeting
As usual we started our meeting with a short music video music video. This is not photography but adds some fun to the night.
Besides the opening and closing music videos we looked at the open and set subject images
and had a discussion on a particular aspect of photography.
The discussion this month was on how images can be edited with the tools within a smartphone. We ran through all the editing options that are available that improves the quality of the images.
Images of the Month and Facebook Site Banner Image.
An image of the month is awarded for both the set and open categories. The set subject for the month were images that were created using Artificial Intelligence software. This was a wow factor in the images that were created. Our members had a lot of fun with the exercise explaining what they asked the AI software to generate. The open category is any image taken over the past that does not meet the set subject criteria. Each month is getting harder to select the image of the month as outstanding images are submitted.
Each of our winning images are voted on by the those attending the meeting.
Open Subject Image of the Month
Congratulations to Rob having the highest votes for the following image of a splendid blue wren taken in Western Australia. The colours and uncluttered background make the bird stand out drawing our eye all over the bird.

Oct Report 2025
Ten Pin Bowling took place last Friday.
For the very first time the girls participating outnumbered the boys. We also saw two of the girls beat their partners in one of the games played. To avoid embarrassment I will not disclose names.
Game 1 saw David triumph ahead of Barry on the boys side with Bev edging Deirdre & Toni on the girls side.
Game 2 saw both David & Bev win again from Barry & John & Toni & Sue respectively.
Bev, however, had the bragging rights in game 2 as she had the highest score making it a very good day out for the girls.
Our final game for the year will take place on Friday, 21 November.

Walking Oct 2025
Thank you to all the members that joined the walk in Oct around the Knightsbridge Circuit. It was such a great day that I did not take a photo of the group. 15 members attended the walk; most stayed for the coffee & cake afterwards.
The next walk will be on Nov 18th (NOTE the change of date) and it is an easy walk on flat ground for approx. 3.5km. There are few steps, flat paved paths, foreshore, harbour views, mostly shaded and a great lunch.
We will catch the metro from Castle Hill, getting off at Barangaroo Metro station, walk past the Crown Tower, Darling Harbour. pass the new IMAX, Tumbalong Park, south on the ‘Goods Line’, pass the UTS to Central station, and then down Broadway to Spice Alley for lunch. There is a choice of spicey food and drink. After lunch we will have a short walk back to Central to catch the metro home. There are plenty of cafes to stop for coffee on route if desired.
